I started riding my EBIKE last May, at that time I had artery blockages in my leg. With a small change in diet and 1800+ miles my leg is so much better. I bought the bike for fun/exorcize, it worked. And thank Russ for inspiring me and others.
    Blessings.

I am diabetic have been for a few years now. I was diagnosed around 58 years old and am 63 now. I was 288 lbs and had been for years. I was told to eat no more than 50 carbs per meal. I just made sure not to eat more than 150 carbs per day. you can find meals that are low carb from keto diet plans. there is loaf bread that's keto related it does not cause my sugar to go up. my A1C has been as high as 14 something they want to put me on insulin but I told them let me start eating right and check it again it when down and so did my weight. if you eat low carb and eat Greek yogurt with blue berries or black berries instead of icecream. get some kitchen scales to weigh you food so you know carb counts of what you eat. after some time you will know what you can eat and how it effects your blood sugar. I am 240 lbs now and my last A1C was 5.8. I also have problems with sugar going low so they put me on a 24 hour sensor that wakes me up and I eat or drink something sweet to get it back up. if you have any questions I will try answer them if I know. Can you do a Monday review on your indoor bike may need one for my wife. hope you get good news.

I'm a type 2 diabetic. You're on a path that will change the rest of your life. While you may halt the progression of this disease, there is no cure. Most important is that you lose the weight - insulin resistance is very sensitive to weight - and exercise regularly (BTW, if you have trouble walking any distance, try trekking poles). Exercise and a sensible diet are far better than any medicine!
Harder than losing the weight (you are about 90 lbs above your ideal weight) is maintaining it. So find a diet that you can sustain for the long haul. The diet you describe in your video sounds very similar to a Ketogenic diet. I love your attitude, especially as concerns medication (there are, by the way, meds that are a LOT more expensive than insulin). Meds will slow disease progression, but they're nowhere near as effective as weight loss and exercise.
There is probably no chronic disease more amenable to healthy behaviors than Diabetes II. You CAN stop it in its tracks, but remember you're in it for the long haul. Don't be an idiot like me. Though for the most part, with diet, exercise and meds, I've halted the progression of my disease, I waited too long. I have peripheral neuropathy, arterial sclerosis, kidney disease, all consequences of diabetes. And once the damage is done, it's permanent.
Despite it all, I'm a happy fella: I still ride my E-Bike every day! Best of luck. I follow your every video.

Sorry to hear about your possible diagnosis but I’m glad you’re addressing it. Age is an adventure, my friend. As for the treadmill, don’t work about the posted weight limit. Most manufacturers post very conservative limits so you should be fine. And, it will allow you to have some variety in your workouts. Hope you get better soon.

Hang in there. A year or so ago I finally crossed the line from borderline/pre-diabetic to full blown type 2. It was accompanied with the weight loss, then bounce back gain. Months later, I'm down around 50 from my peak (not sure what it was, so I'm taking my best guess). I've essentially eliminated my sodas, starches from rice (both white and brown....which is a sacrifice for a Filipino), portion control, regular fasting, and drinking more water, and tea, while reducing my coffee intake (lowering my caffeine overall). I'm definitely feeling better while also being more mobile. I can definitely tell the difference in my stamina while regularly walking around Disneyland/DCA...and how I fit on rides, etc.
Keep up the work, and share your journey. I know that I'm not the only one supporting you.

Hi Russ, my new E-bike arrived this week, but it will be months before I can ride it, as we have terrible winters where I live. During the winter I resort to walking and rowing. I find rowing to be a great low-impact exercise and I can watch TV (hockey) while I row. I've enjoyed getting to know you through your posts and I wish you all the best for an effective management of your health! Your channel is one of the ones that have inspired me to try out the e-bike life. I have been a traditional cyclist for over 50 years. Best wishes!

Yes ,my doctor prescribed Jardiance. Takes a long time to bring down your A1c diet ,pills and exercise. Being overweight can be a contributing factor as well as age lucky us. Your doctor will get you moving in the right direction....pick and choose your foods with meds.will bring down your A1c and blood sugar!!!!!!! You got this Russ..

