Every time anybody brings up the subject people start getting angry. I think it’s because if you don’t talk about it, it’ll go away, but it’s not going away. The whole class thing is stupid. For instance, in my state, a bicycle has to follow the same rules as the automobile. Therefore there shouldn’t be classes, there should be speed limits. I mean they don’t tell me if I have a 4 cylinder car I can drive in residential neighborhoods but if you have an 6 cylinder I can not drive in residential neighborhoods and if you have a 8 cylinders you can only drive on highways. And it’s also against the law for me to use crosswalks or ride on sidewalks if I’m mounted on the bike. So I need the ability to move faster on the road. But in my state, anything over a 750 Watt is considered an out of class vehicle not allowed on the road. Thank you Russ for bringing up the subject. It’s near dear to my heart. Bring on the arguments Guys❤

I'm not concerned about speed, and would set a distance goal on any given day, depending how I felt. The local park I ride at has a asphalt "trail", which is ~2.5 miles in distance. Mostly hills/inclines, with very little flat area to ride. On good days I would get 10-12 miles riding the 2.5 mile trail. It could get boring, but would vary the direction/route I took throughout the ride. This 70yr old is looking forward to Spring arriving. 😎

When I first began looking at full size e-bikes, I was inclined to purchase a Class III model. Then, I gave more thought about the legal 15 mph speed limit on public PATHS in in the State of Washington. One thing is for sure. Now, that we have the new e-bikes and the inertia of a 62 pound bike along with our own body weight, neither of us would ever want to experience a fall or collision at 15 miles per hour. Is 20 mph fast enough for casual riding? Absolutely.

My class 3 ebike will do 28 mph in 'sport mode' by pedaling or throttle. I have no need to go faster, otherwise would have purchased a motorcycle. Hoping spring comes early. 😊

I personally don't care either. I'm new to the e-bike world. I retired a few months ago and began looking for some new hobbies to fill up some of my free time. Before 6 months ago I had never given any thought to purchasing or riding an electric bike. I have 2 expensive mountain bikes that have been sitting in my garage for over 10 years and have barely been ridden. I tell myself that was because I was working and didn't have the time or energy to really make good or frequent use of my mountain bikes. Now that I am retired and have the time, I don't have the strength and stamina needed to ride mountain bikes. My son has grown up and moved away and we always rode together. So and e-bike seemed a logical and practical alternative. I purchased the Wired Freedom and it was delivered exactly one week ago. I have only ridden it about 5 miles due to the constant rain we get near Seattle where I live. I love the bike. It is very powerful. I like to pedal a lot for exercise so my intention is to primarily ride in PAS 1 or 2 the majority of the time. I've had the bike up to 25 mph and that is plenty of speed for me. It'll go faster but I don't feel safe at those higher speeds. I rode a motorcycle for years on the freeways of LA. Commuted 80 miles a day. Fell once at about 20 mph at about 28 years old. Lots of road rash. Now I'm 62 and I really don't want to end up on the ground with this old body. lol... ♥

