The other day, I saw a guy getting held up and robbed at gun point. I was going to call the police, but then I thought "wait a minute.... I'm not a lawyer. I can't determine if this is illegal."
Someone was having a heart attack, but I’m not a doctor so I couldn’t know that for sure to call 911, so I just kept going. Hope a doctor walked by to help him though.

I'm actually glad that there are people willing to challenge Jobst on his investigations. Even if they're not the best challenges seeing Jobst defend his position gives me a better understanding of the situation as a whole.

I would genuinely recommend Moonie's video if you haven't seen it; it made me want to tear my hair out for many of the same reasons Karl portrays here, but the point of the video was more about how making public accusations can open one up to legal risk, and how the things presented within Karl's videos did not constitute definitive proof.
And karl has opened himself up to legal risk, but that was a risk that he made an informed decision to take; the same cannot be said of your average viewer or a random person trying to emulate this type of investigation, and those are the people who actually need to see Moonie's video.

Upselling is one of the things they train you for. Bestbuy is notorious for their upsell tactics.

It's like becoming an infantryman then quitting because you're supposed to use firearms. It is a basic sales strategy used in all companies that have sales personnel. Your job is to sell things & sell well. Of course, despite refusing to upsell, he was the best salesman of all time.
There's no way you talk to employees like that as a manager/supervisor and keep your job, either. He's clearly either making the whole thing up or exaggerating what happened. Coming from someone who's seen a supervisor get demoted simply for calling 2 employees stupid (some other contributing factors too but that was the last straw).

People are blaming Karl for the backlash Moonie is getting, but it was Moonie's own ineffective research that caused this video. Karl has EVERY right to defend himself.
And every serious youtuber (Moonie included) gets sponsorships. This is a moot point.
He got backlash long before this video, and it's for good reason. This video itself is Karl backlashing. It's a byproduct of having a massive platform/reach, that your missteps have a proportionate level of people responding to them.
(and criticism does not equal hate or harassment, which is a whole separate matter and not something that's prevalent by all appearances)

This isn't where you're coming from, but its the sort of thing overzealous fans will make the focus to characterize this whole thing as something it's not/to victim frame Moony. Anyways, I don't mean to come down so hard on you in particular, it's just one of those things you see people saying without any evidence enough times it starts to grind your gears.
The part Jobst mentions but didn't let play out in the podcast where he quit best buy about buying things with 1's, he says he "borrowed a couple thousand dollars from his dad", took it to the bank and exchanged it all for 1 dollar bills, and went back to the best buy he had quit to buy everything he needed for youtube, and because the purchase was over a certain amount the manager had to come and count the money. He says he bought "microphones, capture cards, hard drives, musical instruments, [and] sound proof boards". As the manager finished counting his mountain of 1 dollar bills, he told him "this is my notice, I'm never coming back here, I'm not giving you two weeks, I'm done. Penalize me, I don't give a shit" as if he would even still have a job after he publicly cussed him out, said he quit, and stormed out after selling a customer her ipod. In the same bit he says he grew up "lower middle class" and somehow reconciles that with being able to borrow what sounds like about 5,000 dollars from your dad for a theatrical resignation from best buy. As he finishes the story the host just goes "whoo...."

Personally I think they used it as their own loan/borrow piggy bank. It's been sitting there far far too long for them not to interact with it. The only question I have giving benefit of the doubt, if he really DIDN'T know about it and he JUST found out about it he should had made it a priority to get that money off his hands asap. Then hire someone in PR consulting to go over what to say should anything come up about it to have his ducks in a row. ...He didn't do any of that until after the fact.

Former Best Buy employee here: Best Buy would never let you bring your own decorations. They have company equipment and decorations sent from corporate or approved vendors. Another example of jirard lying out of his ass lmao
I really don't think ANY large chain would let a random employee walk in with whatever decorations they felt like bringing. They have a very specific brand image to abide to.

I worked at Best Buy in 2009-2012. We were allowed to bring stuff in if management thought it would look good and helped sales or made for a fun addition.