You can get through this. You already realize inaction and diet are the biggest issues. On the diet side concentrate on reducing Carbohydrates, especially the simple carbs (sugar, white bread etc). Don't skip medicine. With ebiking I got my A1C down to 6.5, it's doable!

Hi Russ, I'm glad you shared, as it makes us all aware of our own battles! I am also pre-diabetic, and my doctor said to get rid of some weight. I stopped eating pasta, potatoes, breads, no more pizza and stay away from junk food. It is really tough when I enjoy cooking and eating the foods that I grew up with. I was nearing the 260 mark and now at about 241.
My parents, both diabetic in their later years, my mom passed away recently due to complications with the diabetic issues, my father is in failing health due to the same reason. I am trying my best to avoid the same problems as my parents, so I feel for you as well. It is possible to make these changes, just not easy. My prayers are with you for the strength to do better.

I am diabetic. Fortunately I'm not insulin-dependent. I lost 70 lb from biking and I'm almost in remission😊 I do watch what I eat. Fortunately I live in Southwest Florida so I write a lot. Russ don't be surprised if they put you on medication until they stabilize your blood sugar possibly even insulin in the beginning just to get you stabilized if they do don't be discouraged because you could work on losing your weight and probably be a lot less dependent on medication in the future and possibly go into remission best of luck buddy we're All in this together God bless

Good luck Russ. I learned how to eat right from the Nutrition Diva podcast and made new habits that stick with me to this day. Although some of the food you eat needs to change right away, try replacing one bad food at a time each week with something new and healthier. As you consume less carbs you will start enjoying the flavor of these foods and need very little dressing. Also consider you can eat to a diet 6 days a week and give yourself one day off. Something to look forward to, just watch the portion size.

Hey Russ, was worried about your absense and relieved you filled us in. Glad you're taking a proactive approach by getting a blood test for A1C and changing to a healthier diet, yeah it's extremely hard! I've been pre diabetic for 10+ years with a recent A1C of 6.4.
I've reduced my sugar and carbs intake, the desserts, pasta and rice, with more fish, salads (yes there are sugar free dressings) and water intake. Rice has always been a staple in my diet being Japanese so that will be difficult plus I'm a sweet tooth. But we all have to change and make adjustments as we get older.
I see you have some great support, advice and suggestions from your subscribers. Thanks Russ for including us in your new journey and we all wish you the very best👋It's all going to work out👍

You are absolutely correct on how important it is to remain active. Throughout the years, I've noticed patterns and correlations between higher health risks and inactivity. And yes, recliners happen to fall into those patterns. For the past 22 years that I've been cycling, I've noticed drops in my performance after two days of inactivity. Therefore, not only do I cycle to work, I also try to get some cycling in on my days off. Best two strategies: 1) Stay active and do not give up cycling, 2) Never go by the food pyramid presented to us back in the 1980s (breads/pastas as the most recommended highest serving sizes). Take care of yourself, my fingers crossed for you.

Russ: I wish you the best with this diabetes stuff. I was pre-diabetic in '22 with blood sugar over the normal range. When I went back in the fall of '23, I had lost an additional 10 lbs., was eating better and getting more exercise thanks to my ebike and was below 7 for my A1C and fasting blood sugars were normal. Whew, I managed to avoid medication but I also know I have to watch what and how much I eat and limit my Laz-e-boy time. It's not so easy when life throws distractions and temptations in our way, but so far, so good. I look forward to getting back on the bike again in the Spring and in the meantime will probably go back to Planet Fitness 2-3 times/wk. just to get me out of the house in winter. Whatever happens, stay positive! I

Russ, I've been on the journey with you - had my first tkr the same week as you, I could not keep up with you in knee range. Had the second one 6 months later. Got diagnosed with high a1c six weeks ago (7.2). Signed up for 'factor' pre packaged fresh keto meals. Got an electric bike 8 weeks ago (Aventon 2) and have been pounding the trails 5 days a week since. I feel a whole lot better and the meals make it easy. I go in for a second blood test in six weeks. Hi Russ, it's good that you are getting treatment for this. Unchecked, diabetes can be really nasty. The first hurdle is getting in the right frame of mind. I've been type 2 diabetic for 30 years . Even after loosing the extra weight I still battle with high blood sugar. Riding bikes and walking (or any exercise) is what keeps me in a normal blood sugar range. Good for you for recognizing the symptoms early. Wishing you all the best.

