THANK YOU!!!! I mostly carry 5 inch full size 45 with the CD 220gr+P. When I do carry a 9mm it is the 135gr +P CD. Thank you! This was beyond words useful. I am completely happy with my choices. I definitely am super happy with both. I love my 45 but am.now cool with the 9mm even more. This is a test I trust and it built my confidence in my ammo choice. Thank you!!! 💯
A head Hornady engineer told our dept. when this ammo came out that the Critical Duty 9mm 135+P was the best overall performing round in the line. Thats what we carried in our G17’s with good results.
A fella can't complain about either. They would do the job for sure. I have carried the 45 in a 45 Shield a few years ago. But switched to the +P HST. Great test & results. Thank you.
Nebraska sheriffs outdoor demo from hornandy they all did good on barriers, the 45 is my carry load currently, my 9 mm is standard pressure 135, amazed you did my exact carry loads, i was impressed with box velocity you tested, nice to see close to 400 ft/lbs from 9 mm and 500 ft/lbs from 45, that not to bad for store shelf loads
My favorite ammo. Barrier blind and awesome penetration. Probably why so many agencies use it. The 124 +p seems to get more expansion and you still get great penatration. Great test tools!
Thanks, another good video. This is consistent with your earlier videos on the Critical Duty. I use 135 grain 9mm in my G17 and G26 carry guns. Last week I also got 5 boxes of the +P and tested those. They work well out of both guns and no discernable difference in recoil between my range ammo 124 grain S&B FMJ, Critical Duty 135 grain, and Critical Duty 135 grain +P. As to people wondering "why would you need a round that can penetrate doors, windshields, etc.", I live in Oakland and things are getting out of hand faster than you can blink your eyes. Scenarios where I have to shoot through a door or window to protect myself are absolutely not hypothetical. Thanks man, keep these videos coming.
Critical Duty is among one of the most iconic, effective, & commonly used FBI/Secret Service rounds ever made. Not saying this round is the best but if you do your research, for duty & offensive situations it’s one of if not the most effective round for that purpose itself. With that being said I prefer the Critical Duty 135gr +P , Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P, or Federal Premium HST 147gr if we talking 9mm. Those are the best rounds hands down. Stats say it all!
Good test, with the correct pistols. Critical Duty is a NICHE cartridge: NJ Legal. It also has a place through barriers. 503 ft-lbs is A LOT in a .45ACP! (I’m buying some, especially as a Defensive Cartridge when hunting!)
The marketing geniuses over at Hornady certainly met their design goals for LE. I am just wondering how many civilian self defense scenarios there are that involve barriers and don’t land you behind bars 😂. Of the two I like the 45 way better due to the higher energy and larger diameter
@@timrobinson6573My thoughts exactly! Plenty of scenarios where a barrier blind bullet could make the difference in a gun fight. Personally I prefer 9mm NATO +p ball ammo in my carry guns or this load the critical duty +p.
I've heard about what timrobinson6573 is stating. After the initial shot is fired the attackers will oftentimes run away or take cover and continue their assault from that position. This hints at the value of using a bullet with good stopping power(especially for the first rounds) to take them out of the fight ASAP. Some people get the notion that stopping power is unimportant because they can just fire as many rounds as they have in their magazine. Though if the bad guy can still move after that first shot, he is likely to get off the X. That first shot may be your best opportunity to avoid a long-drawn-out gunfight against someone hiding behind cover.
@@Rubeless How is that a disadvantage? 2 holes are better than 1. Imagine being stabbed with a pencil, now imagine being stabbed by the same pencil from the front of your chest and the back of your chest. Which one do think does more damage? I guarantee you will bleed out much faster with 2 stab wounds over 1. The whole expanding bullets are overrated and under penetrate. 9mm is a very weak caliber as it is. Also to add to that if caliber doesn’t matter ie… 9, .40 .45 than why does it “need” to expand? Shot placement matters and you shouldn’t be shooting at anything or anyone with a bystander behind your target anyway so hollow points are moot. I carry with what I train with. Most people never train with their +p HST hollow points.
