Another way to preserve it for the whole year or more is chop it up with a little water to what consistency you want. Pour it out on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. Spread it out evenly and put it in the freezer. It does not take long to freeze. Once frozen, break it up into chunks and place in ziploc bag. Keep it in the freezer. It does not stick together.
Cilantro in ice cube trays with lime or lemon juice is the way i do it. All recipes that I use cilantro for (Salsa, Pico de Galo, Guacamole, etc...) call for lime/lemon anyways.
When I put fresh cilantro in the crisper, I take it out of the bag, and wrap it in paper towels (because I don't have any growing!) The paper absorbs that excess moisture, and lets me keep it for at least a week.
We usually let a few plants go to seed and save those for use as coriander (and to reseed next year). They store very well once dry, and I just keep some in a little pepper mill for use as a spice.
Great idea with the mill! And yes I also let some go to seed every year some are dried and saved and some fall to the ground, to the point now that I don't even have to replant it!
I was amazed that the cilantro made it thru the freeze this Feb. Thanks for sharing the great ideas for preserving. I think I will do a version of the cilantro pesto but use butter instead of oil and put it in mini silicon molds and then freeze. This way I should have some delicious cilantro infused butter to put on freshly grilled steak or chicken breasts.
For me, appreciating the whole plant is important: I harvest leaves, and when they bolt, I harvest seeds! The seeds are a great ingredient in sauces (curry) and are very healthy. Great video.
We place the cut branches in a glass container with bit of water, cover with a clear bag over it and place it inside of door of refrigerator...lasts for a month...same with parsley
I am growing cilantro for making a Spanish base sauce called Sofrito! It will be my version of Sofrito to include the cilantro! I always harvest the coriander and keep that also as a spice and seeds. Thank you for showing other ways of preserving this wonderful herb!
Hi Scott, fresh cilantro lasts me for a week if the leafy stems are arranged like flowers 💐 standing up in a small jar with a few inches of water. I do wash, then dry it in a salad spinner beforehand so it's ready to use. I keep the jar on my counter or on a shelf in the fridge. Every day or so, I trim the stem ends about 1/4" and change the water. This works with parsley and dill as well. Love your idea of preparing it like pesto to add to nearly any recipe. Thanks Scott, always appreciate your videos.
That paste looks yummy! You've inspired me to make fish tacos tonight. No fresh cilantro yet as I'm in Ohio and it's still snowing, but I do have some from last year that I've freeze dried. Thanks for another great learning video Scott! 🌱🌱🌱
I've been freezing my cilantro the past couple of weeks. I just found a recipe for Zhoug, a spicy cilantro sauce. Similar to yours with oil with the addition of jalapeños and seasoning. I'll make that with the next batch I harvest.
I just have to thank you for the cilantro storage tip. So far the cilantro looks fresh and happy at just over a week. I used to store it in a jar of water in the frig! As a 7th gen Texan and avid chef I am ashamed LOL. Thanks again Scott :)
Fish tacos are now on my list of things to eat this weekend!! My cilantro is half a zone behind yours here in NW Houston. Happy Super Early Spring! NOT. I have some tomato and pepper starts that are still small. I hope Spring lasts awhile and Summer doesn't heat up as fast as it did last year. Say a prayer! Amen ... So be it!!
Last week+ I took some Daikon radishes, cilantro, and lime zest to ferment. It is a Vietnamese ferment that is used as a side for Pho, but can be used in other ways. The ferment has a nice flavor profile, but I got mine a bit saltier than it should be.
This is my first year for growing cilantro. THANK you for this much needed video about storing it! I would love to see more of your videos about preserving and storing other herbs for winter use. How is Sam doing? I liked seeing him in your earlier videos. I'm sure he's growing into a very nice young man by now.
Sam's doing great, he's growing for sure and I can hear him playing his guitar even as I type. He'll occasionally help out in the garden these days but he's got into music and has a heavy high school level work load these days. He's a great kid.
Like a cilantro pesto 👍 These are great ideas, this is my first season adding cilantro to my herb garden so hopefully I'll be successful and this video will be revisited 😁
Very cool Scott, and so useful! I always waste so much cilantro when it goes to bolt because I never get around to doing this, but I definitely will this year. I even have that exact mini food processor. 😁 Thanks so much.
Great ideas, Scott. I too, love and grow cilantro. My stepdaughter taught me to store washed and dried cilantro in the fridge upright in a small jar partially filled with water (like a bouquet of flowers) to allow the stems to draw moisture. If I need to store it for a few more days, I trim the ends of the stems and change the water. I've been able to keep fresh cilantro for over a week. I also use this method for dill and parsley. BTW: if you add a little wine vinegar and green onion to your cilantro in oil, you will have a lovely chimmichuri sauce, which is delicious on everything! Especially chicken, fish and beef!
This was a fantastic video. The only add I have is that refrigerators are designed to keep the box humid, so I wouldn't recommend refrigerator storage ever for cilantro. 100% freezer because they actually have a dehumidifier in them to prevent iceing build up. That said. I'm going to experiment with a low temp on my dehydrator and get as much moisture out without cooking and freeze after. Wish me luck!
Love this! I also use cilantro stems in my cooking - because, why not? They chop and grind up just wonderfully in pesto's and sauces. No waste of flavor.
Wow , another grate ways to preserve cilantro..I always let the air dry and it keeps its taste and I use it for recipes it calls for . Awesome to know other ways !
I just bought some seeds! Thanks for the recommendation. The seller also had seeds for a Peruvian herb called Huacatay and I got some of those too to try.
Thank you! I was looking for a way to preserve mine and found your video! i really appriate you sharing this information with us! this was very valuable!!!!
This is such great information, thank you! By the time I have my salsa ingredients, my cilantro is long gone. I'm going to try saving some for the height of summer.
Cilantro is the worse thing dryed, found that out, the cilantro at the store that's already wrapped last way longer than the loose variety found that out to.
Thanks for the video! I love cilantro juice, so freezing it is a good option I did not consider. I will try it. Now, about the seeds...It's not that they will produce a different plant. The seed will produce more cilantro, correct? Cilantro is the Spanish word for coriander but in the video, it appears to indicate that they will produce a different plant.
@@ScottHead I stuff my poblano peppers!!! First time planting the Anaheim, do you just use them like bell peppers??? I saved poblano seeds to plant but I don't know what else they can be used for?? TIA
@Scott Head I roast Anaheim peppers & tomatoes, peel them, then saute them in olive oil, a handful of black dry pitted olives, garlic, salt, and pepper. Delicious on warm pita bread or French baguette.
My cilantro lasted a couple weeks then died. I was able to get some. No seeds developed. Had quite a bit of rain. When I was finally able to get out to the garden it was down to a single brown dead stem. Did I do something wrong?

