I like to think that the Lightyear movie we saw in cinema was a REMAKE of the original 1995 movie that Andy saw, not the actual movie itself, which would explain why everything looks so crisp, and why there are a lot of modern-style jokes.
All they needed to do, was not try to connect it to toy story at all. Keep it non-cannon. Just say we made a movie loosely based on the character in toy story. Other than that, it has no relation whatsoever.
That they even did that placard was a mistake. It would fool the kids who weren't around in 1995, but it doesn't fool any of the adults who remember movies from 30 years ago.

Spoilers! You know what they should’ve done with Zurg, should’ve dropped the whole future buzz thing and keep him a gigantic evil emperor Robot that has found the planet and heard of Buzz going through time jumping years into the future. He seeks out buzz’s ship but since buzz is gone he attacked the civilization to figure out what crystal they’re using. Eventually Buzz comes back Zurg now is focused on stealing the crystal to jump through time to wherever he pleases becoming eternally powerful.

It was pretty clear they just tacked on the claim that it was the same movie Andy saw as a marketing ploy, they definitely did not plan this film that way, and I think it ultimately hurts the film since it clearly doesn't fit the claim. It was probably some daft-headed executive who told them to claim it despite how it doesn't fit the style of the film or anything. The film itself would have been fine without claiming it had to do with the actual Toy Story canon. The stuff with Zurg proves it especially.
Since buzz clearly remained popular throughout decades in the toy story timeline (a buzz lightyear happy meal toy in the 2010s like 20 years after he was made is just funny if not for any type of remake), I would've liked the idea that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was the original Buzz series, and that this movie was a reboot just like it is in reality.
That's been my theory since they announced this movie, I think Pixar planned it that way and maybe could have a scene with older Andy going to watch this reboot, maybe with a son. My theory is that Pixar changed it with those stupid intro titles because people did not understand the concept of the movie, with some of them even thinking that the toy was inspired by a real in-universe astronaut. In my head-canon, the toy was the first thing to be created (it really screams toy in design, with karate chop action, lights and sounds) then they created the animated series to promote the toy (like Transformers or G.I. Joe in the 80's) and finaly they created this live action adaptation with a more serious tone (also like Transformers and G.I. Joe)

(By the same producers that would go on to make Kim possible) though it was said in an interview that (retroactively) star command was the spin off cartoon of lightyear that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy
"Star Command" was far better at telling a similar story, in my opinion. In spite of its many flaws, I still think of it fondly from my childhood, while I wouldn't be surprised if "Lightyear" is almost forgotten.
I’m still amazed that Sox forgot the formula for the fuel that he created 5 minutes he made it, and he is a robot. And also I’m amazed that I’m the future they didn’t have the formula for the fuel or other useful stuff to let sox replicate it. It’s really weird if you think about it.
I think a great post credit scene would have been adult Andy and his kid in the theater, and Andy being all "This isn't like the original at all!" While his kid is all like "OMG, that was so cool with the laser sword and the..." as the kid goes off reenacting action scenes, making Andy realize this isn't a loss for his memory of the movie, but a new memory for his own kid.
going into watching it I assumed there would be some reference to andy actually watching the movie, it would've helped to ground it in reality. The text at the beginning helps do that but feels a bit less intentional
It really depends on the director. Coco, Soul, and Luca are some pretty solid films while Turning Red was OK while Lightyear was meh/borderline disaster.
This movie feels more like the soulless reboot of the 2D Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie that Andy would take his kid to see, and hope to rekindle a childish whimsy from inside him, then feel utterly disappointed by as it lost the magic and aesthetic that made Buzz Lightyear so appealing to him growing up. The bright colors and 1950s inspired atomic age/Flash Gordon aesthetic of the cartoon world replaced with dull color palettes and environments.

You are absolutely correct, when I saw this scene in theaters I was blown away that they would allow something like this to be in a children movie. Shame on Pixar and Disney, whoever authorized that to be put in this movie, not everybody is accepting of that. Put something like that out of children’s movies and keep it clean, I thought Disney was better than that and Pixar!!!