Hornady created these loads based on the criteria established for law enforcement requirements after the Miami Dade shooting. They had to penetrate auto glass, drywall, auto sheetmetal and other media and still show some expansion and still provide adequate penetration in flesh after encountering those media types. These are still considered to be very good for those purposes. Are they the best for your average person? That person has to answer that after considering their own needs for a protection round.
Good Review...as always. Great to see those results. Those are what I use in my home defense gun's or anything I carry with a 4.5" or greater barrel. Anything under that I use the Extreme Defender's. I now use the Underwood .380 +P Item 152 in my pocket gun's as a DIRECT result of your testing. Very Impressive Round for a Mouse Gun.
Exceeded listed velocities are three words you haven’t spoken recently. Both worked as designed, barrier blind and deep penetration. A little deeper than I prefer but wouldn’t hesitate to use either. Thanks for the test Tools!
That C/D round in .45 has some really good velocity for its weight , and I suppose that's the reason it performed so well . I like it , gotta get me some .Thanks T&T for another GREAT video !
Well this was an interesting test. I don’t know of a dept. carrying a 1911 for duty. But if it’s all you had I get it M&P 45 and Glock 21 would be the standards… our dept. has been carrying both of them. We just changed to the Glock 19 and Glock 45 same ammo as in your test! The 19 and 45 have a RDS (red dot) 19 is my preferred option.
Critical duty is designed for barrier penetration, specifically glass, while still delivering proper expansion and penetration. Hornady has a very informative podcast talking with their engineers on the development of this round for law enforcement.
Critical Duty is exactly what it's meant for - DUTY! 👍 Personal defense is one thing but defensive AND offensive use possibly involving barricaded bad guys (cars, walls, glass, fences, dumpsters) requires more penetration. If I were on the road a lot, my truck gun would be loaded with Critical Duty or FMJs.
Righteous test Brother you Rock Tools!!! The Hornady “CRITICAL DOOKIE” was always my least favorite round that I ballistically tested…I have no clue why the F.B.I ever chose those rounds in any caliber
a even balance of expansion and penetration. some won't agree but considering the wound tracks and fair expansion. I agree with you they didn't fail only doing what they were designed to do. no complaints here. papa 😊
Good tests Tools! I can get the 50 round boxes of the 135gr +P 9mm stuff for cheap so good to know! Kinda like the idea of a middle-ground between 124 & 147gr, even if it isn't as proven 🤷🏻♂️
There's a reason why the Texas Rangers started screaming for a larger caliber, and while the .36 cal. 1851 New Navy and New Army revolvers put their share of permanent residents in Boot Hill ....it was the .45 caliber that was adopted by the U.S. military all the way from the Indian Wars up through Viet Nam. There's nothing wrong with poking a half inch hole close to two feet through something.
That penetration was impressive from both, I know most of the time this is just what they do from these projectiles but would love to see them open up a bit more. None the less good test. Have a good one brother see you on the next one.
Nice expansion from both. Imo 45 will always win over 9 simply because of the laws of physics... more mass, causes bigger holes, more trauma, more shock, and finally better “stopping power”.
Talk to a few trauma surgeons you'll find out you are wrong. They will all tell you they cannot tell the difference in the wounds and cannot identify the caliber used until they find a projectile from most all commonly used defensive calibers. That is simple fact.
When it comes to common calibers, I'm like you and would always want +P. Both exceeded the box, and the big boy did a great job in the gel. One question though; does Hornady make the same rounds without the insert? HST? If so, I'm sure we would see better opening of the projectile, but probably loose some in penetration. Great test as always!
I like the microphone on whatever camera you're using. On a lot of guntube channels the shots are practically muted. It's nice hearing that good, deep pop when your guns go off, music to my ears.
