MINI R50 / R52 / R53 - How To Remove Front Outer Door Handle & Key Barrel Removal

- Guide on how to remove the front outer door handle & key barrel from a BMW Mini R50 / R52 / R53.
The R50 & R53 (hatchback) models run from 2001 to 2006, and the R52 (Convertible) runs from 2004 to 2008.
NOTE: From 2005 onwards the design of the door card panel changed slightly. All the mounting screws are in the same location, but the rear lower screw is hidden by the armrest trim. The arm rest trim can be moved out of the way by sliding it forward. To slide it forward you can insert a flat trim tool in to the front of the arm rest and push down on the locating tab, allowing it to slide forward.

How did the assemble theses quickly at the factory. To service these would be easier if they had copied BmW with the bolt on the edge of the door.
Agreed. Poor designs! you can tell this Vehical were just put together.
Where you put the Allen key in and struggled to undo the bolt, there’s a hole in the inner door frame opposite so you can put a screwdriver right through.

only if you remove the window.. I’ve just done this job on my 2005 R53 and even with the window fully up that access wasn’t straight enough

hey, great video for removal thanks.Could you please do a follow up for replacing the door lock or at least some tricks to put it all back together. please don't say what others suggest (replacement is the reverse) because it's No were near that simple. Anyone trying their hand at this operation without proper instruction will have a very long day full of frustration and no working door.
Great video, it guided me to disassemble and reassemble a broken door handle (cable rusted inside the handle and snapped). On the other hand, the replacement part isn't stricly identical: under the black plastic covering the cable, there is a metal covering (rather than transparent plastic). And that covering goes too far, which means there is not enough distance between the cable hook and the white guide actuating the actuator (and then the door will stay locked after using the central lock, both from inside and outside). I'm afraid to cut the metal covering because I might damage the cable. Any tip to fix that?

Thanks for this good video. When doing the second bolt, should the bolt stay in place when turning it anti-clock wise? In the video the handle moves nice and smoothy, but I could not make it happen. The bolt just keep coming out and the handle does not move at all.
Problem soved, the handle was just stuck after 16 years 🙂 One controlled hit to the bolt and the handle started moving. Thanks again this helpful video!

Great stuff and now the door handle is off and the cylinder is swapped out. Problem I'm having is getting the barbed end back into place of the new cylinder mechanism. Any tips and tricks?
It can be quite fiddly. We recommend leaving the door lock loose (with the screws completely removed), to allow movement and then you can line them both up easier.