Spoiler theory So we see in the film that the future buzz just takes the zurg ship, and all the robots just call him zurg just because, BUT what if he isn't the actual zurg, and the real emperor zurg just got one of his ships stolen by future buzz so in some type of sequel where the real zurg trys to find and kill buzz, it would kinda fix the villain problem
SPOILERS: So, I just thought of two pretty major plot holes. (sorry if it is kind of scatterbrained) 1.) Zurg's (Future Buzz's) whole motivation in the movie is that he needs to get past Buzz's fuel crystal to power his time travel machine so he can go farther into the past to fix his mistake. This is supposed to make sense because Zurg's original power crystal ran out of juice. Ok... think for just a second. How did Buzz get the first power crystal in the first place? The answer is that Sox can just create blueprints of how to create power crystals. Granted it takes Sox MANY YEARS to do this but Buzz solved this problem earlier by using time dilation to just go into the future which would give Sox all the time Sox needed to come up with plans to create their own power crystals. The only problem I can think of is that maybe Buzz couldn't make the power crystal without using the technology that was being kept from him within the laser shield. But that is kinda BS given the fact his Zurg ship had superior technology AND Buzz had all the time in the world literally to just wait for an opportunity to steal it if needed. That would be if he hadn't wasted 50 years of his life inventing time travel to the past. 2.)The agents of Star Command just exempt Buzz of his crimes because he saved them from his future self??? Maybe??? (lol that's so stupid) The crimes Buzz committed that warrant his arrest occurred BEFORE Buzz became Zurg. (And Zurg, although shown to be intimidating actually never even does anything bad to Star Command in this movie except resist arrest for OG Buzz's actions.) he does kill future Sox :( but that was it and that was after future Sox attacked him first. ALSO How did future Buzz get the Zurg ship? He just randomly finds it floating through space after he resists arrest from Star Command and shoots himself far into the future. Why did Zurg (someone who still keeps mission logs on him everyday of his life) never think to check when exactly his past self would land on the planet? He would have clearly had this knowledge and would have been able to capture his past self without any problems if he had known this and prepared properly. Personally, the only reason Zurg's plan is implied to be evil is because it's morally questionable to prevent the lives of people from happening by changing the past for your benefit. First off, Zurg changing the past wouldn't even had an affect on the colony members if they went back to the past with him. And btw Zurg tries to kill his past self and doesn't think that will change the future but somehow everything else will? Also I side with Zurg in general. It was for the benefit of the entire space colony to go to their intended destination. Sure the colony made due and adjusted to their new lives stranded but that was because that was all they ever known. One more problem, why did Buzz not have a problem with missing out on being with his best friend Hawthorne during her life at the colony for the sake of the mission but yet as soon as he spends some time with her granddaughter it's suddenly a sin to continue the mission because why? Buzz you already crossed the morally gray line. You became Zurg the minute Hawthorne died.
Future Buzz and current Buzz are from different timelines now that Zurg stopped Buzz from being arrested, so he can kill him with no consequences because they aren't the same person anymore. And the whole finding an abandoned ship with the Zurg suit and everything it's a setup for a sequel to have the real Zurg take everything back, the actual one who built those things, not future Buzz.
@@komi___ Well that could be true but if so then it only further supports the potential fact that Zurg's plan to go back and change the past wouldn't affect the timeline that they're in. (maybe as long as Buzz's friends just go back in time with Zurg) So Zurg wouldn't have done anything wrong with executing his plan to finish the mission.
old sox was _pretty_ damaged. I don't think he can compute the fusion anymore, and superior tech DOES NOT mean he has infinite materials, and old buzz IS waiting for the perfect opportunity to steal it. Buzz was already excused because punishing your already limited amount of scientists for following conduct and making a mistake is kind of a bad idea. Also, most of the drama surrounding buzz's supposed "mistake" were self-perpetuated in his mind. He wasn't actually in any real trouble until he tried to continue to cancelled experiments. Also also, by this point, Zurg was using ARMORED ROBOTS in an attempt to BREAK into a colony and steal something. While his actual goal may not be the most crazy thing in the world, Star Command may not know the full story and just see a crazy purple dude attempting to destroy their home and understand his defeat as a feat worthy of a pardon. 1) He might not even have his original suit anymore 2) Even if he did, it's pretty old so the memory logs might be messed up/deleted (which is believable, since he uses it so much) also killing past buzz doesn't change the future because the future has already diverged. Alternatively, time travel is a fickle thing that nobody actually knows how it works, and they weren't willing to take the risk. also, Zurg is a criminal whether or not his intentions were pure or not no, he meeting her granddaughter 1) Allowed him to understand that nobody cares about his mistake, and that it's ok to let it go and settle down 2) Formed a bond with him, making him unable to let her go (sure, I'll just erase my friend from out of existence) 3) Character development. that's a thing most good movies have
I wasn't a fan of the idea when I first saw the trailer. Now that it's out, most people I know are not recommending it. (Not even taking into consideration the controversies surrounding the film).