9mm is a great caliber and performed well in this video however despite what some might have you believe it is not created equal to .45 in lethality when comparing similar ammo .45 tends to always expand larger and deliver more energy which is very important with handgun rounds
One agin , when using the same type of bullet the 45 out performs the 9mm. Proving again that the larger heavier slower bullets have more killing power!
These usually do very well. I just bough bought some Critical Duty in 357 Magnum last week. I figure all of these calibers would expand a little more out if a carbine too. Would live to see some ammo tests of a round comparison of being fired out of a pistol vs a carbine. Another good video. Keep em coming.
Excellent test as usual. Both the 9MM and 45acp did exactly what they were designed to do. I just joined the members list a few days ago and I am thoroughly impressed with your test and format as such. Just glad to be able to help support my new favorite TH-cam shooting channel. Keep up the outstanding work, my friend 👏
Tools&Targets, now I know what Corbon 45 ACP + P ammo in 165 gr achieves velocity wise in a full size handgun. Interesting to say the least. I know that’s a heavy bullet compared to light weight one so not apples to apples comparison but gives me an idea of it’s numbers. Edit: I just looked up the advertised velocity and it says 1,250 FPS. So higher than the Critical Duty 45 +p. Also I fired it from a Glock 36 so it was super snappy. The bullet didn’t stay together when I attempted to capture it so yeah that should tell you all you need to know about it being a super hot round.
Well.... it's perfect for barriers like the notorious front windshields, steel and other barriers. Once again? It's a tradeoff. The FBI's assessment over Miami Dade 1986 really shines through in the Critical Duty line regardless of caliber. Do you want capacity or do you want hard hitting? You can find really good loads in all calibers if you search around online.
Classic example of what I've been saying for years: The 9 Minimal MUST expand to be reasonably effective as a "man stopper" while the "45ACP, even if it does NOT expand REMAINS a .45". Which also explains why pistols chambered in 9 Minimal are, generally speaking, high capacity. Because they HAVE to be whereas pistols chambered in .45ACP don't.
Great tests and comparisons! I generally carry Remington Golden Sabers in my carry guns, and Federal Syntech defense in my 45 (sabers as back up). I always skimmed over the critical duty for my 45 for some reason, but i must be missing out haha. Great vid as always.
Nice! I’m glad to see this test, I have quite a few boxes of the .45. I am perfectly comfortable with the penetration with either of them. Great performance for both of them. Awesome test! I’ll continue to buy both when I see them. Good stuff as always 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Where and why do you shoot defense round to know if it performs better? I've had boxes of defense rounds for years.. no need to use them in a situation.
Wow! I gotta get some of that stuff! I always wondered if it was just overpriced, but that’s clearly better in every respect in both calibers! That disruption in the jelly was CRAZY!
This clearly shows the .45 hits with more power so it is more deadly than the 9mm. Funny how when 9mm advocates start justifying the 9 by saying there is less recoil, I have more bullets in my gun and so forth, it does not make up for having less power at impact. It is inconceivable that any adult male can not train to the point where one can place the .45 just as accurately as the 9mm. Do not settle for a less powerful bullet just because you do not want or do not have the time to train because we are talking about a deadly event when your life is at stake so it is important enough to make the time to do so. Keep up the good videos.
