    Great video, nice to see how the bypass valves work and the Mann definately looks more "stout"? I suppose unless you have a problem with your engine or you cut open every filter you change you will never know if a filter has failed. Mann was on my list of three filters and you have made my mind up, cheers. 48 year old 1600GT Ford crossflow.

    Not entirely sure on the issue, overall filter area is about the same, ECP is build cheaper and sells cheaper and does the exact same job?

  • @GretatheEvilGremlin
    @GretatheEvilGremlin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I don't really get why the hits on ECP here. You can by these brands anywhere online, and make a conscious choice on price and quality. Where's the problem in a Crosland filter not being the same quality as a Mann or Bosch? There's not going to be much difference in price when they're cheap parts anyway.

    I am neither for or against Euro Car Parts, but when you started, I thought that maybe you were onto
    something, but when you opened up the canisters it was Fairly evident that there was hardly any difference, surely the paper element of the English Crossland filter was easily as big in actual
    filter volume as the German (VW) made Mann filter. As for the glue, times have moved on a fair distance since crimping metal to paper, with the industrial glues now being manufactured they are not affected at all by oil/heat, or both together. I don't know but I thought your very biased comments were way off the mark. I hope I am wrong but have you any connection with Mann / Crossland. EURO CAR PARTS, in any connection whatsoever.
    regards Colin.

    • @L2B2011
      @L2B2011  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Colin, I have no connections to any manufacturer. Glue failure in filters certainly does still occur, there are plenty of photos of such failures (albeit usually from Americans using Fram filters) on the bobistheoilguy.com forums. It's interesting that you refer to the Crosland as an English filter - Crosland is now just a name that ECP bought to print on imported filters. Nothing is manufactured by Crosland in this country and the quality of a given filter may vary depending on the supplier used.
      The filter I cut open wasn't as terrible as I expected, but it also wasn't objectively as good as the Mann. Given the very minimal (99p) price difference and the job it's doing I'll stick with the Germans.

    9:25 the open end of the cheap filter is IMO poorer quality than the fully capped ends of the Mann.
    If the oil comes from the outside and pushes inwards to exit from the threaded hole I think the Crosland filter will do the job, but I wouldn't want it on a car I valued, only on a beater I didn't care about. The danger is that if a garage does your service they may fit the cheapest - but I suppose that's better than a garage who just leaves the old filter on.

    There's also a popular theory that Mann from Eurocarparts isn't the same quality as Mann from OEMs. For example Mann is the OEM for some of the German car manufacturers and apparently the ones bought from dealerships are much better than the ones bought from Eurocarparts.

    tend to order Bosch stuff from ECP in the past, this time I ordered Crossland. The Crossland airfilter was a few millimetres too long and wouldnt quite click in the airbox (tried various things to squeeze it in, dont bother). re the Oil filter, it is not like the usual ones you see in the pictures, it had a plastic piece to fit into it, wasnt happy. I popped into the store as I know a keyworker who could, & they would not take returns during the epidemic !? So have got to wait now! Ordered off ebay and was cheaper, i tried a Bueprint airfilter as was great quality. Fed up of their stupid sales crap. still cheaper to amazon/ebay it.

    That Crossland oil filter is actually a rebadged *HENGST* oil filter. I now recognise the construction from this other video: th-cam.com/video/X1U_Nv79aQQ/w-d-xo.html So it's still a top quality German oil filter (made in their Poland plant), which you can use with confidence.

    I don't think the Crossland one was to bad this time, probably not as bad as a fram for instance, but it would be hit and miss and depend on who supplied the generic filter at that time.
    I always buy Mann because I had a fram from a local once and it was terrible quality, swapped it within a week.

    I just very recently did an oil change on my 2006 Suzuki 2.0 GV, @ 83 K, prior to that I used a TJ oil filter ( i do my own oil changes now) because i have had problems with the Suzuki original part , (fitted during dealer service) on two occasions developing leaks at the oil filter gasket at around 3.5 K warranting the need to do a premature oil change. Both the TJ & Crosland filters are exactly the same size as the " Original" Suzuki logo,d part which would suggest that , that is a good thing?, because access down there is limited and the sizing is as such for a good reason. I bought my Crosland from halfords as it was in stock , I dont believe Halfords would sell poor products. And while its true that the Crosland box does not state the county of Manufacture, during the engine service I described , i fitted a new Bosch air filter and on the box it stated "made in South Korea" to use quote marks once " All that glitters aint gold" . I asked my trusted garage to renew my Serpentine belt recently and was surprised to see "Made in Argentina" stamped on it , just saying. but having said that, if the Crosland gives me similar trouble then i will look at other brands , including Bosch. Nice Video.

    Honestly I've never had or family an engine issue related to oil or filters, always used the cheapest filter and fully synthetic available on cars all the way up to 320k miles.
    On a 100k+ car despite perfect regular maintenance it's always something else that scrap's a car eg. failed injector's, timing belt/chain due to design fault/seized pump's, ECU, DPF, cracked heads etc...
    Even had 30k cars require engine a complete replacement under warranty.
    Save your money, but keep up with regular maintenance and correct spec oil.

    Luckily I've never bought a crosland filter from them. I usually go with Man or Mahle although I did once use a Bosch air and oil filter from them. Like you say, the price difference isn't that much anyway and you can tell the crosland air filter is absolute rubbish (I'd guess it has roughly 1/5th the surface area, for my car the crosland air filter is almost like a flat layer of filter meterial instead of having dense ridges like the other 3 from Man, Mahle and bosch).

    In many cases I don't think it's worth going for anything other than the filter supplied by the car's manufacturer.
    When looking at the overall cost of running a car, the extra few pounds spent on a genuine filter is insignificant if you treat it as insurance that gives peace of mind, particularly when aftermarket parts suppliers play tricks like this. It's a minefield that can easily be avoided.

    I was not convinced by this video, comparing a used "swollen" oil filter material length against a new one - you said it yourself "they are not that dissimilar in length as I thought".... "this is not a very scientific comparison"... They would probably be exactly the same length brand new unused. Also from what i could see the cheaper company had worked out how to use less metal and length casing to achieve the same filtration as again you said yourself "the filter material is the same height" so they are more economical with the earth's resources and they are actually better for using less and charging less. This comparison is worthless.
