Jacobs doing the emoji pop
In the Logic Session Breakdown of this song, Jacob mentioned that he hadn't slept for 2 nights and Daniel was on tour, so also tired, when shooting this in Montreal. They're just different types of tired.
Maybe just different stages. Daniel’s just exhausted. Jacob left exhausted behind twelve hours ago and has transcended into insanity.
Do you mean in the video or during the recording?
@@strikeachord7228 The video
jacob's parts kept reminding me of those "history of the world" and "history of japan" bill wurtz videos omg
Yup
That’s ‘cause Bill Wurtz and Jacob Collier are literally the two best musicians in the entire world right now ngl

Lmao
I knew I wasn't the only one!!
"What genre of music do you listen to?"
"I... I'm not sure?"
Alternate answer "yes"
It's actually so hard to describe this genre to anyone.
Neo-soul
Nu-Jazz, kiddo. Real music.
Please. This is now-soul. This is 100% D’Angelo. That man is is prototype for this whole. Like note for note, arrangement, style...everything ripped right from any D’Angelo album. It’s already been done. They should pay homage.

In a livestream Jacob mentioned that this was shot when they were both extremely sleep deprived from constant work, and that their reactions to being tired are opposite.
So Jacob becomes a lunatic and Daniel chills out lol
Jacob was tweaking outt
Only just started getting into Jacob but man, I feel like his potential is limitless.
I discovered JC in back in September 2020 and now he's all I listen to.
I pretty much listen to all of Djesse Vols 1, 2, and 3 every day
Hi brings back the '80s, when pop music was about talented persons and groups expressing something through music, coming up with ideas, trying new things - not what is going today: A/B testing every note, in order to produce the most perfect optimal crap everyone like between 19-48 yo., and produce profit.
Tanks, Jacob!
I also just started listening to his music today, I found him from my recommendation about him making his audience sing in harmony. Damn it's a bop to me😌
If you ask me, Jacob Collier is the next big voice of modern-day jazz, this song is a prime example of that. It don’t get more jazzy than this!!!
daniel all chill and jacob having fun is a perfect display of their music

Aww Jesus. Jacob is doing EXACTLY what you are supposed to do with music. 1. Transfer massive energy to the listener 2. Break the rules when doing it. The bar has been raised two orders of magnitude. Thank you.
0. Have fun
He is very inspiring to say the least, makes me want to just jam more and follow more crazy ideas because why the hell not.
Wait what?! You're the hater of jacob on one of his video ive red your comment bob and then now you praise him? Like wtf dude fr?! 😂

Yes sir
I still find it hilarious that they both filmed this when they were really tired and you can see the difference of that effect on them both ahahaha
Its like funk, gospel, pop and jazz got gift wrapped in a burrito of tonal fusion

Seems like Jacob is Daniels inner feelings when he's with that girl and on the outside he's all chill.
Oooo, love that interpretation
Alica That’s exactly how I saw it as well. You took the words right out of my keyboard. 😅
I do too! Didn't think of it that way but it makes total sense.
yeah the music video made me realize that's exactly what's going on -- it's the calm facade of smooth talk and the absolute hype you're trying to basically hide. I thought the pitch shifted lines were a bit wonky in the song, but it's literally the tiny voice in your head loosing it's absolute shit around someone you like!
nice
D'Angelo vibes, and I'm absolutely here for it
Sometimes I'll go a couple of months without listening to Jacob. And then when I listen to him again it's a massive shock , just how unbelievably brilliant he is.

copying and pasting the top comment is crazy
I tried to do the whole vocal layer thing he does. He lines it up so simply. Meanwhile, I started off optimistic. Ended up with 100 different mixer channels, one bus with a peak controller set to a midi map I made of a flat speaking voice in order to filter out everything so it sounded uniform....I got good pitch so nothing was harmonically wrong. But it still didn’t sound as uniform rhythmically as this...like at all. How in the hell do you just do this all casually.
Like I have formed a conspiracy that my computers refresh rate is a ballpark. Lol.

Jacob really likes to have creative control over everything, and I don't blame him.
he really needs to let someone else mix his songs, it's getting a little tiring as of late because he seems very unable to restrain himself
@@ianremsen what's getting a little tiring?
@@ianremsen he said once in one of his many videos that he thinks mixing plays a huge part in his compositional process. something about designing the soundspace in the way he envisioned it specifically. and honestly if the end result is this good, i have no problem with it at all!
@@ianremsen dude you need to explain futher
@@ianremsen I quite agree. at first I was excited to see that there is finally someone else to accompany Jacob than just Jacob himself in the video. however while Daniel is a great counterpoint to him, JC still dominates the whole show, both visually and acoustically, running around, trumpetating and making funny faces.
don't get me wrong, I still love this piece as I love most of his creations and crazy music theories. he just often gives the impression of being a bit too high on his own genius.
Me: "Aight, gon play this on piano"
*first part is in e half flat minor*
Me: "Aight, I'm not gon play this ever"
I love that Jacob is this giga amazing music genius and he doesn't take himself too serious
I think the majority of truly brilliant ppl in this world are un-pretentious. It's usually the folks that feel lacking that end up acting sanctimonious ime
I like to think that Jacob isn't actually layering vocal tracks and he just found a way to sing using multiple voices at a time.
One of those voices is Jojo’s

0:04 - 0:07 that note feels like the start of D’Agelo’s How does it feel. 0:10-0:20 feels like D’Angelo’s Feel like making love, the male harmonies sound like Take Six songs from the So Much to Say album. The rest is all influences from D’s songs. Nicely done👌🏾
yeah yeah i hear a lot of d’angelo influences in Jacob’s music!
These two actually have the best dynamic. Their collaborations and friendship are amazing.
Daniel: How I be before you get to know me
Jacob: How I be after you get to know me
Kelemen Szabó accurate
jacob is like daniels highly distracted sibling who just sees an instrument and disappears and then blasts the trumpet
He didn't play trumpet for this song. He says in in Instagram live video about this song that he's not good at the instrument
Jasmine Dakota aww.. well he’s still a genius
I mean he is amazing at so many things and Trumpet takes quite a lot of time because your lips and stuff needs to be built up first.
I mean other instruments probably arent easier but brass playing needs a lot of time to get good sound
@@ryanaiden I still love your analogy. That's totally the dynamic they have going on. Daniel's just chilling and Jacob's... being Jacob. I love it!
What if - wait for it - the song is about trying to practice the trumpet?? Maybe it's just because I found this comment as the trumpet part came up, but this reminded me of how I feel trying to find the time to practice my trombone in amongst all the craziness of life and trying to get "time alone [with my trombone]."
The director went in and said "just be yourselves". And thats exactly wht they did .insane artistry occuring before our eyes

You may not like the complexity of Mr Collier's arrangements, but anyone with ears can hear the talent on display. This tune is as complex as it should be. I'm not sure there is anything I could bring to his table. And Caesar's work is teaching me lots of stuff too. Listening to music like this is humbling, as it reminds me how much there always is to learn and explore. Creativity, musical theory and technology all fuelling each other. Just brilliant. Yes. @@natemickens88 Nah man, it's basically neo-soul. D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, and others have done some similar stuff. Frank Ocean has as well, but Jacob also uses synth funk and jazz aspects heavily.
(Please don't read this as me fanboying over Jacob. His musicianship is insane but I don't love his composition. I'd much rather have any of the artists I named before.)
Hawthorne Passage Jacob clearly is a musicologist more like Prince. His music is more experimental and catchy. Eclecticism at best and in this case, very Philly influenced piece of funk jazz that deserves radio play but will not happen.