I love 45 but the 9mm does beat it in a lot of other ways, mostly in availability I'd say. However, I don't really believe that either one is more deadly than the other. Call me crazy all you want. People have eaten up 45s like they're nothing, people have tanked through 9mm like they're nothing, yet some have succumbed to only a few rounds of .22 or .380. I'd say shot placement is indeed critical for duty (hehe), which truly matters over caliber. If someone is accurate with a .22 or a .380, but inaccurate with any larger caliber, then that's perfectly fine as long as they hit what they're shooting. If we really want to talk about ease of shooting here, the 5.7x28 would be best for recoil sensitive people and disabled people, and it's accurate. Myself, I carry a 1911 in 45 because it's just a classic carry. I used to carry a Beretta 92fs in 9mm, then a single action 357 magnum, but switched to my 45. My first handgun I ever shot as a child was a Ruger 1911 in 45, and I remember loving that gun and the recoil wasn't bad. I have great hand strength so it doesn't matter to me today. However, I'd be comfortable carrying a .22 just as much (I actually carry a naa. 22 magnum most days in a vest pocket). But at the end of the day, we can all agree that training *is* paramount, and caliber size won't matter if you can't hit the broad side of Lizzo. Stay safe and God bless
Head shots trump all others and rifles are vastly superior to handguns. Still the size of the hole a bullet makes is tops for handguns as the bigger the hole in a blood vessel or heart, the faster is the blood loss which means the aggressor will stop fighting quicker.@@YoushouldloveyourselfNOW1738
lol no this shows how comparable they are. 45 loads seem much more finicky about barrel length and weight too, seen some of his tests that were very underwhelming. i want to like 45 its cool. even 40 is very impressive in his tests sometimes much more-so than 9 or 45. but 9mm hits well above it's weight, many of these good loads are ridiculous with the 9 and it is always going to have more capacity and likely more control. i agree the 45 was devastating and impressive but the 9 was very good as well. this is a load i want in 45 for sure, much better than critical duty which was very different in different tests depending on the barrel length. 45 seems to need more speed than people think to do anything special.
@@YoushouldloveyourselfNOW1738 I remember reading about a Police Woman who was shoot to death when she opened a door in a raid and the thug was standing there holding a small revolver chambered in 38 Special. He shoved the gun into her left breast and pulled the trigger. She was dead before she hit the ground.. Then I remembered my Uncle telling me in 1959 when I was 10, how a Japs head exploded when my Uncle shot him with a .45acp fmj bullet at close range. I think folks have not realized how effective handgun bullets can be a very close range. It is hardly ever mentioned in ammo discussions.
Awesome video I would like to see the 45acp in the 185gr +p I read an article the other night that john browning originally designed the 45 for a 200gr bullet thank you for all you do
These do exactly what hornady designed them to do. I still want to know if these will perform if you remove the polymer tip. Curious if the “barrier blind” would work if the polymer tip was removed before testing.
You will NEVER expend the extra 10 rounds. It's like saying you need a stretch limo to take your kids to school. The fully loaded minivan is simply better.
@@wwjd8833 well, it's literally your take. You argued on behalf of many excess rounds that serve no actual purpose, because data om shootings show that the extra rounds has NEVER mattered. The capacity of a stretch limo is much greater than that of a minivan, but the minivan is cheaper, safer, has all the room you do need, all the creature comforts for your offspring, and again, you never need the capacity.

I'd be interested in seeing the critical duty tested in 40 s&w, I see in some old tests it works amazing but in modern tests I have been seeing them fail to even attempt to expand.
I have done a lot of testing of Critical Duty in 9mm, 357sig, 40 and 45. The 40 was the only one that I had multiple failures to expand in different tests. The other calipers all did real good.
Would like to see this exact test again but with critical defense.

9mm is a great caliber and performed well in this video however despite what some might have you believe it is not created equal to .45 in lethality when comparing similar ammo .45 tends to always expand larger and deliver more energy which is very important with handgun rounds
These 45 auto 220 plus p are my carry ammo in my glock 21 for my truck gun..
Trust my life on these baddies
Thanks for the comparison video! I would definitely use this ammo, I do use it in my 9mm CZ 75 compact.
Good stuff
One agin , when using the same type of bullet the 45 out performs the 9mm. Proving again that the larger heavier slower bullets have more killing power!
That .45 would be decent for trail carry in most places.
Thank you sir. I gotta get some carbine stuff done.
Agreed. This 135+p out of a carbine has holy grail potential. So damn curious to see a test
Good to see, I always loved the 45.
Work the Taylor scale, 45 wins hands down
😎👊
Tools u gotta get a G21/41 King of
.45 since 1990. 13+1 of these is some serious power.