Russ, Thank you for rising this issue.
It is my understanding that many states have adopted the following or very similar three class definitions of electric bicycles:
"A “class 1 electric bicycle” is a bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance
only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle
reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.
A “class 2 electric bicycle” is a bicycle equipped with a motor that may be used
exclusively to propel the bicycle, and that is not capable of providing assistance when the
bicycle reaches the speed of 20 miles per hour.
A “class 3 electric bicycle” is a bicycle equipped with a motor that provides assistance
only when the rider is pedaling, and that ceases to provide assistance when the bicycle
reaches the speed of 28 miles per hour, and is equipped with a speedometer."
In the above definitions, repeated phrase " A motor that provides assistance only when the rider is pedaling" raises an interesting question:
To me, the above phrase means that neither Class 1 bikes nor Class e bikes may have throttles, because Class 1 and Class 3 bikes by definition may provide power only when the rider is pedaling.
Furthermore, the federal definition of electric bicycle: “a two or three-wheeled vehicle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts (1 h.p.), whose maximum speed on a paved level surface, when powered solely by such a motor while ridden by an operator who weighs 170 pounds, is less than 20 mph.” Note: 1 hp is actually 746 watts.
So, I would additionally conclude that the motor on any electrical bike operated on public streets, roads, or bike paths must be less than 750 watts, and if such a bike has a throttle, the throttle must cease to provide power when the bike reaches 20 mph when being powered by throttle alone.
The question of whether or not riding a " non-compliant electric bicycle" will put the rider in jeopardy of receiving a citation is a valid question, but the rider faces greater financial risk as well. Apart of the narrow issue of whether or not such state and federal laws are bing enforced by law enforcement professionals, there are also issues related to liability of the operator and insurability of the electric bike.
My insurance company will not insure anything but a class 1 bike which is under one horse power, (1 hp = 746 watts), and that a would seem to rule out any 750 watt bicycle, because 750 watts is neither less than 750 watts, nor is 750 watts less than one horsepower. I have also checked with insurance companies that sell insurance specifically for electric bicycles. At east one company will write policies for bikes with throttles that exceed 20 mph as long as the maximum motor assisted speed is 28 mph or less. Other insurance companies will not write policies for any bike with a throttle that is or can be adjusted to to provide throttle assistanceat at speeds over 20 mph.
You might ask why insurance or legality of operation of eclectic bikes are important issues for riders. My answer to that question is that if you are involved in an accident while riding an e-bike which does not comply with state and federal or local laws and regulations, you could face both criminal and civil liability for any injury or property damage that occurs in the accident. Let's suppose that you were riding a bike with a throttle that exceeds 20 mph and/or pedal assist that can be adjusted to operate at speeds exceeding 28 mph. If you were involved in an injury accident or an accident that damages the property of others while riding on a bike path that is limited under state or local laws or regulations to Class 1 and/or Class 2 bikes, you could be charged with gross negligence for riding an illegal, unlicensed motor vehicle on a restricted bike path. This could substantially affect the outcome of civil litigation if the other party involved in the accident were to have been injured.
Many of the bikes equipped with pedal-assist-only mid-drive motors comply with both federal and state laws and regulations, so there are bikes out there that a are legally operable on public streets and roads. I like the idea of having a throttle as well as pedal assist, but I am not willing to purchase bike that does not comply with federal and state laws and regulations.

Mine is Class 3 with a good gear ratio where I can keep pedaling while throttling. Powering down hills I notice that my throttle will keep engaged at about 31 or 32 MPH but only providing about 200Watts. I rarely ride on any walk/bike paths as they are often too crowded.

Doing about 30 MPH down the trail I got airborne on a turn and flew off trail and into the bush. 4 months later my wounds finally healed up with a few new stiff joints left in the wake. Like Russ says get protective gear if you are going to modify your ebike parameters just a few miles an hour faster can cause a lot more damages in an accident.

Good Morning Russ. So, I rode over 8,000 km (nearly 5,000 miles) since I bought my e-bike 10 months ago from RTG E Bikes. In a few weeks I will need to replace my brake pads, but my tires are still in good condition with thread still. I really enjoy my e-bike and my back feels 100% better since I've been riding it because I fractured my spine two summers ago. E-bikes relieve stress, gives exercise and overall they're very fun. My e-bike is set for 40 km/hr (25 mph) so it's a class 2.5 LOL. The fastest I rode my e-bike was 60 km/hr and this was way too fast for me. Thank You for this video, I Hope your health gets better.😎

  • @Altema22

To be honest, I like to pedal, and my typical speed is about 14mph. My default mode is a fully legal class 2, with 750 watts and 20mph motor cutoff, and I use this mode always in state parks where I ride.
However, my bike has been modified for hill climbing, rescue, and towing, so special modes are available for that. It takes lots of torque to haul 2 e-bikes and 2 adults (close to 500 pounds at times), and this bike can pull loads like this up hills at 20mph. As a side effect of the extra power, it can go 40mph, but I almost never do unless I'm riding with Sur Ron's and Onyx's. If we get pulled over by the police in those situations (yep, that's happened), my stock-looking RadMini gets ignored by officers making the stop.