Its actually come out that the original pitch of the movie didn't have a lesbian fellow ranger - but instead she would have been Buzz's love interest... who he would get to see age and age and then die as part of his lightspeed time-skips. IMO that would have been infinitely more impactful, and would have spoken so much more to what he sacrifices in doing those tests.
Although, I do appreciate how the movie just normalized a character for being LGBTQ+ (even though it was short), I feel like him coming back and seeing Alisha age and living a life without him while also seeming happy would’ve been more emotionally impactful. It would’ve been like Up mixed with Interstellar. I understand how they wanted to break the cliche Disney is known for for always romantically pairing up the male and female friends but in this case, I would’ve perfectly ok with it. Yes, I liked how they showed that a man and a woman can share a friendship together but that idea would have brought more emotion to the story.

I like to think the film is the prequel to "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command", before alien recruits joined Star Command, before developing the space tech into something we recognise, if there is going to be a sequel, I cannot help but wonder, if Mira Nova, Booster and XR will be in it.
The director of the movie says Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is supposed to be a Saturday morning cartoon version of this film which is what the Buzz and Zurg toys are based on

So we had a theory about that because if you look at Toy Story 2 their are two buzz lightyear, one is chill the other is a space ragnar with the position to complete his mission. Zurg wakes up to find Andy's buzz's thinking it's his buzz, so what I'm trying to say is future buzz isn't zurg but buzz's father is why I say that, in the scene where the Zurg Reveals His identity Buzz has that look of confusion and the look of lost when he said dad. Meaning buzz's father probably was a space ragnar himself and was lost to space, probably his partner betrayed him or he was abandoned by star command giving him the anger and drive to destroy star command for abandoning him. But future buzz's comes in stealing the ship from zurg to complete his mission, that's why when he Chuckles when Buzz calls him father he didn't have the sad look on his face like fuzz did so that means future Buzz knows something
I love the fact that Chris Evans again plays a charcater that gets thrust into the future to save his friends only for said friends die due to time and has to team up with someone related to the said friend.
Wouldn't that be a retcon to the ending of the 3rd movie where the entire message was about things changing and growing up and them moving on with Bonnie? Only for that retconned in the 4th film when Woody leaves all the other Toys & Bonnie with Bo Beep? That would be like a double retcon.

i also liked how the messed with the letter boxing in the Disney plus version, having it go full wide screen for more action moments and then come back when its over thought that was cool. i never got to see it in theaters so idk if it was there too but ye.

