I have an ancestor who escaped the Cherokee Trail of Tears. That is why I am alive today. The location and the incredible work that everyone had done to make this film is deeply appreciated. I’m still in love with Uncas. I just found him so romantic. He was sweet to kids and respectful to women, protective and kind, and he was quiet but his eyes were so expressive. Ugh. Just ugh.

Clannad is the group, Enya the famous Irish singers family. They learned Cherokee for one of the songs although they usually sing in Gaelic. The band actually insisted the song be in a Native language.

Yet, many a good/great actor/director has been "dissed" by Oscar results. Here, the Director was snubbed after assembling & enabling one hell of a supporting staff & (somewhat minor/unknown) cast members to perform at their best, and should have received an Oscar for his yeoman efforts/work.....IMO.

absolutely... the opening scene kept us second guessing... first that Hawkeye was being chased by an Indian, then after realizing they were together the film introduced a third runner - so who was he chasing? and so on, until the deer entered the scene and finally it became clear what was going on.
The fact that Wes Studi and Russel Means were in the movie speaks volumes. Neither one would have done a project that wasn’t true to form. A masterpiece 💎
This movie made such an impression on my daughter at the age of 10 when we watched it together she finally understood it was OK to be a blonde haired, blue-eyed child of a Huron mother who had dark hair and dark brown eyes. Her pride was strong , her back straight and her love of all her relations no longer doubted. She was complete.
I watched this in the theater originally. By myself. And cried during the introduction. The music was so powerful. And the scenery so beautiful...I broke into tears.
I saw it while living in South Africa. From the moment it started I recognized the mountain forests of my home state, NC, and was thrilled to my core! Soon as i was back in the states I bought the DVD. Now I understand why it was so magical: because Michael Mann made it.
Unlike the book, the movie presented Magua, not as so much as a villain, but an adversary. He was my favorite character. I've been an outdoorsman involved in historical reenacting for 40 years and this movie captured the period like no other I have ever seen, but this was not history and should not be viewed as such. This was theater in a historical context with absolutely stunning scenery as a backdrop. It was a magnificent artistic creation.
This movie is ageless ...it still holds together with the precision and loving care it was made with...it touches our hearts and souls because of that dedication...hands down my favorite movie of all time. The chemistry of the actors, the photography, the music and the breadth of the heart breaking scenes ...I feel like I'm right there with them.
A true masterpiece. The first time I watched it resulted in just silence in the theater. Then clapping and whistling. This is an American story through and through. Those of us with family here during those times felt it deeply.

Is absolutely adore this movie. Went to see it 3 times in the cinema, have the soundtrack and dvd. The ending sequence of 12 minutes is some of the best cinema ever. Emotional, respectful heartbreaking, chest pumping and powerful. This was one of the best films of the 90’s it’s criminal it didn’t win a hatful of awards.

