Having 19 birds (three different species) cleaning their bowls is basic and essential care. Having so many birds, I do put out fresh food and different seed mixes everyday. The budgies and Barred parakeets make a fun for the veggies; the cockatiels are getting there.
The training "stations" you have set up look like lovely fun! And it looks like things you put together yourself..?
It's brilliant! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for watching 🤗
110% with everything❤!
(my birds and I send a "happy hello!" from Canada)
Happy hello back! 😊
Having just got a conure, I have followed your advice for his or her food . Also I am constantly cleaning his cage and bowls. The only problem I'm having at the moment is him biting me,even if I hide my hands,he comes down my sleeve and tries hard to find and bite them. I'm hoping he will eventually stop. When i got him a couple of weeks ago now he was on an all seed diet. Also he's about 2 years old. First thing i did was buy him a larger cage, which he went into straight away. Love your videos, and I'm going through them for as much advice as I can get.
Thanks for watching 😊 there’s always a reason for biting so it’s worth exploring that! And watching my video on trust too 😊
I am new to this so any suggestions would be helpful
I agree 100% 😊
Hi Sophie, thanks for the great info as usual! I agree with all the points :) When you said the last one was something not all bird owners do everyday I thought you were going to say weigh your birds. It's so cray that some people don't wash their bowls every day!
If your bird will allow it, I think weighing them every day or atleast three times a week should be a common practice because weight loss is one of the only ways to tell if a bird is sick since they are so good at hiding illness. It will also help your avian vet gauge their health over time when you see them. There are lots of sources (find reputable ones) that give the average of what your bird should weigh depending on thier species, gender, and age, or you could also speak to your vet to see what a normal range is. There will be some exceptions because some birds wil be larger or smaller than others due to diet and early nutritional intake, but a weight chart is generally a good indicator of how healthy your bird is.
Regular weighing is indeed super important, I’ve got a whole video about it on here! I think ideal weighing is ideal, but 3 times a week also works too 😊
I'm so thankful you made this video. We had 2 of our 3 birds with a throat infection. Now I know why, we didn't wash the bowls often and thoroughly enough. Thank you so much!
You are most welcome 😊💙
My conure loves to sit on top of the shower screen and enjoy the steam from the shower. I’ve been doing that daily since his pin feathers are still coming out and I can see that it is itchy and uncomfortable for him. The steam really helps calm him down and provides some relief.
He sometimes bathes in his water bowl and when he does I take him out to a sunny spot on the balcony to dry off his feathers. It also allows me to help him with the feathers that are ready for preening. He’s such a floof that they’re easy to miss. Another reason to keep the water bowl clean!
That’s adorable! Some conures can be such water babies 🥰
Oh! and another thing I do is check his morning poop every day and clean it up LOL 😂
I feel relieved when it looks normal and knowing that he doesn’t have a blockage or some kind of infection.
I watched your ACV video and use that protocol in his water a few days a month. So far so good ❤️
Great video Soph!❤🤗🌸
Thank you! 🤗
This was a great list. 💚 In addition to these I personally try to do a quick health check on my birds every day via a mindful observation during which I pay careful attention to their eyes, nostrils, feet and butt area. Just to make sure everything looks clean and healthy. This was I also learn what each individual really looks like and can notice changes more easily. 😊 I’m hoping to teach them to open their wings by request in the future to be able to see how their under the wing area looks like more easily too. Hope we’ll get there one day with my tiels!
Btw! What is the wonderful toy around 4:55 that your cockatiel is playing with! Looks like a great foraging toy!
A daily health check is absolutely important! It helps us to notice the subtle differences of something isn’t right!
Thank you! They do love it 😍
@@BirdNerdSophie Would you happen to remember where you found the foraging toy? 🙂
Great advice - I am now a subscriber
Thanks for subscribing 🥰
Although at first entry into the shower (so she gets more water time) my 5 year old Quaker female, Ivy, does love how she feels after a daily bath or shower. I offer her a bathing bowl but also provide her shower time in my shower. She is a plucker, but seems the bathing calms her down.
Bathing definitely calms a lot of birds down! And it’s great to offer a bath daily and they can let us know if they want to participate or not! 😀
@@BirdNerdSophie I also don’t think my girl has any skin issues, according to g to her vet. I think she is bored, doesn’t like to not see me (I’m retired. So if I leave the room, she refuses to come find me by flying. Only flys if spooked. She is my only bird, so no avian interaction there. She didn’t start over grooming until she was over 2 years old. It gets too hot to have her outside past 90 degrees in our hot Texas summers, unless I put her in the shade in her outdoor cage. She does like the sunroom, and she has never laid an egg as I don’t allow her pro,ots to be nesty. I think she adores me too much.
Just found you !! What a great channel
I found injured cockatiel who only only eats seeds. Will not touch vegetables or fruit. Wish I could speak with you
Thank you!
We do offer consultations at Best Behaved Birds 😊
I enjoyed your video. I clean cages with a complete wipe down and new paper towels on bottom of cage daily. It is so much easier to do this then waiting and have poops every where. If I did not do this they eat their poop.
Absolutely’ keeping on top of the cleaning is so much easier!
Salutations a tous! Salut les oiseaux jolies et intelligentes!! Une bonne journee a tous! 😊👍👍👍🐦🦜😘😘🍀🌞☕
😊💙🦜
Thank you for the tips
You’re welcome!
