@@markdaiute5122 The actual settings and conflict in the book are taken from real history. The Lake George NY Southern Adirondack region. This was where a majority of the French & Indian war 1750 to 1758 took place. Fort William Henry existed and now an exact replica of it stands on the burned foundations of the old fort. The Military road where the massacre scene takes place - another actual event- still wanders thru the forest south of Lake George . The waterfall scene where they went behind it, Coopers Cave in Glens Falls. The final scene could be any one of a number of waterfalls in the Adirondacks.

A year later I used the film as an adjunct to a friend who was involved and had been involved for some time in Rev Recreative groups. My friend came to class and interrupted the movie/class in order to try recruiting the entire class for George III's army while wearing a rev war period uniform and carrying an original museum-quality Brown Bess that he owned. I love watching interviews with Daniel Day Lewis becuase of how much he is different from the characters he portrays. SOme actors, even some of the greatest, lend part of their personalities to the characters they play. And with DDL it seems like every time he has absolutely nothing in common with his characters and yet he portrays them so brilliantly!
This is one of my all time favorite movies. It feels so authentic, and puts you right there in the middle of that conflict to help you understand what it was like to live in those times. The struggle to survive with a vision on building a future. Along with that struggle comes destruction of the old to give way to the new. The loss of life is tragic, but undoubtedly reflects the accuracy of those times.
This movie was so good because the characters were so believable. No special effects with werewolves or spaceships, just a really good story albeit not based on facts. The cast had great chemistry together.
I've watched Last of The Mohicans, Tombstone and The Holy Grail over 100 times each. This is by far my favorite. The French & Indian War is often overlooked as being a vital element of North American history. Thumbs-Up to Michael Mann and the entire cast & crew---!!!
I saw the last of the Mohicans in theaters in 1982. What an experience. While it won for best sound, Deservedly so, I am still beside myself in grief that It wasn’t even nominated for best cinematography and best score…
My father took me to watch this movie at the theater when I was 14. An intense experience that left indelible memories. Watching this film for the second time 30years later just makes me appreciate even more how great it is and how well it has stood the test of time. You can totally feel all the hard work, commitment and passion that went in its making.
Love the movie, love the music. Daniel Lewis has grown to be a truly great actor, Madeliene Stowe is very easy on the eyes. Wes Studi and Russel Means were brilliant.
ha as i shared this video and typed what i type I had a similar thought...and i dont hate those Marvel movies altho im bored of them to the point of not getting excited to see them...and surely they dont have this level of passion to honest filmmaking... they work hard in different ways
Try Hostiles starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi. Maybe you'll enjoy it. I don't know if it compares to Last of the Mohicans but it definitely wasn't a typical Hollywood moneygrab.
one of my favorite movies ever. even as a 10 yr old kid this movie amazed me, the cliff scenes at end, along w the soundtrack is one of greatest scenes ever.
i am a movie aficionado and watch sometimes 2 or 3 a day in my retirement - this is on my personal top 20 or so list - for me it is nearly perfect - romance, action, costumes, history, makeup, dialogue, cast, and of course one of the best scores of all time.
They need to give Russell Means, Daniel Day-Lewis and Wes Studi all special credit for this piece, especially Wes Studi the way he played Magua😤. Such a great movie!
one of my favorite movies of all time - casting was brilliant - the music score still brings me to tears - interesting that in the book - Cora dies and the younger sister lives
The name of the guy who taught Lewis to reload while running is Mark Baker. He is a historical re-enactor. That guy who lives the life and taught lewis the other skills is a friend of Bakers. Baker has a cameo in the movie, when they are at the fort, Baker waves at Hawkeye and Unkas and calls out to them from up on the wall.
One of the best movies of all time, violent, yes, yet oh so believable and true! Thank you for this excellent cinematography, commitment to reality and the first Americans!
I don't know if I would say that. (True, I do love the movie) The book is written in early 19th century writing style that takes a bit of getting use to by the modern reader. It took me a couple of tries to get into the novel, but once I got the rhythm I really thought it was great. And placing the book in the context of entire Leatherstocking series, James Fennimore Cooper deserves to be considered the first great American novelist. The character of Uncus plays a much bigger role in the novel. Curiously, there are characters that die in the movie that live in the book (Alice and Heyword) and characters that survive in the movie that die in the book (Cora). Also there is no rivalry between Hawkeye and Heyword. Another thing the movie sidesteps the fact that Cora is biracial
Excellent point and I agree. Based on the hundreds of books which I have read and a large number of them made into movies, only a small number of books let me down. Much like yourself, I preferred the movies - 'That Last of the Mohicans' to the book and same with "Doctor Zhivago'.
