Great video! I leave the radio on during the day so that they are hearing voices as well as the music. I also sprinkle a tiny bit of seed on alternate days on the cage floor. I'd done this I initially to encourage them to forage on the base, now it's become part of our routine. Yes, they remind me if I forget! lol
My conure loves to hear voices/talking as well as music but just discovered she really chills out to relaxing piano music (we put it on TH-cam) - she’ll start nodding off and can stay in the zone ages! x
My birds LOVE baroque harpsichord music. So when I have to walk to the grocery store up the hill from me, I’ll hide little bits of millet and some bits of almond and safflower in the pineapple toy, those little corn toys, the wooden balls that I have hanging in their cages via rope, etc., and then put a baroque harpsichord playlist that I downloaded from iTunes on and they all really seem to enjoy hanging out in their cages, making their ways around finding the treats, and peeping along to baroque harpsichord. My young male budgie REALLY gets very melodically going along with the music, and the other two birds really seem to enjoy his performances and try to keep up. They form a little chorus. Sometimes when I get back from the grocery store and go to let them out of their cage it’s like they really don’t want to come out of their cages at that point, they’ve been having a little party. It’s fun for them!
Aww I'm excited for this video! I'm so sorry I haven't been commenting much, I've just not had the time for watching videos from people because of high school! Haha!
I don't mind having the radio/music on for a while, but it's generally a relief when I turn it off. I imagine birds would enjoy silence sometimes too. Prehaps music on a timer is a good idea.
ooof, so much information and "how to..." on this channel, cant believe theres so few views. you also seem nice and have a tight bond with your birbs. almost makes me feel sad, hope the youtube algorithm is picking you up soon, you really deserve it. thanks for sharing your experience and helping people, wish you lots of luck & all the best.
Hey Sophie, as always a very informative video again. You must have a lot of love for all your birds. Keep up the good work, it's fantastic. Grtngs from Belgium ;-)
I leave my birds out. Have for years now. No issue. Did turn my bedroom into a bird room mind you lol. I've played bird noises before, but only for a few seconds. 9/10 times you just get their flock call response. I get that when I go into the kitchen enough as it is thanks lol. I'd leave music on before I leave TV on to be honest. That block foraging toy on the left looks really cool. I take a scoop of healthy seed mix and toss it around on the 4 foraging areas if I do need to leave. Keeps them busy for a little bit at least. They tend to forage as much as they can, then nap after.
Everyone’s set up is different but as a rule I don’t blanket recommend leaving birds out unsupervised - I know mine would be straight to the wires and chewing the walls! I’ve seen some birds freak out at bird noises, so something with a bit of rhythm instead goes down better 😂 And yes, foraging all the way!
Bird tv! Birdtricks has wonderful bird tv, I always mute it and open another window on my computer with calming classical music (Debussy is the best) preferably something piano, guitar or harp, no flutes. I tend to shy away from loud music or over emotional rock or pop, my bird gets kinda over heightened - though the music is familiar and probably associated with loved ones because we really love rock music in our family. When I live music for him volume is always about volume 14 to 25 volume- no more. You can also put a screen saver of that one abstract picture you like, maybe a colorful watercolor or pencil painting perhaps or may something you made yourself? It is just to block the screen so it is not too busy. If you wanna learn more about classical music benefits for in neuroscience search it up it is so interesting I was so pleased when I discovered that it actually calms my bird’s body beautifully , and I calm myself just as much!
Hey sophie! I am very young with school, but i dont really have a pet sitter bc the only ppl who stay ho. E while i go to school is my aunt and nanny, my nanny doesnt have time bc she needs to clean the house and my aunt is scared, i might teach her to get comfortable with the birds tho!
❤❤❤❤❤ Sophie can you advise me my budgie stuffs food in his bell is this hormonal behaviour? HES been doing it for a while I e learnt a lot from your channel ❤
Loads of great ideas, thank you. My Conure has lots of foraging toys that she uses but she doesn’t often just shred toys, even though I’ve made sure (after a lot of trial and error, and help from your channel) that all her toys are easily shreddable for small beaks and beginners. Any suggestions or videos for me to watch that you’ve done on this? All the best 😊👍🏽
Have you seen this video of mine? th-cam.com/video/LrradvPH5qA/w-d-xo.html Essentially you want to do a training session with a toy and reinforce for any interest in the toy or looking at it, then a beak touch, then a bite and go from there!
