Dave, you never cease to amaze me on how well you build Dual Sports! The Red Potato is looking great with the larger tank and graphics. The fork conversion is also amazing. One thing about the Acerbis tanks is they are extremely tough. Also, it looked like you had the fat bars on it also. Such a well set up XR! Cheers!
Hi DOC650, yes, the beast has the CR bend fat bars, and clamps. The stock steel bars bend easily, and are just ok, kinda like the stock DR650 bars. The bike looks much better with the graphics, too much red without them. Take care Amigo. Thank you
The big tank looks good as do the graphics. Not much is worse than anxiety over fuel. You have another bike ready for your signature long distance adventures. Good deal! I can't wait to see the videos.
THE MIGHTY VERBAL WIDGET !!!! - Doc said it perfectly, of course !!! - Dude, That is just a beautiful BEAST of a 650 Dual Sport - I love it !!! - I also like the red front sprocket cover. Don't know if that's stock - but it really sets off the bike as well. You are also so very correct - in that those new graphics make that bike look so good !!! I really like the idea of gluing a small piece of sheet metal to protect the tank. Great idea !!! Cheers Dave - Just love the video and your ingenuity !!!! Quite the Genius !!!!
Hi OBI-WAN, The sprocket cover is from XR's only but like the DR stuff, there is now a China made cover that looks like it at half the cost. The graphics are a must have to set off the bike. Almost make the bike look as fast as your DR650, almost.
That's a really nice XR, I really like the fork conversion. I'll look for a video for that on your channel. I had a XR400 years ago with Applied triple clamps and an IMS tank that also had a clearance problem, your idea to protect your tank seems like a good one.
Thank you for the compliment, really there was nothing wrong with the stock forks, I thought they worked well. I stumbled on a guy selling a XR650 with this front end for $1100. I just swapped over the cool parts to my bike, fixed that other bike up and sold it for 2k or something like that? It was the best deal I ever made.
If you look on the bottom fork yolk the 650L has bump stops for the handlebars. Simply glue the deseired thickness of metal onto the bump stops to prevent the bars hitting the tank. Maybe glue with JB weld. Also the Italian pronounciation for Acerbis is Ah-chair-beez.
Do the 2nd and 5th gear mod!! I jb welded some shim stock on the plastic tank on my XR. It doesn't stick 😢 Better to glue it to the fork clamps themselves.
Good to know, thanks for the tip on the JB weld. I can't justify pulling down a perfectly good Honda engine to swap a few gears. I'm curios to take it on a ride and see if the mpg improves running 500rpm lower??
Nice graphics and the XR is looking good!! Love that bike but unfortunately too tall for my shortness lol. Very cool you got the X front end on there. I thought it looked different than stock before you commented. I hope RM is giving you some sponsorship now 😂. Interesting you have that big red plastic on the left side?
It’s a tall one for sure. I’m 6 foot and I put the one inch lowering link on it and dropped the forks an inch just because. Feels like a dirt bike, not a dual sport. Thank you for the comment.
Graphics look great. Interesting your mileage isn't better on the XRL. I have the normal exhaust and have rejetted and am able to get around 47-48 MPG with stock gearing and 43-44 with D606 tires and 14/48 gearing. This is surface streets, some freeway and about 50% off road. For extended hwy use the 50-tooth rear is something probably worth doing. If I was riding purely off road, I would probably consider 14/50. Of course, it's all personal preference. Thanks for your videos, I always enjoy them.
@@verbalwidget7267 Pretty crazy, I am jetted for 4000 feet, that might help some. I wish there was an easy way to put an 02 sensor in the exhaust to determine how well we are really jetting these bikes. For the record, I also ride like an old man.
@@letsgo8941 I have a day off coming up and I'm going to take the XR650 on a road trip to see if the mileage changed. Just curios I put a smaller rear sprocket on from a 45 to a 42 and see if dropping the rpm at cruise will lead to better mpg? I need to put on the new fuel valves first but that's quick. I'll see 42 every now and then but very rear. the bike runs great, and plug is spot on?
I liked the big capacity, but it did not fit on well at all. Returned the 5.8, bought the Clarke 4.7. It fit like it was designed for the bike. Enjoy the BRP!
@@teamground0229 I would have done the same. It’s a love/ hate thing. This was on my bike when I got it. If I were to buy new I’d go you route and get a Clark.
A 🪑 🐝 🐝 🐝 lol I just got a 2022 xr and I picked up the 5.8 and Rocky Mountain graphics along with all new fenders to keep all the stock stuff nice since it’s the anniversary. But question, is your acerbis logo on the sides of the tank raised??? And can you PLEASE upload the heat gun footage!!!
Hi Eric, I have some footage from a different camera, but I accidently deleted, a camera card that had the good stuff and two rides on them?? Old man and new technology are a bad combination. I'll see if there is some way to use the footage I have. There is only one raised Acrebis logo and that's about an inch under the gas cap. Cheers.

I would love to hook up with you and OW. that would be awesome.
Good looking bike man. I definitely have a soft spot for the XR 650

Thank you, Mr. Grump, it always felt like you're riding a true dirt bike on the street. The semi-light weight and feel is refreshing.

ROB !!!
Thank you, Rob, I do see a road trip for tacos coming up in the future to check the mpg and the range of the tank. Cheers
The graphics really make a positive difference. Breaking up the red. XR650L is looking great!
Hi Andrew, I think your right, that's all the big tank needed. I tolerated the smaller gas tank because it looked better. Silly me.

Use a heat gun and push the tank in a bit. I've done it before to make clearance for bigger tanks. Works perfectly.
Good tip
