Trinity Blood the anime isn't a good adaptation and suffers from cramming two timelines into one, but it's a stretch to say it's plagiarism. The novels are political stories set in two different timelines with two different main characters. (The early timeline focuses on Abel, the later one has Esther as the focus.) Sure you can say it's derivative if you boil down the themes to such a basic state, but that isn't a just assessment. I am not saying the anime is good, but the story is definitely unique and of it's own. The novels are very different, and trying to say the author just ripped of Trigun and Hellsing is just insulting. The anime is a mess, and there's a lot you can criticize it for, but the novels and manga are quite good in world building and political intrigue.
Remake is bad wording. It needs a hard reboot. We don't need a repeat of this disaster, we need the 2 seperate timelines. With artists that can bring the manga style to anime form. One thing I HATED about the 2000s - early 2010s was the generic artstyle that most anime shared. Pretty sure there's a joke out there about swapping hairstyles and eye colors for every girl character back then and realizing their face was the same shape. The early days of computer animations downside vs hand drawn. Thankfully we are finally escaping those days... ...with exceptions...seven deadly sins against animation. Dear god reboot it please. Id take the 3D some people were complaining about when they saw the sequel trailer over that awful framework they used.😢
I remember hearing about this series, a horror collection shop near my place had a DVD of it and the DVD did not even work which kinda cemented my opinion on the series, seeing Sage go into full detail is a nice form of clarity though

17:08 I never understood the hate Studio Gonzo got. I thought their animes they created are fine and their animation seems to be high quality compared to modern animes today which feels downgraded the animation and their heroes. Abel is a dorky but lovable character. But also has a tragic back story which motivates him to kill the evil vampires in his Crusnik form. That's a cool character to me. And what vampire-killing hero do we have in 2023 anime? Richter Belmont, a crybaby vampire hunter who let's a little girl call him a "Wanker". What a wuss. And this may be an evil thing to say but I'm glad that Trinity Blood rips-off other stories like Trigun, Equilibrium, Hellsing, The Matrix and more. I know Plagiarism is bad and many movies and tv shows do that in the past. Like Star Wars and Starchaser. Compared to the Woke, the DEI, race-swapping and Pandering age of 2023 American films and TV shows, at least there is a sense of respect with the Japanese stories try to entertain people who at least rip-off movies and shows of the past that they appreciate. To me, Trinity Blood, even though you call it "Plagiarism", I call it entertaining and a guilty pleasure.
Japanese copyright is supposedly more fuzzy anyway, I doubt Hirano Kouta, Yasuhiro Nightow, Hiromu Arakawa or especially Hirohiko Araki really cared that someone might've cribbed from them in some way or another. Because that's likely a BIG aspect for manga/light novels/etc and especially in the massive amount of concepts that are made into stories in Japan, especially since the 80s or 90s

First off, no worries. You've gone through a lot dude. Just keep being awesome. With that said, great video. I remember liking Trinity Blood when I watched it back a little over ten years ago when it was on Netflix. I thought it was cool, but I was also only a dumb barley out of highchool basically 19-20 year old. Funny enough I watched Trigun before it about a year prior. That was probably why I liked it because I liked Trigun and it probably made me think of Trigun without really noticing it. For the longest time I remember thinking it was cool until I just pretty much forgot about it. I didn't forget about Trigun though. I still think Trigun is an awesome anime. I can remember a lot of the series despite watching it over then years ago. I however can barely remember much of Trinity Blood. This video made me realize that. Imitation may be the sincerest form a flattery, but blatant plagiarism is just lazy and uninspiring. And I guess makes it pretty forgettable too.

I think a very good part of the popularity Trinity Blood had was just the aesthetics, specially on clothing and architecture, I still have a few mangas and light novels on my bookcase, and the clothing design, specially if you are into goth/lolita/dandy fashion is simply one of the best I have seen ever, and lets remember this kind of alternative type of clothing got really popular around the mid 2000s, when this anime premiered. An ex-GF did a cosplay of Sister Esther on her queen attire and is, to this day, one of the most beautiful and impressive cosplays i can think about.
Oh, it definitely fits into a subgenre of Anime Catholicism, it's actually the image used to feature on the page. There's also Chrono Crusade, Qwaser of Stigmata and Hellsing. Even more if you look in manga, like Testarotho (4 volumes, cancelled sadly)

I watched this anime for the first time this year with my wife. We agreed that the concepts were cool but the execution was just awful. The "fight" scenes left a lot to be desired and the vagueness of the vampire origins were confusing instead of intriguing.
Yeah my wife is curious about the books. The pace of the anime was so slow at times that we had more entrainment out of watching it at 1.25 playback speed.

