      @@MediaDivision that makes perfect sense. It would be actually impossible to deliver this kind of specialized and polished content daily (not even weekly) and if it helps to catch the attention of your target clients then having 80k or 8m isn't a big deal. I've got the Canon 0.95, an Elitar Soligor 25mm 0.95, and had a Canon 50mm f0.75 (just put up a video on it!), so the history of how folks actually shot with these before it was more convenient is amazing. I was really curious about that more modern film that was shot almost entirely with re-housed versions of the 50mm f0.95 too. Crazy. I admire that dedication and curiosity!

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow… I thought I was a nerd… you live it. What is that accent? You assume rightly, that the "rear element" is an integral part of these lenses… it works like a focal reducer. If you remove it, the flange extends, but the lens gets slower accordingly and you only have a fast lens after that… blah blah blah ;-)
      Looking at your sample pictures you can tell that your lens suffers from the same problem my Zeiss (and all other Xray lenses) suffers… a curved focal plane. As far as I am informed, the Xray cameras had a vacuum driven negative holder that would give the curvature. This allows for much simpler and cheaper optical designs. My R-Biotar is designed for 6x7 negative, meaning that the FF crop has less distortions compared to your images

      @@MediaDivision Thanks so much for the detailed and thoughtful reply! That earned a sub on its own :D That is really fascinating. I have an obsession with weird lenses - particularly older ones. I was really pleased that I got the 0.75 to work with the custom clamp, but obviously in practice due to that curvature it wasn't the most err, practical. For... anything haha. The bokeh was nuts though. I'm all for wild and out of control bokeh rather than nice smooth bokeh.
      I'd love to see an x-ray camera sometime - I guess they'd just be huge machines though, with a space for the lenses to fit. That R-Biotar is beautiful!

I was so impressed with your delivery and cinematography that i decided to sell all my sony camera gear and lenes and buy an s1h (which was all i could afford) and get a friend to loan me like $300 so i could buy a used zeiss 1.4 35mm contax. All my "camera" friends in my wechat group called me stupid
    "why the fuck would you tank all your money into an s1h and buy some shit old lens..."
    all their expertise told them i should buy premium glass.....
    But I knew in my bones you are the kind of guy that i should listen to .... you dont just shoot images ... you MAKE them... just like Kubrick
    The images I have been able to produce blow me away some times... especially since i am a total noob and just started with cameras like 6 months ago (bought my sony a6400 for twitch streaming (gave up video games for cinematography and porn)

      Hey Zen, sorry for the late response, YT put your comment in spam. Super happy that we can do that for you... this is the way. Ironically, the Zeiss Super Speed episode was predominantly shot on A Kinefinity Mavo LF... and that has a Sony sensor, just like the S1H does. It is really about how you film what, and little about the gear. Vintage lenses wide open have their magic, though. I don't mind porn..... that is some pretty weired stuff you do there.... but I get that you strive for more. Even the fetish genre will always be kind of one dimensional... there is little story to tell when people are f#*@ink. You are a lucky man that your wife supports you in your passion (all of them).

    I rarely comment on TH-cam, but you guys totally deserve attention for the overall quality displayed in this video. Thank you, really! Just one thing is not so clear to me - probably I should rewatch some specific parts of the video: how did Kubrick manage to obtain such a deep Depth of Field in the candle sequence, filming at f0.7? Did he actually stopped down the lens? It is clear to my eyes that your result at f0.7 has a much shallower DoF. Sorry in advance for the probable dumb question, and thanks again for this production of yours. I am gonna share it with all my friends and colleagues. Amazing!!

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot Riccardo...totally our pleasure. No, he shot at f0.7... it was the whole point and otherwise it would have been impossible using 100iso film stock. The DoF is indeed very narrow. The trick is to compose the scene in a way, to keep all important things on the same focal plane. The difference to out "The Mission" film is, that we used a 100mm lens (instead of a 50mm) and we had a full frame sensor instead of s35 film... resulting in a much deeper DoF.One thing besides the speed is, that the Biotar that we used has a slightly bend focal plane... it works like a light tilt shift on top of the narrow FoV. That was not a dumb question and we always appreciate viewers that really dig in deep!

    This video really blows both my eyes and my mind.. it opens many possibilities that i have been observing since 2016..
    I'm vice president of drone valley, a consortium among researcher, industry, and administration.. in 2016 we have explored the potential to use primary drones in filmmaking industry, we think that this is going to be a game changer, unless we solve the problem of lens.....

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad you got something out of it Jose. Not sure what ultra fast lenses could be used for in that context. The weight and shallow DoF makes them not drone friendly.... at all.

    • @joseyang5098
      @joseyang5098 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MediaDivision : nowadays there are already many drone film festivals across the globe, and drone has already been using widely in film-making to this day.. however, the current challenge for drone filming is to be used at night or low visibility shooting..
      the weight it's a problem for drone actually.. there are also some industrial drones that have payload above 50 kg.. (50kg used to be the limit).. and there are already many multi-axis stabilizer which can make the drone moving really super smoothly and steady..
      the only problem is really the lens.. though there are already the multi-spectrum camera that can capture light beyond visible light spectrum, however it requires AI to recolor it in the post-processing, which takes really a lot of time and effort.. and most filmmakers still prefer to see with the feeling of "natural light"..
      another effect that ultra fast lenses can do but multi-spectrum camera can't replace is that supper thin foreground.. which can put the main object into the subject and eliminate the background all "naturally".. no other solution than ultra fast lenses will be able to deliver such effect "naturally"..

