Hey Jake, I made my first lap on the Nordschleife in 1976 with a 50cc/6,25HP motorbike, called "Hercules". Since I added a few more laps. By the time I reached about 2000 Kilometers on it (nearly 100 laps) and it stays to be my favorite racetrack. My best lap was on a Yamaha RD 350 LC, in about 10 Minutes. Been there for national holidays like "Pfingsten and Ostern" with many friends, a campfire, a lot of alcohol and a lot of fun. you can't imagine how good these times were. Now, in August I celebrate my 65th Birthday, I ḿ eager to restaurate my Yamaha RD 350 YPVS, which may take a year or so, but I definitively race a last lap on that course. 😎
I adore long tracks. Bullrings have their appeal, but a long track feels more like an adventure. A dash through the countryside - like parkour for cars. The longer the better, for me. It's why I'm so drawn to the Targa Florio, why I fell in love with Gran Turismo's Sierra Time Rally, and why I'm so grateful the Nordschleife still exists.
Me too, I feel like a hamster on a regular length track. Altho' Ams2 isn't my favourite sim, it looks good and is great fun. I prefer hot lapping, that's where my passion really lies but racing the AI in Ams2 can be so immersive, great looking tracks and great weather models, really is something. I can see myself getting into this historic version, altho' racing on the Nordscheife I find terrifying 🤣 but perhaps in the BMW 2002, that maybe less stressful. I like the historical Belgium circuit and of course the legendary TT
I am old enough to remember tracks from the late 70’s on TV and one of the biggest joys is immersing myself in the tracks and cars of that era. This AMS2 build is breathtaking. Some of the bumps are a bit fear inducing but getting an opportunity to turn a lap around a track that has change so much over the years but still requires maximum attention is wonderful. Keep up the excellent videos!
I was in Europe a few years ago, and decided to rent a car for 2 laps around there. A proper caged race car, but not super fast. Best money I have spent in years. Just enjoyed the laps. I have been lucky. I have raced sprint cars around the likes of Eldora, Knoxville and Husets. I've driven a formula ford around Watkins Glen and Barber SAAB around Lime Rock. Those two laps at the Nordschleife, are among my favorite memories at speed.
Great video, thank you very much! You had a great look into the history, and thank you for remembering Gerhard Mitter, who tragically died in 1969. Your inclusion of the historic background made it more apparent how much Reiza cared when they made this track, and how much love and attention to detail went into it.
When a build of the historic Ring comes out I always look for the tree on the run up to Karussell. In a number of books of the time drivers had said they used this tree as a marker. If you line up with it directly ahead you'll drop straight into the banking with no issue. Good to see the tree is there as it should be!
Jackie Stewart mentioned that tree as a reference point for the Karussell for a promotional film back in the day. And I'm pretty sure it's no way related to the slightly more famous Rebel Tree...
Fantastic video as always. The track is stunning in VR, sits right up there as one of the most immersive tracks there is. I've turned 100's of laps on the modern version, so this is immediately familiar yet so completely alien all at the same time. You can really appreciate the huge elevation changes and I love the feeling of scale, the hidden glimpses through the trees, the rounding of a blind corner and suddenly being able to see far off to the distance, seeing a tiny ribbon of tarmac snaking off into the hillside. I've mainly been using the Formula Vintage Gen. 2, because I love those cars, but must give the Retro Gen 1 a go sometime soon.
I've been turning laps in the BT44, I can definitely recommend giving the F retro gen 1 a go. Need to find another 5 seconds to get under that magical 7 minute mark.
1971 war die Nordschleife noch zuschauerfreundlich. Eine wunderbare und fast authentische Animation. Die Haupt- und Nebenposten fehlen. Dazu auch die Betontribüne in der Südkehre. Auch stehen teilweise Zuschauer dort, wo nie welche standen. Aber unterm Strich wirklich gut!