I own 3 movies, and Last of the Mohicans is one of them. I watch it every summer for the past 20 years. It moves me every time, bringing a tear to my eye. All the actors and the production staff were outstanding.
Great movie, one of my favorites, great musical score, great acting, lush scenery and Madeline Stowe at her peak. Daniel Day Lewis is fantastic as well.
One of the most riveting and beautifully captured movie, every part of this movie is amazing and Lewis delivers in all fronts. And of course the musical score is equally amazing, adds so much to the movie and heightens the emotions like only good music can.
One of my top 5 favorite movies. The historical accuracies were amazing, right down to the tiniest details. The first time I saw it I was in my mid twenties at a theater. During the scene of the assault on the fort, as the camera panned across the firing cannons, a soldier held a plum-bob above a cannon while another held a protractor on top of the cannon to make sure it was at the right firing angle. It was only on the screen for a second, but that kind of attention to detail was just awesome. Great writing, great acting, and great location/effects.
Unbelievable. Total preparation. Love this movie and all involved. One of the great historical period action movies of all time. Own the “collectors” edition of it. On top of its beauty visually the performances are spectacular. And the chemistry between the romantic leads.... many years later you can still feel the heat!
Beautiful movie - historically accurate, great acting and physicality and the scenic beauty of it makes you believe they are really back in that unspoiled landscape of those days.
Cooper wanted to write a novel that gave the general flavor of an era that had ended shortly before he was born. He noted in the intro that he was not writing a history book - but he did make some of the mistakes believed in his time. MM went even further in bringing the time and characters to life in a believable way. Some of the 'history' is a little wrong - Col Monro did not die - until months later of a heart attack in Albany - but he was a broken man. However, much of the portrait of the people of the era is correct - as is the general outline of the events of 1757 in the NY wilderness.
During filming DDL was given the option to use a lighter non firing musket in scenes not involving shooting. The actual firing musket weighed around 16 pounds. The other less than half the weight. DDL chose to use the firing musket for more authenticity.
My original colonial period (firing) pa flintlock long rifle weighs in at just over 8 lbs - i don’t understand why a firing movie replica would weigh around 16 pounds?...
@@geogeorge7892 People who aren’t familiar with weapons think they are much heavier than they actually are. Same folk who think a longsword is a clumsy iron bar weighing 12lb instead of a balanced, almost-alive entity weighing about 3lb.
If I'm honest, this is probably my favorite movie. Certainly the one I've watched more than any other. I have the DVD (obviously), and had always wished there was a "making of" documentary. How I've just discovered this after all these years is beyond me. Red Ready, whomever you are, you've made my day by posting this. Thank you. I'd like to one of my favorite parts is the Cameron's cabin in the beginning of the movie. And of course the scene in the hospital, with Madeleine / Cora. There is not much to match the beauty of that face.
This was my first movie to see in the theater. I had went with my parents as a young teenager. I loved this movie the first time and have seen a bunch of times! Now all I have to do is hear the music playing in the background and I immediately know what’s on tv! Thank you so much for this beautiful masterpiece. The actors did a well job done. Loved the romances. Both with Cora and Hawkeye & Uncas & Alice. Just wish we saw more with Uncas & Alice. But this will always be a top favorite!!!!💜
Thank you Red, I've bought this movie for myself and my family four times now, and I personally haven't ever found these belated behind-the-scenes. They're much appreciated. Best wishes.
I live within a half hour of Fort William Henry, there's a museum on the spot where the battle took place and also another 40 minutes from Fort Ticonderoga (Carillon to the French where Montcalm launched his siege from). I am also directly descended from a man who fought as part of the Colonial militia raised to defend the fort from the French. I am also directly descended from Akwesasne Mohawk on my mother's side and on my father's side, my grand mother was half French-Canadian and Mohawk so my whole family is not only from this area but my ancestors on all sides fought and took part in the battles and wars from New France, to the French & Indian War, the Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
I live where a big part of this movie was filmed, I was in high school at the time and working at a flea market selling ice cream and got to meet a lot of the Native Americans who were extras working on the film. Most of the areas are still the same as seen in the movie.
Sometimes the forces of the Universe bring together the right people, at the right time, with the right ideas. When I first saw this movie at the cinema, I had no idea what it was really about, other than childhood memories of the original movie on B+W television. When the movie finished I just sat silently in my seat, in awe of it's brilliance. The locations, the cinematography, the actors, the soundtrack, the rise and fall of emotions experienced whilst watching it. To this day, when I listen to the soundtrack, or watch the movie on DVD. Nothing has changed that opinion.
