IDK if it was full game originally. I think it was a bunch of concepts for a Mario game that got put to the side when demand forced out SMB2 for Japan. Those concepts were utilized into Doki Doki Panic when TV Tokyo asked for a game for their Dreamland festival. When SMB2 was rejected by Nintendo of America they took the game based on Mario concepts and reskinned it back into a Mario game.
I know it’s not the same but 2d Zelda and captain toad treasure tracker have somewhat similar puzzles and Donkey kong 94 has VERY similar puzzle design. Check out 94 at least, It might scratch that itch.
I remember SMB2 back in the 80s, it was awesome, it provoked weird emotions, it was hallucinating. Just imagine going from just knowing SMB1 to this game, new mechanics, new characters, new music, slippery ice levels, etc.

I remember playing this as a teen and wondering how trippy it was, and saying how it was such a weird Mario game but loving it. I remember dying so much at the level end because i didn't know which ones had the secret door/ exit only found by falling off. That scarlet mask though, that used to stress me out so much when it would chase you.
Having to dig down through those underground tunnels whilst Phantos is trying to kill you with scary music in the background is one of my earliest childhood memories of being terrified. Whilst the game might have been easy, it was still challenging to a young child and nobody wanted to start over at the start of the level. It was one of the few games i managed to beat at about 4 years old so it holds a big place in my heart for not requiring a game genie. That's great design in my book.
@@RunicSigils I’ve played through the NES and All Stars versions of all of these games several times. The gameplay differences are so minor they’re not even worth talking about. The only real difference is the graphics. Don’t be so pretentious.

I remember seeing the video announcing the first 120 episodes being taken down, hearing the plan to re-complete along side new episodes, and thinking what a herculean task it sounded like. I honestly don't care what people chatter about. SMB2. It hit exactly the right note to carry the Mario franchise, so I think it was both a good creative and a good business decision.
It's always so weird to me to hear people complain that a game "broke tradition" or "went against continuity" when it was the *SECOND* game. There was no tradition yet, there was only one game.
I think it has a such a cool aesthetic, I love the idea of Subcon. I also heard DDP was originally going to be a Mario Game anyways, really did come full circle. SMB2 deserves more credit!
In a pre-Gamecube interview, Miyamoto once said that Super Mario USA was his favorite Mario game. Please keep in mind that he wasn't a developer on the game originally, however.

What people tend to *overlook,* however, is that apparently Doki Doki Panic started out as a Mario styled tech demo showing off vertical scrolling; only problem was, Nintendo wasn't quite sure how to turn that into a full game. Fuji TV contacted Nintendo for a game to build up hype for their very own Yume Kojo '87 festival, and thus Yume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic was born.
My first time playing this game was the GBA version. I absolutely loved every second of it and looking for the Yoshi eggs (which I did not know were a GBA exclusive!) probably accounted to majority of my playtime of this game. Hearing the ending credits brought some good nostalgia for me!
I remember during Covid I went ahead and binged the mainlines Mario games that I haven’t played yet (which was like 10 games) and going from game to game i remember how different this game felt compared to the others i would still say it’s one of my all time 5 favorite Mario games

I'm so glad to see this game getting some respect. I absolutely loved it as a kid. The design, character animations, fluid movement, multiple character options, all of it. Fantastic game that gets a bad rap, just because it's different.

Yeah, I adored this one as a kid. I really think its mechanics are some of the most purely fun in the franchise. Like Girard said, it's just so endlessly *satisfying* - especially when you bounce an item off multiple enemies in a row. And exploration was really rewarding too, since it could yield alternate paths, as well as good items and access to the warp zones. Mario 2 is a genuinely good game on its own merits.
Super Mario All-Stars was the very first game I owned as a kid, though I never played SMB2 as much on the pack as the other games. Still, it's a huge part of my childhood. That staff roll theme still gives me chills to this day.

One of the things I've loved about Super Mario Bros. 2 is the choice of characters, each with their own unique abilities. And the fact that everyone that's played it often ended up having a favorite character to use. I used Princess a lot because of the flying.
I wish Miyamoto threw more Mario Bros 2 elements into his suite of abilities. The digging mechanic is an obvious one that's just ridiculously fun. I get that Mario 2 is only that way in the US but at this point it's still a canon part of the franchise.

Mario 2-style throwing has made it's way back into Mario's abilities, for example if you want you can pick up shells and ice blocks and Pow blocks and stuff Mario 2 style in NsmbWii, but yeah they haven't been the central mechanic of any game since Mario 2.

