During the Korean War, Korea lost all industrial facilities. All of them were destroyed. Like Africa, there was nothing. All the buildings were destroyed. It was education that such a country developed like this. And the reason why the people did well in that education is that Korea valued education for thousands of years.
as a Korean-American who grew up in Korea, this is the key in rapid development of Korea. Mothers pushing kids to excel in studies built the nation. Totally agree with ls_ppk.
It is true that Korea has made tremendous progress over the past 70 years, and there has been a history of 36 years of colonial rule, but there are 2,000 years of recorded history before that. It had a centralized state for nearly 500 years and was an advanced country with a systematic state system. Korea's current advancement is a return to the past, not growth from a zero base. Korea was the first country in the world to invent metal type and was an advanced country in the East that introduced advanced technology and culture from China. And South korea was located at the most important position to prepare for threats from communist countries, which could have Sk benefit most during cold war. Therefore, SK gained enormous financial support from us, and us capitalized on japan as well to supplement technological insufficiency of Sk with advanced technologies of japan. In the process of development, South korea also capitalized on the China market, which was heavily developing at the moment, in accordance with the development of South korea. Those factors are what attributes to korea's economic success
@deepestsleeep seems that you didn't understand my point. As you said, japan could return to a normal country, thanks to America. Then why did the US allow japan to become so? Because japan was only country with advanced technologies, economic growth-potent near to korea. But compared to Japan, South korea had nothing in terms of technology and economic volume. According to previous historical records, the current South Korea has simply returned to the South Korea before the war.. Some media mention Korean government and overlook the most important point.. South Korea's development is largely due to the sincerity and efforts of the Korean.. Korea's long history, culture, and national character are the factors for development..No matter how much the government makes social development plans, if the dedication and effort of the people and the capabilities of the people in all parts of the country do not follow, the country cannot develop and development will be slow.. Look at countries that were devastated by war or were economically poor in the past.. Even if the government led development, they could not develop as much as Korea
"According to previous historical records, the current South Korea has simply returned to the South Korea before the war." I'm a Korean and I should know some Korean history. Korea before the Korean War was a colony of Japan. The period of Korea having gotten its independence and the Korean War was only 5 years. I have no idea what you're suggesting here.
But before Japanese Occupation, when Korea was ruled by Choseon(朝鮮) Dynasty, Korea was agricultural state and the goverment suppressed commerce and overseas trade. While Qing China and Japan economically developed, Choseon remained agricultural state and became poorer due to corruption and commercial limit.
I studied Korean history a long time ago.. South Korea has achieved great development and democracy thanks to the sincerity, effort, and desire of the Korean people.. I respect and honor them.. Actually, most people only know Korea's 20th century history, but Korea is actually a country with a recorded history of more than 2,500 years. And it has a history of more than 4,000 years, considering legends. Korea has been a country with a fairly rich economy and culture throughout its history, except for the late Joseon Dynasty, the 20th century, and the period of great disaster. Particularly interesting to Korean history is the development of a centralized political system for a long time, which has solidified the state system. It is unique compared to Japan and a very stable and precise political system compared to any other country in the world at the same time. However, mistakes made in the late Joseon Dynasty and tragedies in the 20th century made Korea difficult, but they eventually showed the potential to reoccur in the 20th century

japanese imperialism and the korean war ravaged koreas economy in the 20th century, but people mistakenly view korea as always having been some poor primitive society that modernized out of nowhere. yes, it struggled immensely during japanese rule, but it had been a successful, innovative civilization for centuries before then. just look back at the various dynasties like joseon and goryeo that were so rich of history and culture. this miracle growth over the last few decades was possible because korea already had a longstanding culture of intense education and hard work founded upon confucian values. koreas prowess was simply able to showcase itself once again after imperialism ended

One thing that really surprised me when I went to bookstores in Japan was the fact that each bookstore has a separate section for hate books (books with content that hate Korea), and hate books are sold in huge numbers, The Japanese colonized Korea (1910-1945), looted, plundered, killed a lot of people, forced 200,000 young Korean girls to become sex slaves for the Japanese army, and brought 3 millions of Koreans to Japan to work as forced labor. It's shocking that people from the perpetrator country like books that hate, dislike, and condemn the victim country and its people. The irony of history is that Japan, the Axis power that committed countless such atrocities in Asian countries and pacific islands including Korea, eventually lost World War II in 1945, but the Korean War in 1950 led to a tremendous economic revival (factories were built in Japan to produce war supplies for the U.S. and U.N. troops), and the country has been prosperous ever since.😮

