This would make sense considering how consistently he seems to miss Karl's points, he could simply have poor judgment/reasoning.
Again, that is devil's advocacy, but being manipulative doesn't make him smart either and he may genuinely believe in some of his points even if he is intentionally lying and/or defaming Karl.

I’ve been a collector for 20+ years at this point (just turned 35) and what always made collecting fun was the awesome amount of games you could get for affordable prices, especially compared to buying them new upon release.
If games plummeted in value, the likelihood of my business continuing with games as the focus (profit wise) would definitely shift. I’d start pushing stuff with greater margins.

I can't really tell if he's intentionally lying or if he's just ignorant and doesn't know what he's talking about. Cause the lies he tells are embarrassing considering how easily they can be debunked. Like, he completely missed the point behind why marketing your own product without disclosing your relationship to the company (if you have one) is unethical and illegal when there are FTC laws that clearly state why. Plus, he seems to misinterpret a lot of things that Karl says and doesn't even understand what the video is about. He thinks Karl is attacking the entire graded video game industry, community and collectors when his video mainly focuses on two companies and their unethical and manipulative business practices. I really don't know how he managed to overlook this. Perhaps he's just not very intelligent.

@@nissan_skylineI’m pretty sure he’s lying because those things you pointed out. I’m 26mins through Karl’s video and I haven’t heard that man discuss or refute one actual point that Karl made. He’s barely discussing the same topic, instead he goes on attacking his straw man and making implications about Karl.
I don’t want to believe that a man that can speak so well and seems to be at least moderately successful, could watch Karl’s video and so clearly miss the point.
Maybe I can chalk it up to him being so close to the situation and emotionally invested that he subconsciously blocked out the point of the video because it would make him feel like his was played for a fool if he was/is a regular patron of Wata and Heritage. But even then, I would expect him to defend those companies directly if that were the case and he hasn’t referenced them or their owners yet.
Edit: finished the video; he did start referencing Wata and some of Karl’s actual points but he straight up lied about all of them. Yeah, this dude was lying the whole time.

When he says "real" collectors, he means speculative investors. The actual real collectors saw one of the best selling, common games of all time sell for millions and thought, "That doesn't seem right". But Karl went and dove into this head first, did a bunch of frankly excellent research, and published it. Then immediately, people were trying to discredit and cancel him. This was an important piece of reporting, and the backlash only reinforces that. Nobody likes to be left holding the bag, but that is a risk you should be prepared for when speculating on any type of volatile market.

      I agree.
I was already casually collecting video games from a very young age. The only reason I would care about the market is so I don't get ripped off with outrageous prices. I don't care about rising and falling prices so I can sell them later, I care about that so I am able know if I am getting a good deal. I think that buying super common games for more than 3 times their original retail price is ridiculous. I buy games that came with a case with it because I wasn't the game to be protected so I can play it.
I am a collector that wouldn't be opposed to selling games i no longer want. That is collecting.
Buying games only for the sake of profit is not collecting. It's investment.

What they don't do is brag about the future value of a collectible and how much they bought it for because at that point it's not the item they care about but just the value it has or could potentially have which is no different from just throwing actual money on a table and talking about how they are investing it.

It's real easy to figure out. If the prices bottomed out tomorrow would you cheer and run out and buy the games you couldn't afford. Or would you panic sell your collection and hope to recoup some of your investment. One person is a collector, the other is a speculator.

Yeah this comment sums it up nicely. A real collector doesn't really care about the value beyond maybe ensuring that the things they're collecting are in good condition, which happens to be more valuable and thus pricey. They just want to own the thing.

Yeah but I think most collectors would probably be still somewhat pissed they bought overpriced games and it may negatively impact the sale of such games for legitimate traders and investors within the market but over all yes when it comes down to it Speculators will panik more when the Market crashes as their investments are reliant on a bubble which is very risky.

As a collector myself the actions of WATA has hurt my ability to continue trying to complete my NES collecton because people jack up the price of all games regardless of rarity. Even before your viral video came out there were plenty of us that saw that it was a bubble that was being manipulated. I appreciate your video exposing them and I'm sorry that they felt compelled to be dishonest about you and your well put together arguments against what they are continuing to do.

Agreed. The general public doesn't know the difference between "rare" and "sought after". Those two terms are used interchangeably, these days.

This is why I gave up collecting. I was starting up the hobby and then I saw people high-balling the price of EVERYTHING, I decided that it wasnt worth it, I rather emulate at this point.

As a casual NES cartridge collector, I agree so hard about this. Everyone with any game thinks it's worth big bucks. It's not. Loose carts have gotten stupidly expensive but it's just choaking out collectors and attracting rubes who think the value is just going up up up.

    • @highspotplays

Same here. The guy in the video claims to be an authority because he's been collecting for ten years... I've been collecting casually since the 1990s, and the Heritage/WATA thing is another in a line of developments over the years that are pricing me out of certain sectors of the hobby.
I also casually collect VHS, and was very disheartened to see Heritage is beginning to get into that market as well.