It's pretty much a badly put together expansion pack for hardcore adult mario enthusiasts. It was only ever released on floppy disk in Japan anyway, never earned a place on a cartridge.

Some were made easier for US/Japan, some harder. I'm guessing another factor was that regional releases were also an opportunity to adjust balance as updates/patching weren't really a thing back then.
Mario Bros is still one of my favorite franchises. It was like a religious experience when I first saw each, the original at Aladdin's Castle arcade and the second and third at my mate's place. My collection of Mario memorabilia is like a minor museum.
A lesser known fact is that Doki Doki Panic itself WAS being designed originally as a Mario game. No joke (check out Norm, the Gaming Historian's vid). Miyamoto decided to have it reskinned as its own game. Only to ironically have THAT game re-reskinned when it was ported as SMB2USA.
Doki doki panic also started life as a mario game which is why it has pow-blocks… Mario Bros original was a very vertical game also even though it had no scrolling… really everything just came full circle. I personally love the slower, more explorative and puzzle solving style of SMB2. It is admittedly under developed from that point of view… SMB2-2 for the Switch confirmed.

I was always intrigued by this game as a kid and loved it as an adult when my house mate and I finally completed it. It’s a delight, with its strong Japanese, Nintendo and 80’s flavours. Full of personality and retro atmosphere.
When I first played this, I was wondering why my jump didn't hurt enemies. I also got brick walled by a Birdo because I didn't know that I could pick up stuff.
OMG the final credits theme of this game hit me with a massive nostalgia wave. It reminds me of a lot the ending music for Super mario RPG - they have almost identical chord progression. In fact, if I were to pick a game that were most like SMB2 in spirit, it would be SMRPG - a totally out of left field world with several areas, enemies and characters that the series never saw again, a fantasy setting with different biomes and a massive dose of wonderfully weird but heartfelt nostalgia.
I've loved SMB2 from the moment I played it. The Mario All Stars edition was just icing on the cake. A better looking version of the game I already loved so much.
Did you know that Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't originally a Mario game? It was actually a reskin of a japan-exclusive game called "Doki Doki Panic". The actual Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't brought to America initially because it was considered too hard, but it eventually made its way overseas as The Lost Levels. This explains why the American Super Mario Bros 2 was so weird and was such an outlier.
The funny thing is, Doki Doki Panic was based on early prototypes for a potential Mario game, so it kind of DID start out as a Mario game. It was made by "Research & Development 4", Miyamoto's team that created the Mario games on NES, and after a game was commissioned by Fuji TV for their summer "Dream Factory" festival, they dusted off that unused prototype and added in the "Doki Doki" characters and fleshed out the rest of the gameplay in a Mario-esqe style, even adding several Mario references like stars, POW blocks, coins, and warp zones. So its not just some random game, totally unaffiliated with Mario, that they turned into a Mario game for the US.
Thank you for giving some love to this classic! It was the first game I ever finished as a kid and holds a special place in my heart for sure! It also has a game breaking bug near the end that helped land me a testing job at Epic Games many years ago! Also, don't forget that this games content spawned some great Mario cartoons in the Mario Super Show and was the first game featured on the cover of Nintendo Power!
This might be sacrilege but I kinda think I may enjoy playing Super Mario Brothers 2 more than 3 or World... It has a level of charm and playability that is quite admirable.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. My favorite bit of Doki Doki Panic trivia is that the reason Luigi's taller than Mario is because of having to cover the sprite of a tall, but surprisingly agile, pregnant woman. Makes me chuckle every time.
Since childhood this has been one of my favorite Mario games. Recently went back and replayed 1 and 2 on Switch, and between them, I just had more fun playing Mario 2. Awesome game.
Even before I knew this WASN'T technically a Mario game, it was one of my favorites as a kid. Between this and Mario Land 2, I've always had a fondness for the Mario games that go a bit harder on the weirdness. My love of this game is amplified by Birdo being one of my favorite characters in the franchise and I do keep hoping they'll bring back Wart.
Looking into the Yume Kojo event was really interesting. The event sounds like it was pretty insane, and there was a lot of interesting stuff that came out of it, including this.
Mario 2 on Gameboy advance is my favorite version. I like that they added a extra boss, have voices for the main characters and bosses, and the Yoshi Egg side quest is pretty fun.
Smb2 on release, as a kid was excellent. The colors, sounds, shapes and varied enemies were awesome..it's not till i got older i could see how different it was from the rest..i just loved all the secrets.
People didn’t like it because it felt different but as time goes on people see more and more why super Mario sunshine…I mean super Mario bros 2 is a great game