Since ancient times, the civilized countries of East Asia were China and the Korean Peninsula, and the only Asians who could make porcelain, an ancient semiconductor, were the Chinese, Koreans. Since China has been conquered by foreign peoples for over 3,000 years, it is unclear how much of China's history is Chinese, but the Han, Song, and Ming dynasties can be clearly seen as Chinese history. Ancient India, unlike today, had hundreds of kingdoms divided into, but it was definitely a civilized region that spread Buddhism, and Thailand and Cambodia were also centralized civilized countries ruled by kings. Although Japan received advanced civilization from the Korean Peninsula and China, Japan was an isolated island that had not been exposed to continental civilization until the 1400s, and when Portugal and Spain opened their ports, it was able to absorb Western civilization and awaken, and using that power, it invaded the Korean Peninsula, which had been a leading country for generations, and even dreamed of conquering China and India. I think the rapid changes in GDP of China, S.Korea, and India are the process of countries that had been wealthy civilized countries since ancient times but temporarily became impoverished after experiencing colonies and wars regaining their original positions.

According to Wikipedia's population of the world's countries in the 16th century(1500), Japan (Ashikaga) was 9th, and Korea (Joseon) was 10th. Since the population of pre-modern societies is based on productivity, we can see that Korea's (Joseon) economic ranking at that time was not much different from now. After that, Korea (Joseon) was invaded by Japan and China in the 17th century and went down the path of decline, and in the 20th century, it fell to the world's poorest country through the tragic history of Japanese invasion and colonial rule, the Korean War, etc. However, it can be understood that it overcame this in the 21st century because the legacy of 500 years ago remained.
South Korea is not a small country at all.. Small countries are countries with a population of less than 5 million.. Korea is just not large in area compared to its population. South Korea's population is over 51 million, which is in the middle 20th place among the 200 or so countries in the world. If South Korea were to go to Europe, it would be ranked 6~7th in population
No.. South Korea is not a small country. For example, countries like Singapore and Qatar are small countries. South Korea is ranked in the mid-20th place out of 240 countries in the world in terms of population. If it becomes one Korea later, it will have a population of 80 million. Now we're not talking about 'quality of individual lives', but about the economic power or industrial capacity of the country as a whole. Of course, true that there are many positive signs for sk as the center of global industry is shifting from manufacturing to the digital industry, and the turning point of 'unification of the korean peninsula' still remains. However, jp still has one of the most stable economic models in the world. Let's suppose what it would have been like if the great recession, also known as the "Lost 30 years," had occurred in sk or any other country. It would have been “national collapse” rather than “lost 30 years.” If sk truly wants to turn jp around, it should stop focusing on trivial indicators and focus on investing and nurturing talent in the digital industry. No realistic way other than turning the situation around through digital industries that have greater added value than manufacturing.
Korea has a small land area but a large population. This is also a source of strength. Among the 27 EU member states, only three countries have a larger population than Korea. Only seven EU member states have a larger population than Gyeonggi Province, the most populous local government in Korea. The fact that this large population has a very high level of education is its strength.
Korea has historically had a large number of knowledge-based personnel. During the Joseon Dynasty, people took the civil service examination to select bureaucrats. So people took the civil service examination from an early age by studying and teaching in each field. However, there were many restrictions because it was a Confucian culture. This historical knowledge tradition is still alive in modern society, which is one of the basic assets for Korea to grow rapidly.

It is true that Japan experienced extraordinary decline in terms of economy, population, international influence, innovation and technology, but it should be noted that this country was once a terrible war criminal who controlled parts of Asia and attacked Russia and America. It's funny to compare countries that are developing with countries that are in a phase of collapse. If we want to surpass Japan, do we have a mentality like Japan used to have?

Currently, the center of the global industry is shifting from the manufacturing industry to the digital industry. The value-added productivity of the manufacturing industry is at most around 10%, while that of the digital industry is at least 8% to as much as 10000%. In other words, is it something with value-added productivity close to 'infinite'. Japan is one of the oldest manufacturing powerhouses, along with germany and the uk. Their ancestors successfully achieved modernization and industrialization after the Industrial Revolution. They remain economic powers thanks to the legacy of their ancestors. In addition, manufacturing will exist until the day when humanity dies down. However, the manufacturing industry is also likely to be 'digitalized'. We can see it through the advent of electric vehicles. Germany, which is aware of this, is making big investment in the digital industry, but it’s not easy to make changes in reality. It‘s bcz average age of german is very high, and young talents in the digital field are leaving for the US. Japan is making similar efforts, but it’s also experiencing similar problems. On the other hand, sk has been investing in the digital industry for long time and is an asian country that has achieved the most successful 'digitalization'. Of course, they also have internal social problems such as 'population cliff' and 'aging', but there‘s tremendous turning point of 'peninsula unification' for them. This is not just a problem between jp and sk. If the existing manufacturing powerhouses do not succeed in the digital revolution, it’s foregone conclusion that they’ll be reversed by the rising “digital chasers”.

