    Necessity is the mother of invention But looking for cracks in heads needs a bit more finesse than that. crawling around at floor level with no directional bright light would make finding small cracks or leaks very hard. They would be better served if they used a trace dye in the water that left a stain where a leak was. They are not expensive and some can even be made at home.

    Honestly never seen wood smashed into head like that. Also wood is pourous so air and liquid move through it

    I live in the First World, I don't need to whittle down blocks of wood next to open toe sandals to find out where my cylinder heads are leaking.
