As Good as it Gets, Grand Prix Legends in 2021

  • This is Grand Prix Legends, as good as it gets in 2021. This sim from 1998 has been painstakingly modded and improved over the years by its community and hardly resembles its stock self. Stunning recreated circuits and more accurate car/physics models immerse you in what racing would have been like in the 1960s. Other sims have come a long way, but there is something special about GPL which brings me back year after year. As a complete package, nothing can compete with GPL, and its only getting better and better...

    This was beautiful. I'm not sure what's more impressive: that Papyrus was able to create this sim 23 years ago or how far the modding community has been able to push it.

    • @azynkron
      @azynkron 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      However you look at it, it means that Papyrus did something right and made it easy for modders to update it far beyond it's lifecycle. There are other games that I tried and even if they are "updated" the problems are way to big for it to be enjoyable.
      Another game that leaps to mind is STALKER. Although not as heavily modded graphicly as this one, there are complete conversions that practically turns it into a new game and it's still a joy to play.

    Notice how Rindt started from behind Jake and overtook him, then Gurney a lap after, and then McLaren the lap after that. Why? Because on race day he had a better race pace than he managed on qualifying. This unpredictable and dynamic behaviour is unique to GPL, compared to modern sims where AI always performs the same, race to race, session to session.

    • @gp75motorsports
      @gp75motorsports 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      NASCAR Racing 2003 Season does that as well. Sometimes an AI will qualify well and then fall down the order in the actual race, sometimes vice versa, and sometimes their qualifying pace will be on par with their race pace. More games need to do this

    I remember when that sim came out. I had a Logitech Wingman Formula Force wheel/pedal set. With a gear driven wheel and non load-cell pedals that sim was undriveable. I assume that nowadays with a modern rig (i.e. DD + load-cell pedals), it must be a bit more manageable. Nonetheless, this sim caters to a small percentage of the sim racing community because it is so hard to keep the cars on the track. Based on what i just saw on this video, I would venture to say that you are a talented driver; well done.

    I think a modern game along these lines would work very well. Instead of rendering everything in full 3d, use sprites wherever possible to reduce compute time and then focus more on physics and AI processing and increasing framerate, work on sound design, and really nail the immersion. Retro shooters have really made a comeback, aping the stylings of original Doom and Quake with low res textures, low poly models, and frantic pace of gameplay. I really believe that the same could be done and really see a revitalization of the sim racing genre outside of the current usual suspects. Flag-waving about best looking cars and fully rendered engines and suspension animation is great but, why do it at the sacrifice of good AI and driving mechanics?

    When I got bored of Gran Turismo and Windows XP came out this game is why I purchased my first PC. It was notoriously hard, undriveable some reviewers said. I started with an analogue pad, similar to the Playstation's and after a year of practice stepped foot online using VROC. What an experience and this was on dial-up, real gentleman racing, where everyone respected the rules and their fellow racers. I remember the first time a wrecker slammed it into reverse on the grid and trashed half of the racers before the race started, it was a complete shock. I recently got my first wheel due to my daughter moving out and a bedroom becoming a playroom. I now run mostly Assetto Corsa but my original GPL is still there, it is now in full screen and the force feedback is way better than I could of imagined. Love this channel, recently got the GTC mod and Auto Union after your recommendation. Keep up the good work, onwards and upwards!

    You made that Cooper look better than it had any right to be on a high-speed circuit like Spa, amazing job. The Cooper is probably my favourite car to drive in GPL, probably because of its forgiving handling that won't punish my sloppy driving too much.

    Your videos inspired me to pick this up again. I’m using an Xbox controller and although a little easier than keyboard, it’s still a nightmare but great fun. I feel a real sense of reward when I’m able to complete a clean lap!

    I bought GPL when it first came out and loved watching this but one of the things I remember about GPL is that you could have a huge battle to overtake someone but once you actually get past them, they sit relatively close behind you and never really challenge to take the place back. That seems to be the case with the 14 car here. Your battle to get past him was epic but then he just never tried to get back. The same happened with the next two overtakes (Rindt and Hill?) although the battle wasn't quite so epic.
    I wish I knew where my original install set was, would love to give this a try again, it looks so good now it's been updated.

      just be careful, if you’re going to do a long race keep them under 9,500 to not blow the engine

    Hypnotic... dangerous.. you can feel the speed and smell the danger in each section. Imagine the pilots of those eras... huge balls of steel. Thats why cars dont needed aerodynamics back then... the weight of those balls made the car stick to the tarmac.
    I always say that those cars looks like cigars (read it with arnold voice for more immersion) the flying stuggies.

    Remember playing this game as a kid when it first came out and it absolutely blew me away. There were car physics! It was hard! I quickly began to appreciate the limits of the tire grip, the motion of the suspension and chassis while steering, accelerating, and braking. Mind bending stuff for a kid who was playing Super Mario Kart a few years earlier.

    It’s amazing how back then you had no information the whole race. You’ve got the rev counter and couple of pressure and temp gauges on the dashboard, and the pit board updates you on the lap number and who is ahead of you, but that’s it. Even if they did have radios, at huge tracks like Spa and the Nurburgring, the signal wouldn’t reach all the way around the track.

    I have a great (I think) idea for a video series:
    Take Kunos' default 250F and run a championship against Simdream's 1958 grid on the various great historic tracks available for AC, roleplaying as a privateer driver in 1958.

    Awesome! I bought it in 1999 when I was at the high school and I used to play it for years on my Pentium II. But I had only a joystick at that time (the same I used for flight simulators), not a proper steering wheel.. its realism is still impressive today and it was incredibly advanced back in the days when it was released - some of my friends gave up trying after just a couple of turns :)

    500th like ;-) I still remember when I bought my first PC in 1998, thinking how nice it would be to have a F1 GP PCgame with older cars..and it to my joy, it was released shortly after. Enjoyed it back then, did only a few upgrades (available at the time) and never was that good to keep at it & lost touch with sim racing after a while. Nice to see the quality upgrades/textures. Very smooth and some nice racing to boot. Great stuff !

    I remember buying this game when it first came out and have only just stumbled on this upgraded content. I didn't realise the game was still going and it looks like there are some very talented enthusiasts that have been beavering away over the past twenty ears or so. This era of F1 motor racing holds the fondest memories for me and I would love to re-enter the world of GPL but wouldn't have the first idea where to start re downloadable content. This season in particular is very relevant to me now as I currently work at a car collection that houses two cars from this very era, a BRM H16 (driven at the time by either Graham Hill or Jackie Stewart) and Jim Clarks Lotus 33, 2.0 litre powered R14 (which was used in conjunction with an H16 powered Lotus 43 during this period of turmoil when the formula rules changed from 1.5 litre to 3.0 litre catching most teams on the hop re-engine re-design). I shall now go surfing for more content to watch.
