Worse than politics are discussions as to which organization within a style is teaching kata correctly. More interesting, is the interpretation of the same kata by different styles. That horse left the barn ages ago as the proteges of those we recognize as Soke went out into the world to explore their own roads. When one considers the inventiveness and creativity of a Dan Djurdjevic, for example, what he brings to his art, and based upon his written philosophies, we have witnessed the evolution of a new style within which many classics are taught. Knowledge, enlightenment and self-improvement are what is to be sought. What works best, and why, should be the subject of discussion. Enfield Sensei contributes to that discussion, much to the advantage of all.
And its funny because at first people make fun of it because it looks weird, and then you combine all the katas and movements and holy man, you can see some serious combat moves in it.

Not surprising as shotokan uses kata with shuri te and tomari the origins while Goju Ryu uses Naha te forms/kata. Very different feel and techniques. One Goju kata might be similar to you is Goju Ryu kata Seisan(13)and shotokan's hangetsu(half moon)for formerly called seishan(13)

So hardcore, inner core, fast twitch. Goju students have hard bones. They, we break bones. I Miss it. Rodney Hu Sr student here, Stockton, CA. Rodney Hu Jr. RIP Love you bro. Killed by a low life sob.
This type of Karate style; does not believe in high kicks! My Sensi told me if you want to kick some one in the head make his head come down to your feet. This style of Karate is all about balance and a good amount of floor fighting, With emphasises on power - power does come from the ground so you should have you feet on the ground to tap into it! The style was meant for power to break threw Samurai armor (at least armor of the time) . High kicks are nice to look at but leave more vunabilites if excuitted well can be very devastating blows but may not be safe or practical to use at certain situations besides legal issues with every one carrying video cameras these days . A lot harder trying to convince a jury you killed some one with a Taekwondo spinning kick to the head that it was self defense. While more conservative moves are easier to articulate to police, public, juries
Does anyone recommend a specific order to learn the katas? I've always loved martial arts, but only now at the age of 30 I finally managed to actually make time to practice it. However, since I've been learning on my own, it's hard to find direction amongst so much vast, but sparse, information available online. In sum, what should be my stepway? Thank you everyone!
The order presented here is the same as the one myself and others in the Goju-Ryu organisation followed for decades. I highly recommend finding a Dojo with an experienced instructor to help you with your journey. The knowledge, details and minutiae of the style taught by a legit teacher within a keen group are *invaluable and essential* to the learning process. The beginning kata, while deceptively simple, can be the most difficult to master. I wish you all the best with finding the right path for you :)
Hi Anderson, if you cannot find a dojo close to where you live then we have distance learning programs that may help you. If you are interested please reply here and I can provide you with more information.
Brad Gray Watching these kata's through my 2015 eyes and as an IOGKF Yudansha I can say very little has changed. The IOGKF and Higaonna Sensei have remained very consistent.
Steve Maggers Yes Steve, there was never a great difference anyway. However, having trained with Higaonna Sensei for so long on a regular basis I'm sure it is his teachings that triumph here :-).
Brad Gray Brad, what I notice most about watching these kata is a slight pelvic tilt (in the wrong direction). That said I (hopefully) know a lot more about what the kata is supposed to be doing nowadays. Therefore when I watch my kata (on anyone's for that matter) I am looking at the transitions and their implications rather than a specific way of "doing" things. I think it's also interesting to note that at the old Jundokan dojo, before any of the splits that took place, senior teachers expressed and therefore taught the kata uniquely. For myself now following Taira Masaji Sensei I practice kata with much more emphasis on moving from the center using koshi.
GKCgoju Sure thing no doubt. I have trained with Higaonna Sensei and hope to again his health permitting. I've also had the good fortune to have trained with several of the IOGKF senior instructors over the last few years and watching your video makes me smile because your execution of the kata's is how I have also been taught. That makes me happy to see. Kata is the essence of Okinawan Goju Ryu, to quote Higaonna Sensei, and the expression of those kata is how we evolve as students of the art in my view. I've enjoyed watching your videos over the months including those of Taira Masaji Sensei and I've always thought to seek out the opportunity to train with you guys. I've particularly enjoyed the way bunkai is broken down and demonstrated.
The kata are performed in the order taught for this particular branch of goju ryu karate. The ratio of kicks to hand techniques is a reflection of self-defense encounters as opposed to a competitive arena.
I'm gradually learning my way through the Goju Ryu katas and I often refer back to this video to get an idea of the overall flow of the kata. Could you perhaps write in some time markers to bookmark the beginnings of each? Thanks for posting at any rate. A very useful video.
Great, glad it is helping. We also have available for purchase very detailed instructional DVDs for each kata if you are interested:goju-carlsbad.sites.zenplanner.com/retail.cfm?Category=Video%20Files. I'm pretty sure you can add your own time markers in your own comment. If not let me know and I'll add some.
Seeing the comments below.. I think some are missing the point in this video (as I see it.). I don't think so much of the .3600 hip rotation as the tempo of the kata being carried out as well as the delivery. Sharp and Crisp with the pauses in between as intended.
+john calampiano There is a lot of "basic" bunkai for the goju katas on TH-cam if you look around. I'm working mostly with a more usable context for the bunkai. We have many examples of this type of bunkai on our channel. We also sell DVDs and video files that analyze the katas and their application in great detail.

