I'm on the autism spectrum and wearing a mask was quite difficult for me. I don't do well with constrictive clothing. The first few weeks were hell, but I worked it out and eventually was able to tolerate the sensory issues.
Having this condition and being on disability is a daily struggle. Even so, I'm doing my part to help keep myself and the public safe. If I can do that, you most likely can too. We're all in this together.
Unexpected caveat: this is one of the few times you can go into a bank or store with a gaiter or bandana mask and nobody will think you're going to rob the place. ^^
    Stay safe out there.

I've found that breathing my own CO2 has made anxiety attacks a fair amount more likely. I have to pay attention to when my hands start to fall asleep and sit down to catch my breath.
I'm glad that much of the time I've been spending out of the house is in the wilderness with no other people around so I can get fresh air without needing a mask. That's been incredibly good for my overall wellbeing this year.

    • @darkcobrabws
      @darkcobrabws 4 ปีที่แล้ว +25

@@CFSworks You might want to have some self exposure therapy to help with the psychosomatic effect on your anxiety to wearing a mask. You dont actually breath your own CO2, they've done some testing and the CO2 levels dont change from wearing a mask. That being said, since having anything on your face is a foreign feeling and we're programmed as human beings to be overly protective of our head the same way you blink or bounce back when someone pretends to throw something at you, wearing a mask can trigger a panic attack simply from being on your face. There is, thankfully, a way around this; while at home, watching tv for example, wear a mask for 30 seconds then remove it, when you've calmed down and feel ready, wear it again for a minute. Go up until you hit the 15-30 minutes mark. If you ever feel anxious, control your breathing, keep it deep and slow. This works with everything that causes panic attack. Exposure therapy is not fun, by any means, it shouldnt be but its efficient and necessary to take back control of your life over panic attacks

As an autistic person (and someone who was in the hospital twice with COVID-19), I appreciate how you respectfully discuss autism as it relates to sensory issues and the law.
I’ve been able to make my own accommodation by designing a sensory friendly face mask for myself (that also provides protective coverage). However, I know autistic people for whom wearing a face mask is simply not possible. The ironic thing is that all of them support face mask requirements.
Earlier in the pandemic, it was easier for disabled people and businesses to work together to find creative approaches to accommodations which kept everyone safe and prevented the spread of COVID-19. Yet, with so many non-disabled people claiming exemption ‘due to the ADA’ businesses become skeptical and it becomes harder for disabled people to have their needs taken seriously. As such, certain approaches which previously provided accommodation begins to dwindle.
When non-disabled people skirt the law and attempt to use the ADA as shield for their personal choices, it limits the participation of disabled people in society. This is something that disabled people often have to contend with, but it is a particular challenge in this period of COVID-19.
    Thanks for an excellent video.

Yes! As a disabled person who does struggle with wearing a mask (and who has had to manage to figure out how to do so), I also wish that the complete and utter failure of our societal institutions didn't make all of this even more difficult. A functioning society would be providing us with a wide range of protective devices (not just one kind of cloth mask), some of which are really much easier to use comfortably for people with certain disabilities. We'd also be able to talk freely about why it's difficult and uncomfortable to mask up, and how it's okay to feel that way, even though we have to do it. The "but my rights" people make this kind of adult, nuanced discussion impossible. Ugh.

And even my cousin who has a more severe form and can't do that reasoning for himself understands, with reminders, that this is just what we're doing now, it's important, and we can take them off in a few minutes when we're back outside.

As a person who actually has a real disability (I'm an amputee) it is *EXTREMELY* offensive to see people faking a disability to get special treatment.
People with disabilities by definition, are at a disadvantage. The ADA is about compensating for those disadvantages.. It's not about getting special treatment. It is about making a difficult situation a bit easier to deal with.

    • @iluvdissheet
      @iluvdissheet 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

YES! I've worked in HR for over 15 years so I am very familiar with the ADA and I share your offensive.
In my experience, people who have permanent disabilities rarely ask for accommodations. The ADA has been a part of employment long enough that most businesses already incoporate the accommodations. For those who had a rare or non-physical disability, they had no problem asking for an accommodation upfront. Majority of the requests I received were for employees with a short-term disability (surgery, pregnancy, etc) in which the accommodation was needed for a limited time. You could literally see the light bulbs above some employees heads feeling that someone was getting "special treatment".
At first, people would outwardly ask why someone is getting special treatment. Then, they figured out how to exploit the system. I've had people claim non-physical disabilities with fraudulent dr notes, fake pregnancy and accuse me of discrimination because I require paperwork and didn't just believe them.
I know that everyone wants a level or fair field and because of confidentiality don't understand that the ADA was created to ensure that. Its when people mistake an accommodation for entitlement that just pisses me off! To weaponize the ADA for selfish reasons (like wearing a mask), really makes me wonder if people understand what "Freedom" means and that it applies to everyone.

I have athletes that are not able to wear masks at all due to their individual needs, but they take advantage of the accommodations businesses offer as well as family members shopping on their behalf. It honestly pisses me off when people are using ADA as an excuse. Especially when they try to quote the law and have no idea what they are saying. Lucky for me, since my degree is in special education and with my brother, I have studied ADA pretty intensely (Probably not nearly as much as a lawyer, but I know enough) and I was able to quote title 2 when a person tried to enter the university I work at without a mask.

Bonus points: she was the daughter of one of my coworkers, so we knew she was full of BS. Eventually, the store manager gave her the ultimatum that she was to wear a mask or leave the store, and he gave my coworker an earful for allowing her daughter to skirt the rules.