I drove this track in July of 1970. There was no construction going on anywhere and it didn't appear they were getting ready to do construction either and the track didn't look freshly paved. Glad I missed all that and got to drive the original road.....both north and south circuits. 9:56...@ Metzgesfeld is where my father went straight as he had no idea the road turned left. In a sedan it was a trip in a field and a short trip back on the track. This '71 set up would've totaled our car. Great memories brought back here. Thank you
7:02 i love how reiza make also some access road drivable... i had a lot of fun searching and driving on them. after the cleveland "easteregg" going around nordshleife in an hotel or in the fields was amazing
Very entertaining video, GPLaps. In fact............... when I saw the Thumbnail & noticed the length of the video. I especially went and made a fresh cup of coffee and got a couple of Aussie Tim-Tams - and watched it from start to finish. ; )))
A cordial Thanks... Ein herzliches Dankeschön... for showing your audience, how much love and passion you have for historic racing. We love it, wenn you tell us the names of some areas on the Nordschleife. For me it is a pleasure so see, how you bring historic themes to your community. Once more Dankeschön for what you doing, and greetings from Europe.
Everything about this: the dynamics, the environment, the cars, your driving style as well as the AI’s are all pretty damn close to how it would have been at the time. Well done!!!
Wow, Jake, that was an impressive introduction to the '71 Nürburgring. As a German car and motorsport enthusiast, I've seen a lot of documentaries and historical races on this iconic track but your introduction gave me goosebumps! I think you love this track too, at least that's how it sounded. Now I'm looking forward to the race, and I'm very excited. Thanks for this video. Greetings from Germany, Florian.
If you did a full race here with these exact same cars , same conditions ..... i would be GLUED to the entire race !! This is THE MOST IMPRESIIVE sim race track EVER - JUST INCREDIBLE !!! I would love to watch you drive the fantastic course in a complete race !!!
DOC P3 motion platform and BE headset makes this track pretty mindblowing. Feeling every roll a dip in the track makes it about as close to total immersion as possible.
Thanks, for this very entertaining and informative video! About fifty years ago I made my first lap on the Nordschleife, as a young boy in the back seat of my father's car. On the way home from summer vacation, my dad treated us to a 'real racing experience'. Touristenfahrten were then a completely different experience than they are now. Believe it or not, but then you could just make a lap with the whole family in a Renault 4 with the Alpenkreuzer still attached!
I'm starting to wonder if Reiza would be best off focusing on creating a purely historic racing sim. There's definitely a market for it, and it never dates. You don't end up with endless complaints about the cars and tracks not being updated to the latest spec lol.
Yes another great video I have a very good book on the History of GP cars that has been long out of print. It contains most of the track maps for practically ever Track from the very start of Auto racing so most of the legendry Street GP courses. Including the original Nordschleife . I am sure there is a market for historical content in simracing. Just like you find in Flightsim 2020. But I also on a recent trip home to the UK I really lucked in when in an Antiques shop I found a copy of Rudolf Caracciola auto biography and two other period driver books from the 20's through to the 50's .but his description of racing and winning at Avus or the Nordscheife or the Tripoli races are just incredible plus his sadness dealing with the amounts of deaths at most races during that period or serious injury. These people were harder for sure but it took it toll of them mentally and physically. But thanks to games like this we can get an idea of what it must have been like and without the risk to life that they faced. I now live and work in Germany so frundliche grüß von Hamburg .
This was a superb presentation, from the history of this magnificent track to the commentary during the race, you truly added to the value of what Reiza has brought us. Kudos to them for nailing it in the head by taking historic tracks and cars this seriously. Reiza, if you are listening, what you have done to bringing us historic content is highly appreciated. It gives us a chance to step back in history and get a taste of what it must've been like to risk your life for glory. You guys are making Automobilista the best series in my book. Like Jake said, more historic content will only make us more content (no pun intended) and will only expand your client base. This is truly a gift.
I have been playing the modern version of the Nordschleife in both AC/ACC/BeamNG for while, and the most shocking thing for me about this version is the openness of the track, just the lack of trees around the beginning area and how further the trees are to the track. It really puts a new perspective on the Nordschleife, though ironically it being a older version of the track. Also Great Commentary, as usual!
I haven’t tried this with VR yet, but one of my favorite simracing moments was VR in Project Cars 2 at Le Mans when I was driving a GT40 MkIV at night and seeing another GT40 catching up in my mirror.
Fantastic representation of the Ring. Judging by that race, it looks like Pescarolo really was rambunctious trying to get every ounce of power out of that BRM. If the other tracks from the 1971 season are due to be included, I predict further ongoing adventures of Richie Axelson. You're already halfway there with the colour scheme of the Surtees.
