Coil and Heir Apparent are technically two different tracks, with a seamless transition. Hessian Peel from the same Album actually has stylistical shifts in one song.
For a big shift in musical styles, you should've checked out Hessian Peel from this record. It's a bit more dynamic overall and I think a more powerful track on this record. Either way there isn't a bad song on this album.
You'd be surprised what Mikael can do with his growls. This song was just laying it on thick and brutal. Most of their other songs have very nice contrast between heavy growls and soft beautiful singing which is also reflected in the dynamics and music. Took me a little longer to get into Heir Apparent, but when I did, I was hooked!
I am fairly sure you reacted to more growly Opeth before. In fact, looking at the recommendations on the bar to my right, there's a vid of yours where the thumbnail reads "Dude, when those *GROWLS* come in!" Which ties into the other thing I was about to mention, you seem to have a very strange relation with this band and they never seem to "stick" with you. WHich, on a surface level at least, is kind of strange, because they sound like your jam on paper, a heavy band that is expansive enough in sound to be considered a "gateway drug" of sorts into the more extreme subgenres. And that might also be the problem, they're one of those bands that people will just naturally shoehorn into every single theme, even when, as in this case, they're only tangencially related. I mean, Opeth, when they're good, are really very very good, but they're really nowhere near as expansive stylistically as folks sometimes make them out to be. It's really a balancing act between 90s death metal and 70s prog rock, and whatever folk or jazz happens to get thrown in is one that was already present as an influence in those genres. SOmetimes they merge it excellently, here not so much and it's not really supposed to, they're really different tracks by design. There *is* a tonal shift, but there really isn't a "flow" between the tracks.
Two things for you to keep in mind if you want to check more Opeth out. This (Watershed) is their last album with growls, by now, half of their discography is growl-less, so there's a ton of stuff closer to Coil to check on your own. Another thing to keep in mind is that they rarely use only growls on their tracks, no matter how heavy. They mix things up with cleans and harshes, so that mix that you mention is the rule on their heavier albums, and the solely harsh vocals is actually an exception. You are definitely onto something about these tracks being unrelated. Heir Apparent was going to be the opening track on Watershed but the band settled on Coil because they preferred having a softer intro. Coil is also their only duet so far, and the only track to feature female vocals. Great insight as always, Bryan!
Yeah, the songs are lyrically unrelated but go SO WELL together musically that I always miss Coil when exposed to Heir Apparent as a solitude track. Love them both individually but together they're almost unmatched!

I've checked out a handful of 20 Century Classical as well as some avant garde stuff. Schnittke, Alon Mor, Martikainen, Arvo Pärt, Gleb Kolyadin, Penderecki, and Manuel Chrysaphes have all been on the channel. It's always a joy to pick apart that genre because typically there's a lot more in the performance aspect to dive into and appreciate as well as the overall composition.

"Coming for you" by Twelve foot ninja is Perfect for the stylistic changes. I absolutely love Opeth though and the two of these songs are fantastic in my opinion.
It, yes, has to be a personal thing; For me the repetitiveness is so beautiful, it's just like laying on bathing mattress on an almost calm sea.. Just small waves going on and on.. and you are all relaxed and awake, watching the starlit sky, just feeling it all

As others have mentioned, Watershed was the last album with growls from Opeth before they entered full retro-prog mode. You can already hear that retro-prog element strongly here, but mixed (not always smoothly) with their death metal side. It's an album I've never completely warmed to, though it's definitely full of brilliant moments, and the Coil/Heir Apparent combo may be the best (though The Lotus Eaters and Hessian Peel give it a run for its money). Opeth in general are the perfect fit for the week's themes given that they built their entire career over big shifts from the dark, heavy, brutality of their death metal side to the soft, beautiful elements of their proggy-folk side. This definitely isn't the first time you've heard Opeth's growls: Blackwater Park, The Drapery Falls, and Forests of October all had them too. In fact, the only Opeth you've heard without growls is, I think, Burden and the one track in Swedish. Nearly half of their discography is growl-less by this point, though IMO I think they lost much of their originality when they ditched the growls and death metal. I love prog (especially classic prog), but Opeth just don't bring as much innovation to prog as they did to death metal. As for being disappointed the shifts weren't bigger, I mean, before Opeth literally no other bands were shifting from folky prog to death metal. Those kinds of shifts became rather commonplace after Opeth, but a huge chunk of their reputation and influence came precisely because nobody had heard such shifts/juxtapositions of such different styles/tones before.
You're right, in context these were probably big stylistic shifts for the time. And that's another level of subjectivity that could come into play with suggestions and expectations.