I do care! My Okai EB50 (AKA Ranger) sits squarely BETWEEN the Class designations. It was originally Class 2, and OKAI provided a "Speed Unlock" allowing 30-31 mph under best conditions. This was PAS but ALSO THROTTLE ONLY. Which doesn't conform to Class 3: 20mph throttle, and 28 pedaling (Ghost pedaling included, technically if not within the "intent" of the classification.
Do I care? YES! I LOVE IT, and as long as I don't get hassled or fined, I am perfectly content. I don't want to race, be lawless, endanger anyone or cause problems. Just want to ride, up to reasonable speeds, and enjoy the ride!

Unless it had huge batteries (which would cost you and be heavy), it wouldn’t help you explore more. Range goes down exponentially the faster you go. So if you can go 25 miles as you typically ride at 15-20 mph, at 40 mph, you’d probably get well less than 10 miles of range.

E-bike laws and classifications vary from state to state. It can be very confusing. While Classes 1 and 2 are pretty much written in stone, at least here in the States, Class 3 is a little muddier. For instance, in California, a Class 3 e-bike cannot have a throttle period. Only Class 2 e-bikes are allowed to have throttles. Yet in California e-bikes are allowed on the sidewalks as any bicycle is. Many other States prohibit that. You just have to know your laws for your particular State. And many cities have their own unique laws regarding e-bikes too.

I have a true Class 2, I like to stay within the law and be safe around pedestrians on the cycle paths I use.
Class 3 isn't legally allowed on the cycle paths or lanes in my state. They're not even classed as bicycles, they're motorized vehicles.
Anything that goes faster than 28 under throttle power is skirting the law, trying to avoid the license and registration required for a moped or motor cycle, and I'm sure there will eventually be a clampdown if they start becoming a nuisance.
I got my eBike for fitness, so I rarely use the throttle, but wanted it there for reassurance if I get too tired to pedal.

I think the classifications are wonky. I'd think, that "behavior" on or with the bike is much more important than a rather esoteric "classification" based on not particularly obvious technical features.
Starting to shop/consider an e-bike. I'd thought the bikes were to be marked with a classification "sticker" but didn't see them or at least not obvious when looking at a few. I've seen discussions of re-stickering or disconnecting and/or removing throttles. Or possible "laws" about "altering" equipment. (Which reminds me of certain motor vehicle or firearms laws and enforcement issue similarities and differences from place to place). What about "access" or ADA ("disability") concerns. Maybe one might be using the bike/trike as a mobility aid and has differing abilities to grip and/or peddle?
I think as a broad community we want access to recreational and low impact transportation. Limited or no impact to other users of the areas. Safety - appropriate control and speed. Going "too fast," tearing up trails, cutting switchbacks, etc. doesn't require a vehicle at all. California has a patchwork of allowances/restrictions. State Parks and "recreations" are locally controlled by region, district or location. National Parks are different, to the extent I can tell, e-bikes are allowed where bikes are allowed. I think it would be far easier to have simpler access regs and try to deal with "mis-use," and the like.

It makes no sense the government is okay with motor+pedal=28 mph but not Motor=28mph. Both are going the same speed and pedaling isn’t really used anymore. This is like automatic transmission vs manual it really doesn’t matter at that point.

I think speed limits would be the simplest solution on trails and in National & State Parks, all this class thing could snowball into more government regulations that will only benefit the career politicians and the lobbyist. Nobody respects bicyclist around here anyway, with the exception of riding in the subdivision, i stay on the bike trails.

Most of my riding involves street traffic. Even though I average around 20mph, for both safety and personal reasons, it's good that my Class 3 can reach 28mph on throttle-only input (for which I've gone up to it as needed).

Let’s agree to disagree if. The ebike companies have to take responsibility as well you don’t see car manufacturers selling illegal cars, and for the ebike companies the do adhere to the regulations they are not competing on a level playing field. How about a simple solution have easy to access settings that a user can select and be displayed, classes 1, 2, 3, and unrestricted and non of this in between gray area stuff. And what is with people going on about “class” 4. If we give Them a reason to regulate and ban access THEY will

Down hill is always faster. The e-bikes doesn’t weigh as much as a motorcycle so it is less stable going down a hill than a motorcycle. This is why I feel the conversion e-bikes with even lighter bikes could be a bit dangerous.

I crank it down to class 2 for multi use paths though.
I don't think we should worry about class 2, class 4 or no class bikes. It's currently more important to get cars off the road, and 30 MPH bicycles are, IMO, a key component of doing that.