Russ, No need to apologize for anything. I am newly retired from the medical field. This is not advise, just food for thought. Always do lab test fasting. My colleagues and i always questioned the non fasting lab tests. They were consistently higher than fasting tests. Also take note of your liver function tests. The ALT and AST may reveal a fatty liver. If you haven't had one, you should ask your MD if he/she thinks you should get a CT abdomen and pelvis. Ct can give you all sorts of information. As we get older things start happening. I understand the recliner issue. Recently had a torn rotator cuff repair. Worse surgery and rehab i have ever had. Was in recliner for almost 6 months, 3 months with the tear and 3 mos after sx. Not to mention i was totally inactive and taking opioids which was wreaking havoc with my stomach and bowels.
I was miserable and gained 18lbs. I am a senior athlete who had become a slug. Not good for my health.
All my lab work was out of wack. I am just now getting back to some semblance of normal. Being sedentary is the worst think for the body, especially as we get older. Good luck, take care and we will all say prayers for you and your health. Keep moving man.

Hey buddy. God bless you! My diabetes started out the same way. Drinking and peeing. Every time I would get up to pee, I got so thirsty that I would need to drink. Usually, fruit punch or soda. I felt like I had the flu. It got so bad I ended up in the hospital with keto acidosis. They told me I had lost 35 lbs. I had no clue. I was an electrician in NYC. I drove around New York City in a cherry picker fixing street lights. Looking back, the very first sign was that it got harder and harder to read the street signs. I used to be able to read them from 2 blocks away. Then, it got less and less. I was also overweight. About 260. I was trying to lose weight so I would have like 3 pieces of fruit for lunch. That only made it worse. Anyway, that was almost 35 years ago, and I'm still kicking. If you have to go on insulin, don't be afraid. The only thing I want to tell you is try to stay away from fatty foods. It will make it harder for the insulin to work. I just recently found that out.

I hope for the best in your health, diabetes is a life changing thing. I didn't know losing weight, and going to the bathroom lots is a sign of diabetes. I wouldn't worry too much about having to take insulin, unless you are very bad with ur sugar levels.
I just got home from riding in the cold and snow flurries, it was 29°F with windchill of 18°F. It's snowing hard now. WOW I was so cold, my hands were freezing even with gloves on, I rode about 8 miles.
Thank You for this video, I personally appreciate hearing about your health, I consider all of us TH-cam Friends.

I'm 5'9" and I was up to 310 lbs. A1C was 6.0 doctor wanted me to go on metformin. I told her if i didnt lose weight by the next time i come in I'll take the drug..I hate drugs. I went on the keto diet...I am now at 263lbs. I got a glucose meter and my glucose went from 140s to 90-110. Im pretty sure my A1C will be way down next time the doctor tests me. I did the salads and every diet under the sun before this with no success no matter how I lessened calories, no mattr how much I exercised. I can absolutely tell you that we've been lied to our whole lives with the Standard American Diet (SAD). I feel great, i dont have the sugar cravings, I actually kept the weight off during the holidays, even though I cheated a little. I have only been on it for a couple of months. I have also looked into the carnivore diet with some curiosity as well as skepticism, and the nutritional theory behind it seems solid, but I don't know if i could maintain it, but a more strict keto diet, I think I could maintain that. I do feel like i have much more energy now that i have switched over to ketones as an energy source, but there definitely is a transition phase about a couple of weeks where i felt lethargic. You have to blow through that though. Try it, you'll like it. Just my two cents.

