Oh yes guys...I'm so happy you played Coil and Heir Apparent together...what a brilliant start to a brilliant album. One of my most favourite bands .... they are just superb....I actually love all their albums. Looking forward to more Opeth my friends 👍🤘
These two songs blew me away the first time I listened to this album.

Heir Apparent's intro always gets me, it so heavy and tasty.
These 2 songs are just ridiculous.

This album is incredible. By this time Åkerfeldt's songwriting is just so refined and on point. Watershed is Opeth at their best.
I always thought it was interesting how in Coil that right when they say "running through the fields of sorrow" the chord progression lands on a surprise major ("happy") chord (a picardy third for theory nerds). Does this imply the sorrow is good? 🤔 A simple explanation is that it's sort of a break-up song, just told from the future looking back, and remembering it in that fond-yet-melancholy way of a long relationship with good periods, that for whatever reason ultimately ended.
One of the more interesting interpretations I've heard about Heir Apparent is that it's about an abusive father. The lyrics are vague and leave a lot open to interpretation, but they seem to describe a tyrant who leaves ruin through his rule. You could just leave it at that: the song may just be about a despot. But the opening lines do seem to imply someone in prison (or purgatory) for doing some bad things, and does not an abuser deceive and leave ruin to the heirs apparent, his progeny?

Coil/Heir Apparent is just full on eargasm. Opeth is my all time favourite band and this is just a condensation of how awesome Opeth is. Their latest album In Cauda Venenum is just stunning. I know the growl purists don't listen beyond Watershed, but that's their loss.

My favorite opeth album.
The line : 'always waiting....for nothing' is so strong!It gets me every time.The album just started and they throw you this in the face...awesome!! If you like this kind of emotinal breakdowns , you should check out the album 'Dreaming Neon Black' by Nevermore!This album kills me every time I hear it!!! It's also progressive Metal, it has one of the best guitar players ever : J.Loomis and one of the best vocalists : W.Dane in it and it's based on a true story.