I work in a homedepot, and I can't even take a cap with the logo of a company we don't carry products off.
I worked at an EB games and we had a manager who was dedicated to selling stuff the same way Gerard claims he was. The general manager had to tell him to knock it off because customers were complaining about how insistent he was. You don't have to put effort into talking to customers about video games, they come to you for that. Literally customers often come to the store intending to ask you about which ones are good or not and why. Almost every employee who works at a place like that is passionate about video games and will hype up their favourite games, Gerard would not have stood out in that regard unless he was over the top about it, which customers DON'T like.

The way he describes a legal case, the lawyers aren't allowed to make any accusations in their opening statements and only start gathering evidence after the trial begins.
You're assuming that he being a lawyer means that he understands everything that he covers. He's not a Charity Tax and Charity Fraud lawyer. Obviously he was always going to be wrong when going at Karl.

It is clear from context that they meant 1 bigger donation is better than several smaller donations. I have no idea why though. Several people have said the account didn't earn interest, so any benefits of a single larger donation would obviously be offset by that.

A lot of people have viewed Jirard that way until very recently (I always had my doubts about Jirard but never expected charity fraud). That said, Moony did end up taking down that video after he realized it was doing more damage than good while admitting he was basically completely wrong. Guess that's what happens when you make a video of a serious topic without doing thorough research... sigh. Moony's other content is better at least (this was actually pretty atypical of his average video)

Conflict of interest is an important bias to be aware of. It does not necessarily mean that the person is acting with bias, but overall it is a factor, and it is often declared when biases matter. I do not think Moon's accusations were in line, but the concept itself is valid.

It’s kinda nuts that BOTH times Karl was accused of spreading fraud accusations for money, it was regarding videos that he didn’t sponsor.
The take away is to sponsor them in the future haha. Because clearly choosing not to sponsor a video exactly to prevent people from questioning your motive doesn't work at all.
is not like the influx of viewers from drama doesnt bring him money for the other videos, just because you know how to play the system doesnt mean you are free of blame, if profit wasnt the point, then a video wouldnt have been needed, just forward it to the authorities, consult with them when you can talk about it, if and when you can. IF jirards plan was to run with the money, the video would of been amazing for him, he could of just run away with it... Lets not make jesus out of karl, he is a drama merchant , and he has an incentive to see people in the wrong light, im not saying jirard is innocent, he is not, but is the punishment right for the crime? The only we know for certain is that he kept money for a long period of time, and eventually donated it out of pressure from people investigating, we will never know for sure if he was planning on something bad or not, but lets just say lets assume that it WAS bad, he planned to steal it all. is he then as guilty as someone who actually stole money? Because obviously he thought about stealing it, but he didnt, he donated it in the end? Should he be punished as much as someone who did steal it? or less? what about someone who missued funds for charity, used it for personal reason, and stole a bunch of money as well? and was found guilty, and even then, he never apologized or admited to doing it? Like trump with his charity? I dont see every post or every video of trump filled with people talking about his fraudulent activites? what is the endgame with jirard? to make an example out of him? to just bully someone with a good reason for it? Why is there such discrepancy on the punishemnt for differnt peoples? Jirard shouldnt be allowed to go outside ever again for thinking about stealing money, but trump should be allowed to be president for actually being convited of running a fraudulent charity?
I am not defending jirard again, but its hard to see this and see the difference and just think, yeah it makes sense, to me at this point, it feels more like a bunch of people who enjoy witchhunting people and like having a reason for it, so they are morally justified, they dont care about the crimes, or who is affected, they just like to punish and hurt people, but they wont go against people who they will face backlash from, like trump, where his followers might be worse than you

In my opinion, it isnt a question of whether he is making money, it's a question of "has he earned it?". And I believe that in this Completionist conflict, he has earned it

I’m 100% sure that the leaked Discord call nuked any chance of Jirard actually suing you, let alone being successful in court. He admitted to literally everything he was being accused of and even begged you guys not to ruin his life.
It doesn't count as leaked when the guys recording it are the ones putting it out. Also, the second video had audio that, if included in the first video, would have painted Jirard in a better light. Showing snippets like that out of context and not including all his points isn't responsible journalism, even if he's right.

Actually if someone confessed to a crime like that unprompted, the police would first find out if the crime happened, if the person did in fact commit the crime, and then charge them. Or that's how it should go, assuming the cops did their jobs properly, i.e. building the case first, then charging the person.