... John Ratzenberger has a quick line as one of the recruiters rejecting Joe in Soul. It's in a sea of voices, and his character isn't seen on-screen, so it's very easy to miss.
I really liked this movie. Not top-tier, but it was fun and satisfying. I also really loved Izzy. She's my favorite new Pixar character since Miguel and Hector from Coco. Maybe Forky.
I'm glad they left the real Zurg's existence open. But this was still supposed to be the movie that Andy saw in theaters back in the late 1990s. And the lore just didn't fit enough for them to say that. Also, despite the lesson, the movie really could've done better without the future Buzz plot. I actually have an idea of how the movie could've been while also giving us the Zurg we love. The movie would be the same until Buzz would get back from his final test flight. Buzz would come to discover that Emperor Zurg has destroyed the laser shield and turned the colony into a city called Z-city. (Think Aku from Samurai Jack) and would need Izzy's help to trigger a rebellion. I would also have established a division between the people who wanted to stay on the alien planet and people who wanted leave the alien planet. Zurg would use propaganda and false promises in order to gain the people who wanted to leave as his followers and have former Zap soldiers become an army known as the Z-Guard. I would also keep Zurg being from the future because of Buzz's multiple test flights with the crystal, causing an anomaly in time and space, accidentally bringing Zurg to the past. I would've later revealed that Zurg, voiced by Keith David in my version, is the great grandson of Cal Burnside, the commander who told Buzz the mission was over. It would then be revealed that the division among the people lead to protests, riots and eventually, civil war, which made Burnside obsessed with keeping order, and he believed in doing it through force and after succeeding, his family would later become leaders of a monarchy that wanted to spread their influence throughout the universe until the Galactic Alliance intervened. Before Zurg went to war with the Galactic Alliance, the anomaly Buzz caused would bring Zurg to the past to collaborate with Burnside, who would pretend to be a prisoner of Zurg to keep the people in line and ensure that there was no war by making those who wanted to leave join Zurg, and ensuring that those who want to stay are kept in line. Zurg's master plan would've been to use the lightspeed crystal to power his ultimate weapon of his Mothership that I call the Hyperspeed Cannon, a weapon with the capacity to destroy an entire planet based on the story Buzz told Woody in the original Toy Story. Zurg plans to basically ransom to keep the Galactic Alliance from interfering with his takeover of the universe and plans to test the weapon on the alien planet that Buzz and everyone is stranded on, which is okay with Burnside as he believes that the people are beyond saving due to Buzz triggering a rebellion. Another major difference would by Izzy's backstory. Making it so that she wants revenge against Zurg because she was forcefully drafted into the Z-Guard as a child and when her parents tried to protect them, they were captured. The last time she would see them was when she was being carried by a Z-Guard member, hovering through space to get to his ship to take her away for the draft, leading to her fear of space. I would've had Darby be a former convict of Star Command turned a member of the Z-Guard, but betrayed Zurg after realizing how much of a tyrant he is. As for Mo, he would've been an orphan who was drafted as a kid, but was kicked out of Zurg's forces due to his cowardly and quitter personality. I also would've built up to building the Buzz final suit for the final battle. Finally, the way I would utilize future Buzz is to have him rescue Buzz after being defeated by Zurg in the first round, only to reveal to past Buzz that he was arrested by Burnside after completing his mission for fifty years, but the anomaly past Buzz caused brought Old Buzz to the future and since then he had taken a ship off planet and lived on the alien planet's moon which would be this universes version of the planet Buzz fought Zurg on at the beginning of Toy Story 2. He would teach Buzz not to get so hung up on the past and help the people steer toward their future and help them find their own path, he would also be the one to explain to Buzz that the weakness of the Hyperspeed Cannon is the destruction of the Hyperspeed Crystal itself, leading Buzz to the final battle with Zurg on his Mothership. I would also make it so old Buzz would start to slowly disappear the moment he came contact with past Buzz, as he would theorize that a time traveler cannot exist in the same timeline as a version of himself just to make his meeting with past Buzz more dramatic and sad. I know this idea isn't perfect, but i truly think it would've kept to the lore Toy Story gave us and gave us the Zurg we deserved to see in this movie. It basically would've been Pixar's Star Wars, mainly because it's obvious that Buzz Lightyear lore was inspired by Star Wars. Zurg is basically Pixar's Darth Vader. I also would've made one of the post credit scenes of Andy who is coming out of the theater with his mother and them hinting at Andy's birthday the next year, connecting to the first Toy Story, making this movie a prequel.
The twist villain doesn't work, because evil Buzz undoing his own arrest should cause him to no longer exist, as he was never arrested, thus never became evil.
I do hope it gets a sequel. It was better than people gave it credit for. There's actually a theory that the old Buzz Lightyear stole from the real Zurg. It would explain the bots and the suit that were there. But, I have a feeling that the suit itself is Zurg. It doesn't need a pilot. It is its own pilot. Though, that's probably farfetched.
From what I understand in most reviews I've seen, the movie is bland. Bland story, bland characters, heck, even Buzz is bland! Which might work fine for something like Illumination but for Pixar who is responsible for amazing characters and stories - it simply does not.
Many of the directors who are responsible for some of Pixar's greatest films have either resigned or were fired in the wake of the MeToo movement. Hence why they're experimenting by rotating directors to work on different films at Pixar.
I could see if the film is supposed to be a reboot of the TV series that was released, which I remember watching as a kid, like that chip and dale film that came out recently. Like Andy saw the TV show as a kid and then the show was rebooted for nostalgia. Definitely makes more sense in universe and real life

I also hate how after Sawks figured out the formula for Buzz. So now moving at light years should only take 4 minutes. But yet instead he gets sent 22 years into the future. Not even 4 years. I guess this was done so they can introduce time travel, but in the way they did it, it's like they wanted to have the formula be successful and fail at sending Buzz to and from the planet under 4 minutes. It's like they were trying to have their cake and eat it too.
I guess that's because Buzz actually reached light speed so the time dilation was bigger, but if that's the case, wouldn't have been an infinitely long dilation?
They could have just made the movie based on the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command TV show. I can imagine a fun movie based on the TV show with more color, more visually interesting environments, and better characters. With Sox the cat added in it could have been a smash hit for Pixar.
Out of curiosity, I may check this movie out when it comes to Disney plus, but I seriously do not care about a human Buzz Lightyear spinoff that I already have enough spoilers to know what the end is like.

you forgot to mention that old Buzz conveniently "borrowed" the Zurg technology but as dumb as that is I assumed they'd use that to create a real Zurg character who isn't buzz himself
One way you can look at it is that, yes, we have many movies like Lightyear now. But maybe it was so popular in the Toy Story universe in the 90s because it was ahead of it's time!