Thank you, great videos
Glad you like them!
Our cockatiels absolutely loathe anything that's remotely wet or slightly squishy. We know even Harrisons Pellets aren't enough vitaminwise, so we're going to buy an extra bowl to just at least offer them the fresh fruit and veggies, but so far an entire year without luck and plenty on offer for them (coated in millet seeds even). Any tips? Besides not giving them pellets in the morning until noon?
Have you seen my video on 20 tips to get your bird to eat veggies? 😊
@@BirdNerdSophie I think I actually watched it twice haha, but I'll watch it again and write it all down (for the first time)!
The water/food bowl thing did surprise me! I get sick of hand washing them every morning before I start the day so I just got a few extras and then I can wash them with the human dishes at the same time. Also great if we go away for a weekend, anyone looking after them can make up their bowls and just swap them over and leave the dirty stuff for us to deal with when we get back.
Though I do have a question - would it be bird safe to have their bowls cleaned in the dishwasher? I'm aware there is some strong chemicals in dishwashing tablets etc so I wondered if that means it's unsafe for birds, or if they hot dry cycle at the end kinda cancels that out?
Having extra bowls on hand is great! I probably wouldn’t run things in the dishwasher just to be safe! It doesn’t take that long to do it by hand anyway 😊
❤
As far as training every day, I don’t train every day because my flock is special needs, and often not receptive to training. One of my birds has chronic avian gastric yeast, and while he has been treated for it, it’s chronic and hasn’t gone away. So, training him gets difficult because after every treat he eats, he has to regurgitate for like half an hour. He’s still eating his pellets and veggies fine and maintaining his weight, but he doesn’t like pellets or veggies as a treat and isn’t motivated to train for pellets and fresh vegetables. And my other bird is partially blind, and bites people a lot, so my parents are kinda scared of training her when I’m away at school. We tried to work on the biting, but because of her blindness, she gets scared of anything that comes near her and starts biting because of that fear. We did get her to bite a little more gently, so it doesn’t hurt anymore, but she does still like to bite people. We always do everything else on the list every day though, and I train both of them whenever I come home.
There will always be individual cases for sure! And for some animals, you don’t just have to train with treats! We’ve also had some fun consultations for blind birds and working through their challenges to become confident 😊

Is it safe to take leafs and branches and put it in his cage? Maybe he would play or build with it?
They would beed to be clean and you would need to check that they aren’t toxic!
***from outside like parks
Pickle snuggling 😍love the vlog. I know you don't breed birds Sophie but i'm wondering that my canaries have been smelling a lot and lots of Avians have been saying it's because of breeding would you recommend me taking out my nests the have in their aviary even though there trying to lay eggs but haven't? X
Glad you enjoyed!
Yes I would personally take the nests out and give the cage a deep clean and see how things are then! 😀
@@BirdNerdSophie Thank you! tomorrow I will be doing a really deep clean. Just wanna say also i'm so sorry if I were asking really random questions recently which you might have not known because i have been going through a lot of things with my birds. when they started to smell I tried everything but then i started getting busy at school e.c.t and just did not have any time too much for them. so something that came in my mind was giving them to a rehoming centre forever because I was keep on thinking to myself that i'm not a good enough owner and they deserve a better life but I really did deep down know that they're happy with me. but i really did not wanna give them to a rehoming centre. so so sorry for asking you one to many silly questions the pressure can really get to me when it comes to the birds! 😅
@@Anna-px9bd you are more than welcome to ask me any questions :)
@@BirdNerdSophie your so kind! 🥰
How can i get my bird off of the all seed diet, ive tried broccoli and carrots into his food but he’ll eat around them
I have a video on here on how to get your bird to eat vegetables 😊
How about exercise? Thank you love the videos
Definitely important! 😁🙌
Foraging and training could both be made a good source of exercise! I do flight training back and forth from the cage top as some of my bird’s exercise. Also, foraging that requires lots of motion such as foraging cups and trays are good for encouraging movement
Hi new cocktiel mom. My mom had an african grey so cockatiels use their feet to eat or no? I might need to chop my veggies smaller if not. They're young so i don't know if they're still learning.
Hey! Its uncommon for cockatiels to eat with their feet 😊
@BirdNerdSophie thank you so much for the reply, I love your content and you're fabulous 💖
I like to run my air purifier or try and open a window once a day for my cockatiels. Especially when I clean their cages.
Oh absolutely! It’s good for the humans and the birds 🙌😁
I understand the morning thing. I give my black capped conure one tablespooon of chop in the morning. But I’m supposed to give something in the evening? What do I give then what dry foods?
I have a video on what my conure eats in a day which will give you a good idea of what we offer 😊
@@BirdNerdSophie ok thanks will have a watch
Hi Sophie, I have quite a funny question for you! I drink summer fruits squash and one time my conure cheekily took a sip without me noticing and since then she has been obbsessed with trying to drink from my cups! Do you think it's ok for her to have a couple sips or should I avoid it all together? 🤔😂
lol summer fruits squash is what I drink all day long 😂 ours do sneak sips from my glass but it’s not that good for them so I try and discourage it and offer bird safe juice instead!
We'll keep it as a rare treat then! 🤪
You should have heard my sigh of relief when I found out I do that last one 🤣
😂😂😂
Could you please help with my bird it’s bit low lately
I’d recommend a check up with your avian vet!
It’s feeling better now
There is no like option!
