    Jut got a 24 xr650L. Modifying it for a long haul PanAm cruiser. Great info herr! Think I will die it a bit before I modify the sprockets. Thanks for the vid.

    I couldn't agree more about the 14/45 ratio. I found I was either too short or too long on gearing when riding dirt with my XR. Went to the lower 14T in front and never looked back.

    I just got a very low mileage 2009 (938 miles). I immediately installed a Fritzco 14 tooth but haven’t even had time to test it yet. It was good to see your video to assure me I made the right choice.

    14/48 is the sweet spot but use a thick front for spline wear.

    I was running a 14 on the front with 48 on the rear was good for the dirt but not so good on the hyway, so I thought I ride on the street more then the dirt so went back to 15/48 , I have dirt bikes at home I can take out if I want to dirt ride but really the XR can handle the dirt with stock gearing just need to know how to ride, what a perfect bike

      It would have been better for you to go with the 14/45, instead of the 15/48, for several reasons. 1- 15\48, requires you to change the chain to a longer one, or forcefully push the rear wheel forward and then you rub the lower chain guide, the one right in front of the rear sprocket.
      3- If you wanted to ride off-road, it would be easy to change to 14 in front and you would immediately get the more correct transmission ratios of the 14/48 and all with the same chain of 110 links, with which the motorcycle comes from the factory.

    Thanks for the vid man , Love my xr650L ride safe . I just ordered 14 :) .Had it in mind to do , you pushed me over the edge :) hahah , Now to set my sag , or maybe a lowering link , even at 6' I tippy toe and have to lean to one side at stop lights . Its not cool when severe trail rides the grounds not even lol.

      I did that lowering link first, as this is the 3rd xrL ive owned and batt relocate and aftermarket muf/sa.. i use the 14/48 it like 8 mph difference.. game changer for me lowering losing 40lbs mostly HIGH, lowered the CG on the bike.. with 14/48 it still will top out at 82mph at 6k rpm.. but if i get on the hiway i wont be going much over 70 fully loaded... and its only till my next dirt road on my 1100 mile looped route!

    You might want to consider running a 47 tooth back sprocket from sunstar. I also have been running 14 and 15 front counter shaft sprockets with this setup without having to change the chain length. Also a lot of people run a bigger tire in the rear for instance a 130 versus the stock 120 which also changes the gear ratio.

    • @ronmower3694
      @ronmower3694 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      a 130 vs a 120 is the width,not how tall it is. only the 80/90/ would do that so a 120/80/19 would be shortr than a 120/90/19. not being a smart ass,my brother

    Whatever gearing you run, get the PBI countershaft sprocket as it is wider and will protect your countershaft splines from damage, this is a known issue on the 650L.

    This might be a little long winded, but hopefully not confusing. A lot of people go with lower gearing but never talk about performance outside of the trails. I recently watched a video of a guy touring the country on a DR650 fitted with a 14t front. He says that it makes it a faster bike. Not top speed, but throughout the rev range, in every gear. The theory being that the torque increase applies in every gear, not just first on single track. So I’m wondering if this is something you have found, or have you not focused on that part. I put a 16t on my street bike, and while people focus on highway performance and lower revs in top speed, I found that it seemed to increase the top speed of every gear, making it more useable on some city streets. Less shifting. Just curious to see what you think, if it applies the other way as well.

    • @techjimmi
      @techjimmi  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I find the bike more useable through its entire speed range now.

    I went back to 15 /45 I just didn't care for it winding out on the road at around 55 mph , now it just cruises at 65 . I did lower it I like it ,I need to lower forks a bit now see how that is . New dual sport tires . I'm just enjoying the ride now . Is seems a bit loose on front end , need to try 1/8 in lower on forks then up to 3/4 if that doesn't do it .

    I've been looking at bikes & liked the 500x but then I saw this one.....lol, it seems the manufacture put a gear that could end up
    stripping the splines? What a nightmare if it happens to you & it would if I'd bought it... but not now b/c I know about it. So you
    can do 90 or cruise at 70mph w/o any problems? Living where I do, using the highway is a must & it's 75mph ruling out most
    smaller bikes. I could tool along at 60 but that's dangerous & it's also a danger running at 75 w/o having in more power that'll
    get you out of trouble. Yeah, I'm all caught up in what I need based on the intent for the bike. Thanks for your video. peace

  • @vernlochtefeld1626

    Is 15/45 too tall or do you just need more low to mid range power to make it perfect?
    If 14/45 was perfect as you said why did you load the bike up on the trailer to take it home?
    Really on the power that you currently have a 14/48 might be your perfect compromise.
    I always like to first free up and or to a reasonable & economic point make more power before sorting out gearing. Displacement is fine because you have plenty of torque. While 40 hp is sufficient 60 like they got out of the xr650r would be lots of fun without apparently going off the envelope in terms of reliability.
    I don’t know what you can get cost effectively but I think I would research that before settling on gears & chain. 🎯🤷‍♂️

    • @techjimmi
      @techjimmi  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is a prime example of trying to make an XR-L into something it’s not. It’s not a race bike. It doesn’t need 60hp. I believe this ratio is perfect for ME because it FEELS right. I trailered to the trails because I live an hour and a half from them… don’t be judgy.

    • @CenCaBORL_Explorers
      @CenCaBORL_Explorers 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      lol gearing is an easy way to change the ratio.. can do it in minutes vs hrs to tear down an engine.. stop trying to over think things that arent your idea... a 14/48 is nearly identical to 15/45 ratio.. the 14 will give a quicker response. my vstrom has a 17t front, i felt it was too tall off road so i went with a 16t.. ill probably go with a 14/45 or 14/48 on the xrL.. will depend on what 65mph sounds like rpm wise.. my max hiway speed..

  • @DBAUG
    @DBAUG 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

    You are wrong! You don't need to change the chain in 48/14. On the contrary, the distance between the axles is the same as in 15/45, which comes original on the bike.
    The XR600 comes from the factory with 14/48 and they share the same swingarm and the same anchoring points on the chassis and in both, the motorcycle comes with a 110 link chain and the chain adjusters remain in the same adjusting point.

    • @techjimmi