I did this with cilantro and dill

That’s genius except I feel like you would need a lot of lime juice

This is a great idea! I do this with green onions, but I never thought about it for dill, parsley, and cilantro! Good tip, thanks!
I do the same and have been able to keep it for 3 weeks! I have even done it with the stuff you get in a bunch at the grocery.
I also put it in a jar with water but do not wash them. I put it on the door part of the refrigerator and the cilantro lasts for more than 2 weeks.
Thank you for the tips. Overlooking my envy from CO that you get to garden this time of year.

Me too! Love fresh cilantro, had it on chicken tortilla soup the last 2 nights. Sooo good! Got to enjoy it fresh before the heat kicks up more.

Have you heard of the Mexican herb papalo? I grow it through the summer as a substitute for cilantro. Tastes great in tacos, salsa etc
I grew this for the first time last year and loved it. I will definitely grow again.

I do the same sauce & freeze in ice cubes. Once frozen input in ziploc bags. You can also stick yr cilantro bunch in water in a mason jar for a week.
One of the best herbs. I can eat so much Cilantro in one sitting.
Thank you. I will be trying this. Especially with my basil. Love it

I enjoy learning and you have given me such valuable information. Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊. Lady Bell
I love taste and flavor when it starts bolting. I let my cilantro bolt all the time. I like the ferny leaves. Flavor is more intense.
Love this video!! I hope you keep showing videos of how you use your produce!
I love cilantro.. mine always goes bad fast so loved the whole show on this topic
I’ve seen people place the stems in water like a flower vase to extend the plant while refrigerated, like you can with Asparagus or others.
I eat every stage of cilantro the bitterness is actually good for you the flowers are really strong but i like it 😅
CIlantro and onion on tacos is very popular. Might be neat as a pesto!
I just harvest choke seeds from my Cil. I already seeded them.
Wonderful video detailed and the facts of preserving that I just learned about. Thank you for sharing this.

Have you ever added lime juice to your puree? I absolutely love the two flavors together. I just wondered how the 2 froze in oil.
The oil froze quite well, just used the last of it yesterday. The cilantro wrapped in paper seemed to be fresh and good 4 weeks later.
Suggest using lemon juice over vinegar.

Coreander and Coreander seed as we call it in Europe. He did use both names for this plant.
Thank you for your video❤🙏
What if we rinse off the herbs in the garden a few hours prior to harvesting it to give it time to dry?
Yeah that works.
I was think to make it and add to dress for green salad etc..
Thanks neighbor!! Quick question: is now a good time to put tomatoes out in the garden?
Yes, we are safe from frosts. Got some out in my garden last week.
@@ScottHead thank you 🙏🏽
Great vid! Thx!
So this is what we cal Corainder is that right?>
Yes, the seed is corriander.
Is that a single plant? It looks so big .
I think it was two plants.
Mine don’t grow like that and I really need a lots of it 😢I am so jealous of your’s
It grows well if planted where roots can spread. Not in a small container.
Don't put too many seeds together
I've a lot of mints in my garden; they grow like weed. What can I do with them besides making tea or drying the leaves and use them in dishes.
I don't care for mint so I really don't know. Sorry I don't have an answer.
@@ScottHead Thanks.
We make strawberry mint lemonade and also mint ice cream would be good.
@Lisa the Gardening Geek thanks for these great tips. I do prefer lemonade instead of ice cream.
Garnish them on vanilla ice cream
What type of cilantro seeds you plant?
The misters help weigh the produce down so you pay more.

Sorry you said it already.

Can u transplant cilantro to make new plants
It's difficult, but doable
great ways to preserve it but cilantro is by far the worse herb on earth! just my opinion.
For some reason ... about 10-15 % of people find it tastes awful. I have a friend who says it tastes like soap. I feel so sad for you!!
I've never been a fan of cilantro either but oddly I like ans use coriander 😆
@@Katydidit well for me it tasts like raw tylenol!nasty