I personally liked Trinity Blood but for the look, setting and concepts rather than the characters. In other words it has more style than substance but I really digged the style. I also read a few volumes of the light novel and I'd say that the story was somewhat better in that it had a kind of clever plot twist in the second volume.
The only thing that annoys me with Trinity Blood is that other than the Meh one from the anime, there won't be an actual ending due to the authors death

I remember enjoying Trinity Blood just enough that deapite how derivative the anime felt that when the LN's started getting an official translation I started buying them, and just temember how much more interesting and complex a story they felt verses the anime. Been a long time since I had my copies to go back and revisit them though thanks to multiple moves, but definitely remember that bybthe end of what was available for the LNs Incould see why someone would want to adapt them, that it was Gonzo at the height of their content farm days is the worst part. Definitely feels like an IP that could've bemefited by a more passionate and considered team to eleveatw it just that little bit.
The anime really missed the mark. It's such a shame that this is the way so many people were introduced to the series, because the characters as presented to the novels (and more faithful manga) are head and shoulders above all of this. The changes they made really wreck the overall flow and mood of the series.
I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the light novels, but they seem virtually impossible to find in my country - the best I could get was an offering on Amazon for what amounted to 500 USD and that was just volume 1!
It's basically a Japanese WH40k setting, at the time when WH40k wasn't known at all. Maybe if you are older and more well-read you would have spotted the plagiarisms and similarities, but when I watched both Trigun and Trinity Blood basically back to back they looked pretty different to me

I remember the comic shop I played Magic at as a preteen in the late 90s had a day where the Warhammer players would come in and do their thing. It was way too expensive and complicated for my broke ass though, so I only had a vague familiarity with it. Even magic was too pricey for me really tho. Always saw Abel Nightroad as the missing link between Kenshin Himura, Vash the Stampede and Hellsings Alucard. He's goofy, lovable to children, loves the ladies, but has a darker side of his badassary. 😂
Visually he also looked a lot like the protagonists of Nightwalker and Eat Man, given that those are IPs from the mid to late 90s I would say they also might had been part of the inspiration / influence.

@@Moonhermit- The director would be a big part of it, if Shirobako taught me anything about the process behind the scenes They didn't have Milly in the first season, but don't worry, she's coming, they just had a substitute to better develop Meryl, though I'm not sure if she was better developed in the manga, since this is kind of filling in gaps really, like the best kind of anime filler

@@Moonhermit- Many times in the 90s and 2000s, they had enough for a season or 2 and sometimes moved so fast, they overtook the manga source material, Trigun one example of many, including the original FMA. There are several he technically referenced that could serve in that respect: JJBA Stardust Crusaders' OVA versus the admittedly VERY extensive adaptation in the 2010s. Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate is another good choice. Lots of remakes in the 2010s and early 2020s. Shaman King and Dragon Quest Dai's Adventure are 2 very good ones, in my experience While nowadays they're at least pacing it much better. Like Dr. Stone they waited a while and it's been over for a few years, yet we'll probably be getting more content for several years

I loved the manga as a kid and hated the anime, well before I actually found Trigun or Hellsing, because the anime felt stale and plain compared to the lush artwork of the manga. I think the manga will stay a little precious to me between nostalgia and the beautiful art, but I sure feel justified in not liking the anime. Nostalgia and The Isekai LN Adaptation Apocalypse makes alot of mid anime seem better than they are. I enjoy anime like Trinity Blood, Blood+ and Witch Hunter Robin way more today than I did at release. Each of them can be dry, derivative and tedious in places but at least they feel like real projects and not just LN adaptations that were carbon copied, palette swapped and re-titled
There's commonality and then there's ripping off, which seems a bit too easy an accusation when we're naturally pattern seeking and especially when it comes to things we regard as better or more original. I didn't finish the original Trigun, though in hindsight, I cam understand how those who saw Trigun first and then Trinity Blood, would see those parallels. Ripped out of context and consideration, one can say they ripped it off while...really, it's similar visuals and patterns, that's kind of how storytelling works historically Heck, even I was aware of the whole situation with Knives and Vash from the relevant Trigun 1996 episode, but that didn't make me think it was ripping it off anymore than the parallels one can draw to, say, Yu Yu Hakusho means Bleach was ripping it off.

That was not the most absurd thing to me regarding the Church in this anime, I mean a similar thing actually happened in one of those dark eras, called the Saeculum obscurum, a Pope of 21 years who might or might not had been the bastard son of a previous Pope, it was that the two real figures of power in the Church were the older siblings of the teenage Pope and IIRC they both were cardinals even though one of them is a woman, the author either had no idea how some even very basic stuff of the catholic church works or if he was aware at least if should had added a brief in-universe reason to show why the Church in that universe / timeline is so different compared to the real one.