I just think if they want us to think this was canonically an 80's/90's sci-fi movie, like the beginning of this movie says, then they should actually try to make it look like one, instead of just _saying_ "this is the movie Andy watched that made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure." I say either frame this as a reboot for Buzz in-universe, or actually stick to the aesthetic of the kind of movie you're pretending this is.
Thought I would just point out that what you said about Jason Headley is untrue - the whole thing of being the 'go-to' for animating Buzz was actually director Angus Maclane. Unlike Maclane, Headley doesn't have a background in animation but screenwriting. Great video though as always!
All the movie would have been solved if they let the turnip on Orbit and send a recon probe so that the hundreds that were frozen wouldn't commit any risk.
I have no issue with no one being angry at Buzz. It’s like the writers were trying to write Buzz as if he was delusional about needing to prove to everyone that he can make things better. When really, he’s just trying to prove it to himself.

I think the movie could've been a lot better if they had better writing. Some of it was just recycle the lines over and over. It was to the point to where I was counting when they would say the same shit. Also the one line that keeps hitting me that I thought was really cringe was "I'm gunna go back and matter again"
Notice how during the zyclops battle while buzz was getting carried to the telepad the zyclops never tried to hurt buzz since later in the movie old buzz is known a zurg to the zyclops

You know what they should’ve done with Zurg, should’ve dropped the whole future buzz thing and keep him a gigantic evil emperor Robot that has found the planet and heard of Buzz going through time jumping years into the future. He seeks out buzz’s ship but since buzz is gone he attacked the civilization to figure out what crystal they’re using. Eventually Buzz comes back Zurg now is focused on stealing the crystal to jump through time to wherever he pleases becoming eternally powerful.

It was pretty clear they just tacked on the claim that it was the same movie Andy saw as a marketing ploy, they definitely did not plan this film that way, and I think it ultimately hurts the film since it clearly doesn't fit the claim. It was probably some daft-headed executive who told them to claim it despite how it doesn't fit the style of the film or anything. The film itself would have been fine without claiming it had to do with the actual Toy Story canon. The stuff with Zurg proves it especially.
Since buzz clearly remained popular throughout decades in the toy story timeline (a buzz lightyear happy meal toy in the 2010s like 20 years after he was made is just funny if not for any type of remake), I would've liked the idea that Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was the original Buzz series, and that this movie was a reboot just like it is in reality.

That's been my theory since they announced this movie, I think Pixar planned it that way and maybe could have a scene with older Andy going to watch this reboot, maybe with a son.
My theory is that Pixar changed it with those stupid intro titles because people did not understand the concept of the movie, with some of them even thinking that the toy was inspired by a real in-universe astronaut.
In my head-canon, the toy was the first thing to be created (it really screams toy in design, with karate chop action, lights and sounds) then they created the animated series to promote the toy (like Transformers or G.I. Joe in the 80's) and finaly they created this live action adaptation with a more serious tone (also like Transformers and G.I. Joe)

(By the same producers that would go on to make Kim possible) though it was said in an interview that (retroactively) star command was the spin off cartoon of lightyear that inspired the Buzz Lightyear toy
"Star Command" was far better at telling a similar story, in my opinion. In spite of its many flaws, I still think of it fondly from my childhood, while I wouldn't be surprised if "Lightyear" is almost forgotten.

I think a great post credit scene would have been adult Andy and his kid in the theater, and Andy being all "This isn't like the original at all!" While his kid is all like "OMG, that was so cool with the laser sword and the..." as the kid goes off reenacting action scenes, making Andy realize this isn't a loss for his memory of the movie, but a new memory for his own kid.
going into watching it I assumed there would be some reference to andy actually watching the movie, it would've helped to ground it in reality. The text at the beginning helps do that but feels a bit less intentional

This movie feels more like the soulless reboot of the 2D Buzz Lightyear of Star Command movie that Andy would take his kid to see, and hope to rekindle a childish whimsy from inside him, then feel utterly disappointed by as it lost the magic and aesthetic that made Buzz Lightyear so appealing to him growing up. The bright colors and 1950s inspired atomic age/Flash Gordon aesthetic of the cartoon world replaced with dull color palettes and environments.