Sallads are all right, but you can't keep eating them all the time! I recommend vegetable soups, they can be very delicious and satiating as well, you still have to be able to enjoy eating...!😊

Best wishes, Russ! Medicare Advantage for gym membership is a great benefit. I signed up last fall and am slowly getting into the groove of it. My favorite activity is running and working out in the pool. I use resistance paddles in the pool to get some upper body work. I have a bone-on-bone knee joint and had a careless muscle strain in my side and lower back in July. I could not bear to sit on a bike seat nor did I have full range of motion to ride safely. My doctor is enthusiastic about my activity increase.
Prior to joining the gym I reduced my A1C from pre-diabetic range into a healthy range by losing 50 pounds so far on Noom program (“there are no bad foods”). Work with a nutritionist if you can. Because for me, I could not survive on salads without a whole lot of resentment! Thanks for sharing your journey. Keeping positive thoughts for your healthy recovery after the cough and the possible diabetes.

I was diagnosed with Diabetes a year ago. A1C was 8.7 - very high. Long stort short, Dr put me on Mounjaro and since last March, have lost over 50 Lbs. 6'1" and was 284 .. now 229!!! Been riding the ebike as much as possible. Mounjaro ... look into it. You can only eat so much salad. Loose the weight on Mounjaro ans it will change your life. Check out Gary's Ebike Adventures... we're all in the same boat. I'm 67 years old. Feeling ready for the Olympics!!!

So glad to see you Russ. Check out the Mediterranean diet for a better mix of essential nutrients. Fish chicken, vegetables fruits to name a few. Use a smart watch or get a Heart rate moniteer and track your activity as a function of HR and intensity. If you are not riding, walk. In addition to the ebike, I have a smart trainer that is hooked up to a road bike. Garmin makes some great smart watches. Prayers for you Russ.

Hi Russ, I'm also overweight, I work behind a desk all day from home so losing weight is very difficult. I'm also experiencing the extreme dry mouth especially when I wake up. Diabetes does run in my family, I haven't seen a doctor yet but the dry mouth confirms I am diabetic. I also have the Schwinn recumbent bike, to make it not so boring I ride using a Quest 2 VR headset. There's a lot of VR bike ride videos on TH-cam that make it more enjoyable to ride your exercise bike that make you feel like you're outside when you're not. The VR bike rides through Las Vegas and New York are great, it really does look like your riding through the city. You should check it out.

Welcome to the Club. I think some people are inherent for this I've had it for well over 10 yrs. Mine was kept in check with glybuteride. It doesn't cost much nowadays, 25.00 for 90 days. For whatever in last 6 months things have changed. Last check up a1c 9.2 I knew that was high, the blood sugar level was 206. Normally with glybuteride I could stay around 130. I'm am trying different approaches to diet. Like using a wok and entertaining a stir fry diet devoid of pasta. Meat and vegtables. The drugs you mentioned those are outrageously expensive I refuse to take them. I am curios about your diagnosis. They usually check your sugar level at every Dr Visit. I remember they would say your blood sugar is high its a 5, this kept going on no one tells you 7 is magic number for diabetes. So when I hit seven the lights and sirens went off an I was told I was a diabetic. There was no information as to what you should do it just your sugar is high your a 6. Reason I'm curios in your case if 13 was what the alc I would think you would have a lot of other symptoms such as neuropathy in your legs and feet. It's far from the end of the world. One thing I'm surprised is you do move alot even if you claim you don't pedal alot. I think diabetes makes you tired and not want to move. I never heard about weight loss with diabetes because of the disease maybe diet when you regiment one. Good luck on your journey. One word of advice when you go on medicare go with supplement, not an advantage plan.

Again, if the dr. puts you on insulin, get the shortest needle as possible. They don't hurt. Mine are about a 1/4" long. I think something like 32mm. A lot of the times I don't even feel it going in. Just something nobody told me about. I found out by myself. I am also taking Ozempic. But it's hard to get because of people also taking it for weight loss.

Prayed for you and asked our LORD Most High that all becomes well for you.
I came down with Severe Plaque Psoriasis in 21' and found that it's the cousin to diabetes.
I did research and my doctor also confirmed my findings. We definitely are what we eat, I found that I had to change my eating habits as well. All the foods I love to eat are on my list of foods I shouldn't be eating.
    Was like darn it!!
So in short diet and proper exercise defintely helps control diabetes, I think you will be able to control your diet and continue to ride.
Stay safe and you also helped me on deciding to get an E-Bike. Thinking about a Surron or maybe a style like yours.
Until next time Peace and Love Brother from Texas!