I also have to say about that score: As long as I have been hiking and treking various wilderness locations, each time I come to a breathtaking vast open view there is exactly one bit of music that fires off in my head as my internal soundtrack. It's that moment the entire orchestra builds into the theme. Over 20 years it almost never fails.
This film makes all the super hero/transformer flicks look like trivia. Why can't Hollywood understand this? We aren't all 13 year olds that watch movies.
Don't blame Hollywood. They're going to make movies that make the most money. It's a business. Blame moviegoers for flocking to those garbage cgi marvel crapfests.
I really wish the majority of Alice's scenes didn't end up on the cutting room floor. she was always my favourite character. And Jodhi May did and excellent job.
The entire character of Alice is a type and foreshadow of my love life... And Uncas, desire, devotion, unspoken, yet deeper than any could imagine. So tragic. Pure loss and pure regret. Not to mention bad timing and fated to doom and misery and death. Sad? Yeah. I know, I've lived it. But the romance and poetry of the way her character was depicted... and the loss and relationship and so many things so much greater than her controlled her and her destiny. Uncas and Alice were fated to never love. That is the true tragedy. That is how I feel such connection and relatability to their plight.
I've watched this film many times. It never gets old and the attention to detail and historical accuracy will continue to help this movie stand the test of time. Extremely great work by all involved.
I know men dont usually say this, but this is a beautiful movie with a bit of everything that makes a movie great. By far one of my favorite. Was hooked the first time I saw it when I was 17 and have seen it probably 100 times. It never gets old!
Brilliant cast, the very best! Day Lewis, Studi, Means, Schweig, Stowe, May, Roeves & Waddington. Exquisite music, one of my top 10. And yet, amidst the main story of war, the British & French, the Native Americans and Hawkeye and Cora. There is also the story of the love of father and son, Chingachgook and Uncas and Hawkeye too. But on a deeper level, there is the lightning quick and yet profound love story between Uncas and Alice. When the heroic brave Uncas dies trying to save Alice, it is so distressing. But when the brave Alice steps off the cliff, backwards, sacrificing her life too; for Uncas, the man who she loved...is absolutely heartbreaking. They did not have the luxury of speaking, nor being together like Hawkeye and Cora. But through their amazing acting you felt their love was just as palpable. It's in my top ten of movies, up in the top 3 actually. 5 stars, 💔💔💔💔💔
Jesus Christ I love this film... it is my favorite film of all times... The actors are incrediable, the soundtrack perfect the director view of the entire context is simply marvelous , we may say this film is old but still it can touch the hearts of many around the world, specially us, americans; despite of being from South America, I can feel the conflit of the natives and the europeans and from that conflit a new thing came about , and it was the america colonised and it gave birth to a new identity, no longer native and neither european. Throughtout history of mankind it has happened so many times, the celts gave away to the romans, the romans to the germanic and etc.. this film is a vivid representation of this period of transmutation and it also shows how ephemeral life can be but at the same time it is so meaninful and adventurous...
Michael Mann is my all time favourite film director. He brings a level of depth, realism, and attention to detail that no other director can match. A true auteur. Heat, Thief, Man Hunter, Collateral, The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali. All incredible works of art.

