Remember, AMS2 Spa is NOT the PC2 model spruced up. It is a ground up rebuild using film footage and attention to every bump and dip it was possible to discern from multiple years of available data, photographs, local records, and the memories of those who actually raced it. Reiza missed many self-imposed deadlines for its release, but the final result was well worth the wait. As a general point for AMS2 I would like to see the driver preempting the sustained g-forces in various turns. At the moment they bounce around in reaction to the g-forces and bumps but do not appear to preempt g-forces any driver knows are coming. This would massively add to realism.
You really do put together the most enjoyable sim racing videos out there. Your love for racing really comes through and your historical knowledge is amazing Thanks!!
If I recall correctly Reiza did send their team to laser scan the remaining public roads while they were doing modern Spa. Unfortunately the 70s GTs and tourers don't yet have gearing high enough to race properly :(
I wonder how they determined the landscape of the 1970 layout, same with Spa 1993, the landscape too has changed a lot. Maybe watching hours and hours of footage and looking at pictures
This video is an absolute gem. Thank you. I cannot believe some people who have complained about the accuracy of this version of the track in AMS2. I have no time for them because I am too busy enjoying it in and out of VR. is Both this and Monza 10k without their chicanes racing 60's/70's cars are reason enough for any GPL player to play AMS2 as well as GPL!
Thank you for another great video, btw Reiza anounced releasing 1970 version of Nurburgring until end of the year and 3 other historic tracks in 2023, looking forward fo it.
What I love the most about Spa (the track itself is awesome too - especially in classic guise) is the relation to WWII based on location - you say Malmedy/Stavelot, I hear "Band of Brothers" & Company of Heroes 2. I have driven past it many a time on my way to the Nür and all the signs at the side of the highway are also like riding through the Ardennes Assault DLC missions in CoH2.
I remember when you did the 1965 Belgium GP years ago & I commented back then that was one of the scariest rides I've seen in a video game. Now looking at the 1970 version of Spa it's even more breathtaking & terrifying because of the speed. One mistake on this track it's curtains. But I enjoyed every second of this video because the track & the cars are awesome. I got Automobilista 2 & play some on the Grand Prix tracks in this game. Like the Osterriechring, Silverstone Circuit without the chicane, & Kyalami. Great tracks to race with old & new cars. I hope the game add the old Zandvoort circuit because that be a great track to race.
Got to love 1970s safety chat "OK guys, for safety we added a chicane" "Oh good, so we won't be arriving at Masta at full speed then?" "Nah, don't worry, we put it far enough back so you can reach top speed again by then" As always, a lovely video and really impressive improvements by Reiza on their 70s content - this is next level immersion stuff. With the 70s Nordschleife up next, what a time to be into vintage simming! Just need some slower period cars than F1s to be added now, to expand on the very slim 70s touring and GT categories... come on BMW CSL!
I had to rewatch Frankenheimer's "Grand Prix" again after watching this. You are doing such a splendid job of immersing the viewer into your racing events.
The group C cars on the 1000km layout are absolutely terrifying, especially if you add GT Classics class and Group A cars to get a sort of 'almost correct' GT field, but the 22 grid spots do really let it down Though it might be for the best, the closing rates are bananas and any mistake while lapping is totally an airplane crash
@@Puhdull Yeah but it is so, so jank and requires you to do hacky stuff to get it working every session I'd rather Reiza just up the limit on appropriate tracks officially then have to have a faff with cheatengine every time I want to have a proper grid size
Just wanted to show my appreciation for your channel here. The atmosphere, the knowledge, the soothing voice... it all adds up to a great channel with videos that I look forward to watching as soon as the notification pops up. Thanks for the great content!
Great vid. Recently moved my sim rig to a new PC, and have been picking away at getting everything set up "right" again. This gives me some motivation to get going.
I still remember how it felt through Malmedy in GPL . The 3dfx Voodoo made it playable from a FPS perspective, but the steering wheel was the only way to actually enjoy it. No FF, and about 270 degrees of rotation.