I'll admit it wasn't obvious, but he kept making gaming statements at the time that just didn't add up to me. I wasn't ever really vocal about it because he just seemed like every other big asshole "gamer" who claims to be great because of their gaming skills, (which doesn't usually make for great content for most people so I never got why people buy into that toxic culture when they don't just want a niche audience) but I figured that it just wasn't content for me. I thought people just liked that content because it had a narrative they liked, and most people are pretty shallow. Jerard never struck me as actually BEING that character, but he did strike me as playing that character, so I didn't care for it. I just thought I had matured beyond this juvenile type of content where you are an asshole for the sake of entertainment.

The fact Moony calls the call “outside evidence” and that needing to listen to that would still mean Karl’s allegations don’t hold up or don’t stand on their own is hilarious but also grinds my gears. Like, the call isn’t just outside evidence. It’s supporting and gives a much broader scope of the situation than, as Karl says, the tiny bit of information he decided to put in his videos.
There is no way that he knew the regional, state and national sales numbers at Best Buy if he was working ANY POSITION lower than "Assistant Sales Manager" of his store.
Best Buy did not share that info with regular employees, neither did any other retail job I've ever worked.
All these Best Buy Stories from Jirard seem sketchy as hell or down right lies.
Sometimes at my current job we do get shown the numbers and we can see how well we're doing, however this is only over 2 specific stores of the brand run by the same management. And I have to preface that by saying that it's the most laid back and awesome management I've ever had.
At my last job in the morning before openings, we were told the profits from yesterday vs how close that was to the target, as well as our ranking among the brand stores for day/week/month.
What I did not get at either was information about specific areas of a store vs other stores, that would never be covered by anyone lower than a regional manager overseeing multiple stores in a chain. So for Jirard to so brazenly claim what he did is just crazy.
Sort of... as an advisor you would not be able to use PowerBI but depending on your relationship a manager may log in for you and let you see it.
For those that dont know it, here is moony apology that he made in the pinned comment of the video:
I watched the response video. Instead of adding to Karl's legal fees, or making a response video of my own, I just wanted to apologize. I thought the video was both level-headed, and insightful. And I appreciate that.
Karl is right: I didn't engage with the entire body of evidence, thereby getting crucial facts wrong -- I also unnecessarily brought in his finances, I took what should've been a neutral legal analysis and made it hostile towards him (and Mutahar) without just cause, and I came away with a flawed conclusion as a result.
My video was put together hastily, and without the care such a serious matter deserves. This situation has been a good learning experience for me when it comes to how best to make TH-cam videos in the future, especially those which might touch upon legal topics. As I said in my own video, professionals have standards! And it's time to think about and raise my own.
If, in the future, we do see Jirard or Open Hand bite the metaphorical bullet, I'll make an apology video of sorts, dissecting the problems in my prior video as a legal exercise, explaining in detail what I got wrong. Karl, if you're reading this, if that day comes, I'd even like to talk to you about it perhaps, and put your thoughts directly in that video as a way of burying the hatchet.
Despite my past snippiness, I do appreciate the work that you've done in bringing attention to the injustice in the world. It is my own zeal, perhaps, that has been misplaced. When you're wrong, you're wrong, and I sincerely apologize.

I’ve been watching Karl for years and he seems like an honest guy to me.
He doesn’t rely on you to just trust him he always gives examples and evidence to prove what he means.

The following is still the most amazing part of this story for me… I had never heard the name Karl Jobst in my life, until I happened to tune in to the revamped X-Play to see if it was worth the time (it wasn’t), BUT on the episode, someone mentioned the WATA and fraud situations. This someone was very passionate about the potential market manipulation and it’s effect on a hobby he loves. He suggested specifically to go seek out a pair of investigative long form videos on TH-cam by a man named Karl Jobst. I found it intriguing and did so, and now here we are years later…
The person who was hyping up Jobst, his work, and encouraging the audience to find his stuff and get educated, as I imagine you’ve already figured out…

It's over Jobst, he animated himself as Phoenix Wright and played the turnabout music the whole time.... so, you know, that makes him correct, apparently.
Yeah but you know who won while dressed as Phoenix Wright? Furio Tigre and look what happened to him. LOL
That was bugging so much. Just feels so lazy and unoriginal. Use the odd phoenix wright sound or clip as a meme, but if you have it on constantly, it just tells me you're boring.