One of the best movies ever made if not the best. It has it all, authenticity, faithfulness to history, great music, high acting level, battle scenes, as for the stunning Nature, it's God made, No comment! water symbolism is very powerful throughout the movie. I fell in love with the masterpiece as well as the landscape. Bravo Michale Mann and crew.
They talked about Hawk Eye and Cora's relationship. But i like Alice's and the other guy's one. They didn't even talk to each other but they ended up loving each other. That was awesome. I hated so much how he got killed trying to save her. Fucking sucks ass. I wanted him to save her so bad. All of the actors in this movie played their characters so well.
You have to remember the zeitgeist of the time that the novel was written and the whites had to be seen as the heroes to giver authority for them to take the lands away from the idigenous peoples.
I was 14 when this movie came out. I was absolutely captivated by everything about this movie. One of the best scores of all time. Wes Studi should have had a best supporting nod. Epic film.
This is one of those films thats TOO good for me to watch multiple times, its almost too painful like you are watching a tragedy in real life and want to get involved. The cinematography and natural surroundings adds into that, I think the only other movie that really did that for me was Aguirre: Wrath of God, another movie I can hardly watch because its THAT good.
It's one of my favorite films of all time. Pre revolutionary America is my favorite period of history. It was brought to glorious life in this masterpiece.
What I like most about this great film is that it will last forever to be discovered again and again. Perfect cast, the right director, the music and everything else in this film. Really appreciate this series telling us about how much effort went into the details of the film.
Truly, a major contributing factor in the magnificence of this film is the sound track. The love theme is hauntingly beautiful. and the arrangement by Trevor Jones of "The Gael" is more felt than heard however I never see any credit give to Dougie Mac Lean for creating it.
Keep in mind, when you look at this, you are looking at Michael Mann. This masterpiece is his vision, and he elicited magnificent performances out of all of these people, and it all comes together to make a work of art of this power and beauty. A lesser filmmaker produces a lesser film.
Fantastic documentary on what is bar none, my favorite movie ever. If there was never a perfect film, this is close. The storyline, casting, the production values, cinematography, the music, the scenery. I have the DVD dirctor's cut as well as the VHS theatre version. I really cannot say how many times I have watched them.
The film is art. Art lasts forever. It was an astutely cast ensemble, well trained, and a set of finely trained, multiple-tasking extras. Dialogue was superb. Special effects were seemingly authentic and colorfully appealing. as with weaponry, costumes were more authentic than any I've ever seen in a film, myself being a life-long movie buff, now at age 80. I, being a nit picker re: film continuity, saw only 4 small flubs in the film, along with one too stagey scene. The theme music was hauntingly 18th century: a work so yearning in its story and telling a different story to each listener. The use of natural lighting was astonishing to the eye. You're not supposed to compare works of art to other works of art, but this film is as artistic as China Town. A thank you to every single person who participated in producing this piece of art.
Most of it was filmed in the mountains of western North Carolina. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful part of the USA. The Blue Ridge Mts and surrounding countryside are awe inspiring. I've lived here since 2019 and can never get enough of it.
It amazes me the work, training, costumes, buildings etc. It's overwhelming! Wonder if that fort still exists for tourists. If you were to count the hours, the crew, and support people are probably never paid enough but the experience is memorable. I would have loved to be an extra but I noticed there weren't any "well fed people" around back then. Constantly running, fighting, eating a meat and low carb diet!
I've always thought that Jodhi May has a love hate relationship with this film. Yes, she did an excellent job but as she was only 16 when it was shot, her mother was on set to make sure that there were no love scenes. Most of Alice's love story with Uncas that was intended to be shown wound up being cut. It's always made me wonder how different it could have been if she'd been just a bit older.
I agree. They didn't recorded the love scene in the waterfall because her mother disagree about it.. but Eric Schweig (Uncas) told they recorded some "puppy love scenes " but .. Michael Mann cut of. I think the movie director did a big mistake. Uncas & Alice had a good chemestry and deserved more scenes/dialogues
Then again, maybe because they didn't show everything made their relationship really sizzle on screen. So much unspoken and unfulfilled - it was tension to the max, culminating at the promontory.
I love Michael Mann, he is one of the best and my favourite directors, writers and producers and what he did with The Last Of The Mohicans was phenomenal, the cast was perfect, the writing, so was the locations, scenery, the camera work, the costuming, the action and the music, I love the movie and it is the best.
This movie and the soundtrack resonates heavily with me. My Irish/British/German ancestors settled this country and were some of the poor people pushing westward. The movie gives me the visual and historical context and being one who is easily moved by music, the soundtrack is hypnotic, antique, and connects me back to my pioneer family.
One of my favorite movies. We make out hunting trips with camping and living with entire family for 3 weeks in the fall in Appalachia. This is our sound track.
If you ever went to Lake George and Fort William Henry, the history there is palpable! I brought my children there, and taught them the history and over the years, they have viewed this Film- it’s just stunning!

I have watched this movie several times, and always find something monumental. The making of this movie is to perfection, they do not make movies or put the care into like Michael Mann. Loved the making of it.
I love this movie, but I had no idea that it was Michael Mann's vision and grasp of the material, that made it so great. I think every woman in America was in love with Daniel Day Lewis, after watching this movie. We were at the Biltmore Estate the day they were filming the forest ambush scene. There's a road that parallels that field and traffic was stopped. But we could see the smoke from the weapons' fire and catch glimpses of people in red coats. We asked what was being filmed, and were told it was The Last Of The Mohicans, so we couldn't wait to actually see it.
To say I’ve seen this about two dozen times, is a vast understatement. I seen this movie , studied this movie closer to seventy - eighty,, ninety times might be closer. I use 54mm figures the act this story out for myself. This is one of the greatest movie ever made. I’ll watch it again I’m sure. Why not?

I live in western NC. I've been to many of the places where this was filmed. The final chase scene along the ridgeline was filmed at Chimney Rock Park. The beauty of these mountains is wonderfully captured in this film. The scene of the British arrival over the bridge,and mirrored in the lake below it, was filmed at the Biltmore Estate, as was the scene where Hayward proposes to Cora.
This is one of those movies that will stand the test of time,the effort and hard work in making this movie are appreciated ,and will be appreciated for many years to come.Excellent film

I really wish the majority of Alice's scenes didn't end up on the cutting room floor. she was always my favourite character. And Jodhi May did and excellent job.