You are absolutely correct, when I saw this scene in theaters I was blown away that they would allow something like this to be in a children movie. So we see in the film that the future buzz just takes the zurg ship, and all the robots just call him zurg just because, BUT what if he isn't the actual zurg, and the real emperor zurg just got one of his ships stolen by future buzz so in some type of sequel where the real zurg trys to find and kill buzz, it would kinda fix the villain problem

So, I just thought of two pretty major plot holes.
(sorry if it is kind of scatterbrained)
1.) Zurg's (Future Buzz's) whole motivation in the movie is that he needs to get past Buzz's fuel crystal to power his time travel machine so he can go farther into the past to fix his mistake. This is supposed to make sense because Zurg's original power crystal ran out of juice. Ok... think for just a second. How did Buzz get the first power crystal in the first place? The answer is that Sox can just create blueprints of how to create power crystals. Granted it takes Sox MANY YEARS to do this but Buzz solved this problem earlier by using time dilation to just go into the future which would give Sox all the time Sox needed to come up with plans to create their own power crystals. The only problem I can think of is that maybe Buzz couldn't make the power crystal without using the technology that was being kept from him within the laser shield. But that is kinda BS given the fact his Zurg ship had superior technology AND Buzz had all the time in the world literally to just wait for an opportunity to steal it if needed. That would be if he hadn't wasted 50 years of his life inventing time travel to the past.
2.)The agents of Star Command just exempt Buzz of his crimes because he saved them from his future self??? Maybe??? (lol that's so stupid)
The crimes Buzz committed that warrant his arrest occurred BEFORE Buzz became Zurg. (And Zurg, although shown to be intimidating actually never even does anything bad to Star Command in this movie except resist arrest for OG Buzz's actions.) he does kill future Sox :( but that was it and that was after future Sox attacked him first.
ALSO
How did future Buzz get the Zurg ship? He just randomly finds it floating through space after he resists arrest from Star Command and shoots himself far into the future.
Why did Zurg (someone who still keeps mission logs on him everyday of his life) never think to check when exactly his past self would land on the planet? He would have clearly had this knowledge and would have been able to capture his past self without any problems if he had known this and prepared properly.
Personally, the only reason Zurg's plan is implied to be evil is because it's morally questionable to prevent the lives of people from happening by changing the past for your benefit. First off, Zurg changing the past wouldn't even had an affect on the colony members if they went back to the past with him. And btw Zurg tries to kill his past self and doesn't think that will change the future but somehow everything else will? Also I side with Zurg in general. It was for the benefit of the entire space colony to go to their intended destination. Sure the colony made due and adjusted to their new lives stranded but that was because that was all they ever known.
One more problem, why did Buzz not have a problem with missing out on being with his best friend Hawthorne during her life at the colony for the sake of the mission but yet as soon as he spends some time with her granddaughter it's suddenly a sin to continue the mission because why? Buzz you already crossed the morally gray line. You became Zurg the minute Hawthorne died.
Future Buzz and current Buzz are from different timelines now that Zurg stopped Buzz from being arrested, so he can kill him with no consequences because they aren't the same person anymore. And the whole finding an abandoned ship with the Zurg suit and everything it's a setup for a sequel to have the real Zurg take everything back, the actual one who built those things, not future Buzz.
@@komi___ Well that could be true but if so then it only further supports the potential fact that Zurg's plan to go back and change the past wouldn't affect the timeline that they're in. (maybe as long as Buzz's friends just go back in time with Zurg) So Zurg wouldn't have done anything wrong with executing his plan to finish the mission.
old sox was _pretty_ damaged. I don't think he can compute the fusion anymore, and superior tech DOES NOT mean he has infinite materials, and old buzz IS waiting for the perfect opportunity to steal it.
Buzz was already excused because punishing your already limited amount of scientists for following conduct and making a mistake is kind of a bad idea. Also, most of the drama surrounding buzz's supposed "mistake" were self-perpetuated in his mind. He wasn't actually in any real trouble until he tried to continue to cancelled experiments. Also also, by this point, Zurg was using ARMORED ROBOTS in an attempt to BREAK into a colony and steal something. While his actual goal may not be the most crazy thing in the world, Star Command may not know the full story and just see a crazy purple dude attempting to destroy their home and understand his defeat as a feat worthy of a pardon.
1) He might not even have his original suit anymore
2) Even if he did, it's pretty old so the memory logs might be messed up/deleted (which is believable, since he uses it so much)
also killing past buzz doesn't change the future because the future has already diverged. Alternatively, time travel is a fickle thing that nobody actually knows how it works, and they weren't willing to take the risk. also, Zurg is a criminal whether or not his intentions were pure or not

1) Allowed him to understand that nobody cares about his mistake, and that it's ok to let it go and settle down
2) Formed a bond with him, making him unable to let her go (sure, I'll just erase my friend from out of existence)

Its actually come out that the original pitch of the movie didn't have a lesbian fellow ranger - but instead she would have been Buzz's love interest... who he would get to see age and age and then die as part of his lightspeed time-skips. IMO that would have been infinitely more impactful, and would have spoken so much more to what he sacrifices in doing those tests.
Although, I do appreciate how the movie just normalized a character for being LGBTQ+ (even though it was short), I feel like him coming back and seeing Alisha age and living a life without him while also seeming happy would’ve been more emotionally impactful. It would’ve been like Up mixed with Interstellar. I understand how they wanted to break the cliche Disney is known for for always romantically pairing up the male and female friends but in this case, I would’ve perfectly ok with it. Yes, I liked how they showed that a man and a woman can share a friendship together but that idea would have brought more emotion to the story.