Another great video! Always enjoy watching fully from start to finish. A suggestion for another video would be the BMW M1 Procars at the Sudschleife. Great driving cars on the south loop are amazing fun!
This is the course that got me into sim racing. I knew it only by reputation, but being able to actually drive it was the only reason I needed to buy a PlayStation
What a way to have a cup of coffee and enjoy the new track. I have not yet been able to experience the drive myself yet. This video has just compounded my anticipation in doing so! For I know just like you once I get on it I won't want to get off. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to ride along.
Inside and outside of sim racing I believe the draw to big tracks (The Ring, Pike's Peak, Isle of Man, Targa Florio, Circuit de la Sarthe, etc) for myself and others is that each lap or running was so long that once you made one it feels like a great accomplishment. And there is more variety be it changing of scenery or race dynamics since the pack gets to spread to the point where you can be fighting thru traffic for a bit and then find yourself alone for a bit. And racing with nothing but the wilds on either side and minimal infrastructure to be seen can be incredibly exciting and relaxing at the same time.
These cars are beyond beautiful... Short and bulky, massive wheels , unlimited engine power, no electronics and only driving skills, and most of all no safety for the driver, amazing ! Damn I love the experimental 70's and the insane 80's
Your videos are always awesome, but as a German, I really love how you pronounce things. You got the phonetics down really well. And then that hint of an accent, to tie it together charmingly. ✌️
I ve gained faith in reiza as soon as they ve announced old spa during the early access, every sim got his strong point, AMS2 is it's historic content and it delivers ! not dissapointed one bit.
I've been enjoying the old Nordschleife flat out since they released it. I have the fastest first sector in the world in Formula Vintage Gen 2 by a whole second but can't get the rest of the lap together.
More 1971 grand prix venues would be awesome, but so would homes of non-championship races like Brands Hatch or Ontario Motor Speedway, perhaps with the release of the latter coinciding with the release of a generic early '70s F5000 car (as well as future releases of a '70s American stock car and a '70s USAC champ car) to facilitate Questor Grand Prix tributes?
Id love to see both the sudschliefe and the full course! Also, I know that assetto DOES have a working Thunderhead and Mach 5/Mach 6 mod, if you're interested in something silly or fun, can take classic cars on a ridiculous track, or fantasy cars against the can am cars of the past and have fun in a video some day.
I'm gonna say what everyone is thinking!.... we're all hanging on another HRRC this summer. We all know how much work the last one took.... but we all loved it soooooooo much!!! Summer is coming in the north.... just sayin'
as Jimmy Stuart said every time he went to the ring he never really knew if he'd be coming back. It's not the spots that look you you could punt off the track where you'll go flying.. it's the spots where you think your safe!
AMS2’s 1991 F1 cars are slightly scary around here… just for a laugh I was driving as Mansell with the amazing skin mod from RD this morning around the Gesamtstrecke, omg so much fun albeit a bit bonkers! Something I love about sim racing is the ability to do things that would never be possible in real life, experiencing modern cars on old circuits or vica versa 😂
I would wish to race on a pre 1967 version of the Nürburgring Gesamtstrecke. So the old Brünnchen, the old Hohenrain section, Schwalbenschwanz, Quiddelbacher Höhe with the jump before Flugplatz.
The only thing left to ponder is why they left out the short version - Start/Finish connected directly by Spitzkehre and Betonkehre. Could make for some nice, simple racing in weak, slow cars.
Hi there. Do you usually answer comments? This is gorgeous, in lack of a better word. Ok, I'm 57 and this video brings back old childhood memories, watching black white tv F1 broadcasting here in Portugal. This is, as far as I know, the best rendition of those glorious times. I love your spoken introduction and comments who are probably intended for younger and American audiences, less familiar with European vintage racing, but I've learned so much with your videos too. I don't have a PC powerful enough to run this beautiful games, but I don't care as long as you do more of this. Could please show us the Zeltweg track in Austria? And how about the REAL 24H Spa Francorchamps for touring cars? Thanks in advance.
Im glad you enjoyed and appreciate the rendition of these circuits! I wish Zeltweg were in any of the newer sims but it only exists in GPL as far as I know. Maybe ill have to make a trip over there at some point!

It won't be your last lap just you next lap of many.