      @@MediaDivision Thanks! It looks like I've accidentally stumbled upon a fascinating channel with content that will keep me up for days. I wonder if you could do a video about the Hasselblad Zeiss lenses and the Metabones Speedbooster adapting these V-Mount lenses to the Fujifilm GFX100 series - I really want to shoot on that setup one day, as it is the motion picture equivalent of the 70mm pictures the Apollo astronauts took on the Moon, with a sensor that has a surface area larger than that of an Alexa 65.

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you found us… and thank you so much for support us by being a Lynch member. Appreciated… you will make the future episodes possible. Well, we already have a video about medium format lenses for filming with the Mamiya 645 and the Kipon focal reducer. While the image Circle of the 645 is slightly smaller and the booster goes down to FF, the principles remain the same.
      It is here: th-cam.com/video/ntohzgTm5Lo/w-d-xo.html
      The Hasselblad V system is a 6x6 medium format (slightly smaller than IMAX but yes, bigger that 65mm 5-perf), but of course… you will cropping away a lot of the image to get to something like 16:9 or another suitable aspect for film.
      I don't quite know what you expect from that system.
      I don't want to pop a bubble, but a larger format does not have an intrinsically different look than a smaller one. Your boosted system using a 80mm @f2.8 will generate the same image that you will get using a 44mm @f1.5. The GFX has a very high resolution, but that is not intrinsic to the large format and I have smaller format cameras that have more resolution than larger format ones. In times of Apollo, it was just the best way to achieve high resolution images allowing higher magnifications.
      If you want to see how a camera with a large format sensor twice the size of IMAX and a whooping 200 Megapixel would look… we emulate one right here:

    Amazing content! All around epic. I've got to go in defense of the Canon 55mm f1.2 though. The FD-EF adapter with the lens element is dog shit, every single one I personally tested at least. Canon has produced one that the glass is actually good but its no easy to find and its quite expensive. So, all of the "ghosting" effect and the lack of sharpness is mostly due that. A converted one, a no-glass adapter OR one with the proper Speedbooster (FD-NEX? FD-M43?) would perform considerably better.
    Keep up the good work!

      @@MediaDivision - Great work! I tested an FD 55mm f/1.2 SSC and it is 4k resolution across the full frame wide open. The speed booster still enables 4k (~2k LW/PH) with slight degradation (and slight curvature of focal plane). I also have an observation and question: In your video, the SLR Magic 25mm images at f/0.92 look darker than the Ibelux 40mm images set to f/1.4 and the so does the Canon FD 55mm f/1.2+speed booster at f/0.90 which looks even darker than either of these. What was your shutter speed for each of these tests?

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks… lenses can have different brightness at the same f-stop … that is why T-stop was invented for cinema. T (transmission) is what effectively comes through the entrance pupil. Coatings and the number of lens elements are relevant for this… especially in vintage lenses. Of course a FF lens can easily handle 4K…. or 8K… or more depending on the amount of light and the f-stop used. If you watch our „beyond imax“ episode we show how a old large format lens is able to resolve 16k without breaking in sweat. The limiting factor of resolution in an optical system is the „nyquist effect“.

    • @churchrapture
      @churchrapture 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MediaDivision - Thanks for replying! Right, the Nyquist frequency is the limiting effect in any resolving signals in any wave. But do you know what the shutter speeds were in those fast lens comparisons? Could the darkness difference between lenses be from different shutter speeds? Also, I don't find that many lenses, vintage or modern, can resolve 4k full frame to the edges like the FD 55mm f/1.2 can. It does have the dreamy and lower contrast effect also wide open that can make it appear to be soft yet it does actually resolve the detail. However, I was mainly trying to see if you were doing a technical comparison of the fast lenses or maybe you were not trying to document the shutter speed. In any case your work extremely awesome and full of details that are very interesting and informative! Great work and God bless!

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In filmmaking we „always“ use a 180 degree shutter… unless there is a very good reason not to. At 24 FPS that is 1/48th of a second in all the given cases. So, no.
      Of course shooting wide open will cause loss in detail to a point where resolution doesn’t matter in that regard. If you are interested, we have whole episode about the FD including the 55 SSC and it’s improved sibling, the 55 SSC aspherical (reduced fringing) on the channel. Thank for the flowers. Have a good one

    i love highest quality video when TH-cam Support 32K & 16K with Codec x265 (HEVC - H.265) with high refresh Rate Like 500fps for Future Monitors/TVs 500Hz, also Support Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync, am so excited about those and we need share our feedback to TH-cam Creators and developers, please do it people and i hope you all have a good life! :)

    • @MediaDivision
      @MediaDivision  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      32K or even 16K make no sense on TH-cam for the foreseeable future?! We know what HEVC is and TH-cam does not use it because of royalties they would have to pay to the MPEG group. For 4K+ resolution, TH-cam uses it's own VP9 codec that delivers similar compression quality then HEVC. 500fps refresh/playback makes no sense whatsoever in any given scenario. I am all for quality, but put it where it is meaningful and improves the experience
