"In our quest to find new and better things, what you needed was something you already had". The words of the video's writer/director Warren Fu made me think of Tom himself.
Over the years it seemed like we looked for new artists and music, and that's when Tom would come back into our lives with yet another fantastic album filled with great songs.

Wildflowers was already Toms best. After listening many times now to All The Rest ...I’m feeling that this complete album becomes the GOAT. The songs are so deep & personal & moving. It’s just a perfect album. No filler songs. Even the alternate versions ( especially HARD ON ME with those added guitar notes) are just amazing .

Even after all these years it's still hard to watch things with Tom in it. This song was one of my favorites from All The Rest and my criteria for writing my own music is "make something almost as good as the stuff Tom never released" because even his unreleased songs and deep cuts are better than anything else I've ever heard.

    • @markb20
      @markb20 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

You must be pretty young, saying "even after all these years", referring to Tom's passing 3 years ago. To me I can't believe 3 years flew by like that, but at the same time Tom's absence in our lives feels like an eternity.

    • @stevenwilsonguitar

@@markb20 I know, it still blows my mind because I feel like I found out yesterday, I still remember what that day was like. It's a wonder how much things can change in three years. He's one of the reasons I picked up a guitar nearly ten years ago so it felt more like losing a friend than a musician.

OMG what a blow to humanity thaty he is gone from us. I still cry my eyes out whenever he crosses my mind because my big brother is gone. He always always always gave me hope and courage and laughter and I always knew that I would be okay. That's why I called him my big brother. I first saw him in 78 at the Lane county fairgrounds in Eugene Oregon in a little exhibition Hall with fold-out chairs. There was a big tall guy that let me sit on his shoulders and we were in the front row so I was eye level with TP. I was 15 years old. We walked to the concert and gave the bouncer a rose and that's how we got in. I was so blown away that I began to write songs after that. I did pretty well and I still write to this day. I moved to SoCal, and I've probably seen him in concert 200 times since then. The whole band was incredible. The loyalty and the glue that must be there to hold the band together for that many years and through all the life changes has to be the stuff dreams are made of. We all know that stuff rolls downhill. And it was a band it wasn't just Tom Petty and his band however, in a lot of ways, that downhill did start with TP, and what an example he set just by being himself, to everyone around him, and how close everybody was to him. Close like for life until the wheels fall off. That's an amazing thing for one person to have that effect on this band and then his family and then all of the other people he played with and all of the fans it just ripples out from the center and doesn't ever stop.
I love to read the comments in different things that I see posted especially since he's passed and it's amazing to me how many people... the sheer number of people who feel exactly the way I do!! He was like some type of a patron saint for the altruistic overlooked good hearted people.. for The Underdogs.. The Losers...
That song definitely helps me get through my adolescence, lol even the losers get lucky sometimes.
No matter how confident the world forces us to pretend to be, you know in order to get ahead you need to appear as if you're already ahead, right? So sometimes it's hard to gauge how many people have that innocent open vulnerable heart still beating underneath that facade.
I've been pleasantly surprised. Once again he has restored my faith in humanity, by virtue of the outpouring of love and the quality of love that everybody is expressing. I mean one man manifested that. That's incredible. That's a freaking miracle.
I Picture it in terms of him being like a beacon... Almost like a lighthouse for the losers... So that we could never get lost or forgotten.
(I only use that term to illustrate how cold and judgmental the world can be and how easy it is to put total strangers into two groups; the losers or the winners.)
I know for sure that the magnitude and the quality of love for him would make his spirit so complete and happy and while it's really hard to know how it works on the other side where he is now .. if I were to have one wish in the world and only one, it would be a wish that he is able to feel all of the things that people feel about him, the love they have for him.
I really love my generation that grew up with him and hearing stories about the effect he had in their lives. The courage he gave them the humor, the wisdom.. there are so many people who were suicidal that got through it just because of his music and his message that was woven through all of it.
    This video is awesome!
But my all-time favorite almost daily go-to, is 'keep a little soul' he always had one song like that on every album... The best of everything, don't have a wasted life, I'm too emotional to remember all of them but, no matter the mood or the feel or the theme of whatever the album there was always one song snuck in there that was like a tribute or a prayer in a way, usually to somebody out of reach or maybe somebody difficult, we all have people that are out of reach and we probably know it's best to keep them that way, but we all have moments when we just miss them and want the best for them no matter what water ran under the bridge. Anyways keep a little soul reminded me of one of those gems that he seemed to always make sure got put in an album. And the video, I'm not sure but I'm assuming the family and maybe the band was made after he passed and all of the clips are so precious! He was such a funny guy and so full of love and it's just amazing when you know the story of him growing up.. the general area, the whole feel of that time in history, his parents, he had to feel awkward he had to... but he had that light in him no matter what. it just seemed to have a love for the world and he knew that that was all you needed and when you see all those clips in that video, how in the world could you not see what a kind funny generous loving goofy happy guy this is??
It must have been amazing time full of laughter and tears maybe all at the same time, while they were looking through all the video to put that together. But that's why all-time favorite get me through the day 3 minute pep talk or however long the song and I'm so sorry for his family and I sure am grateful that they went through the archives and pulled out those clips.
A lot of people in this comments talk about the real grieving they went through and most are still going through. I can't even wrap my mind around how hard it must be for his family and for the band.
Like I have to repeat that I can't even believe how hard that must be.
When the director in this video talked about Adria describing what she wanted as far as reflecting her dad's quirky sense of humor, I realized how strong she must be and how brave and how terribly she must miss him. And I suddenly realized that she had to share her dad with the whole world. And as children were so self-centered, not in a bad way just naturally that's the face that children go through. And it would be really hard to share your dad with the whole world. So kudos to Adria and her sister and the whole family of course, for continuing to share him with the whole world.
That voice in my head (no just my thoughts I don't really hear voices haha) said "daaaamn, 'somebody' really raised her right!"
Well duh. Her dad was TP. Of course he did. He raised me right and he doesn't even know me.
BTW I'm 58 yrs old now. I've lived a good productive well-adjusted life, with a few little sidetracks but nothing I couldn't come back from.
I truly don't know what kind of person I would be today if his music and the example of the human being that he was, had not influenced me on a daily basis or damn close to it.
So thank you to all of the petties for sharing your dad your husband with the world. There's not enough words to express that and I have written way far too many. I'll be lucky if any body reads all this.