You’ve probably already gotten your songs for this week picked out, but if you ever revisit this theme, Slipknot put out an album called Mate Feed Kill Repeat back before they signed Corey Taylor. Apart from scavenging some of the tracks for their first two official albums, they’ve generally pretended the album doesn’t exist, but there’s a song called “Do Nothing/Bitchslap” on there that should give you some musical whiplash if that’s what you’re after. In a similar vein would be POD’s track “Selah” off of their Brown album.
Ya know, I should have called this week "Musical Whiplash" as I think that hits my expectations a bit more about how wide of a swing in style I'm looking for. I'll check that track out one of the days as I've never heard any pre-Corey Slipknot.
Crux by Moonthooth (off the album Crux) has a really nice Genre mix (Blues / rock -> Death) ... the guys vocals are so good on this album.. Widower by the Dillinger Escape Plan for a nice shift as well, you cant beat the chaos of Dillinger being tamed into to ballad... at least for a little while
I never understood why people felt the need to hear this together like they are related in someway. I mean other than the tracks being next to each other. Both are good in their own way I just never got the whole”bro you have to listen to them together !!” Vibe. For stylistic change I would suggest Moon above sun below.
I love these two songs but I can see why they don't hit the stylistic changes that you're after. I don't know if you're still taking suggestions for the week but Devin Townsend 'Genesis' is definitely one to do, as is 'Singularity' from the same album. Ayreon 'The Day that the World Breaks Down' is another one that stylistically changes like 3 times. I'd suggest BTBAM 'Ants of the Sky' or Ne Obliviscaris 'Forget Not' but I know you've done those before!
The poing of these two songs is offer first a soft ballad, (the only song sung by a woman by the band), and then throw their most demonic and heavy song to date. Hair apparent is a great song but it needs more listens to fully digest it, it have a structure with memorable epic sections, specially the ending. This was their last death metal album, but still manages to have a perfect 50/50 ratio between prog rock and death metal.
Opeth Albums, pre-waterdshed, are mostly on the heavier side compared to what they make now. But if you're looking for complete shifts in the way the instruments and lyrics are used, you'd have to choose 2 songs, from 2 totally different albums. A good comparison I like is. Take a cloth rag, now cut that rag into 8 different shaped pieces. That rag now has different shapes, but can still go together. That's how I view an opeth album. Each song being a piece that is totally different, but when all the pieces are put together, you have one album that just goes together so smoothly. BlackWaterPark is a great example. You have incredibly dark and heavy songs like, Leper Affinity, or the actual song BlackWater Park. And then beautiful songs like harvest. No growls, smooth acoustic guitar, just a great song. But it still has that same unique sound the rest of BWP has. The only 2 songs I can think of in the same album that sound totally different, and are, is Masters Apprentice, and A Fair Judgement, from the album Deliverance.
As albums are "concept" albums, Opeth is a "concept" band. The fact that you liked Coil, but Heir Apparent made you uncomfortable is actually what you set out to find. Heir Apparent is supposed to make you feel that way.

The contrast is in the transition from the beautiful and harmonic Coil to the hard and dissonant Hair Apparent. Judged independently, Heir apparent is indeed one of Opeth's least dynamic songs. It is their only song without clean vocals and is hard and heavy almost throughout, both of which are unusual.
Ooh, a really good song for "big transitions" is "The Count of Tuscany" by Dream Theater. Or... I mean, I could name at least a dozen DT songs like that off the top of my head.

It's too bad the audio quality on this particular upload is not the best. It's an even more enthralling listen with better audio. One of my favourite Opeth tracks, if not my favourite. Also a good decision to include Coil as it's a great intro to Heir Apparent. I wouldn't listen to one without the other.
Haven't listened to a full album yet and don't really have a feeling of need to start now. I appreciate their place in metal history and there's nothing wrong with their music but nothing yet has jumped out at me as something I must further explore.
Not sure this is the best entry point to Opeth on these terms. I'd opt for songs like Deliverance, Blackwater Park or Ghost of Perdition... and then dig into the respective albums from there.
I gotta disagree there. I adore every single opeth album, and i was there from the very beginning, listening to them d they came out. And honestly, in retrospect, I've come to recommend Watershed d the first listen to Opeth, for the reason that I really think it incorporates every single element of opeth both past and present. It really is comprehensive Opeth, in every sense. What could have been a better release for their midpoint career in this respect?
Opeth is a band that I grew to like. I've really only listened to Blackwater Park and I really like that album. I just recently downloaded this album but have only heard a song or two.
You're in for lots of treats. I think Ghost Reveries is their best, with Still Life, Blackwater Park, and My Arms Your Hearse all close behind. Everything they released after Watershed has no growls and is in their retro-prog style. Damnation was also a no-growls album, though more in their purely acoustic/soft/beautiful mode.

if you want heavier Opeth I can suggest some for sure. Opeth is a fantastic band that flips back and forth in albums as easy as flipping a coin.

sounds like your personal taste doesn't match up here or like you said maybe hearing the entire album would put it into perspective for ya, but you're the critical one ha, I just listen to what sounds good/doesn't sound good (following norms I suppose) and lyrics are always last on my list, also pretty sure you did blackwater park?? that's got lots of harsh vocals

It's too bad the audio quality on this particular upload is not the best. It's an even more enthralling listen with better audio. One of my favourite Opeth tracks, if not my favourite. Also a good decision to include Coil as it's a great intro to Heir Apparent. I wouldn't listen to one without the other.
Maybe the full width of the audio doesn't come through with YT's compression but I listened to it through Apple Music's lossless format.

Haven't listened to a full album yet and don't really have a feeling of need to start now. I appreciate their place in metal history and there's nothing wrong with their music but nothing yet has jumped out at me as something I must further explore.

Not sure this is the best entry point to Opeth on these terms. I'd opt for songs like Deliverance, Blackwater Park or Ghost of Perdition... and then dig into the respective albums from there.

I gotta disagree there. I adore every single opeth album, and i was there from the very beginning, listening to them d they came out. And honestly, in retrospect, I've come to recommend Watershed d the first listen to Opeth, for the reason that I really think it incorporates every single element of opeth both past and present. It really is comprehensive Opeth, in every sense. What could have been a better release for their midpoint career in this respect?

Opeth is a band that I grew to like. I've really only listened to Blackwater Park and I really like that album. I just recently downloaded this album but have only heard a song or two.
You're in for lots of treats. I think Ghost Reveries is their best, with Still Life, Blackwater Park, and My Arms Your Hearse all close behind. Everything they released after Watershed has no growls and is in their retro-prog style. Damnation was also a no-growls album, though more in their purely acoustic/soft/beautiful mode.