During the Korean War, Korea lost all industrial facilities. All of them were destroyed. Like Africa, there was nothing. All the buildings were destroyed. Because japan was only country with advanced technologies, economic growth-potent near to korea. But compared to Japan, South korea had nothing in terms of technology and economic volume. Therefore, US helped Sk by capitalizing on japan.

During Hideyoshi's invasion of Korea in the 16th century, total strength of the Japanese army at that time was 600,000 soldiers, and only a portion of them were sent to the small country of Korea. Approximately 150,000 Japanese troops captured Seoul in three weeks, and most of the cities, including Pyongyang, in two months, even though they were across the ocean, and captured the Korean prince. The pitiful king of China's vassal state ran away from the Japanese army in tears and sought help from his suzerain, his great father, the Ming Dynasty. This war was a battle between Japan, which had an emperor, and China, which had an emperor, and the small countries merely provided a stage for the great powers to dance

@@gooksuperuglyggreagregraeareg Let's talk about history. Before Baekje taught Yamato letters, the Japanese did not have a writing system until the 5th century, so they walked barefoot and ate food with their hands, according to the Sui Dynasty's historical records.

As a foreigner, I have been interested in and learned about Korean history and culture.. The focus is on South Korea since 70 years ago., but it does not seem to be that Korea is a country with 9,000 years of history and a long culture.. We must never overlook the fact that Korea’s development did not happen by accident, but was a force accumulated in various areas for a long time
According to Wikipedia's population of the world's countries in the 16th century(1500), Japan (Ashikaga) was 9th, and Korea (Joseon) was 10th.

Landmass wise, maybe. I would not call a nation of 52 millions small when there are only about 30 countries with over 50 million population.
@@kingjet6129 이게 맞긴하지. 아시아는 원래 인구가 많음
No.. South Korea is not a small country. For example, countries like Singapore and Qatar are small countries. South Korea is ranked in the mid-20th place out of 240 countries in the world in terms of population. If it becomes one Korea later, it will have a population of 80 million. It will probably be the next largest in Europe after Russia and Germany.

However, jp still has one of the most stable economic models in the world. Let's suppose what it would have been like if the great recession, also known as the "Lost 30 years," had occurred in sk or any other country. It would have been “national collapse” rather than “lost 30 years.”

It is true that Japan experienced extraordinary decline in terms of economy, population, international influence, innovation and technology, but it should be noted that this country was once a terrible war criminal who controlled parts of Asia and attacked Russia and America. Ik kpop and anime both are mainstream but still both niche, niche doesn’t mean it’s unknown or unpopular. But the difference is people in the west grew up with anime since they were young and had time to make anime look “cool” and now has 100k people in nyc anime event, even taylor swift can’t do that but its still “niche” if we’re being honest kpop is catching up anime a little tho, both are still niche

it just changed after the 18th century when Japan opened ports and traded with Europe and America first.

Japanese history only appears in East Asia after the Azuchi Momoyama Period in the 16th century.
Before that, there is a prevailing opinion in academia that it was not established as a monarchy or a nation :)
There are also Chinese historical data that Japan was composed of many small countries (tribes) during that period.
You may not know this from your Japanese history education, but Japanese history is not given much importance.
It's good to be proud of your country, but please don't turn a blind eye to historical facts.
@ttoEttoE Yeah, just another korean living in a fantasy world. The historical fact is that South korea was subordinate to china for about 1000 years, and the name of joseon was officially given and authorized by the China government, while China couldn't wield political control over japan since japan is too far from mainland of china.
@@ttoEttoE Isn't it because Korea was a vassal state of China? Before the 1500s, Japan simply avoided contact with the outside world. However, this allowed it to develop its own culture, including art, haiku, and Shintoism. In the 1200s, Japan also defeated the Mongol Empire twice. In the 1500s, Japan was the world's largest mass-producer of firearms, had ties with Spain, and invaded Korea and China. In the 1700s, "japonism" became popular in Europe, and Japanese culture, such as ukiyo-e, had a variety of influences on European artists such as Van Gogh.
What was Korea doing during that time?
This is a fact.

Some people can call president Park dictator, but, it’s true, however it’s true that he has developed south korea to get high economic level. That’s why I respect him very much.
The so called Park Chunghee dictatorship limited freedom of press and cracked down on any anti regime move. However, other areas of democracies did function anyway.
What is important is that citizens became richer and enjoyed high education under the regime. Park's so called dictatorship built a strong base of middle class citizens in Korea. It also built a huge base of heavy industry. The middle class and the heavy industry are the true backbones of today's democracy and prosperity in Korea.