So we had a theory about that because if you look at Toy Story 2 their are two buzz lightyear, one is chill the other is a space ragnar with the position to complete his mission. Zurg wakes up to find Andy's buzz's thinking it's his buzz, so what I'm trying to say is future buzz isn't zurg but buzz's father is why I say that, in the scene where the Zurg Reveals His identity Buzz has that look of confusion and the look of lost when he said dad. Meaning buzz's father probably was a space ragnar himself and was lost to space, probably his partner betrayed him or he was abandoned by star command giving him the anger and drive to destroy star command for abandoning him. But future buzz's comes in stealing the ship from zurg to complete his mission, that's why when he Chuckles when Buzz calls him father he didn't have the sad look on his face like fuzz did so that means future Buzz knows something

I actually loved this movie to be fair. It might be because I found it really pretty and a lot of references. I also liked how the characters seemed real to me.
... John Ratzenberger has a quick line as one of the recruiters rejecting Joe in Soul. It's in a sea of voices, and his character isn't seen on-screen, so it's very easy to miss.
I really liked this movie. Not top-tier, but it was fun and satisfying. I also really loved Izzy. She's my favorite new Pixar character since Miguel and Hector from Coco. Maybe Forky.

I'm glad they left the real Zurg's existence open. But this was still supposed to be the movie that Andy saw in theaters back in the late 1990s. And the lore just didn't fit enough for them to say that. Also, despite the lesson, the movie really could've done better without the future Buzz plot. I actually have an idea of how the movie could've been while also giving us the Zurg we love.
The movie would be the same until Buzz would get back from his final test flight. Buzz would come to discover that Emperor Zurg has destroyed the laser shield and turned the colony into a city called Z-city. (Think Aku from Samurai Jack) and would need Izzy's help to trigger a rebellion. I would also have established a division between the people who wanted to stay on the alien planet and people who wanted leave the alien planet. Zurg would use propaganda and false promises in order to gain the people who wanted to leave as his followers and have former Zap soldiers become an army known as the Z-Guard. I would also keep Zurg being from the future because of Buzz's multiple test flights with the crystal, causing an anomaly in time and space, accidentally bringing Zurg to the past. I would've later revealed that Zurg, voiced by Keith David in my version, is the great grandson of Cal Burnside, the commander who told Buzz the mission was over.
It would then be revealed that the division among the people lead to protests, riots and eventually, civil war, which made Burnside obsessed with keeping order, and he believed in doing it through force and after succeeding, his family would later become leaders of a monarchy that wanted to spread their influence throughout the universe until the Galactic Alliance intervened. Before Zurg went to war with the Galactic Alliance, the anomaly Buzz caused would bring Zurg to the past to collaborate with Burnside, who would pretend to be a prisoner of Zurg to keep the people in line and ensure that there was no war by making those who wanted to leave join Zurg, and ensuring that those who want to stay are kept in line.
Zurg's master plan would've been to use the lightspeed crystal to power his ultimate weapon of his Mothership that I call the Hyperspeed Cannon, a weapon with the capacity to destroy an entire planet based on the story Buzz told Woody in the original Toy Story. Zurg plans to basically ransom to keep the Galactic Alliance from interfering with his takeover of the universe and plans to test the weapon on the alien planet that Buzz and everyone is stranded on, which is okay with Burnside as he believes that the people are beyond saving due to Buzz triggering a rebellion.
Another major difference would by Izzy's backstory. Making it so that she wants revenge against Zurg because she was forcefully drafted into the Z-Guard as a child and when her parents tried to protect them, they were captured. The last time she would see them was when she was being carried by a Z-Guard member, hovering through space to get to his ship to take her away for the draft, leading to her fear of space. I would've had Darby be a former convict of Star Command turned a member of the Z-Guard, but betrayed Zurg after realizing how much of a tyrant he is. As for Mo, he would've been an orphan who was drafted as a kid, but was kicked out of Zurg's forces due to his cowardly and quitter personality. I also would've built up to building the Buzz final suit for the final battle.
Finally, the way I would utilize future Buzz is to have him rescue Buzz after being defeated by Zurg in the first round, only to reveal to past Buzz that he was arrested by Burnside after completing his mission for fifty years, but the anomaly past Buzz caused brought Old Buzz to the future and since then he had taken a ship off planet and lived on the alien planet's moon which would be this universes version of the planet Buzz fought Zurg on at the beginning of Toy Story 2. He would teach Buzz not to get so hung up on the past and help the people steer toward their future and help them find their own path, he would also be the one to explain to Buzz that the weakness of the Hyperspeed Cannon is the destruction of the Hyperspeed Crystal itself, leading Buzz to the final battle with Zurg on his Mothership. I would also make it so old Buzz would start to slowly disappear the moment he came contact with past Buzz, as he would theorize that a time traveler cannot exist in the same timeline as a version of himself just to make his meeting with past Buzz more dramatic and sad.
I know this idea isn't perfect, but i truly think it would've kept to the lore Toy Story gave us and gave us the Zurg we deserved to see in this movie. It basically would've been Pixar's Star Wars, mainly because it's obvious that Buzz Lightyear lore was inspired by Star Wars. Zurg is basically Pixar's Darth Vader. I also would've made one of the post credit scenes of Andy who is coming out of the theater with his mother and them hinting at Andy's birthday the next year, connecting to the first Toy Story, making this movie a prequel.