Your videos are so great! The editing, the music, the footage, the information in the voice overs is so high quality that each "race" video you put out is like a big budget production Documentary. It's great to watch you race, and even better to learn new pieces of history each lap.
Cool content; subscribed👍 Spa is just incredible; I go to races here twice a year, as I live just an hour away, in Germany. I’m lucky, in that the Nurburgring is also close to me, so I’m kinda spoilt for choice. I’ve been racing the 74 Porsche 911 RSR 3.0, around Spa 70; just awesome🔥But let’s face it, it was so damn dangerous, back in the day; 300 km/h meters away from trees, houses & telegraph poles, is a no go. Thank god, those days are over.
Holy crap I haven’t been early to one of these before. I will say GP Laps you are a true connoisseur of sim racing. You have helped point my interest back into trying to get good at sim. Thank You!
Reiza have excelled once again, as have you sir with yet another amazing video that is compelling to watch. What a time to be a sim racer, we really are spoilt, thank you for another lovely video, stay safe.
It's wild that only 5 out of 18 cars crossed the finish line without mechanical issues in 1970. I guess that much flat out running really did a number on those vintage engines.
What I love about Spa is how it is connected to the WWII by proxy (corner names) & thus to "Band of Brothers" and CoH2. Driven past it many a time (on my way to the Nür) and all the signs at the side of the highway are all CoH2: Ardennes Assault DLC mission names.
Really looking forward to driving this track. It's a beautiful rendition! Would be amazing if someone who actually drove this circuit did a video playing the sim with some commentary.
Juat remember this is precious history! The wonderful software programmers behind this are true historians for our age. Like we study gladiators in roman ampitheatres, students in generations to come, will ask why did they do this - race and risk their lives? Maybe I am too old but I get far more excited over this than the latest Electronic Arts F1 game. Who cares about Verstappen or Le Clerc. Cars then were beautiful, dangerously unpredictable and exceptionally loud and thunderous beasts. And the brave men who drove them were real men of courage and life, not today's diamond studded man-boys. Please we need more of this.
As you said....I have been away from AMS2 because it is good, buit did not outpace all my vintage favourites in AC. But I definetely will have a closer look again now. Thank you for another great video.
Yes there was a chicane at burnenvile pre WWII. I'm not sure when or how long it lasted. You're probably aware that the original layout went further left after eau rouge into a hairpin and rejoined where the top of raidillon is now. It also went into the village of Stavelot where it turned hairpin right.
very accurate circuit width and layout. this was just a standard country 2 lane road until the very early 2000's. there was very nearly a F1 GP at spa in 72 & 73.
I love the track surface undulation, i guess in the absence of laser scanning. it would be possible to replicate some of the track undulation characteristics by referencing original on-board camera film footage, frame by frame :) ( Bathurst Australia)
Love the video and just wanted to ask you one thing: Could you please share your AMS2 head movement settings? You seem to be using Legacy Head Movement with a bit of Head Movement on top. Curious what your exact settings are, as I have been in a couple of discussions on this subject myself. Thanks in advance for sharing!

Great view of my time. Was in Europe the summer of 1970 but did not go here. I wasn't in control of where we went. Just what I was doing last night 👍 Did find the AI (100%) prone to crashing unfortunately. But when they made the first lap clean some of the slip streaming duels you got into were crazy. When they wanted to make it two wide through the masta kink I backed off 😯
Matra 670B...So a slightly lighter car than the 917 with quite a bit less power. Which in my book makes it a bit more impressive, because it means he had to drive with the throttle buried in the front bulkhead to keep the average speed up.
Every thing is so accurately told and perfectly edited! Story telling as never realized before on sims. I started enjoying AMS2 just few weeks ago and got Spa Dlc...amazing! Just one question: how can I move the cam around the track? I tried to do that without getting it.