The Kid Pope reacts like someone with autism. I swear, someone must’ve watched Trigun and thought what if I could make that, but with vampires? Also, why do anime always revert back to a Victorian style whenever it’s a very distant future?
At the risk of being one of Those Fans, the anime misses the mark by miles. I'm also not sure its fair to call it as much of a ripoff as is implied here because while the core premise is the same, Trinity Blood runs off in its own direction. I think ti's more accurate to call Trinity Blood a roleswap alternate universe than out and out plagarism - whcih the anime misses by miles. The premise can crudely be boiled down to - what if Vash died and came back as a complete mockery of himself and all he stood for, how would Knives be able to carry on that legacy? Abel's persona is modeled after Cain's original personality. Abel was the brother who hated humanity and wanted it to die so they wouldn't suffer anymore. Whereas Cain was the brother who wanted to be useful so they could co-exist peacefully - something which ultimately got him killed. When the siblings revived him using the Crusnik nanomachiens he went insane/became controlled by the nanomachines. They waged war on Earth - Abel, Cain and Seth sided with the vampires, while Lilith sided with the humans - and the siblings were in conflict for decades. Ultimately destroying chunks of civilization as it was and leaving it as it now is. Cain, being completely out of his mind and running off of fucked up computer logic, called for a meeting with Lilith and then killed her so her standing against them was no longer causing Abel pain... and he could steal her powers for himself. Which lead to Abel killing his brother a second time, and locking himself away with Lilith - ending the war and ceding the majority of the planet to humanity. Seth established the vampire civilization. There's some ambiguity as to whether Cain is actually the one who wants to destroy the world or if the man who found him (Izaak von Kampfer) is. Abel can't decide if he should try to save him or put him out of his misery. Abel still has conflicted feelings about humanity, but ultimately, he is doing what he's doing to carry on Lilith's wishes. He's putting on Cain's facade of being an all-loving, all kind saint of a person. Something the light novels & manga makes very clear because the silliness that Abel puts on really is just how Cain acts. Cain doesn't kill his subordinates, but he does scare the shit out of them by being completely unpredictable. Complete with the moments where it drops and you get a glimpse of the hatred lurking inside. The parts of his siblings he loved are subbed in to fill the holes in his own soul. The anime misses all of this by having Cain be more like Knives in his fleeting appearance. It really sucks.

I remember enjoying TB back in school days for 2 reasons: 1) I loved vampires and warhammer 40k and it had a bit of both 2) The DVD release in Russia was gorgeous - top notch dub and even tarot cards included with each volume.

Trinity blood was in a later time slot so I think the fog of tiredness gave it a lot of slack. A vampires vampire was a cool enough premise for me to enjoy. I do remember loving the ending theme though. I own the bluray and studio gonzo left an impression on me as I see I own a couple of series from their library lol

The English dub for this show is kind of interesting. Its a reminder that Troy Baker got his start in anime, its the only Funimation dub to feature Hilary Haag, Aaron Dismuke worked on it while having to deal with his voice changing, and it might feature the only character Lydia McKay has ever played that can be taken 100% seriously.

Check out the dub for Project ARMS. It's a Janky adaptation of surprisingly good manga that had a Canadian Cast where some of the adlibbed dialogue was done by Amanda Winn Lee (Yukiko Amagi and Rei Ayanami VA).
The manga is A LOT better and it explains better as well. The anime is how it is because the writer died the anime is weird messed mix of the manga and novels Cain just appears because the anime is rushed. (Esther isn't in the novels so it explains why there's random episodes without her unexplained why) Just read the manga, The anime did the fandom DIRTY and has turned away so many people.
Trinity Blood clearly took 'inspiration' from Trigun, but Vash always reminded me of Ryo Saeba, so the 'inept hero who's secretly a master shot' seems more ike a trope than a direct steal... which doesn't make it better.

