This is more than just a song to me. I went right off the rails as a teenager. I remember listening to this on my discman walking in circles in the outside smoking area of a psyche ward I’d been put on. I hated myself and hated humanity. I was in the psyche ward for ripping my chest open with a broken Jack Daniels bottle. I needed 77 stitches which were given to me with no local anaesthetic. I can’t tell you why but I was just immensely sad as a teenager and young man. I began starving myself and eventually I weighed only seven stone which isn’t much for a six foot man. I still carry the scars of cigarette burns and lighter burns. You get the flame out of the lighter and turn the lighter upside down and heat up the metal part and then brand yourself with the hot metal. I have so many of these burns on my legs and arms. The music of the Manic Street Preachers made me feel like I wasn’t alone. When the album ‘Everything must go’ came out I realised that if I was to survive than everything I’d been holding onto had to go. I went back to University and finished my degree. I like so many different genres of music but there are only two bands and one artist that speak to me and have become a part of my identity. They are very different. They are The Manic Street Preachers, Motörhead and David Bowie. I’ve seen the Manics as a young band and I saw them not long ago. They still absolutely rock. I love the band and will always try to see them live when they’re touring. I’m always right at the front by the crash barriers. Seeing them live is an intensely physical and mentally ecstatic experience for me. For me they are ‘the best band in the world’.
Hi Jack, glad you got through the hard times, if it wasn't for bands like the Manics, I wouldn't be here either, keep smiling buddy, you are not alone! x
Toby Smith I really appreciate your reply. I wasn’t looking for pity, I just found this an anonymous way to blow off some emotion after listening to the song. I’ve always thought that Manics fans were great human beings, very ‘real’.
It’s hard to find people that are real my age man, I do sometimes wish I was born in the 70’s or something even though it was a hard time for everybody but there was so much emotion and change and energy through those years that will never be seen again, still though I feel blessed that I can still learn about this shit being born in 2003, my dad showed me this song and like you was also a bit of a nutcase, this man probably has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard, I hope you’re all still well and happy my man, we got the same name too! 😉😂
Brother the music did the same to me. I was smart and very intelligent but my dad died age 13 and drugs replaced him. This music just changed and shaped me from age 9/10 onwards. Stuck on methadone and benzos now age 33. Fucking mess mate honestly so don’t worry there’s others fucked up with you brother
I had a minidisk player with the first three albums generation terrorists, gold against the soul and the holy bible. It was just Richey you know his lyrics were just. It’s hard to explain I’m sure you know what im on about. I bought a telecaster just because he had one and then mustangs later on because of Kurt cobain
Someone (can't remember who) described James Dean Bradfield as a frontman in the best possible way - "Looks like a rugby player, sings like a choir boy". He looked manly in this era yet his voice was at its highest and most beautiful.
I've been obsessed with this song for the past few days! I must have heard it before, but didn't pay attention. What a great song, and those vocals! Sharp as a cheese grater, such clean distortion!
GATS is a criminally underrated album, tarnished i think by a couple of the faux-metal filler songs included. the catalogue of great lines of lyrics that this band has written puts most so-called "legendary" rock stars to shame.
Feels so weird being so early for this since the original song was released years and years before I was born. Love the manics, love you richey. Stay beautiful x
Age is no barrier to enjoying fabulous bands like the Manics! I love to hear that younger people are discovering them and obsessing about them as much as I did as a teenager. Stay beautiful x
Wiser, gifted, brilliant Love forever Manics A pioner fan of your stunning music Thanks for being there I’m 40 yrs old now and still remember the chords from generation terrorists and I chill again
I write this alone on my bed I've poisoned every room in my house The place is quiet and so alone Pretend there's something worth waiting for. There's nothing nice in my head The adult world took it all away Wake up with the same spit in my mouth Cannot tell if it's real or not. I try to walk in a straight line An imitation of dignity From despair to where From despair to where Outside opened mouthed cows Pass each other as if their drugged Down pale corridors of routine Where life falls unatoned The weak kick like straw Till the world means less and less Words are…
Hmmmm its just there..some Queen like Spread Your Wings, some Rolling Stones Street Fighting Man and a good measure of coolness and swagger. Just right as it is.
Great to see the video in better quality, but please replace the audio with the original 1993 single version. This 2020 remaster is messy and heavily brick-walled and really doesn't do the song justice, and the slightly different ending of the original single has been lazily re-created by just fading out the album version.
What does the white statue symbolize? Why aren't they attacked in the pink room? "I try to walk in a straight line An imitation of dignity From despair to where"
The first Manics album i came across was Gold Against The Soul and i fucking loved it... i was horrified when i found out other Manics fans hated it. That it was considered the odd one out etc... I think that nowadays stacked up against the rest of their work it has its own place and has earned it too... although i do gotta wonder if the socialist lefty Manics agree with all the cultural censorship of the modern left...do they support the active censorship of all media ? By mob rule ? I kinda hope they are wiser than that. Their music suggests they might be.
Can y’all stop f’ing remastering things? I want to hear it as originally recorded with all its warts and nuances Not compressed to hell and back, with the shit wrung out of it to try and pander to millennial ears
If youtube's where you go looking for that kind of thing then you can't know what you're talking about. Just sounds like a generation bashing excuse to me.
"There's nothing nice in my head
, the adult world took it all away"
Genius.
Thank you Richey

The SOB has that magical combination of talent and good looks so very few people ever possess. The bastard😆
I love that JDB has shown no fear of growing old.
Manly and wiser like old wines
@@nya1781 old is scared of james

Manic street preachers, best rock quartet, best rock trio ever. Even in their 50's just wow. Words r never enough, just cheap tarnished glitter
I love the manics, but Rush are probably the best trio ever? Both bands are fans of each other 👍
One of the few songs that kicks you in the butt in just the right way when you're down. at least for me.

I've been obsessed with this song for the past few days! I must have heard it before, but didn't pay attention. What a great song, and those vocals! Sharp as a cheese grater, such clean distortion!

To this day I'm still surprised that no one has made a bio pic about Nicky Wire.
Nice👍

You can’t dull quality .. and these lads become men have it in spades
One of the best bands of a generation ; along side The Clash , pure geniuses 👊🏻👊🏻
Back in the 90s I played this song over and over until I wore my Walkman batteries out.
Si señores estos son mis manic.....un saludo de nuevo .
Muy buena banda
I saw the manics for the very first time inTaiwan in November. It's changed my life about them. Haven't been able to listen to anything else since.
Class!!
Espero que algún día vengan a Chile. Los amo.
Game on 😂
Was this one of their first songs? Seeing Ritchie in a video always makes me wonder.

Génios
First time I see Richey James in motion since he unfortunately dissapeared.
I write this alone on my bed
I've poisoned every room in my house

Pretend there's something worth waiting for.
There's nothing nice in my head
The adult world took it all away
Wake up with the same spit in my mouth
Cannot tell if it's real or not.
I try to walk in a straight line
An imitation of dignity
From despair to where
From despair to where
Outside opened mouthed cows
Pass each other as if their drugged
Down pale corridors of routine
Where life falls unatoned
The weak kick like straw
Till the world means less and less
Words are…

Some of the left and right are as bad as each other.
GATS was the first Manics album I came across too... And I have the same feelings as you about it!
I've always loved it and never understood the hate. There are some absolutely massive tunes on it!
I genuinely love this record, always have and always will, one of my all time favourites ;)
Aqui no Brasil isso seria chamado de sonzeira do caralho
