      It seems like the difference between por and para is the difference between a point and a line. Destinations, recipients, deadlines are points in time and space. Durations, motivations, modes of travel and explanations are "lines" in that they have a beginning, middle and end.

    As a French speaker, this is confusing for me to remember. You know why? I've discovered that our French "par" is the Spanish version of "por", but our French version of "pour" seems to be the equivalent of the Spanish "para". Obviously in French I never have to second-guess myself between "par" and "pour" , but when speaking Spanish, I often second-guess myself, then think in French, then switch back to Spanish, madre mia!

  • @DiegoGrit
    @DiegoGrit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I’ve been doing some thinking recently and I pieced together in my head that for anytime para doesn’t directly translate to “for” it’s more like a “in order to”. Por ejemplo cuando tú dices “estoy entrenando para bajar el peso” it’s literally just “I’m training in order to lose weight”. Just a theory I thought of. The main thing really tho is that it doesn’t mean one thing and it was never supposed to lol it’s main function is being a connector I’ve realized recently. Pero thank you so much for your videos I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago and I’ve been implementing your methods since (im latino born in the states and never learned Spanish lol). So I just spent a week in DR, it was my second time, and I was way more comfortable and had more confidence to speak and make errors than my first visit. Appreciate what you do!

      They both roughly translate to "sorry"/"forgive me"/"excuse me" (depending on context).
      Perdón is just a phrase. If anything it's a noun (el perdón). The phrase I think is just a shortening of "pedir perdón" (to ask for forgiveness/to apologize)
      (Pido) perdón, señor.
      Disculpe comes from "disculpar".
      Disculpe is in the "usted command" and more formal. It roughly means sorry/forgive me/excuse me. Disculpa would be the "tú command".
      Discúlpeme (or just disculpe is fine) usted señor.
      Discúlpame tú chico.

    I was very excited when you said that with practice, you’ll know if something’s not correct, because it sounds wrong. That happened to me in a Spanish class that a coworker and I took. We were working in groups and were supposed to insert the correct article before the nouns listed on a worksheet. One of the words was “llaves.” No one in our group knew whether it was masculine or feminine, but to me, las llaves sounded correct. Los llaves sounded weird. Maybe my years of taking classes but never taking on the identity of a native speaker and therefore not becoming fluent is turning around! I think it will go much faster now! You speak to my heart with your mindset training!! Thank you!

    Wow! I really wish that I would have found your channel years ago. This is really helpful!
    Today is Christmas Eve 2021 and I am flying back home to California from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 (¡Amo Puerto Rico! 😁), and just from THIS lesson, I think it would have made me much more comfortable with my Spanish. Although California has many Spanish speakers, 99% of the time, I communicate with them in English. In fact, I speak Spanish more in Puerto Rico than I do in California, and that's still very little. (If someone asks, "¿Hablas español?" I sometimes may reply, "Sí, hablo español, pero no perfectamente (or "con fluidez"). Todavía lo estoy aprendiendo.") Only recently has my colleague from Venezuela decided to text me in Spanish for me to improve upon and get comfortable with conversational Spanish.
    This was my first video of yours that I watched and you already have a new subscriber, bro! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you for this lesson -- it's like the "15 minute pep talk of a lifetime," lol! To know the difference between Por and Para. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
    Take care,