Now we need to call out Trinity Blood for what it really is - a bad adaptation. And I do like the anime fine. I didn't notice the plagiarisms because, although I was aware of those anime existing, I never really watched them. But having read a few of the light novels - yeah, this anime is a very bad representative of its source material. This is what happens when you try to adapt a series of books with a LOT of intricate and interwoven plot points into what? 26 episodes? Yeesh.
Thinking about it not just in the name, but overall plot structure. Really most anime follow a structure like this. One-off episodes to entertain and introduce characters, then a serious mid-season and finale. Trinity Blood as I remember it was billed as "the new Trigun". Its way too similar, even the Good vs Evil brother dynamic.A the time I liked that because Trigun was one of the early Adult Swim anime. Ive heard that Adult Swim's early anime were there because they were poorly received in Japan, so they were cheap to import and dub. I liked the politics, being that its basically the Europe vs Eurasia, or really that the overall plot is...James Bond during the Cold War. The vampires being nobles that took responsibility and not just being bad guys was an interesting idea. If anything it became annoying whenever Evil Vampire would show up. Similarly the point that the vampires are created by non-supernatural means is also interesting.
Commonality and plagiarizing are very different so I very much disagree with you on that its plagiarizing these anime when mostly its just tropes. Like Knives and Vash are literally a play on Cain and Able in the biblical story not to mention the themes of Love and Strife. With your logic Trigun is ""ripping off"" the bible. Like you answered your own question on how it was never legally perused as plagiarism. Its because it isn't. I feel like you just didn't want to give this anime a chance in the slightest which, alright but I mean your arguments are very silly. You could have easily said it was just poorly written instead of trying to say it plagiarized.
I watched this back when it was coming out, and I finally got my torrents set up and was dead-smack in my CONSOOM EVERYTHING phase of weebdom. I don't care to revisit it at all, but I remember vaguely enjoying it, at least the first half. Trigun was also my #1 favorite anime at the time, so I guess I couldn't get too angry at getting what's basically a second serving. In all fairness, I do have a couple of good things to say about it. Right off the bat, it's got a dope opening that was my first exposure to BUCK-TICK, it's got some surprising bangers on the soundtrack (check out No.18_tactics and No.23_search mode), and the sci-fi hyper-Gothic aesthetic (especially for the airships) reminded me of proto-WH40k before I even really knew what that was. Other than the cool terminator guy, the only real standout story moment that stuck with me after all these years is the (6th?) episode called The Sword Dancer, which took place in I think Budapest. I might be misremembering a few details, but what you get out of it is a great little glimpse of what life is actually like as a human under vampire occupation. In restrospect, the vibe it's going for is very similar to the 'Cold War-era Prague' chapter of MGS4, where it's a gorgeous Old European city that goes completely dead after nightfall, except instead of staying away from the watchful eyes of Stasi spooks, it's because the designated 'prey' in a city ruled by vampires would rather stay in the relative safety of indoors. There's a palpable sense of danger around every corner, and got help you if the circumstances force you to traverse the city at night, because there's a very real chance that a passing carriage of some vampire noble would snatch you right off the streets, just because he saw a lone human and decided it could be fun to throw you into a manticore's cage to keep his guests entertained tonight. That episode IS Trinity Blood to me. It takes any cool or original thoughts from the show and almost succeeds into distilling it into something uniquely TB. Then it passes as quickly as it came, and you never get anything this cool ever again. :/

@@ToHoldNothing The sequel is hot garbage, but the original Basilisk was top 10 material for me when I first watched it. I always describe it as one of the rare 'perfect animes,' not in the sense that it has no flaws, but in the sense that it knows exactly what it wants to be and executes that vision all the way through to the end, unwaveringly. Once you watch the first episode and realize that it's just Romeo & Juliet X Ninja Scroll, you can probably predict exactly where it's going to go and even how it's gonna go about it, but it's done so well and the characters are so engaging that it doesn't matter. It'd feel more insulting if it tried to divert its course for the sake of some cheap twist. I know Bennett likes to meme on Gonzo, and they do make themselves a real easy target, but they've also put out some legit masterpieces in that era, and this is one of them. If memory serves, it's also one of the few Gonzo productions where they actually paced themselves properly and didn't run out of animation budget with 5 episodes left to go like they usually do lmao.
@@NucleaRaptor I'm familiar in a vague sense, like with a character that's nigh immortal (kind of like the main villain in Ninja Scroll) with some caveats, but that's more just my research into depictions of immortality in anime and manga. Not sure if there was a character with a Grim Reaper title in Basilisk, but I haven't watched Hellsing either and I know Walter is known as a Grim Reaper of sorts

Trinity Blood the anime isn't a good adaptation and suffers from cramming two timelines into one, but it's a stretch to say it's plagiarism. The novels are political stories set in two different timelines with two different main characters. (The early timeline focuses on Abel, the later one has Esther as the focus.) Sure you can say it's derivative if you boil down the themes to such a basic state, but that isn't a just assessment. I am not saying the anime is good, but the story is definitely unique and of it's own. The novels are very different, and trying to say the author just ripped of Trigun and Hellsing is just insulting. The anime is a mess, and there's a lot you can criticize it for, but the novels and manga are quite good in world building and political intrigue.

Remake is bad wording. It needs a hard reboot. We don't need a repeat of this disaster, we need the 2 seperate timelines. With artists that can bring the manga style to anime form. One thing I HATED about the 2000s - early 2010s was the generic artstyle that most anime shared. Pretty sure there's a joke out there about swapping hairstyles and eye colors for every girl character back then and realizing their face was the same shape. The early days of computer animations downside vs hand drawn. Thankfully we are finally escaping those days...