You know what you need to do. I was prediabetic for 20 years. With two meds and regular ebike riding I’m under seven. Body doing much better. I took of 35 pounds. I’m a light 200. Still hoping to lose 10 lbs. issue less urgent. Do a sleep study. Protect your body. Check on a Medicare advantage plan. Many offer more services like free gym membership. I use mine in the winter and ride a recumbent bike at the Y.

Hey Russ, try a KETO diet! I stuck to it for a while, and it turned my health around without exercising whatsoever. I don't do it anymore TBH, after I turned my health around on keto i was able to eat pizzas and mcdonalds again. But when I did keto, I kept my net carbs under x amount each day. I ate protein and healthy fats, would allow carbs for salads & vegetables, low amounts of fruit, healthy stuff. Totally quit eating all the trash carbs/snacks, and sugar drinks etc. I had to stop grazing on snacks and stuff all day long. And be really aware of how many carbs are in things. Especially sugary drinks I had to totally stop. When avoiding carbs there is a tendency to shift towards other sweeteners, but its important to be aware ARTIFICIAL sweeteners like sucralose / splenda / aspartame / etc are unhealthy despite being sugar free. So i would look for things sweetened with NATURAL sweeteners such as stevia, erythritol and monk fruit. I basically stopped eating all the processed junk in packages. And started eating alot of meat, eggs, dairy, salads with olive oil / avocado oil, healthy fats, etc. I started avoiding seed / vegetable oils like canola, its really bad for you. I only use avocado and coconut oil for cooking. When trying to eat more healthy fats, take it easy on nuts, I only eat small amounts of nuts Lol or bad things happen to me personally. I have a number of family members who have had great results as well. Everyone is different, so experiment around and see what works! In my case it was all about carbohydrate control, and eliminating toxic junk. You can find good recipes to replace things. Eg I make lemonade with liquid stevia, pinch of redmonds real salt, and True Lemon. Another thing I did was I got this High potency Manuka honey from new zealand one time and I ate that stuff on an empty stomach every morning and evening with a spoon for a while. I think it healed my stomach some how. 🤣😂 That's my keto adventure story. I'm gonna leave now. Thanks for the update Russ!!

  • @bobmorris6599

Morning Russ. I don't mean to bombard you with advice but here it comes. I have been a type 2 prediabetic for over 15 years.. My A1c has remained mostly between 5.8 and 7. So most of what I'm about to say is based mostly on experience. Fist of all listen to your doctor. Weight, diet, and exercise are what you should be concentrating on. On weight.. if you eat correctly and exercise the weight will take care of it's self.. On diet, you may want to visit with nutritionist who will help you lay out a diet plan. For an understanding diabetes and the foods you should be eating I like the "SugarMD" who does excellent TH-cam Vids. Lastly exercise, do more but don't over do it. Your heart rate will tell you where you are and you want to be for the most part in the fat burning zone. BTW I became a biker soon after I found out I was a type 2 diabetic about 20 years ago and still love it.

Your cough is a post viral cough. Unfortunately it lasts for months not weeks and nothing will make it go away. Since you already attempted to treat post nasal drip, GERD, etc and it remained that is what you had. Antibiotics will do nothing for it either. I talk as a Healthcare professional (Pharmacist) that has had this several times post upper viral infections. My physician also gets this and we have tried several things to get rid of it and nothing works. As far as the adult onset diabetes, losing weight and exercise is the staple to try to reverse it. Good Luck! Move to a warmer climate so you can exercise year round outdoors 😂

A1C tells you if you are diabetic, normal people are 5.0, 6.5 is pre-diabetic and 7 and above is diabetes. With diabetes is a change of life style. And you have to see an Endocrinologist (diabetic specialist). Finger test is not a diagnosis, only a blood work has to be done, where the A1c is what tells you. The A1c shows your glucose(sugar) levels at a three-month interval. It is not just eating, its exercising, sleeping and whole change of doing things. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, they probably going to start you with some medications like, Metformin or insulin until it can be controlled. I am a diabetic since 1999 and know a little about diabetes. Lets pray and believe in the name of Jesus for healing and that everything comes out well.