So how's that project going a year later 😁
I adore long tracks. Bullrings have their appeal, but a long track feels more like an adventure. A dash through the countryside - like parkour for cars. The longer the better, for me. It's why I'm so drawn to the Targa Florio, why I fell in love with Gran Turismo's Sierra Time Rally, and why I'm so grateful the Nordschleife still exists.
Targa Florio is the only track that makes me dizzy. It has a lot of Left,Right Left,Right Left, alright Left,Right Left,Right
Me too, I feel like a hamster on a regular length track. Altho' Ams2 isn't my favourite sim, it looks good and is great fun. I prefer hot lapping, that's where my passion really lies but racing the AI in Ams2 can be so immersive, great looking tracks and great weather models, really is something. Me too, that's why I love old spa too. Those long sweeping turns in those squirrely little late 60s F1 cars is truly thrilling.
I am old enough to remember tracks from the late 70’s on TV and one of the biggest joys is immersing myself in the tracks and cars of that era. This AMS2 build is breathtaking. Dein content verdient ein Oscar . Ein wahres Meisterwerk 😊
einEN Oscar
I have been spending a lot of hours on the pre release nordschleife racing against AI. This track is so nostalgic
Great video, thank you very much!
You had a great look into the history, and thank you for remembering Gerhard Mitter, who tragically died in 1969.
Your inclusion of the historic background made it more apparent how much Reiza cared when they made this track,
and how much love and attention to detail went into it.
so we remember al the great racing-drivers who lost his live by doing their passion or job. Thanks to Jakob

gn bro
That ending man! It's nice to see that even a digital version of the ring has its diabolic character
Fantastic video as always. The track is stunning in VR, sits right up there as one of the most immersive tracks there is. I've turned 100's of laps on the modern version, so this is immediately familiar yet so completely alien all at the same time.

Oh man, seeing that car stopped on the Döttinger-Höhe was terrifying! Good on the marshals for getting the driver and car to safety in time!
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this one
This one was amazing i gotta agree
I just bought it today for the historical Nürburgring and Spa. Cant wait to give it a try.
I already know the old spa from project cars and loved it.

Great Video Jake! Im not a huge Vintage racing fan but ive loved my time lapping the ring, gave me a reason to come back to AMS2
Jacob, not get your vintage on! I would follow you around a lap or 2. Your channel is coming right along.
A cordial Thanks... Ein herzliches Dankeschön... for showing your audience, how much love and passion you have for historic racing. I knew the official release would mean a new GPLaps video. Let's go!
Love the vid, I always end up learning things and being entertained while I do!
Incredible video and this version captures the track so well.
This is an excellent presentation. I can tell you love this stuff. Me too. Well done. Edit: This is the best video you've done yet, Very cool.
I love these videos, so much hard work goes into something with this quality! Love it :-) Cheers Gplaps
DOC P3 motion platform and BE headset makes this track pretty mindblowing. Feeling every roll a dip in the track makes it about as close to total immersion as possible.
Thanks, for this very entertaining and informative video!

More of a silent viewer, but I just wanna say your content is pure quality, awesome job man. Keep it up. Love from Germany.
Cant wait to drive this, I wrote my College Thesis on the origins of the Nordschleife as an Economic project.
Really enjoyable. Let's see the Sudschleife now!
I love these videos, the guy just makes you want to watch a race for 10th position, as if it was for the win.
I have an Exoto 1:18 scale model of Stewart's 1971 car. It is exquisite.
I'm starting to wonder if Reiza would be best off focusing on creating a purely historic racing sim. There's definitely a market for it, and it never dates. You don't end up with endless complaints about the cars and tracks not being updated to the latest spec lol.
Another GPL?
Or even better, a pre WWII era sim?
Yes another great video I have a very good book on the History of GP cars that has been long out of print.
That was awesome. I loved the Matchbox livery. Excellent stuff. Thanks for the content.
Oh man, so close…awesome race, great to watch!
1970’s Nürburgring was definitely interesting, to say the least. So many changes, but still with so much danger.
I spent most of my day yesterday on the racecraft G40 practise server doing that 3 clean lap challenge, a truly breathtaking experience.
And that with VR glasses soooo cool!!! 🙃🥸 greetings from cologne Germany
I haven’t tried this with VR yet, but one of my favorite simracing moments was VR in Project Cars 2 at Le Mans when I was driving a GT40 MkIV at night and seeing another GT40 catching up in my mirror.