17:08 I never understood the hate Studio Gonzo got. I thought their animes they created are fine and their animation seems to be high quality compared to modern animes today which feels downgraded the animation and their heroes. Abel is a dorky but lovable character. But also has a tragic back story which motivates him to kill the evil vampires in his Crusnik form. That's a cool character to me. And what vampire-killing hero do we have in 2023 anime? Richter Belmont, a crybaby vampire hunter who let's a little girl call him a "Wanker". What a wuss.
And this may be an evil thing to say but I'm glad that Trinity Blood rips-off other stories like Trigun, Equilibrium, Hellsing, The Matrix and more. I know Plagiarism is bad and many movies and tv shows do that in the past. Like Star Wars and Starchaser. Compared to the Woke, the DEI, race-swapping and Pandering age of 2023 American films and TV shows, at least there is a sense of respect with the Japanese stories try to entertain people who at least rip-off movies and shows of the past that they appreciate. To me, Trinity Blood, even though you call it "Plagiarism", I call it entertaining and a guilty pleasure.
Japanese copyright is supposedly more fuzzy anyway, I doubt Hirano Kouta, Yasuhiro Nightow, Hiromu Arakawa or especially Hirohiko Araki really cared that someone might've cribbed from them in some way or another. Because that's likely a BIG aspect for manga/light novels/etc and especially in the massive amount of concepts that are made into stories in Japan, especially since the 80s or 90s

I remember liking Trinity Blood when I watched it back a little over ten years ago when it was on Netflix. I thought it was cool, but I was also only a dumb barley out of highchool basically 19-20 year old. Funny enough I watched Trigun before it about a year prior. That was probably why I liked it because I liked Trigun and it probably made me think of Trigun without really noticing it. For the longest time I remember thinking it was cool until I just pretty much forgot about it. I didn't forget about Trigun though. I still think Trigun is an awesome anime. I can remember a lot of the series despite watching it over then years ago. I however can barely remember much of Trinity Blood. This video made me realize that. Imitation may be the sincerest form a flattery, but blatant plagiarism is just lazy and uninspiring. And I guess makes it pretty forgettable too.

I think a very good part of the popularity Trinity Blood had was just the aesthetics, specially on clothing and architecture, I still have a few mangas and light novels on my bookcase, and the clothing design, specially if you are into goth/lolita/dandy fashion is simply one of the best I have seen ever, and lets remember this kind of alternative type of clothing got really popular around the mid 2000s, when this anime premiered. An ex-GF did a cosplay of Sister Esther on her queen attire and is, to this day, one of the most beautiful and impressive cosplays i can think about.
Oh, it definitely fits into a subgenre of Anime Catholicism, it's actually the image used to feature on the page. There's also Chrono Crusade, Qwaser of Stigmata and Hellsing. Even more if you look in manga, like Testarotho (4 volumes, cancelled sadly)

I think that for a lot of japanese creators it just looks like a cool mithology, samething as most people from christian backgrounds would look at greek or nordic religion

I watched this anime for the first time this year with my wife. We agreed that the concepts were cool but the execution was just awful. The "fight" scenes left a lot to be desired and the vagueness of the vampire origins were confusing instead of intriguing.

Yeah my wife is curious about the books. The pace of the anime was so slow at times that we had more entrainment out of watching it at 1.25 playback speed.
The vampires are all the descends of mars colonist that got infected with a space virus.

I personally liked Trinity Blood but for the look, setting and concepts rather than the characters. In other words it has more style than substance but I really digged the style.
I also read a few volumes of the light novel and I'd say that the story was somewhat better in that it had a kind of clever plot twist in the second volume.
The only thing that annoys me with Trinity Blood is that other than the Meh one from the anime, there won't be an actual ending due to the authors death

I remember enjoying Trinity Blood just enough that deapite how derivative the anime felt that when the LN's started getting an official translation I started buying them, and just temember how much more interesting and complex a story they felt verses the anime. Been a long time since I had my copies to go back and revisit them though thanks to multiple moves, but definitely remember that bybthe end of what was available for the LNs Incould see why someone would want to adapt them, that it was Gonzo at the height of their content farm days is the worst part. Definitely feels like an IP that could've bemefited by a more passionate and considered team to eleveatw it just that little bit.
The anime really missed the mark. It's such a shame that this is the way so many people were introduced to the series, because the characters as presented to the novels (and more faithful manga) are head and shoulders above all of this. The changes they made really wreck the overall flow and mood of the series.
I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the light novels, but they seem virtually impossible to find in my country - the best I could get was an offering on Amazon for what amounted to 500 USD and that was just volume 1!

