    you can use a roller,then line it out with a good clean well used 4inch brush, if your not a capable painter, and for those who don't know there are rollers specialy made for gloss paint, but don't use the cheepos from b+q,, sponge roller fill the paint with air bubbles,and sometimes drop bits of sponge,,,and of course every paint manufacturer will tell you to thin paint before rolling, I wouldn't recommend a four inch brush for any one not competent with painting, , 2 to 2 1/2 inch is big enough, ease your glose paint of with thinner until you feel comfortable with it, you don't want it pulling when you aply it , it should flow smooth. load your brush with paint ,don't just dip it in the tin make sure you use the right brush with the right paint don't use a natural bristle type brush on synthetic paint. when you buy a brush buy one with plenty of guts in , if you look at the brush from the bristle end and thers a big gap in the middle its no good, you could try a round turks head type brush they come in all shapes. have fun , as a painter of 40 years I can tell you the more worn in a brush is the better finish it gives, so always break your brushes in before using them on gloss

      Tom c My Dad was a third generation, residential painter who began painting when he was about 13 and retired at 70. He also owned his own company with 8+ employees, and I still have some of his brushes which I use today. They are beautiful brushes and very thick with bristles, still. My point is, buy the very best you can afford and take very good care of them, and they will reward you with many years of use.

    What ive always found when im painting is that im always taking off what ive just applied because i keep going over it by rolling or brushing too hard which leaves blotches. Now when i paint with a brush i just go down with nice thin strokes. When roller brushing i go up and down then if i found any air bubbles just gently roll over it so i don't take any paint off. Im getting better at it. You have to be fairly quick when painting because sometimes it can dry that fast that you don't get time to smooth it out.

    Sorry to ask a question this way but don't know how to message you otherwise? I've come across a problem when glossing!
    Ive finished laying off after Glossing with Green over white Oil based undercoat on a long hallway of T&G and things looked all good, until it started to "fisheye" over the entire length!
    I spent the next 40 mins continually laying off in panic trying to cover the ever increasing amount of fisheyes but had to stop once the paint got too tacky.
    So! the Undercoated surface must have got contaminated somehow! But question is what do I need to do now to save this? I'm at a loss so reaching out..!

    Excellent demonstration of roll-and-tip, which is my favorite method for small jobs (like a front door) where quality is of paramount importance. The beauty of this method (as demonstrated in the video) is that you can leave very clean edges along lines where the brush direction changes from horizontal to vertical. This lessens the importance of keeping a wet edge, although the speed of the roller vs. the brush makes it easier to maintain wet edges.

    To answer Ian's question about the type of paint: having been on one of John's excellent courses, I can tell you he tends to work with one of four different manufacturers, International, Craftmaster, Epiphanes or Masons. Which one he uses on any particular job depends on customer preference, as all are quality brands. John explains on the course the importance of having a system though, as not all are compatible with each other.

    Can any painters please help. What about primer when painting over old gloss? Does that need to be laid off as well before glossing? Or just sand the primer down then gloss?

      Hi i tend to stick to back to metal, but the guy i started with would machine back the gloss, spot prime where needed then undercoat the whole side, two coats, machine back for a flat finish then gloss two coats,
      hope this helps

    I'm not knocking here, but I'd have used a 9 inch roller and a wet brush which means you can do the panel as one. I started coach painting in 1973, so I do know a bit.

    I just proved that tipping is not only unnecessary it only makes for brush strokes. After sanding down my first coat I tried rolling only. The trick is to thin quite a bit. To remove the bubbles simply roll the roller over the bubbles as light as possible. No roller marks no brush marks. Flows out instantly.

    • @JohnbarnardBiz
      @JohnbarnardBiz  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      hi guys,
      thanks for the comments, i use larger rollers and a wet brush, this is just a small part of a very much larger course and does not reflect all that goes on. a roller will give you the finish you have got, so will the way i showed if you "thin quite a bit" you can not get brush marks in water! thinning means lots of coats or you will have no film thickness and a painted surface that does not last, also to much thinning leads to loss of gloss.
      remember paint is there to protect the steel

    • @Kotaztrafee
      @Kotaztrafee 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found this morning that using a dry roller works best. It allows one to keep the application roller loaded for an even, thicker coat. The dry foam roller flattens the bubbles.

    • @Kotaztrafee
      @Kotaztrafee 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tried a low thinner/thicker application this morning. Very high humidity and the dry roller didn't work as well as the application roller. The thicker formula seems to be leaving a slight orange peel finish. Maybe it will flow out. Seems best to let most of the bubbles pop them self then come over it with just the weight of the roller or less. I'm not saying one can't do a better job using a brush but I am saying just using the roller is working great for me. Give it a try.

    • @ladygardener100
      @ladygardener100 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In order to get the required thickness you need to do more coats, so thinning is defeating the object

      @@Kotaztrafee Mate, that is a fantastic tip. Going to try it. I use my paint roller under only its own weight to remove bubbles. A dry roller will do a better job. Thanks.

    I was tought by a fairground painter he said never use gloss paint its a lazy mans finish . just one coat of primer if metal is showing then two flat undercoats and light sand after first followed by second undercoat then two coats of flat top coat , sand after second coat then two coats of yacht varnish this will last a lifetime just sand and re varnish every four years and it will always shine better than any gloss paint . It works people always comment on my boats finish .

    • @JohnbarnardBiz
      @JohnbarnardBiz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Harry
      i would agree, but with my boat painting i have to stick to the manufactures guidelines for film thickness etc to meet there standards and in doing so receive there support, also most of my customers are not going to bring there boat back every 4 years for re varnishing when the mono-urethane we now use will last beyond that time and could be varnished after say eight to ten years with the same result

    • @niptodstan
      @niptodstan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      james t . I agree. The other reply is bullshit. I started painting at 15, 43 years ago. The roller wasn't invented then! I was a coach painter and had to paint sides of lorries with a 3 inch brush. When rollers came out it was a godsend, get the paint on with the roller and then lay it off with the brush to leave no orange peel. Anything that makes the job easier is acceptable.

    • @orbitalforest

      There are rollers specifically for gloss paint you numpty.
      I can get through a lot of doors with a roller a lot quicker than just by brush and with a superior finish.