Jesus said loving others takes priority over all but one other law, and considered healing the sick to be a priority even when it infringed on certain Jewish laws. Jesus never tried to use technicalities of the law to avoid minor discomfort or inconvenience to Himself... quite, quite the opposite.
If you are a Christian, for the love of God - not blasphemy, I mean it literally - wear a mask if and when advised by your local authorities and any other times it seems sensible to do so.
EDIT: it's been pointed out that the person in that clip was a comedian. But there are supposed Christians saying this sort of thing, so my point stands.

Growing up with a hearing loss and actually falling under the ADA's protections (being placed up front in a classroom), I can assure you, being able to express your rights under the ADA is HELL. I and my parents frequently butted heads with teachers who claimed me being up front all year gave me an unfair advantage over other students with normal hearing (it didn't), or that having me assigned up front when they normally scramble seats at regular intervals went against their classroom policies (doesn't matter). All these Karens and Florida Men trying to use the ADA to be allowed to be a disease vector is both hilarious and infuriating.
But it's also hilarious to see how fast the masks go up when I turn away from people and violently fake-cough into my elbow.

Accommodate learning styles, prior knowledge, all of that, and that is way harder than putting someone at the front of the room. I had a student or two like that and I had no problem with it. I reassigned seats every few months and they just switched to another seat at the front. There were at least 6 seats with good enough view, which is plenty. I'm sorry you had that experience.

I've had plenty of times where a P3/N99 mask caused blood oxygen level issues. But then again, those years I was mostly swinging a sledgehammer, wrangling a jackhammer or demo'ing asbestos for hours on end without break while wearing it. Not grocery shopping.
As someone who has spent _at least_ 10.000 hrs wearing masks and respirators - please don't worry about using them. Sure thry can be uncomfortable, but getting super sick, or worse; getting someone else you care about sick - is gonna be hella more uncomfortable. Try them on at home where it's safe and clean, to get used to wearing it, especially if it causes anxiety-related discomfort. Practice and adjust it when home, so you have a good fit and don't have to keep adjust8ng it when out. Practice at home, at not touching it too much. If you don't _need_ to wear an N95/99 mask, cloth masks are usually a lot more comfortable for extended use. Having two is still a gppd idea, they can get a bit damp if you're hot or active. If you _do_ need filtered masks, then keep your hands off it. Don't pull it down on your chin/neck/chest and put it back on - if there are contaminants around, that's where they'll land, and you just transferred them to the inside of your mask. Make sure they fit and seal well. Use an appropriate size for your facial features, and use the nose clip properly. Guys: Time for a clean shave bro. Gals: step back on foundation and rouge (why is obvious) and definitely no sticky lipgloss (hopefully also obvious).
Vaccines will come, but the logistics alone means we are several years away from any kind of herd immunity - natural or by vaccination. The masks, strict contact hygiene and sensible social distancing are the tools that can allow us a return to some reaemblance of normalcy until then. But only of we all work together. And just like vaccines, the rest of us usong them, protects not just ourselves but those whom we come in contact with who for legitimate health reasons can not use them themselves.

So some people with claustrophobia, certain types of anxiety (especially if combined with astma or COPD), may have very real trouble. Especially if they start hyperventilating. The masks likely won't _directly, physically_ cause them ill, but it can be a huge contributing factor in setting off a psychosomstic chain that might end in a bad place. These are still relative edge cases though. Having one or even more of these factors, doesn't automaticslly mean you'll experience the rest, and should not stop you from trying.

Masks are not very comfy. At least not the passive ones with actual N99/P3 etc filtration. Hate when they get soggy. However the full-cover masks we use when nastier demo like high-grade asbestos etc, those are much better. Because they're fitted, and intake is active (air forced in by motorized fan). @@snaplemouton A smoking ban applies to everyone. No one can smoke whether they smoked before or not everyone's right to smoke was restricted not just smokers.
The fact that most people won't exercise the choice does not matter for figuring out whether it effects them, otherwise one can argue that if most people will wear masks anyway then most peoples right not wear a mask is unaffected by a mask requirement, since they were going to wear it anyway.
Also while the health effects of second hand smoke are real and established, they are very small compared to the health effects of actually being a smoker. Even among people constantly exposed to second hand smoke (such as people working in bars) the effect was an increase in potentially deadly things like cancer (only like a 20-30% increased risk for cancer or heart disease) not a guarantee you would get something and die, so it is also only problematic for a subset of the population (the subset of workers constantly exposed who actually developed a pathology, workers constantly exposed to second hand smoke are already a subset of the general population). There are lesser health effects due to smoking that are more common (more respiratory infections etc.) but there are lesser health effects due to COVID that are much more common (cough, minor damage to heart and lungs that can be picked up by MRI and X-rays etc.). The total deaths attributable to second hand smoke in an average year since 1964 are in the tens of thousands, COVID will almost certainly kill more people this year so COVID if anything affects more of the population with health effects. www.cdc.gov/tobacco/data_statistics/fact_sheets/secondhand_smoke/health_effects/index.htm
So given that the comparison between smoking bans and mask requirements are indeed apt.

@@allanolley4874 If you're not a smoker, the no smoking law doesn't affect you in any ways shape or form other then preventing smokers from polluting your air. The mask mandate forces everyone to wear a mask.
And smoke doesn't just increase cancer and heart disease. Inhaling smoke has negative effect, period. It has negative effects for everyone. Doesn't matter if you're exposed to it for a few seconds or all day everyday.
Covid only has negative effect on old people and people with underlying conditions with very few exceptions. If you are healthy and young, you have more chance to get hit by lightning twice than dying or suffering lasting effects from covid-19, even if you were licking public toilet seats.