It's basically a Japanese WH40k setting, at the time when WH40k wasn't known at all. Maybe if you are older and more well-read you would have spotted the plagiarisms and similarities, but when I watched both Trigun and Trinity Blood basically back to back they looked pretty different to me

I remember the comic shop I played Magic at as a preteen in the late 90s had a day where the Warhammer players would come in and do their thing. It was way too expensive and complicated for my broke ass though, so I only had a vague familiarity with it. Even magic was too pricey for me really tho. I had a friend with storage tubs full of cards so would help me build decks. Good tiiiiiimes.

Always saw Abel Nightroad as the missing link between Kenshin Himura, Vash the Stampede and Hellsings Alucard. He's goofy, lovable to children, loves the ladies, but has a darker side of his badassary. 😂
Visually he also looked a lot like the protagonists of Nightwalker and Eat Man, given that those are IPs from the mid to late 90s I would say they also might had been part of the inspiration / influence.

Y'know, what changed in the way the source material is translated to anime in the last few decades? Does this tell us something about how anime in general changed? Are there significant changes in perspective or narrative that each creative team put into their work? I haven't seen Stampede yet, but I'm curious what they did to make it it's own thing.

They didn't have Milly in the first season, but don't worry, she's coming, they just had a substitute to better develop Meryl, though I'm not sure if she was better developed in the manga, since this is kind of filling in gaps really, like the best kind of anime filler

I love the original, but from what I remember it's only a partial adaptation of the manga that deviates in some ways. Comparing two different director's takes of the source material could make for a fun video.
@@Moonhermit- Many times in the 90s and 2000s, they had enough for a season or 2 and sometimes moved so fast, they overtook the manga source material, Trigun one example of many, including the original FMA.
There are several he technically referenced that could serve in that respect: JJBA Stardust Crusaders' OVA versus the admittedly VERY extensive adaptation in the 2010s. Hellsing and Hellsing Ultimate is another good choice. Lots of remakes in the 2010s and early 2020s. Shaman King and Dragon Quest Dai's Adventure are 2 very good ones, in my experience
While nowadays they're at least pacing it much better. Like Dr. Stone they waited a while and it's been over for a few years, yet we'll probably be getting more content for several years

I loved the manga as a kid and hated the anime, well before I actually found Trigun or Hellsing, because the anime felt stale and plain compared to the lush artwork of the manga.
I think the manga will stay a little precious to me between nostalgia and the beautiful art, but I sure feel justified in not liking the anime. (And the lack of official translation for volumes 13-21 makes a little more sense now.)

Nostalgia and The Isekai LN Adaptation Apocalypse makes alot of mid anime seem better than they are. I enjoy anime like Trinity Blood, Blood+ and Witch Hunter Robin way more today than I did at release. Each of them can be dry, derivative and tedious in places but at least they feel like real projects and not just LN adaptations that were carbon copied, palette swapped and re-titled
There's commonality and then there's ripping off, which seems a bit too easy an accusation when we're naturally pattern seeking and especially when it comes to things we regard as better or more original. I didn't finish the original Trigun, though in hindsight, I cam understand how those who saw Trigun first and then Trinity Blood, would see those parallels. Ripped out of context and consideration, one can say they ripped it off while...really, it's similar visuals and patterns, that's kind of how storytelling works historically
Heck, even I was aware of the whole situation with Knives and Vash from the relevant Trigun 1996 episode, but that didn't make me think it was ripping it off anymore than the parallels one can draw to, say, Yu Yu Hakusho means Bleach was ripping it off.
All I remember about Trinity Blood is that it had a baller opening theme. Pretty big coincidence too as I yesterday started listening to it.

The Reason for Gonzo anime Original endings is due to running out of source material and authors not having full stories mapped out at the time of the Production
Cancer's a bitch. I had to deal with stage 3 cancer from age 15-20 and made friends in the chemo infusion room who lost their fight with cancer, as did both grandmothers and an aunt.
The only thing I remembered from watching this series long ago was that the Pope was a 16 year old mewling twink. Having grown up catholic this notion was absurdly amusing to me.

That was not the most absurd thing to me regarding the Church in this anime, I mean a similar thing actually happened in one of those dark eras, called the Saeculum obscurum, a Pope of 21 years who might or might not had been the bastard son of a previous Pope, it was that the two real figures of power in the Church were the older siblings of the teenage Pope and IIRC they both were cardinals even though one of them is a woman, the author either had no idea how some even very basic stuff of the catholic church works or if he was aware at least if should had added a brief in-universe reason to show why the Church in that universe / timeline is so different compared to the real one.
It's an otaku writer thing, having a kid in a position of leadership over adults. It's a common thing in amine / manga.