Hopefully you and your friend help each other to improve through hard training. Good luck.
Thanks for sharing very nice of you!
Troy Lansaw You are welcome. We love to share so that we can learn also.
Very nice
Thanks.
Good job Paul..Keep up the good spirit.
Excelente. Muy buena técnica y espíritu!
soo much better than a lot of "so called" grand masters that have jacked up this style . well done
I am a shotokan practitioner and am totally unfamiliar with the katas in this video. Nevertheless I liked the video because the sensei who performed them moved well, with great strength and speed. Thank you for posting!
Very good. Thank You.
This is some real deal kata my friend I'm first Dan shorin ryu but I really like these kata and would love to learn them in depth
hello from fiji , i guess im the only one left in fiji unofficially following iogkf everyone else in fiji has affiliated to other goju ryu so hopefully i intend to restart iogkf in fiji again
Felix Fremlin good luck with your training.
So hardcore, inner core, fast twitch. Goju students have hard bones. They, we break bones. I Miss it. Rodney Hu Sr student here, Stockton, CA. Rodney Hu Jr. RIP Love you bro. Killed by a low life sob.
I was very sorry to hear about Rodney Hu Jr. Sensei's passing. May he Rest In Peace.
Karate é uma vida
Yes, for many people.
Very nice 👍😊
Thank you 😊
you move like a longer leaner higaonna! Nice job! you should be happy!
Thank you.
I found it very strange to notice the kicks are very low and the katas explore short movements such as elbow strikes. Very interesting nonetheless.
Was not meant to be a attack on you just an explanation with reasoning :)
@@josephfaraci A high kick can end a fightin in seconds.
ryvoltz High kicks for what? Life Is not a competition
edgar brown it’s not the main purpose
My favourite martial art ,my everyday use in real fight's
Como puedo aprender esos katas si soy de un estilo diferente ?
You can learn the kata/s in detail here: gkcglobalshop.com/collections/kata-instructional
Damn dude, you got some fire in those moves.
Thanks from Texas.
Ah muy bueas Katas :) me gusta su ejecución.
deep respect to you sir!
Beautiful katas. Similar to Shotokan. Powerful, precise and artful.
+vikotto Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! I am looking for "Nissa Chi", I'm probably not spelling it right🙆. Have you done a video on that kata?
Do you mean Niseishi?
@@GKCgoju yes I think so.
@@thandaxaba Understood. I don't practice Niseishi so no video I'm afraid.
the kata are very well formed, excellent performance. I just hope you're breathing. I was taught the breath is every part a weapon as your body.
Thank you.
No, thank you for putting them all in one place! It was a VERY well performed execution.
Good performance
Thank you.
Be interesting to see what those katas look like now....and what are your thoughts about watching what your katas were then?
Brad Gray Watching these kata's through my 2015 eyes and as an IOGKF Yudansha I can say very little has changed. The IOGKF and Higaonna Sensei have remained very consistent.
Interesting... good stuff.
Great video ❤❤❤like this.
Thank you 🤗
Are the kata listed in degree of difficulty? Also why so few kicks ? Thanks.
Okay, I've added the timestamps.
@@GKCgoju Thank you. Oos.
@@JohnnoDorber You're welcome. Thanks for the suggestion.
Seeing the comments below.. I think some are missing the point in this video (as I see it.). I don't think so much of the .3600 hip rotation as the tempo of the kata being carried out as well as the delivery. Sharp and Crisp with the pauses in between as intended.
Thanks Sensei...these really help !
+soilinc Glad to hear.
If possible, kindly upload the bunkais (application) of the katas please. Thank you for this inspiring video,
+john calampiano There is a lot of "basic" bunkai for the goju katas on TH-cam if you look around. I'm working mostly with a more usable context for the bunkai. We have many examples of this type of bunkai on our channel. We also sell DVDs and video files that analyze the katas and their application in great detail.
+GKCgoju Thanks for the info. I'll search it in the net.
john calampiano good luck.
