Your #1 fan is Captain Elmer W. Evans, known to everyone as Junior. He is 84 and is the oldest working Waterman on Smith Island to date. His boat is named the Miss Sherry”
He is currently at the Hope Lodge in Baltimore undergoing a medical procedure. He is doing very well and walks back-and-forth between the Hope Lodge and the hospital every day.
He will be there another week or so before he’s back home here on Smith Island.

Hi there I don’t know if your dad’s the same person I knew years back. Did he ever come up the bay to Rock Hall in Sept-Oct for oyster season? I met a lot of Smith Islanders and one was named Juney. Such a nice man! I am still in contact with Chuck Marsh and Willard Marshall married a girl from rock hall i see him often

I come from a long line of Smith Island watermen and couldn’t be prouder. My grandmother told me stories of how she used to take a schoolboat back and forth to Crisfield to go to school. It really is like stepping back in time. My great uncles, Haynie and Newman Marshall were local celebrities. One time when I was 10 years old I snuck into the crab shanties and smashed about 20 crabs with a dip net. I thought I was gonna get banished!

I can totally relate to this video, Luke. I did nearly the same thing to Tangier island last summer. Took the ferry from Crisfield, rented a golf cart from the Air BnB and stayed 3 overnights on Tangier. I knew there would not be much to do on the island, but like you, I didn't care. I was just away from other people. The highlight for me was getting w/one of the local watermen who agreed to let me go crabbing with him and his crew on their boat. 3:30 AM wakeup call, at the dock by 4AM and onto the water pulling 400 traps. Was quite the experience.

Luke I seriously have to say this but this has definitely been one of my most memorable trips ever and yes I’m serious about that!! It was definitely nice to hear all the locals stories of there’s over all the years that they have lived there!!! I definitely watched the entire video several different times and enjoyed every minute of it!! You definitely don’t see many people like you wanting to learn or hear how other people have done things for the past 50 to 80 even 100 years!! And I could only imagine how hard it can be to get things that might be needed by others that live on an island that is only accessible by boat!! Seriously just think about that!! My aunt and uncle lived in Michigan and had a big house boat on the Great Lakes!! I just wish I could have been a little older to remember what all they had to go through and do to be able to go out every day and fish for their food and all the other things that had to be done just to make things work!! I do no that my uncle was very smart!! I kinda remember that he would take the boat out every year during the winter and take it back to his big shop and basically tear it all down going through the engine every year and making sure it would be good to run the entire next season and with the way he had things set up and all the extra parts he was never waiting on parts to come in and he never had a break down his entire 80 to 85 years on the Great Lakes!!! What ever he did worked and he stuck with it year after year!!! My aunt passed away several years back but my uncle is still hanging in there!!!

Those houses that typically have lap siding ,and no eaves or overhangs are called cape cods because without eaves,or overhangs they're less susceptible to nor easter winds(aka hurricanes) catching the eaves and lifting the roofs off of the houses, and should be mandatory anywhere one can encounter hurricanes or nor easters...
In the deep south we prefer large, wider overhanging roofs for the shade, sunlight and heat blockage even though it makes the homes more susceptible to roof lifting during any wind driven inclement weathers...

Wow! What amazing people. All in very good spirits despite the bad crabbing. I pray they get OVER RUN with crabs! God bless them.

I was just there for a feildtrip, I learned how to paint from a artist their! Also the house the boys were at was haunted by a 200 year old ghost... I slept in the room where they died...

That house is full of trinkets and gems. Its has big rooms.
Even on your day off you get up at 4am. I hope you caught some fish.