The entire character of Alice is a type and foreshadow of my love life... And Uncas, desire, devotion, unspoken, yet deeper than any could imagine. So tragic. Pure loss and pure regret. Not to mention bad timing and fated to doom and misery and death. Sad? Yeah. I know, I've lived it. But the romance and poetry of the way her character was depicted... and the loss and relationship and so many things so much greater than her controlled her and her destiny. Uncas and Alice were fated to never love. That is the true tragedy. That is how I feel such connection and relatability to their plight.

I know men dont usually say this, but this is a beautiful movie with a bit of everything that makes a movie great. By far one of my favorite. Was hooked the first time I saw it when I was 17 and have seen it probably 100 times. It never gets old!
Brilliant cast, the very best! Day Lewis, Studi, Means, Schweig, Stowe, May, Roeves & Waddington. Exquisite music, one of my top 10.
And yet, amidst the main story of war, the British & French, the Native Americans and Hawkeye and Cora. There is also the story of the love of father and son, Chingachgook and Uncas and Hawkeye too. But on a deeper level, there is the lightning quick and yet profound love story between Uncas and Alice. When the heroic brave Uncas dies trying to save Alice, it is so distressing. But when the brave Alice steps off the cliff, backwards, sacrificing her life too; for Uncas, the man who she loved...is absolutely heartbreaking. They did not have the luxury of speaking, nor being together like Hawkeye and Cora. But through their amazing acting you felt their love was just as palpable. It's in my top ten of movies, up in the top 3 actually. 5 stars,

Jesus Christ I love this film... it is my favorite film of all times... The actors are incrediable, the soundtrack perfect the director view of the entire context is simply marvelous , we may say this film is old but still it can touch the hearts of many around the world, specially us, americans; despite of being from South America, I can feel the conflit of the natives and the europeans and from that conflit a new thing came about , and it was the america colonised and it gave birth to a new identity, no longer native and neither european. Throughtout history of mankind it has happened so many times, the celts gave away to the romans, the romans to the germanic and etc.. this film is a vivid representation of this period of transmutation and it also shows how ephemeral life can be but at the same time it is so meaninful and adventurous...

Wish Michael Mann would put out a director's cut/extended cut versions. I loved the theatrical version, and I would like to see more of the cut scenes.

It has it all, authenticity, faithfulness to history, great music, high acting level, battle scenes, as for the stunning Nature, it's God made, No comment! water symbolism is very powerful throughout the movie. I fell in love with the masterpiece as well as the landscape. Bravo Michale Mann and crew.
They talked about Hawk Eye and Cora's relationship. But i like Alice's and the other guy's one.
They didn't even talk to each other but they ended up loving each other. That was awesome.

That’s what made it more real my friend the point was he gave everything for her even though he came up short and failed at the cost of his life.
You have to remember the zeitgeist of the time that the novel was written and the whites had to be seen as the heroes to giver authority for them to take the lands away from the idigenous peoples.

This is one of those films thats TOO good for me to watch multiple times, its almost too painful like you are watching a tragedy in real life and want to get involved. The cinematography and natural surroundings adds into that, I think the only other movie that really did that for me was Aguirre: Wrath of God, another movie I can hardly watch because its THAT good.

It's one of my favorite films of all time. Pre revolutionary America is my favorite period of history. It was brought to glorious life in this masterpiece.

Truly, a major contributing factor in the magnificence of this film is the sound track. The love theme is hauntingly beautiful. and the arrangement by Trevor Jones of "The Gael" is more felt than heard however I never see any credit give to Dougie Mac Lean for creating it.
This movie is perfection, the story telling, acting, soundtracks, photography. A masterpiece! 10/10

