Penetrant Testing Cylinder Head For Cracks

Great video!! Question, on the die showing around valve seat. Crack or normal mating service for seat?

Thank you for the comments. Since the seat is press fit, there is a "gap" at the joint. The die is drawn into the "gap" and then bleeds out. You really have to pay attention to make sure small cracks don't radiate from the seat and masked by the large bleed out.

Hi Mike can you get me the product part numbers of the different cans of the Zyglo so I can buy and try this on my aluminum cylinder head that may have a hair line crack.

Bob, absolutely NOT. Do not wire brush aluminum. What happened is it smears over the metal and covers and seals cracks. The only way would be to chemically clean it or hot tank it. Afterwards clean really good with cleaner prior to applying the penetrant.

What about the rest of that red? did you not clean it well enough?

Two reasons. The valve seat is pressed in, the penetrant is coming out of the joint. Its impossible to clean it all as it just keeps coming out. Second, for purpose of the video I knew where the crack was at so I concentrated on that area.

I have a black motorcycle frame. How do I perform this test on a black colored product that needs to be checked for cracks?

With this method all the plaint must be removed in the suspected area. Has to be bare metal. If not, the dye will absorb into the paint and be impossible to clean off. Also will promote corrosion. Do not sand it off, you need to use a chemical stripper then clean the area thoroughly before applying the dye.

If the frame is carbon steel and you can't or won't remove the paint, then a more applicable method would be Magnetic Particle (Magnaflux). It can find the cracks through paint. See my other video, " Magnetic Particle Cylinder Head for Cracks"