I do hope it gets a sequel. It was better than people gave it credit for. There's actually a theory that the old Buzz Lightyear stole from the real Zurg. It would explain the bots and the suit that were there. But, I have a feeling that the suit itself is Zurg. It doesn't need a pilot. It is its own pilot. Though, that's probably farfetched.

From what I understand in most reviews I've seen, the movie is bland. Bland story, bland characters, heck, even Buzz is bland!
Which might work fine for something like Illumination but for Pixar who is responsible for amazing characters and stories - it simply does not.
Many of the directors who are responsible for some of Pixar's greatest films have either resigned or were fired in the wake of the MeToo movement. Hence why they're experimenting by rotating directors to work on different films at Pixar.

It is, but Sox is so cute and funny, and that kinda saves to movie from being a disaster, a forgetable and not recommendable disaster.

I could see if the film is supposed to be a reboot of the TV series that was released, which I remember watching as a kid, like that chip and dale film that came out recently. Like Andy saw the TV show as a kid and then the show was rebooted for nostalgia. Definitely makes more sense in universe and real life

I also hate how after Sawks figured out the formula for Buzz. So now moving at light years should only take 4 minutes. But yet instead he gets sent 22 years into the future. Not even 4 years.
I guess this was done so they can introduce time travel, but in the way they did it, it's like they wanted to have the formula be successful and fail at sending Buzz to and from the planet under 4 minutes.
It's like they were trying to have their cake and eat it too.
I guess that's because Buzz actually reached light speed so the time dilation was bigger, but if that's the case, wouldn't have been an infinitely long dilation?

One way you can look at it is that, yes, we have many movies like Lightyear now. But maybe it was so popular in the Toy Story universe in the 90s because it was ahead of it's time!

Would've been so much better if they put that ultra-detailed animation to good work and made it look like they were using props on the same level as A New Hope or another Sci-Fi movie of that time. Deliberately make the armor look like shiny plastic, make the lasers look like cheap visual effects, etc.

I just think if they want us to think this was canonically an 80's/90's sci-fi movie, like the beginning of this movie says, then they should actually try to make it look like one, instead of just _saying_ "this is the movie Andy watched that made him want a Buzz Lightyear figure."
I say either frame this as a reboot for Buzz in-universe, or actually stick to the aesthetic of the kind of movie you're pretending this is.

Thought I would just point out that what you said about Jason Headley is untrue - the whole thing of being the 'go-to' for animating Buzz was actually director Angus Maclane. Unlike Maclane, Headley doesn't have a background in animation but screenwriting. Great video though as always!

I have no issue with no one being angry at Buzz. It’s like the writers were trying to write Buzz as if he was delusional about needing to prove to everyone that he can make things better. When really, he’s just trying to prove it to himself.

Do you...have sims music on the background? To be honest I found that very distracting. I actually paused the video multiple times to see if I accidentally had another tap open with a video playing. I think the movie could've been a lot better if they had better writing. Some of it was just recycle the lines over and over. It was to the point to where I was counting when they would say the same shit. Also the one line that keeps hitting me that I thought was really cringe was "I'm gunna go back and matter again"

I don't know if this is an intentional reference but I think Sox is a reference to Jonesy (the orange cat) in Alien.
Notice how during the zyclops battle while buzz was getting carried to the telepad the zyclops never tried to hurt buzz since later in the movie old buzz is known a zurg to the zyclops
