Thank you!!! It makes so much sense. I’m on my 3rd month and trying to speak anything is like trying to drive a car and the wheels immediately fall off.

My biggest issue is that I can’t understand people when they speak. I can read and speak some Spanish but I am trying to translate what people are saying in my head and by the time I understand their first sentence they are on their tenth sentence and I get lost. People say “you just need to think in Spanish rather than trying to translate in your head” as if that is something I can just decide to do

Its like an learning to press Y on an xbox controller. In steps. 1. Look at Y, move thumb press Y.
      2. Visualize the controller and move hand
      3. Eventually you see Y on the screen then you just think "press y" then thumb executes.
      4. Finally, you see Y on screen and thumb just presses Y with zero active thought.

This is where you need to listen to as much Spanish as possible from different sources to get your ear used to the language, as Rocky explained. When you watch movies, shows, news, etc. in Spanish, put on the subtitles and follow along. Then keep repeating that over and over until you understand what they’re saying. Afterward, remove the subtitles and try to follow along. Or, try reducing the speed 25%-50% and then listen along so that you understand. Then, increase the speed back to normal and follow along until you can understand everything they’re saying.
As Rocky explained, listen to music, podcasts and even audiobooks with the subtitles on. Reduce the speed as needed in the beginning, then go back to regular speed until you grasp everything.
Make sure to listen to Spanish from different countries so you get used to the different forms of pronunciations and speech styles.
Little by little, your ears will get better used to hearing Spanish and you will understand more and more. Practice every single day and dedicate time to it.

All you have to do is listen to fast spoken Spanish videos over and over and tell you can follow it. Just takes a lot of immersion but it is doable

I think I mildly fall into this after 4 years of spanish in school from English speaking teachers. My words are slow sometimes when I put together sentences, trying to think of the words.

Think of babies or toddlers, they don’t start speaking S…..their native language straight away 😂😂

I focus on reading and listening. To practice speaking, I read out loud. I read in my head to improve vocabulary and sentence structure. Many times we hear familiar words and guess what is being said When your vocabulary increases, you realize that sometimes those familiar words are part of a phrase or idiom and it changes the meaning of what you guessed the thing being said actually was.
Rocky is so correct about getting the language in your head. You have to get tens of thousands of words and phrases in your head to speak and understand things.
