Just saw the Burning Sun BBC documentary and it answers so many questions about the South Korean government and society. Why on earth would a woman voluntarily bring life into a society where she is not respected, valued and protected? Where their perpetrators are let go with a slap on the wrist. Yeah, I'm not surprised to see the women in SK taking matters into their own hands for their survival.
They did for all of human history.... They WILL when societies protections and values disappear completely.

He was not the right person to conduct this interview, he is already biased, did not let her speak, obnoxious, and showing the same measly signs of a man who wants to lead a conversation but can’t. Didn’t even ask the right questions either.
Looks like you don't see interviews often... I agree that he interrupted a bit much earlier in the interview but the person conducting a time limited interview has to lead it and move it from topic to topic, which always requires interruptions, also for clarification, guy is not great but feels like your comment is the bias thing here, women interviewing use the same techniques, are they showing measly signs of a woman who wants to lead a conversation but can't?
Like it or not, this is how dialogue works. Someone who is ignorant and is *eager* to understand and someone who is speaking in generalities and niche references that *need* further explanation so there is no mistranslation. Of course, he's going to ask pointed questions so he's in-the-know and up to speed on all these correlating topics.
I came here looking for what the 4B's mean and I learned about declining populations in the Koreas, a stabbing incident, and several political movements but not what "4B's" literally means. 😂 Without interjection and mediation, we veer off topic very easily in conversation or debate.

As soon as you start using words like 'radical' and 'extreme' (which the interviewer annoyingly does from the very beginning) you are showing your own bias, loading the debate and lose any pretence to objectivity. A woman wanting to make decisions about her own life is not a radical extremist.

I know he makes it so cheap, this whole interview is an insult to brave women, who at a time held or still hold views that are yes, a bit tight, but it was a beginning, also, he talks about her friend, we do not know the context of that conversation. Maybe they talk about having sex with her boyfriend while still studying, but I think that would be wrong to do, bc that would out you in risk of not finishing your career due to pregnancy or due to being murdered by a physcho, who knows how that conversation really went. I’m married, but I married into my 30’s and I think marriage truly stinks, marriage is a financial entity and this is the BASIS of what marriage is, the one person who makes ALL THIS POSSIBLE IS THE WOMAN in the marriage, this is one of the reasons why many societies did not want to accept gay marriages, bc from the financial point of view, without children in it, without the traditional EXPLOITATION OF WOMEN within marriages, it will not work as it has always been. Men are leeches and we women provide the blood, so no wonder leeches want women to stay available as easy prey forever. I say, if you are young, try to have sex in the safest possible way, but if you can, DO NOT HAVE SEX, DO NOT MARRY AND DO HAVE CHILDREN, specially until you have your own money, your career and you have reached your goals. Do not take the pill and sleep around, you might have some “fun” but in the long run, men are just leeches, they TAKE MORE THAN THEY GIVE in such situation, and in marriage too, so, truly, if you can, avoid all of the above, but for this to work well for women, we need more and more women on board, of course each should be FREE to do whatever fits them, including having as much sex as each want, getting married and having hopefully zero kids or just a few, bc the world has not resources for so many humans, but the better way is for a young woman, to no have sex (maybe only make love if you find the right person to make love with, which is difficult again, bc men are leeches and to make love, you need to GIVE, but many men only know how to TAKE) the better way for a single woman is to have no children and the better way for a married women is to have no children or very very few in any case. @@debodatta7398 I've listened to more korean girls and they've all said it's a very small percentage of women who act radical like that. You'd probably find the same percentage in any other random country. Although I agree with you that Koreans in general shifted towards western (US) mindset in many things, like having tattoos for example, but I think it's gonna be the same as with this 4B movement and it is temporary and people will grow out of this phase like she said.. seems very likely to me at this point. Especially when US will lose the dominance it had and instead people will focus more on China.

When those personal choices go against what has been common throughout human history (marriage, starting a family etc) it would be considered radical. However, using the term radical should not necessarily have negative connotations attached to it as you have suggested. The interviewee herself even agrees with him and labels these people as radical and extremists. Making choices for yourself does not automatically make it not radical. The people who ran planes into the twin towers did so as a personal choice/belief system, yet they are considered radicals. The people fighting for civil rights during the 60’s in the US were also labeled radicals, yet they were “good” radicals don’t you think? Yet they were only radicals/extremists because they went against societies norms at the time. I think your automatic assumption of the negative connotations with the word radical says more about it yourself than the person (interviewer) you’re attacking here. BTW, i agree with you that it is a personal choice and no one else should have a say in what these women decide to do with regards to sex, marriage, childbirth etc, yet I also see how this is in fact a radical movement.
@@Archchill I can agree with you in the context of chosen nomenclature. Yes, radical is defined as "different from the usual or traditional" but also as "extreme". I have a very hard time believing that those using the term "radical feminist" are not meaning it in a derisive or condescending way. It is often used to dismiss beliefs and equate them with destructive ideology. I could fully see this being a translation issue, since the negative connotation of the word may not properly be communicated.

I’m disappointed in this interview. It felt like a complete disparagement of feminism and the real dangers of misogyny in Korea. I live in Seoul and can safely say misogyny is still going strong here. Though the more radical aspects of the gender wars have died down, misogyny is nowhere near fixed or even better in any real way
I agree the journalist is not being critical enough of the situation and concentrating on her own narrative. Maybe they shld have done a bit more research. The birthrate is still plummeting whether or not you acknowledge the 4B movement.