This reveals how masterfully done this movie was. No detail was overlooked, and everyone looked and acted as if they were real British soldiers, frontier whites, and tribal people. It's one of my favorite movies.
An admirable movie with admirable actors who delivered better-than-admirable performances. Besides Day-Lewis, I was most impressed with Wes Studi as Magua. That was a performance that could inspire nightmares! The movie was beyond fantastic and I am so glad this was done so I could know more about it.
The last ten or so minutes of this film are probably the best in cinematic history.
Hands down. The best scene forever in my memory is where Lewis is running behind Means while firing the two muskets at the same time.

One of the best movies ever made...... the time this came out, the story, the acting, the cinematograph, EVERYTHING!! 90's was such a great time!
I love Daniel Day-Lewis, he is handsome, talented and interesting, he is a very good and an accomplished actor who always put a 100% in all his role and his role as Hawkeye in The Last of the Mohicans was no different, he is so physical in it fighting, shooting and loving the beautiful, talented and interesting Madeleine Stowe who is great as Cora Munro, I love the movie, I love them both, they are the best.
Couldn't agree more..... Just one last bit also.... You forget to mention GOAT ......!
Couldn't agree more !
He is a GOAT.
ONE of the best films, ever made. ---------The portrayal of the Native American ----------the great story itself---------the romance, with Madeleine Stowe, more beautiful, than ever. --------------The score-------the cinematography ----------a Masterpiece. ------------------------------------WolfSky9, 73 y/o
Paul Simmons yes. Not to mention the cinematography and music that went perfectly with each scene, it was pretty accurate historically.
LOL werewolves or spaceships
Finally a movie that told NOTHING about how usa treated their natives....
We where all native people in the movie
@@vinegum8835 There were wars. The USA won. Time to move on.
I've watched Last of The Mohicans, Tombstone and The Holy Grail over 100 times each. This is by far my favorite. The French & Indian War is often overlooked as being a vital element of North American history. Thumbs-Up to Michael Mann and the entire cast & crew---!!!
Saw it on the big screen in '92. Loved it!
AssinnippiJack would have been amazing to watch on a large screen. 😊🇨🇦
Me to ! Lisbon 92... first time I went to the cinema to... on my 13th birthday 😊

Me, too. It’s awesome.
michael mann you are a genious because that i one of the best movies ever made ..BRAVO ..the music is magnificent ...
Don't forget Manhunter.
I saw the last of the Mohicans in theaters in 1982. What an experience. While it won for best sound, Deservedly so, I am still beside myself in grief that It wasn’t even nominated for best cinematography and best score…
@@Defender78 last of the mohicans was made in 1992 ....
I remember seeing this for the first time. “Stay alive! I will find you!” Goosebumps!
Would have enjoyed hearing from Wes Studi and Eric Schweig. Love them. Thanks for upload.
Fran Looving I've seen Wes Studi speak about it on video elsewhere, but don't recall commentary from Eric
@@happydogg312 Wes was great in Dances with Wolves
My father took me to watch this movie at the theater when I was 14. An intense experience that left indelible memories.
Watching this film for the second time 30years later just makes me appreciate even more how great it is and how well it has stood the test of time. You can totally feel all the hard work, commitment and passion that went in its making.
Love the movie, love the music. Daniel Lewis has grown to be a truly great actor, Madeliene Stowe is very easy on the eyes. Wes Studi and Russel Means were brilliant.
Madeliene is a great actress too, not just a pretty face
@@Emily-tm6wf let me guess you think that comment is sexist because they didnt specify that she was a great actress?

Some of the most beautiful music ever.
Why doesn't Hollywood make movies like this anymore?I am tired of those marvel movies.
Ali u
ha as i shared this video and typed what i type I had a similar thought...and i dont hate those Marvel movies altho im bored of them to the point of not getting excited to see them...and surely they dont have this level of passion to honest filmmaking... they work hard in different ways
True but there are good movies out there being made you just got to search. Independent films, foreign films etc
Try Hostiles starring Christian Bale, Rosamund Pike, and Wes Studi. Maybe you'll enjoy it. I don't know if it compares to Last of the Mohicans but it definitely wasn't a typical Hollywood moneygrab.
to make massive amounts of money with cgi and crappy acting with easily generated material
I just saw an interview with Madeleine Stowe from December 2019. She's 61. Looks like she's 40. A stunningly beautiful 40. Wow.
Madeleine lives just down the road from me here in Luckenbach TX...she is incredible
@@cammacgregor9354 It's always a good sign when they DON"T live in Hollywood.