I have a question about toys is it possible to have a rotation like one week the wheel and ext and like every couple of week the toys rotate will that still work
Hi Sophie this video is very helpful thank you firstly. I wanted to ask two points. I have the state of the art 58' telly on the wall so I assume this would fit within the telly requirements. I am not to sure how to check this? secondly how would/do manage the food in those instances? do you still stick to your routine or have food so that the birds have this in their cage when your out for the day for example or evening etc?
Hi Raj, you can use the slow mo video option on your phone camera to record your tv, watch it back and see if it flashes! For their food, if I know I'll be out until after their dinner time, I'll usually give it to them early!
I have a video on teaching your bird to play with toys but essentially make it easy for them to see the treats at first with big pieces, then smaller, you can also click and reinforce for interaction with the toy etc :)
I was wondering if there were any forums or sites that you knew to find people that owned birds near you so you could set up kind of play dates between your birds as I’m new to keeping birds I thought it would be nice to get advice etc
Hey! There are sometimes local area parrot Facebook groups where you can meet people, but be aware that mixing your bird with others can expose them to possible illnesses unless all the birds are disease tested!
That's great that you can take your birds! Some will get car sick, yes, but you can offer them fresh ginger 30 minutes before travel to try and help this!
So, what you said about TVs, would the same be true for lighting? I have noticed that if I take a slo mo video of a lamp, I can see that strobing light effect. If they could see that, it’s probably really annoying. What type of lighting would you recommend?
Yes it's entirely possible that birds can see it too - I found a very interesting article on the subject: freerangeparrots.com/2020/04/07/birds-and-flickering-lights/
Hi again, so may questions. Thank you for answering. I have 2 female tiels, ones is almost a year and the the other about 9mnths. They get on really well, eat in the same cage, play in the same cage ect. I'd love to pair them in the same cage but I'm concerned they might fight when not supervised. Do you think, i could leave them over night together? Really not sure, don't want either to start plucking ect. Both are very tame. Thank you for all your help and advice. Vanessa x
Hi Vanessa, have you tried supervised in cage time during the day, say for an hour at a time together, then increase the duration? If that has all gone well and there is enough food and water bowls and perches for each, try a whole day together. If that goes well then I'd say give overnight a go!
@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you. Yes they've been in the same cage for a couple of hours, i feed them in the same cage, 3 feeding dishes, 2 water so they can both choose what dish to eat from. They are mostly out during the day, they have cage time together after lunch. I'll try a afternoon, then night. Thank you xxxx
I know I’m a bit late but I have a few questions is there any way to train my bird to not be afraid of objects such as toys and a dish for bathing etc because by bird hasn’t had a proper bath and anytime he wants to he kind of just splashed water from his drinking water. My second question is if having a big bird cage is required because my cage is significantly small with one perch and no toys(he’s very afraid of them)another problem with this is that I left for a two week trip and having someone checking up, changing water and food everyday but isn’t let out of his cage and I’m very worried that he will become depressed and and I’m also worried for his physical health as he isn’t flying 😢. If anyone knows anything I can do please reply I really need some help thanks 🙏.
Hey! I’d recommend watching my video on how to bathe your bird as there is training in there! Yes they do need a big cage with lots of perches and toys - cage set up videos on here! And it’s hard to say, birds are flock animals so if they will be alone for the majority of the time for a couple of weeks they might get stressed - you could consider a boarding facility instead or a live in pet sitter!

hello, ive had my conure for about 3 weeks, i recently kept him in the cage sonce saturday. Should i leave him in there a full week or let him out within the next day or two?
It's gonna be impossible to train him because I have 2 parakeets and he likes to hang out with them when I've tried bonding with him 1 on 1 he doesnt seem interested and he bitea my fingers. i guess I'll figure something out
@@BirdNerdSophie I usually try luring them out with some millet. They've started to not be so scared being outside. But they are not like the budgies in the videos you see who love being outside and flying. I guess my ones are just less trusting of the environment.
