    I was recently a parts guy for a local dealership's tire and auto center, we used those filters on almost car except the Mitsubishi that were under warranty. We were buying those for about $1.85 each.

    Independent test have shown that the old paper filters do a better job than the silicon ones.
    The plastic inner core may not be such a bad idea as it will allow better flow.
    If the oil is changed regularly...3000-5000miles the element will catch pretty much most of the deposits.

    It looks like filter made by MANN Hummell which is owner of Purolator and WIX. It is likely the cheapest version of WIX, NAPA they make for generic applications. This product is not out there to make a large profit but to make you come to the store. The construction and quality is adequate. It meets OEM requirements. At current price of $2.99 it is a good value proposition.

    Fram XG 7317 for my 06 Honda Ridgeline. Full synthetic media with wire backing metals end caps metal center tube silicone ADBV and the rough grip coat to grip the can. Excellent filter for under $10.00 at Walmart.

      I recently purchased a Fram Ultra # XG7317 for our ACURA MDX, and when
      I cut it open to see what's inside, there was NO Wire Screen Backing. Thank God!
      They got rid of that bulky screen to make room for MORE PLEATS, which makes a better oil filter.
      We're told that the Wire Screen and the Coil Spring are features, but they are actually BUGS !!

    supertech oil and their oil filters are the best if you daily drive with 3k oil changes that's pretty much 98% driver out there so unless you're racing your car, supertech oil will do fine

    Often times the quick change oil places use champion labs and rebranded filters.
    Champion labs makes supertech , STP, ACDelco filters and many more. They are pretty good for what they are and personally think they are better than the “orange can “ filter.
    The other MFG you will see are some sort of WIX made filter .

    You can't really tell anything by looks. The important thing is how well the material filters out contaminants. You would have to look at the micron rating. Metal or nylon doesn't matter its the ability to capture contaminants that matters.

    • @SlikLizrd
      @SlikLizrd ปีที่แล้ว

      Only a few Oil Filter Makers put the Micron Rating on the box.
      Best I've ever seen is the BOSCH FILTECH media- ISO-4548-12 -- AT 20 Microns.
      NOT "greater than" 20 Microns -- AT 20 Microns.

    Is mobile one extended performance oil filter really that great? It has 99% plus filtration but it’s a 30 µm rating which doesn’t seem to be super impressive besides the fact that it apparently can last 20,000 miles if you drive like a grandma in very good conditions.

    Motorcraft FL-A1 filters have been hard to find. Found 1 finally at Rural King. They had this Prime Guard filter right next to it for the same application. It was $2.99 but it was noticeably heavier than the Motorcraft and seemed like a decent made filter so I grabbed one of these too. Just for a spare. Thanks for cutting them open. Looks like it could be made much much worse so I’ll hold on to it for emergencies. $2.99 and they had lots of them.

    Does it seem like the synthetic media on some filters like the XP and Amsoil have to have a wire back because it’s not as strong of a material but at the same time it traps smaller particles?

    • @SlikLizrd
      @SlikLizrd ปีที่แล้ว

      NO. Forget that Wire Screen Backing -- it's now obsolete. The filter makers that used it have abandoned that bulky Wire Screen -- to make room for MORE PLEATS.
      They got rid of that stupid Coil Spring, too -- In favor of the Steel Retainer.

    Nice videos sir! I am a fan. I am also a “filter cutter” and have noticed some filters namely Baldwin, that are slightly collapsed after use. These filters are rated from 18 down to 9 microns depending on the application and I can verify that on an oil change after 5000 miles the oil is the cleanest that I have ever seen! Almost like it came out of the bottle! Obviously the filter was still filtering and not bypassing. I don’t really know what to make of this but I agree that I wouldn’t run this more then 5000 miles but as long as I keep to that rule it seems to me that this “collapsing problem” is just a trade off for amazing filtration? Disappointing to see that drain back valve stiffen up so badly. Your thoughts please.

    • @nebur9180
      @nebur9180 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of cource the oil is clean after 5000 miles. That is such a short timeframe. It isn't because of the filter dummy. It is a money mechanism.

    • @puppygadget3189

      Hi Roger I also use the Baldwin oil filters And have found that the Baldwin oil filters work fantastic . I Only use Amsoil Z-Rod high zinc full synthetic oil in all my cars and small engines. The Oil looks very clean now after switching to the Baldwin filters say 5000 miles. I have not cut any open so after hearing you say you found the Baldwin filter started collapsing I better start cutting them open and thank you for commenting about that.

    He says make sure you change your oil then he talks up to 18,000 miles oil changes. Irv Gordon changed his oil every 3500 miles with Castrol GTX and his Volvo went over 3,000,000 miles. Best oil is clean oil. Cheapest insurance for your engine.

    • @tomorrowcomestoday1621
      @tomorrowcomestoday1621 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With original engine parts? No reconstruction? 3 million miles you said?

    • @marketingmajor8126
      @marketingmajor8126 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tomorrowcomestoday1621 The engine was rebuilt twice but still the original block. First rebuild was at 680,000 miles. Irv took the car to the Volvo dealer requesting the rebuild but after the Volvo technicians checked the vehicle including compression, they informed him that there was nothing wrong with the engine and that it didn't need the rebuild. Irv insisted on having it done anyhow. The next rebuild was around the 2 million mile mark after Irv reported some trouble getting up some steep mountain passes in the Rocky mountains. At Irv's passing in 2018 the car still had the original transmission and everything was running perfectly.
