Interesting with the velocities but for some reason the shorter barrels seem to perform as good or better as the magnum load seems to dump all its energy into 13 to 16 inch barrels. At 12 feet there would be a bit of loss but generally the longer barrel is no advantage. I shoot a semi-auto Volquartsen with a 13.5 inch barrel and is still putting up better velocities than what you have here. Anyway, good shooting. R
I bought a box of this to take hunting i was planning on using it in my Heritage Arms 22. After watching some reviews it seems as if it under performs out of pistols. It seems as if it doesn't live up to the expectations on the box out of a rifle either. Maybe ill just stick to my Winchester semi jacket hollow points. That is a really nice rifle you have there by the way.
Thanks, I was fortunate to be able to get the Baikal new in the box. As for ammo choices for the .22 WMR so far the best all round load for me has been the CCI 40 grain hollow point, good velocity and good accuracy.
I've had a couple Savage model 24 combos, one in 22lr / .410 and one in .22lr / 20 Gauge. I liked the 22/410, did not care for the .22/20 Savage as it was very heavy for what it was.
Great video as always!! Seen those at the local shop last time I was there. Instead I picked up the Hornady 22 mag critical defense ammo to try. Same as these but has the softer red plug in the top. Designed for the mini revolvers and derringers. Supposed to give 1000fps in a 1” barrel. Never tried them over the chrono but they do pretty good on water jugs from a Davis derringer and a marlin rifle. Might be something for you to check out!
I've never seen the "critical defense" 22 WMR load for sale around here. The 45 grain bullet looks interesting. How much price difference between those and the 30 grain V-Max load?
314299 Shooting Channel the critical defense load was $17 US I think the other stuff was pretty close. Both under $20. And I was wrong about velocity. It’s listed as 1000 FPS from a 1 7/8” barrel. 24” barrel is 1700fps. They are a 45 gr FTX Bullet. Hornady item #83200 if that helps. I’ll try and do a video on it with water jugs and see if my chrono will work.
I have a single trigger model in 22/410, replaced the notch rear sight with a williams ghost ring, never got it sighted in yet though. Your combo there looks much nicer finished then mine.
I can remember when Hornady started offering loaded rounds for sale and back then, they were highly consistent. Of course, at the time, they "custom loaded" rounds, but ever since they decided to take on the other major ammo makers, and especially since the advent of their "Leverevolution" ammo, the quality seems to have slipped, ever so slightly....I gotta wonder if they're just not a tad bit overwhelmed. It is very popular ammo, after all.
Years ago Hornady had some issues with some of their 17 HMR rim fire ammo, so I guess like any maker when you pump out a lot of product you can run into some quality control issues.
How long did you wait between groups? Combination guns can often have a vertical dispersion if the barrel gets hot, but I see none of that here. A very useful caliber combination!
I'm not sure of the exact time between groups, but I was shooting another rifle the same day, switching back and forth between the two and checking targets in between. I would guess 15 minutes between groups. I've never had the 22 magnum barrel hot, at best it gets slightly warm.
Good video. Have watched you several years back on some Swiss straight pull rifles. Forgot to sub and lost you. Anyway found again and subbed this time. Ok never have shot any of this ammo before. Only 22 mag I have are revolvers but a buddy has rifles in 22 mag. Will show him. Have you done a vid on the rifle? It's neat👍
I don't have any handguns in this caliber, it would be interesting to see how this stuff shoots in a short barrel. I did an "unboxing" video on the rifle but have not done a specific video on the gun, I should do one someday.
@@314299 I also just want to say thanks for your videos. I have had a video of yours saved for a few years on taking apart the Schmidt Ruben straight pull bolt. Your work on these are great. Explained very well. 👍

Do you have any factual evidence to support your claim that a barrel longer than 16 inches "slow the round down"? Lets look at factory available barrel lengths on popular rifles: -Ruger American Rimfire 18" -Savage A22 Magnum 22" -Browning T-Bolt Sporter 22" -Henry Frontier Model 24" Do you suppose the engineers at Ruger, Savage, Browning and Henry are all incompetent and slap extra barrel length on their rifles that will only decrease the performance of the rifles they sell?
Check out www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/22mag.html for results showing barrel length vs velocity results for various ammo loadings in the 22 magnum. Longer barrel = more velocity.
Actually if you just linearly interpolate between the Muz Velocity (2200 fps) and the Velocity at 100 yds (1421fps) the anticipated loss at 25 yards is ~195 fps. This is almost exactly what you got ( a loss of ~200 fps).
@@314299 I misunderstood you, sorry. BTW I have a similar gun made by Savage, a 24DL (22Mag upper, 20GA Mag Lower, 24 inch barrels, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savage_Model_24 ), single trigger with a hammer selector. When I shoot the 30gr Hornady, at 50 yds it shoots 1" higher than my 40gr ammo.
Yep! Truth be told a higher magnification scope would have helped a bit when using the corner aiming points. I took the scope off today and plan to shoot it a bit with the iron sights to see how well I can do with those.
The Baikal combo gun used in the video has a 24" long barrel, the same length of barrel that Hornady gives on their web page where they list the muzzle velocity as 2200 fps. www.hornady.com/ammunition/rimfire/22-wmr-30-gr-v-max#!/ Generally longer barrels will give more, not less velocity, up to a point where extra length gives no extra speed. A 24" barrel is certainly not too long for 22 magnum, but it's certainly at the point where any longer would start to get pointless. I think the results I got were down to two factors: 1) I think this may have been an under performing lot, velocity wise and 2) My numbers are instrument velocities and not muzzle velocity, with the crono set up at 12 feet the number will be a bit lower than muzzle, but certainly not as much as what I got vs the factory specification.
Hornady is bald faced lying about the velocity of this round. It would be refreashing for them to tell the truth. Maybe they lied because the standard 40 grain cartridge has a velocity very close to 1900 FPS? Time for a head to head comparison.
Yeah it's not a whole lot faster than some 40 grain loads. Hopefully this is just an under performing lot, it would be interesting to hear from others who have shot this ammo to see what sort of speed they got. Regrettably not many rim fire shooters shoot over a crony,
This ammo might shoot better in another rifle, or it might shoot worse. If you have a 22 magnum you should test it in your rifle and put up a video showing the results.

I'm sure that is true as long as the target is appropriate for the round.
WMR rifles are designed for 40 grain bullets. That being said, you're batting 1000.
So far I have had the best overall accuracy with 40 grain loads, but it's always worth trying the other offerings.