At the risk of being one of Those Fans, the anime misses the mark by miles. I'm also not sure its fair to call it as much of a ripoff as is implied here because while the core premise is the same, Trinity Blood runs off in its own direction.
I think ti's more accurate to call Trinity Blood a roleswap alternate universe than out and out plagarism - whcih the anime misses by miles. The premise can crudely be boiled down to - what if Vash died and came back as a complete mockery of himself and all he stood for, how would Knives be able to carry on that legacy?
Abel's persona is modeled after Cain's original personality. Abel was the brother who hated humanity and wanted it to die so they wouldn't suffer anymore. Whereas Cain was the brother who wanted to be useful so they could co-exist peacefully - something which ultimately got him killed.
When the siblings revived him using the Crusnik nanomachiens he went insane/became controlled by the nanomachines. They waged war on Earth - Abel, Cain and Seth sided with the vampires, while Lilith sided with the humans - and the siblings were in conflict for decades. Ultimately destroying chunks of civilization as it was and leaving it as it now is. Cain, being completely out of his mind and running off of fucked up computer logic, called for a meeting with Lilith and then killed her so her standing against them was no longer causing Abel pain... and he could steal her powers for himself. Which lead to Abel killing his brother a second time, and locking himself away with Lilith - ending the war and ceding the majority of the planet to humanity. Seth established the vampire civilization.
There's some ambiguity as to whether Cain is actually the one who wants to destroy the world or if the man who found him (Izaak von Kampfer) is. Abel can't decide if he should try to save him or put him out of his misery.
Abel still has conflicted feelings about humanity, but ultimately, he is doing what he's doing to carry on Lilith's wishes. He's putting on Cain's facade of being an all-loving, all kind saint of a person. Something the light novels & manga makes very clear because the silliness that Abel puts on really is just how Cain acts. Cain doesn't kill his subordinates, but he does scare the shit out of them by being completely unpredictable. Complete with the moments where it drops and you get a glimpse of the hatred lurking inside. The parts of his siblings he loved are subbed in to fill the holes in his own soul.
The anime misses all of this by having Cain be more like Knives in his fleeting appearance. It really sucks.

I remember enjoying TB back in school days for 2 reasons:
1) I loved vampires and warhammer 40k and it had a bit of both
2) The DVD release in Russia was gorgeous - top notch dub and even tarot cards included with each volume.

I didnt make the connection with trigun as a kid. Trinity blood was in a later time slot so I think the fog of tiredness gave it a lot of slack. A vampires vampire was a cool enough premise for me to enjoy. I do remember loving the ending theme though. I own the bluray and studio gonzo left an impression on me as I see I own a couple of series from their library lol
I really never made those connections until you brought it up lololol, total blindness on my part.
Now I really want a Trigun/Hellsing crossover. Alucard failed Interga she dies, the apocalypse happens, Alucard pouts in a coma for 10000 years or some such... which now sounds like Putting Alucard in the Vampire Hunter D universe lol

The English dub for this show is kind of interesting.
Its a reminder that Troy Baker got his start in anime, its the only Funimation dub to feature Hilary Haag, Aaron Dismuke worked on it while having to deal with his voice changing, and it might feature the only character Lydia McKay has ever played that can be taken 100% seriously.

The manga is much better than the anime. Anyway this video got recomended by yt and unfortunely I got the displeasure to watch it. Even berserk that is in this guy shirt was inspired by a ton of medias.

I really wish more animes got the ghost stories treatment like if an anime is bad or not going to be received well the dub should just have fun with it and make shit up that way it can turn something bad into something special
Check out the dub for Project ARMS. It's a Janky adaptation of surprisingly good manga that had a Canadian Cast where some of the adlibbed dialogue was done by Amanda Winn Lee (Yukiko Amagi and Rei Ayanami VA).
The manga is A LOT better and it explains better as well.
The anime is how it is because the writer died the anime is weird messed mix of the manga and novels
Cain just appears because the anime is rushed. (Esther isn't in the novels so it explains why there's random episodes without her unexplained why)
Just read the manga, The anime did the fandom DIRTY and has turned away so many people.
Trinity Blood clearly took 'inspiration' from Trigun, but Vash always reminded me of Ryo Saeba, so the 'inept hero who's secretly a master shot' seems more ike a trope than a direct steal... which doesn't make it better.

