I did this camp back in late 2000 and the one thing I recall most vividly is the ever-increasing feeling of the Sunken Cost Fallacy. It got to a point of physical discomfort every time his PHer would spawn... yet again! I said to myself dozens of times "If he doesn't spawn on this cycle I am going to leave." and the next PHer would spawn and I just COULDN'T let him go because I would imagine the next guy coming in, killing the PHer and getting my multi-day prize in a single go... and I just could NOT let that happen! In the end it took me about 32 hours to get it and by the time I got my idol, I didn't even want to continue the rest of the quest. It was probably two weeks before I started my Robe of the Whistling Fist camps. Those are a story all of their own. I got super lucky on Pawbuster because I got it during an XP camp, but Iksar Betrayer took another 30ish hours to get him, but I did that camp in like 3-6 hour intervals.
Anyway, this was a genuine blast from the past, and though I absolutely despised this quest, I look back on it all with great fondness. Thanks for the video!

ooo yeah that's why I couldn't leave I felt like if I ran the camp this long statistically I was due every PH lol.

Pained Soul in Trak's Teeth for the Veeshan's Peak key. My guild was racing another guild to VP and that entire key is full of horrific camps. I spent five days camping Pained Soul before handing the camp to another guildie. My circumstances weren't as bad as yours (I fancied joining Afterlife and they required ISDN at a minimum so I sprung for DSL at $106.48 per month. JUST FOR INTERNET. Yeah, I remember how much. I still have copies of some bills from back then as a reminder to not be such an idiot) but I had to get that drop for two characters. I was a 58 warrior and I brought my baby 42 rogue and I had access to the guild's #1 cleric (60) so the camp wasn't difficult in and of itself. It was just time consuming. I got her drop first (a day and a half) and spent the rest of the time waiting on mine. I also had a Pepsi IV though mine had a little spritz of Captain Morgan mixed in. Staying up wasn't that much of a problem since I developed a method from my Navy stint (lots of No-Doz and Vivarin, I could do a balls to balls shift np, especially in port).

Hell, yeah. I'm all in on a whole series of these. 🍿 😎
Edit: Holy shit. In 2001 on The Rathe server, I spent 3 days + an unknown number of hours in Najena, camping Drelzna for the Jboots on the final weekend before they'd be removed from her loot table and made quest-only.
I started on the list, worked my way up to #6 (at which point I was finally able to join the actual group at her spawn point), and went from a Level 14 DE Shadowknight to Level 17 just on that room's spawn cycle alone. The drops were slow, we got more and more irritable as the deadline for servers coming down neared, and finally I was in the #1 spot and they dropped...only for the guy in the #2 spot to ninja-loot them and run off. Turned out everyone else had decided, without telling me, that my level was "too low to really contribute" DPS, in spite of there being plenty of DPS with everyone else being 30+, so they'd just decided to skip me without actually telling me and giving me the option to stay for XP or just leave.
Filled with a righteous moral umbrage, I took off and told my tale of scandalous betrayal, asked if there was anyone willing to help a Knight of Innoruuk teach these upstarts what REAL betrayal was, and went back inside with a Level 45 DE Magician who walked into the room just as Drelzna spawned and promptly 1-shot her with a single nuke. Since I was in a group with him, I got the loot rights, and whaddya know? She had the Jboots on her.
Those were the last to drop on the server before they came down for the patch, and those miserable ass clowns wasted the remaining 6 hours in a fruitless attempt to get another to drop. To this day, I still cackle over their spluttering outrage that someone dared feed them their own medicine.
To that Mage, whose name I have since forgotten: Vesanus still has those boots. Thank you, my friend. 🥲

lol, I think we all have similar tales around that time... One of my classics was camping the Ancient Cyclops for 40+ hours with similar underpowered gear / characters - when it did eventually spawn, it was a super hard kill, kiting adds, the works. EQ is still the best game of all time IMHO.

My guildies used to send me to OOT because I've never had an AC camp last more than 6 hours. They HATED that. I remember getting stomped by an AC in SRo when I was a little necro, just chasing after some spiders (lost my corpse, rerolled warrior). After that, I was more than happy to stomp a mudhole in his arse and walk it dry.