I really hope more of the newer sims start to include "classic" tracks, like the full Monza course with oval, Circuit de la Sarthe circa '69 with no chicanes. The full Hockenheim ring.
I've been asking for more AI slots at any track that doesn't allow for at least 31 opponents for over a year now. Historic Spielberg is another one that only allows 19 opponents and it really limits the potential of that track and really any custom championship you want to create because it will limit the championship opponents to the lowest allowed at any track. 22 slots for historic Spa feels just as much of a let down. I really hope Reiza look at expanding even beyond 31 opponents as tracks like the Nurburgring, Spa, Daytona, and others would feel so much more alive if we could get 40, 50, 60+ opponents on it.
I love all of you. Your comments, your driving skill, my favorite era cars you are driving, my favorite track ever. You are so interesting to watch, you are an excellent driver. Very good job sir. I also loved GPL, Pcars 1 and 2 but AMS2 is my favorite's one now. Does your AI are at 100% skill ? I can't get better than 90% myself to be able to compete with them.
I wonder if they intend on giving us a pre-war verison of spa because I noticed you can drive around the area of the old Customs house at the bottom of eau rouge.
You can get a version of the track with the original Au Rouge turn to the left and the detour into Stavalo village for Assetto Corsa. It's called "Spa Faux Pre War". Not sure where to find it though?

I do enjoy some AMS2 but I spend all of my time driving in practice sessions just hotlapping with a full grid of cars. The actual racing is just not very good.
I suspect the small grid count might be an AI limitation for now, sadly. It's already quite rare for a full 22 car grid to make it through Eau Rouge without incident. Cant imagine 32. Otherwise, this track is awesome though. Already planning to do a full Vintage Gen2 F1 season.
@RGM: that’s my feeling too. During the RC, this class & the classic Porsche/Corvette was a wreck fest through Eau Rouge. That seems to have improved though, with general release; although the AI are still dodgy. But a grid of 26 cars would be a big improvement, if Reiza continues to work on the AI
I wanted to try GTL. I have TS-XW Racer, TLC-M and generic aliexpress h-shifter, 3 devices, GTL recognizes them but captures input only from 3 of them. What can I do? I can't find any help online
I think they used the Malmedy Chicane for the 1974-75 1000-km races. I think initially there may well have been a "chicane" at Malmedy because the slip oad to bypass that intersection hadn't been built yet. I can't totally rule out that they ran the chicane in the mid '30s to slow the German cars. But I also think they may well not have used it for the Sportscars back then. It is kind of a mess trying to figure out exactly which layout was used in which years prior to WWII. It's also not entirely clear just what was changed going from 1956 to '57.
I really really want a AAA action story driven racing game based on historical GP racing. From the very start up to the 90s! I want it to be really visceral and atmospheric, with engines throwing oil all over you! Crowds or fans everywhere and with really engine soumds!! I really dont want much... Do i?
rF2's version does tighten up a bit exiting Stavelot. Here is a CMS Racing event using the 71 sport car mod. I ran #35 Alfa. Rolling start is at 2.39.10. : th-cam.com/video/W0HF4yLauNA/w-d-xo.html

In 1975, the last 1000km race. They installed a chicane at Masta before the entry on the right. They removed it because it was dangerous.!!!!!
Yes, I've seen that noted on one of the track database sites.
Enthralling as always.
I really really want a AAA action story driven racing game based on historical GP racing. From the very start up to the 90s! I want it to be really visceral and atmospheric, with engines throwing oil all over you! Crowds or fans everywhere and with really engine soumds!! I really dont want much... Do i?
Or a game based entirely on the Le man racing in the 60s. Story driven again. God I can only hope.
rF2's version does tighten up a bit exiting Stavelot.
Here is a CMS Racing event using the 71 sport car mod. I ran #35 Alfa. Rolling start is at 2.39.10. : th-cam.com/video/W0HF4yLauNA/w-d-xo.html