On the Anime in question: You know, if this were some kind of Anime Inspired version of Dungeons and Dragons (which I'm sure exists out there somewhere 😏), I would have no problem with a player wanting to play such a blatant rip off of Vash and Alucard, but its a game, and not 'Official' (and legally challengeable) as is this anime.
Awe poor Gonzo they made some of my ...(not this POS)... but other animes I enjoyed like Kiddy Grade, Burst Angel, Speed Grapher, Gasaraku The Count of Monte Cristo

Now we need to call out Trinity Blood for what it really is - a bad adaptation. And I do like the anime fine. I didn't notice the plagiarisms because, although I was aware of those anime existing, I never really watched them. But having read a few of the light novels - yeah, this anime is a very bad representative of its source material. This is what happens when you try to adapt a series of books with a LOT of intricate and interwoven plot points into what? 26 episodes? Yeesh.
Thinking about it not just in the name, but overall plot structure. Really most anime follow a structure like this. One-off episodes to entertain and introduce characters, then a serious mid-season and finale.
Trinity Blood as I remember it was billed as "the new Trigun". Its way too similar, even the Good vs Evil brother dynamic.A the time I liked that because Trigun was one of the early Adult Swim anime. Ive heard that Adult Swim's early anime were there because they were poorly received in Japan, so they were cheap to import and dub.
I liked the politics, being that its basically the Europe vs Eurasia, or really that the overall plot is...James Bond during the Cold War. The vampires being nobles that took responsibility and not just being bad guys was an interesting idea. If anything it became annoying whenever Evil Vampire would show up. Similarly the point that the vampires are created by non-supernatural means is also interesting.

Commonality and plagiarizing are very different so I very much disagree with you on that its plagiarizing these anime when mostly its just tropes. Like Knives and Vash are literally a play on Cain and Able in the biblical story not to mention the themes of Love and Strife. With your logic Trigun is ""ripping off"" the bible.

Look, Gonzo certainly had its issues. But they made Speed Grapher, so I can forgive a lot.
Never seen it and before watching the video I said " Trigun, Hellsing and maybe Gungrave" lol sure enough
I watched this back when it was coming out, and I finally got my torrents set up and was dead-smack in my CONSOOM EVERYTHING phase of weebdom. I don't care to revisit it at all, but I remember vaguely enjoying it, at least the first half. Trigun was also my #1 favorite anime at the time, so I guess I couldn't get too angry at getting what's basically a second serving.
In all fairness, I do have a couple of good things to say about it. Right off the bat, it's got a dope opening that was my first exposure to BUCK-TICK, it's got some surprising bangers on the soundtrack (check out No.18_tactics and No.23_search mode), and the sci-fi hyper-Gothic aesthetic (especially for the airships) reminded me of proto-WH40k before I even really knew what that was. Other than the cool terminator guy, the only real standout story moment that stuck with me after all these years is the (6th?) episode called The Sword Dancer, which took place in I think Budapest. I might be misremembering a few details, but what you get out of it is a great little glimpse of what life is actually like as a human under vampire occupation. In restrospect, the vibe it's going for is very similar to the 'Cold War-era Prague' chapter of MGS4, where it's a gorgeous Old European city that goes completely dead after nightfall, except instead of staying away from the watchful eyes of Stasi spooks, it's because the designated 'prey' in a city ruled by vampires would rather stay in the relative safety of indoors. There's a palpable sense of danger around every corner, and got help you if the circumstances force you to traverse the city at night, because there's a very real chance that a passing carriage of some vampire noble would snatch you right off the streets, just because he saw a lone human and decided it could be fun to throw you into a manticore's cage to keep his guests entertained tonight. That episode IS Trinity Blood to me. It takes any cool or original thoughts from the show and almost succeeds into distilling it into something uniquely TB. Then it passes as quickly as it came, and you never get anything this cool ever again. :/

I think Basilisk was dropping around that time, too. Mid-2000s were a bit of an awkward transitional era in anime, but I have a real fondness for it.

@@ToHoldNothing The sequel is hot garbage, but the original Basilisk was top 10 material for me when I first watched it. I always describe it as one of the rare 'perfect animes,' not in the sense that it has no flaws, but in the sense that it knows exactly what it wants to be and executes that vision all the way through to the end, unwaveringly. Once you watch the first episode and realize that it's just Romeo & Juliet X Ninja Scroll, you can probably predict exactly where it's going to go and even how it's gonna go about it, but it's done so well and the characters are so engaging that it doesn't matter. It'd feel more insulting if it tried to divert its course for the sake of some cheap twist. I know Bennett likes to meme on Gonzo, and they do make themselves a real easy target, but they've also put out some legit masterpieces in that era, and this is one of them. If memory serves, it's also one of the few Gonzo productions where they actually paced themselves properly and didn't run out of animation budget with 5 episodes left to go like they usually do lmao.

Not sure if there was a character with a Grim Reaper title in Basilisk, but I haven't watched Hellsing either and I know Walter is known as a Grim Reaper of sorts
