6:48 The end of this video is worth its weight in gold
"It's not about the style as much as it is about the teacher, and if you're not willing to think outside the box, you're never going to master the art… Tradition is not about preserving the ashes, but rather about keeping the flame burning because that's how the art stays alive."

There's actually a song by The Longest Johns called "Ashes." They're a group that's focused on sea shanties but rather than just staying fixated on only the traditional songs they also add to the genre. They got hate from the traditionalists stuck in what was aptly called "the classical mess," and the song is their reply.
"Watch that old fire as it flickers and dies
That once blessed the household and lit up our lives
It shone for the friends and the clinking of glasses
I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes
Capture the wild things and bring them in line
And own what was never your right to confine
The lives and the loves and the songs are what matters
I'll tend to the flame; you can worship the ashes..."
It conveys a surprisingly similar message to the summation here at the end of the video.

As a Wing Chun instructor myself, the comment about "I was told this was used for finding your opponent in the dark..." I immediately thought, "well, that's like the idea of the Chum Kiu form (Wing Chun's second form that means 'Seeking Bridge'). You're seeking a bridge/contact with your opponent, and it's very much like reaching out in the dark. You don't know what you're gonna run into, until you make physical contact to use the skills developed from the Chi-Sau training. So, that may have been a metaphor for what it actually is, and just got lost in time/translation." Besides being in the Muk Yan Jong Fat (Wooden Dummy Techniques), that movement is also found in the Chum Kiu (Seeking Bridge) form!

    • @mr-oso-8055
      @mr-oso-8055 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I'm not even familiar with the move. But, I knew it was metaphoric when he said it. I'm sure he did also... I would hope. I thought he was just complimenting the instructor by explaining it like that.

    • @streamofconsciousness8312
      @streamofconsciousness8312 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

Yea in the tradition I am learning they call that technique that he referred to with that metaphor as "sinewalli" or "cinewali", idk how you would spell it, but its common in phillipino and japanese karate systems. I think the "finding ones way in the dark" is because sometimes we practice it with our eyes closed, because its all about developing that tactile grip. Its like a sticky hands drill but with more real life striking and distancing involved. Its one of my favorite drills

The IP Man movies did a good job of depicting the rhythm and almost meditative nature of the sound when practicing on the wooden dummy. There was a Zen to it, a flow. I imagine anyone really practiced in the wooden dummy would find themselves getting into that state fairly easily.

    Somethings to note:
As you showed in your trips to China, White Crane influenced karate, and the birthplace of White Crane is 永春 Yong Chun (Wing Chun in Cantonese). The art in the video is 咏春 Wing Chun, the same pronunciation. There's also another lineage called 永春 in Hong Kong. Wing Chun is literally an offshoot of White Crane. Sometimes White Crane was just called 永春拳 Wing Chun boxing, there are still styles of Crane that use this name in Taiwan. And that's how Wing Chun is related to karate 😃
Another note: I've seen Goju ryu practicioners using a form of wooden dummy, maybe one day you can make a video on that as well!

Great video and loving your content 🙏 please note as an instructor for Ip Man and Ip Chun lineage we are taught the dummy is a moulding tool and shouldn’t be used to desensitise your arms and definitely not break your hand. Contact and feeling is important in feeling what your opponent is doing, so you want to keep the nerves active. (One inch energy can be practiced on the dummy by placing your finger tips on the main body then using the palm to develop explosive power.) I really agree with your open minded philosophy and I’m looking forward to your next wing chun video 🙏

I loved the message of this video.
In my school we study various lineages of Wing Chun (from now going back in time towards the Shaolin roots: Hong Kong, Red Boats, Chi Sim, Hung Fa Kuen, etc) and the beautiful part is: the more back in time you go, the more you learn of the Wing Chun Formula. It's a series of principles of time (tempo/distance), space (positioning, footwork and dividing the 3d space in sections) and energy (faat ging and other methods for hitting hard) that guides you in the martial science.
Once you grasp the fundamentals of the science and express them in your way, there's art, there's style!
It's ironic how people got so attached to Bruce that they forgot what he teached: learn the science, do not get hung up on other people's styles.

I train under the same lineage as Sifu Beddar, so it’s nice to see others involved around the globe 🌎 I Always enjoy his videos and the way they train in France. Extremely skilled Sifu.

I hope you do another video with Sifu Beddar. Jesse, if you’re ever in the states, New Jersey to be exact. Look up Master Keith Mazza of Traditional Wing Chun. He is chief instructor of North America Traditional Wing Chun Association. Master Mazza’s Martial Arts background is extensive! Not to mention real world experience as security and law enforcement trainer. He also went undefeated in cage fighting in his early days. Very humble individual with a wealth of knowledge.

Excellent video, it is always amazing to watch real masters apply their art!
You mention commonality between actions here in Wing Chun, in Karate, and also in Filipino martial arts -- I'll add that you find the same principles and very similar actions in Traditional Fencing.
All goes back to your analogy of getting to the mountain peak and finding it's all one!

I hope that you will conduct interviews with the stars of martial arts films in the eighties and nineties.

Thank you for the video! This is another proof showing that all martial arts are just 1 as we are 1 race. As long as we learn properly, any Art is applicable.
I myself is a Wing Chun practitioner, too, and I really admire those who connect different arts together, not to see the pros and cons only, but to show each art's stylistic beauty and wisedom.
    Thank you 🙏

Yoku yatta! Hitting the nail on the head @KARATEbyJesse . It’s about thinking outside of the box. The irony is that many Okinawan styles actually did put all the techniques inside the box aka keeping it “secret”. You only find this out late or should I say early mornings in Okinawa after many orions, when a local sensei calls you up and shows something you’ve never seen before. Ps. JP here from South Africa, Cape Town needs another training session🥋🇿🇦

Jesse, great video, as always! I'm surprised you didn't talk about the most important aspect of this kind of training... the healing process. Most Southern Chinese Martial Arts have some sort of toughening regime; dummy practice, blocking drills, etc. But they almost always use various liniments (usually dit da jow 跌打酒) to promote healing after the practice. Healing + toughening (slowly) over time = far fewer broken bones due to training. 🙂

You're videos inspired me to pursue karate. I started training Isshin Ryu 3 years ago. Now, my age is 43. During the last 20+ years I trained different martial arts, but never karate because I perceived it as not being "realistic" enough. Your content is very thought-provoking. The fun and light-heartedness you bring to the audience is needed to keep martial arts in balance. Thank you!

Thank you SO much for including the part about why Wing Chun uses the knuckles that it does. I have seen far too many videos (elsewhere) that do not explain the why, leading many to think they can punch this way effectively to the head without hurting their hand. "Punch soft parts" should go wthout saying? No, no. NO. Definitely say that part! And you did, so bless you for that.
I never knew Wing Chun has the same leg catches that I like to use. Fascinating.

It's amazing seeing bits and pieces of kata I've trained, in those fast fluid movements. The close-in fighting of wing chun is fantastic, something I feel we could use a lot more of across the board, in karate. I've trained almost 4 decades and I can send in the long range cruise missiles with the best of them with fantastic range and power; but I am not great in a tight close fight. Once the distance closes I feel violated in the worst fashion. I mean, lets be real, close combat is where nearly every fight is going to end up. We should train more for those uncomfortable (to us) distances.