😎👊
Just laid in some 124 grain Critical Duty 9mm and .40 which is 173 grain, if I recall. Like to see those two head to head.
Another great test, brother.
Well.... it's perfect for barriers like the notorious front windshields, steel and other barriers. Once again? It's a tradeoff. The FBI's assessment over Miami Dade 1986 really shines through in the Critical Duty line regardless of caliber.
Do you want capacity or do you want hard hitting? You can find really good loads in all calibers if you search around online.
Those are pretty impressive muzzle velocities and terminal performances.
Most of these nine verses, 45 comparisons suck, but yours was great and fair
45 is my go to edc 🔥🔥🔥
Great performance from both! Appreciate you Tools. 🇺🇸
Yes indeed. 😎👊
Howdy duty, the weather changed to the white not quite shovel duty cpl hours ago...
The 135+P is the current FBI load. I get 1,200 FPS out of two different 9mm 1911s
They did their duty!😎👊
Another great test!
What's your opinion on 9mm Critical Duty 124+p vs 135+p? 🤔
Thank you sir. Pretty sure I have tested them both before without the cloth I use now. I need to look back and maybe do an update test.
Great test , both did very good. Thanks for a great test my friend.
Cool video but I’ll stick with HST’s for all of my defensive calibers. Never been really impressed with critical duty’s
Where and why do you shoot defense round to know if it performs better? I've had boxes of defense rounds for years.. no need to use them in a situation.
😎👊
Wow! I gotta get some of that stuff! I always wondered if it was just overpriced, but that’s clearly better in every respect in both calibers! That disruption in the jelly was CRAZY!
I would run either one of them in my tools. They both performed good and expanded nicely. Great test brother tools.
Thank you sir. Appreciate you!😎👊
@@ToolsandTargets I appreciate the work and the honesty you deliver in every video. I no longer buy defensive ammo until I see you test it.
Well I'm disabled. I can't do the .45
I love 45 but the 9mm does beat it in a lot of other ways, mostly in availability I'd say.
Looks like they both do well, either is a fine choice.
At least with the 45, if you get any expansion at all even a small amount it's wicked!!!
Awesome video I would like to see the 45acp in the 185gr +p I read an article the other night that john browning originally designed the 45 for a 200gr bullet thank you for all you do
Everybody's friend the .45 ACP!
These do exactly what hornady designed them to do. I still want to know if these will perform if you remove the polymer tip. Curious if the “barrier blind” would work if the polymer tip was removed before testing.
Hey Tools, it's almost 7pm up here in the land O'Canada. Great way to end the evening with another good one. Keep up the good work Sir!👍👍👊
Appreciate that, my friend!😎👊
Both did great
Try that test again using 185 gr xtp in the 45
I think I would have to go with the 45ACP if I were to carry this brand/type. Great video as always thanks 👍
You’d sacrifice 10 rounds for minimal gain in performance?
You will NEVER expend the extra 10 rounds.
It's like saying you need a stretch limo to take your kids to school. The fully loaded minivan is simply better.
@@bobjohnson1633 that’s the dumbest take I’ve ever heard.
@@bobjohnson1633 because multiple attackers never happens.
I really like the 9mm critical duty. Good woods round!
Love all Hornady Critical Duty And Defense carry 9mm defense in my GX4...My Ruger American 45acp and My Hi Point JHP45acp both Love the Duty....Thanks Tools appreciate all you do for us...Been With you since Day 1....Merry Christmas Brother!❤🎅🎁🎄🎄
Ima keep using my Barnes for my edc ammo
That is some hot 45 ACP on par with or exceeding Buffalo Bore.
.45acp. Why? Because of John Moses Browning! That power from a 45acp is fantastic.
💥😎👊💥
Try them in 16 inch carbine
😎👍
Excellent testing as usual👍
Another great video , thanks brother 👊🏻🇺🇸