If that was anything close to being true, there would not be 4 times more Korean men leaving the country and renouncing their citizenship than Korean women. Misandry is far more common and widely accepted in South Korea.

i lost my respect to the interviewer. i'm only 5 minutes into the video and i'm already annoyed at how you keep cutting her words and starting the interview with an already biased view by saying this is a radical movement, before you even heard what the journalist had to explain thoroughly from her side especially as a woman herself. even if you have your own stance, as an interviewer you should've been positioning yourself with a neutral stance in order to bring the topic fairly to the global audiences. i went to read the comments and it seems like i'm not the only one who has this problem.
Maybe, his stance is neural, because he already knows a lot of the essence about the 4B. but he is forced not to reveal the truth. She was just saying what appears in the surface of the matter. What matters is the topic not to be said.

As a journalist and a founder of a media platform, using 'radical' or 'extremist' to describe the feminist movements mentioned in the video seems extremely unprofessional in the global sense.... while the interview as a whole seemed unbiased and informational, words like these usually give the situation a negative connotation.

The constant interruptions of your guest, the immediate (and prevalent) use of a loaded term like "radical", and the non-stop changing direction and tangents breaking the flow of the conversation was frustrating. I feel like I didn't learn anything from this interview. I know you can do better, this was not it.

I don't see anything wrong with the way he interrupted her. Most of the time he did it was to ask her questions so that the audience understands better the context
He did it while she was in the middle of explaining and he often changed the focus.
For instance, at 4:42 she is explaining herself and says “I think they” and he goes on to “so they caught him”. This is dismissing her thought process and not allowing her to develop more on her thoughts.
It is also a new piece of info he is looking for while she is still explaining her previous answer.
This happens several times. It’s not just the normal interview interruptions for clarification and to keep things on topic. It’s an urge to rush her.
I’ve seen him do this a few times and the last time was to another Asian woman as well. Just an observation.

From my understanding, women in Korea rarely openly say they support the 4B movement because of safety. It is such a shame the opportunity for the society to change and become safer was ignored and instead the young men became radicalised to the right. The 4B movement is pushing against the social pressures and norms that in large part driven by males expectations in patriarchal societies. There was a twitter/X thread from a Korean woman that went viral around the time this video was uploaded I think, and it said not to believe what men says about the 4B movement, and that Korean women would be afraid to talk even slightly positively about the movement, in fear of being branded as a feminist, which in current times in Korea means that it would put a target on her.
The news linked in the thread alongside the misogynistic firing & targeted harrasment of women in the Korean games industry that I knew about beforehand + molka + the recent news of men from the burning sun scandal walking freely right now makes me think that South Korea actually has so many issues that make women there feel unsafe. I genuinely can understand if they support this movement based on those information.

This episode has put me off Asian Boss completely. This host is so biased, the hints and steering the conversation in a quite anti-feminist direction. Movements don't grow out of the fringe unless large groups see some truth in them. It's the broader fundamental issues of inequality that resonate with the majority that gives movements momentum.

In lot of the comments here, people wrote he was interrupting her, which I didn't find to be a major thing after watching the video. It's very cheap of him (and her too, for agreeing with him) to assume the driver of this movement is donation and money.

Some people were experimenting with distributing UBS (universal basic income) to all the adults of some villages modelled for an experiment, and the result showed an increased focus on education, health care, children care and yes, women's emancipation in terms of separation from men and in-laws and divorce. Immediately after that the researchers were stopped from circulating the experiment to public because the powerful men don't want their wives to divorce them and in general, they don't want women to be financially independent starting from their adulthood, so they stopped the process even if UBS could have liberated everyone, men, women.
Another incident I know is a spiritual movement where women who didn't want to marry were encourage to come to a shelter and choose a life of spirituality away from men, away from the expectations of marriage, motherhood, domestic, sexual, emotional labor under the patriarchal system. A violent mob literally broke those shelters, beat the women there and file cases in the courts.
So yeah, mainstream and not-so-mainstream media are only out there witch-hunting a movement like 4B. It's the women in social media that try hard to spread the news to other women in need.

As a Korean-American woman, I would never apologize for being a “radical” feminist. If I was living in S. Korea, I’d definitely fit the “4B” description. Yes I’m into K-beauty (especially skincare), and I like to dress in a feminine way. However, it’s for myself, not to attract men. Also, true feminism is about gender equality, not hating men. Even in the U.S., there is a gender wage gap. Globally, there are too many women and young girls who are mistreated (abused, assaulted, raped, etc.) or even killed for superficial reasons by men. To be fair towards the women of South Korea, and as well as most of the nations of this world, many women have suffered extreme marginalization at the hands of men. There have been many men out there who see women a second class citizens, which in my opinion is horrifying and inexcusable. When you push hard, the pushback will even be harder. I have two daughters over the age of 20 they are not South Korean although they are of Asian descent. They have healthy relationships with their boyfriends, but I do see the trend of where a lot of women say don’t want to date any longer and I understandable and there are even some menin a red pill movement who are walking away from dating as well

Generalizing an entire country when it's still one of the safest just makes you look weak and narrow-minded. No country will ever be perfect and it's sad a lot of young women don't realize that.