Keep in mind, when you look at this, you are looking at Michael Mann. This masterpiece is his vision, and he elicited magnificent performances out of all of these people, and it all comes together to make a work of art of this power and beauty. A lesser filmmaker produces a lesser film.
Fantastic documentary on what is bar none, my favorite movie ever. If there was never a perfect film, this is close. The storyline, casting, the production values, cinematography, the music, the scenery. I have the DVD dirctor's cut as well as the VHS theatre version. I really cannot say how many times I have watched them.
Best movie ever.
The film is art. Art lasts forever. It was an astutely cast ensemble, well trained, and a set of finely trained, multiple-tasking extras. Dialogue was superb. Special effects were seemingly authentic and colorfully appealing. as with weaponry, costumes were more authentic than any I've ever seen in a film, myself being a life-long movie buff, now at age 80. I, being a nit picker re: film continuity, saw only 4 small flubs in the film, along with one too stagey scene. The theme music was hauntingly 18th century: a work so yearning in its story and telling a different story to each listener. The use of natural lighting was astonishing to the eye. You're not supposed to compare works of art to other works of art, but this film is as artistic as China Town. A thank you to every single person who participated in producing this piece of art.
Im so fascinated with the scope of work and skill that goes into movie making, especially war type of movies! And this movie is one of my favorites.!

Most of it was filmed in the mountains of western North Carolina. I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful part of the USA. The Blue Ridge Mts and surrounding countryside are awe inspiring. I've lived here since 2019 and can never get enough of it.

This just might be my favorite movie of all time. I watch this movie over and over and never get tired of it.
It amazes me the work, training, costumes, buildings etc. It's overwhelming! Wonder if that fort still exists for tourists. If you were to count the hours, the crew, and support people are probably never paid enough but the experience is memorable. I would have loved to be an extra but I noticed there weren't any "well fed people" around back then. Constantly running, fighting, eating a meat and low carb diet!
I've always thought that Jodhi May has a love hate relationship with this film. Yes, she did an excellent job but as she was only 16 when it was shot, her mother was on set to make sure that there were no love scenes. Most of Alice's love story with Uncas that was intended to be shown wound up being cut. It's always made me wonder how different it could have been if she'd been just a bit older.
I agree. They didn't recorded the love scene in the waterfall because her mother disagree about it.. but Eric Schweig (Uncas) told they recorded some "puppy love scenes " but .. Michael Mann cut of. I think the movie director did a big mistake. Uncas & Alice had a good chemestry and deserved more scenes/dialogues
Then again, maybe because they didn't show everything made their relationship really sizzle on screen. So much unspoken and unfulfilled - it was tension to the max, culminating at the promontory.

I love Michael Mann, he is one of the best and my favourite directors, writers and producers and what he did with The Last Of The Mohicans was phenomenal, the cast was perfect, the writing, so was the locations, scenery, the camera work, the costuming, the action and the music, I love the movie and it is the best.

This movie and the soundtrack resonates heavily with me. My Irish/British/German ancestors settled this country and were some of the poor people pushing westward. The movie gives me the visual and historical context and being one who is easily moved by music, the soundtrack is hypnotic, antique, and connects me back to my pioneer family.
One of my favorite movies. We make out hunting trips with camping and living with entire family for 3 weeks in the fall in Appalachia. This is our sound track.

If you ever went to Lake George and Fort William Henry, the history there is palpable! I brought my children there, and taught them the history and over the years, they have viewed this Film- it’s just stunning!

I love this movie, but I had no idea that it was Michael Mann's vision and grasp of the material, that made it so great. I think every woman in America was in love with Daniel Day Lewis, after watching this movie. We were at the Biltmore Estate the day they were filming the forest ambush scene. There's a road that parallels that field and traffic was stopped. But we could see the smoke from the weapons' fire and catch glimpses of people in red coats. We asked what was being filmed, and were told it was The Last Of The Mohicans, so we couldn't wait to actually see it.
This is still the best version ever made. And still very moving.
To say I’ve seen this about two dozen times, is a vast understatement. I seen this movie , studied this movie closer to seventy - eighty,, ninety times might be closer. I use 54mm figures the act this story out for myself. This is one of the greatest movie ever made. I’ll watch it again I’m sure. Why not?

I live in western NC. I've been to many of the places where this was filmed. The final chase scene along the ridgeline was filmed at Chimney Rock Park. The beauty of these mountains is wonderfully captured in this film. The scene of the British arrival over the bridge,and mirrored in the lake below it, was filmed at the Biltmore Estate, as was the scene where Hayward proposes to Cora.
The shock on the invincible Mague's face, when he realized he was no match for the old man, made the movie.
This is one of those movies that will stand the test of time,the effort and hard work in making this movie are appreciated ,and will be appreciated for many years to come.Excellent film