That was awesome. Thanks for the video.
Ive been off my computer for a few months. Iracing hangover I suspect. Then I watch one of your videos and I get the bug again. Thanks!
Nice work. A pleasure to watch. Thankyou M8.
Love the overflies. Kudos to the track designers on any sim but the detail on this one. Just stunning. May use free camera mode later on!
Well done, as usual.
I've been getting thrown from the sudschleife a lot today, but I'll get it figured out.
🤕
Thank you for this amazing video. The calming voiceover suits your video perfectly.
Love the motorsport history and the drive thanks as always !
Another great video!
Always enjoy watching fully from start to finish.
A suggestion for another video would be the BMW M1 Procars at the Sudschleife.
Great driving cars on the south loop are amazing fun!
Pure gold. Thank you.
"For anyone who knows the nordschilfe this should look very familiar"

This is GLORIOUS.
Jake is the Mark Felton for motorsport.👍keep it up.
Reiza is now legend as the Green Hell is itself.
Interesting history and enjoyable to watch gameplay; solid work!
Dude ur vids w the commentary is the best thx
Great as always
These cars are beyond beautiful...
Short and bulky, massive wheels , unlimited engine power, no electronics and only driving skills, and most of all no safety for the driver, amazing !
Damn I love the experimental 70's and the insane 80's
Awesome!!!! If you were in VR it blow your mind!
Your videos are always awesome, but as a German, I really love how you pronounce things. You got the phonetics down really well. And then that hint of an accent, to tie it together charmingly. ✌️
Now AMS2 needs more cars from that era. Maybe some Prototypes? Hell yeah!
I don’t know what I’d want more. Early 70s prototypes with the 917k and 512m or late 70s Group 6 and Group 5
@@Logan912 If i had my choice it would be Gr4, Gr5 and Gr6.
I ve gained faith in reiza as soon as they ve announced old spa during the early access, every sim got his strong point, AMS2 is it's historic content and it delivers ! not dissapointed one bit.
And then all Green Hell Breaks Loose as 1971 Nordschleife video has been posted on this channel.
Great video, best regards from Germany
I've been enjoying the old Nordschleife flat out since they released it. I have the fastest first sector in the world in Formula Vintage Gen 2 by a whole second but can't get the rest of the lap together.

Nice run.
Those times were great! Nice and real clouds, no chemtrails...🤘
Yay, history lesson time!
Great video! Am really surprised that ur German pronounciation is that good (am German myself)! Keep up the great work! 🙌🏻
I have an unofficial copy but after seeing this i'm sold. Nordschleife is my favorite track sim racing combined with VR. This looks incredible.
they should go for broke and make the 1930s version, this one is just too darned safe
I'm gonna say what everyone is thinking!.... we're all hanging on another HRRC this summer. We all know how much work the last one took.... but we all loved it soooooooo much!!! Summer is coming in the north.... just sayin'
whats HRRC?
@@deadbeef576 check the live streams on this channel from last year, you will encounter some fun races

Fantastic review! 👌🏼♥️
as Jimmy Stuart said every time he went to the ring he never really knew if he'd be coming back.
Something I love about sim racing is the ability to do things that would never be possible in real life, experiencing modern cars on old circuits or vica versa 😂
the AI diving into tiergarten/hohenrain on the first lap like that was unreal
Great film Sir
I would wish to race on a pre 1967 version of the Nürburgring Gesamtstrecke. So the old Brünnchen, the old Hohenrain section, Schwalbenschwanz, Quiddelbacher Höhe with the jump before Flugplatz.
Super! Beste Rennstrecke der Welt!
Peskyrolo approves !
The only thing left to ponder is why they left out the short version - Start/Finish connected directly by Spitzkehre and Betonkehre. Could make for some nice, simple racing in weak, slow cars.
Would be outstanding in 3 D 🥃👍👍👍🥃🇦🇺
INSANE!
@@GPLaps Thanks for your answer.
You just got a nice little nod from the devs in a post they just put up on steam
“Still has [the party atmosphere] to some extent” - you sir, need to attend the N24 😉
A bit of smoke in the Paddock 😅 22:28
I wonder if there is a simulation with a pre 1967 version of the track (without the last chicane and the big jump at Brünchen) ... 🤔