@@Remianen yea, once I reached level 60, I had several AC spawn in SRO while wandering through (god bless tracking!) - I multi-quested the ring several times for mucho plat! :)

Needed some undead thing for the pally epic, can’t remember now, only did that horrible quest once.
Spent the whole night at the spawn point, killing PH. Was watching TV on the side. Night turns to morning and no named. Morning turns to afternoon and no named. Night time comes, marking the 24 hour point, and just placeholders.
Another pally comes by and we chat for a bit. I’m too tired to continue so I give him the camp.
I go to sleep for like 14 hours, wake up, shower, have breakfast at 6:00 in the afternoon, don’t know what day of the week it is.
Jump on EQ and the same guy from before is still there. No spawn for him either. He gives up and I get the camp back.
I keep the camp into the night, again watching TV on the side to maintain some semblance of sanity. Placeholder after placeholder.
Sun starts coming up and my new pally cohort logs on. Still no named. We chat for a while and finally the damn named pops.
He helps me kill it and I get my item. I stick around for a bit and the very next spawn was the named again. He gets his piece and we both rejoice in completing yet another bottleneck of this wretched and mostly useless epic.
I started Friday and ended around Tuesday I think. Took a few days to get back into a normal schedule.
This was during the Velious expansion. It took until GoD to complete my pally epic. They changed the game around the Luclin era so that you couldn’t attack Vox or Naggy unless you were level 52 or below. A handful of guildies started new toon and power leveled them to 52. We level locked them around 50% in and went full AA. We twinked the crap out of them just for the purpose of killing Vox/Naggy. After a few failed attempts, were able to do this with three special level 52’s and some secret strats. That’s the only way we could get those epic pieces without spending jillions of plat.
Took a screen shot of my pally on his mount, flaming sword in hand, and camped out of EQ forever. Played EQ2 for the next 6 years until I quit that game. Now I play either game occasionally when a new TLP comes up. The only epic I’ll do is the cleric epic, if I’m Guilded and if they help me.

I remember that vox change I just did the pally epic like over a year ago on mischief prollu somewhat different now it’s nice to have someone to share your misery with and then for both of you to get your spawn that’s awesome

Back when I started in 2001 playing a troll in Grobb, being very new to the game I fell into a lava pond and burned to death. I had a bit of gear going plus a rare twink haste sword a friend let me borrow but was going to eventually want back. My corpse was too deep into the pool to loot it from a safe spot. The only idea I could come up with to getting my gear would be to jump in, loot what I could, then get out but I was taking damage too quickly and would die every attempt. After hours of dozens of attempts where I leveled down quite a bit, I came to terms that it was impossible, I wasn't going to get my items back and that I lost my friends sword. When I went to explain to him what had happened he told me that there was a /corpse command that moves to position of your corpse to where you are currently standing, which I was unaware of and would have saved me all this trouble. So I used it and got everything back right away. The game could be quite punishing if you were unaware of simple mechanics which back then did not do a good job of explaining.

Oh wow that's a good tale of unnecessary torture, I was trying to figure out if the /corpse command didn't exist at some point as I started reading it lol

ShowEQ was a thing in 2001. I was working at SOE at the time and we tracked people for it.
By far the worst of the camps was Ragefire. Every 3 days, I'd have to negotiate 11 servers of camp disputes which basically came down to "resolve it yourselves" because that was policy. I rejoiced the day that Akil moved that spawn to Skyfire and made it a triggered turn-in event.

    • @vanman2099
      @vanman2099  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I always felt like people were tracking things a little too fast back then

@@vanman2099 They may have removed it by now especially with the TLP Hate revamp but Hate used to have 100's of hidden mobs that had names like "SHOWEQ Sucks". That was certainly around during the Kunark/Velious era.

I waited to do a monk until Rizlona. I started on Aradune but could never log in. So I went full blown Rizlona as a single box player. It was a win/win for me since the boxers do not like pulling. However, I was constantly killed steal for Raster. This is the absolute worst camp I have done since VP key pieces.