I remember watching his movie on VHS. The production, story, scenery, acting was brilliant. A true classic.
one of my favorite movies ever. even as a 10 yr old kid this movie amazed me, the cliff scenes at end, along w the soundtrack is one of greatest scenes ever.
i am a movie aficionado and watch sometimes 2 or 3 a day in my retirement - this is on my personal top 20 or so list - for me it is nearly perfect - romance, action, costumes, history, makeup, dialogue, cast, and of course one of the best scores of all time.
This movie should be required watching.
It was for me in high school many moons ago. Love it still, love the score.
BeeSeeBee One of my absolute all time favorites...on many levels.
I agree.
Required? Yeah, for corporal punishment!
They need to give Russell Means, Daniel Day-Lewis and Wes Studi all special credit for this piece, especially Wes Studi the way he played Magua😤. Such a great movie!
One of the best movies ever made. The script and story line were magnificent. Every actor, even the “extras”, were superb.
One of the most moving movies I’ve ever seen I watch it quite often love the scene about when he speaks about the stars it’s absolutely beautiful
one of my favorite movies of all time - casting was brilliant - the music score still brings me to tears - interesting that in the book - Cora dies and the younger sister lives
That one call got him a SAG card!
Hey bub
Michael Mann captured the forest scenes as N.C. Wyeth did with a paint brush. Beautiful shadows of emerald & dark amber.
I can't express just how much I love this comment ❤
Thanks!
Yes! The forest becomes one the characters in the film by the end.
Daniel day Lewis took the Hawk-eye character to a different level
One of the best movies of all time, violent, yes, yet oh so believable and true! Thank you for this excellent cinematography, commitment to reality and the first Americans!
One of the extremely rare instances where a movie based on a novel is way better than the novel.
its not hard. the book is hugely archaically written. the movie is more faithful to the times.
@@martingenerous1678 There are plenty of classic novels from that time that are MUCH better written.
Excellent point and I agree. Based on the hundreds of books which I have read and a large number of them made into movies, only a small number of books let me down. Much like yourself, I preferred the movies - 'That Last of the Mohicans' to the book and same with "Doctor Zhivago'.
I agree...I read the book one time....I've watched the movie DOZENS of times!
This movie will always pass the test of time. Beautifully made, well written and staffed. I’m a veteran and indigenous.
Altogether the music, scenery, language and casting, it’s a stunning movie.
Epic storyline, great cast, beautiful soundtrack. More movies like this should be made.
I love this movie. One of the best ever!
That's what amazed me.... Running with the rifle+ re loading.... In the rain!! Well done movie.... One of my favorites!!
So beautiful especially with the Irish and Scottish music.
Believe me, there are still many parts of America that are beautiful but my God I can only imagine how gorgeous the land was 400 years ago 🇺🇸 🇺🇸
My favorite movie of all time. Action, romance, music, writing, cinematography, acting....few movies have ever put it together as well as this one.
LOVE this movie! I've watched it many times. The soundtrack is fabulous.
really cool talk about the commitment he made, it showed in an all time great movie
Might be my favorite movie of all time. I’ve never seen anything more graceful than Hawkeye running
Magnificent movie, cast, music, location, characters, and history of that era portrayed so well. So sad we don't see movies like this any longer.
Thank you Red, I've bought this movie for myself and my family four times now, and I personally haven't ever found these belated behind-the-scenes. They're much appreciated. Best wishes.
All in this movie is perfect, the actors, the story, the music, the glory of the natural people, the respect to the eath, the spiritulism,... Thanks
One of my favorite movies of all time. Madeline Stowe is so freaking beautiful too!
Please, more movies like this.....the BS in cinemas today is pure, mindless dribble!

Last of the mohican's and heat are examples of a master DIRECTOR!!! HE NEEDS TO MAKE MORE FILMS
Very simply...a great movie...taken to the level of art...about life in North America in those wild, random days...
I was obsessed with movie still am
This movie pulls me in. The story, acting, epic scenery and absolutely amazing soundtrack, it makes me feel… everything.
The film is an absolute masterpiece.
This reveals how masterfully done this movie was. No detail was overlooked, and everyone looked and acted as if they were real British soldiers, frontier whites, and tribal people. It's one of my favorite movies.
Daniel Day-Lewis is such a versatile actor.
Favorite movie favorite soundtrack, favorite hero. RIP Russell Means
An admirable movie with admirable actors who delivered better-than-admirable performances. Besides Day-Lewis, I was most impressed with Wes Studi as Magua. That was a performance that could inspire nightmares! The movie was beyond fantastic and I am so glad this was done so I could know more about it.
Should of won Studi an Academy award.