Super Mario Bros 2 is honestly a great game. It's really fun, easy to pick up and play, and you can't say that about some games
A lesser known fact is that Doki Doki Panic itself WAS being designed originally as a Mario game. No joke (check out Norm, the Gaming Historian's vid). Miyamoto decided to have it reskinned as its own game. Only to ironically have THAT game re-reskinned when it was ported as SMB2USA.
Such a huge upgrade from "Play It" (back when he originally reviewed it) to "Complete It". =O

Doki doki panic also started life as a mario game which is why it has pow-blocks… Mario Bros original was a very vertical game also even though it had no scrolling… really everything just came full circle.
I personally love the slower, more explorative and puzzle solving style of SMB2. It is admittedly under developed from that point of view… SMB2-2 for the Switch confirmed.

I was always intrigued by this game as a kid and loved it as an adult when my house mate and I finally completed it. It’s a delight, with its strong Japanese, Nintendo and 80’s flavours. Full of personality and retro atmosphere.

When I first played this, I was wondering why my jump didn't hurt enemies. I also got brick walled by a Birdo because I didn't know that I could pick up stuff.
OMG the final credits theme of this game hit me with a massive nostalgia wave. It reminds me of a lot the ending music for Super mario RPG - they have almost identical chord progression. In fact, if I were to pick a game that were most like SMB2 in spirit, it would be SMRPG - a totally out of left field world with several areas, enemies and characters that the series never saw again, a fantasy setting with different biomes and a massive dose of wonderfully weird but heartfelt nostalgia.

I've loved SMB2 from the moment I played it. The Mario All Stars edition was just icing on the cake. A better looking version of the game I already loved so much.
Did you know that Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't originally a Mario game? It was actually a reskin of a japan-exclusive game called "Doki Doki Panic". The actual Super Mario Bros 2 wasn't brought to America initially because it was considered too hard, but it eventually made its way overseas as The Lost Levels. This explains why the American Super Mario Bros 2 was so weird and was such an outlier.
The funny thing is, Doki Doki Panic was based on early prototypes for a potential Mario game, so it kind of DID start out as a Mario game.
It was made by "Research & Development 4", Miyamoto's team that created the Mario games on NES, and after a game was commissioned by Fuji TV for their summer "Dream Factory" festival, they dusted off that unused prototype and added in the "Doki Doki" characters and fleshed out the rest of the gameplay in a Mario-esqe style, even adding several Mario references like stars, POW blocks, coins, and warp zones.
So its not just some random game, totally unaffiliated with Mario, that they turned into a Mario game for the US.
Thank you for giving some love to this classic! It was the first game I ever finished as a kid and holds a special place in my heart for sure! It also has a game breaking bug near the end that helped land me a testing job at Epic Games many years ago!
Also, don't forget that this games content spawned some great Mario cartoons in the Mario Super Show and was the first game featured on the cover of Nintendo Power!
This might be sacrilege but I kinda think I may enjoy playing Super Mario Brothers 2 more than 3 or World... It has a level of charm and playability that is quite admirable.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. My favorite bit of Doki Doki Panic trivia is that the reason Luigi's taller than Mario is because of having to cover the sprite of a tall, but surprisingly agile, pregnant woman. Makes me chuckle every time.

Since childhood this has been one of my favorite Mario games. Recently went back and replayed 1 and 2 on Switch, and between them, I just had more fun playing Mario 2. Awesome game.

Even before I knew this WASN'T technically a Mario game, it was one of my favorites as a kid. Between this and Mario Land 2, I've always had a fondness for the Mario games that go a bit harder on the weirdness. My love of this game is amplified by Birdo being one of my favorite characters in the franchise and I do keep hoping they'll bring back Wart.

What most people don't know, though, is that Doki Doki Literature Club is a sequel to Doki Doki Panic.
Looking into the Yume Kojo event was really interesting. The event sounds like it was pretty insane, and there was a lot of interesting stuff that came out of it, including this.
I'd watch a documentary about the yume kojo event, great title could be "beyond mario"

Watching this video made me realize, for long much I played this game as a kid, I didn't get very far into it at all.
Mario 2 on Gameboy advance is my favorite version. I like that they added a extra boss, have voices for the main characters and bosses, and the Yoshi Egg side quest is pretty fun.
Smb2 on release, as a kid was excellent.
The colors, sounds, shapes and varied enemies were awesome..it's not till i got older i could see how different it was from the rest..i just loved all the secrets.
