The 6 Year Wait: Why Tesla Hasn't Entered the Indian Market (Yet)

  • Tesla is the world's most valuable car company and has its presence in most countries around the world, but not in India. Why?
In this video, we try to understand the reasons why Tesla hasn't entered the Indian market yet and how Elon Musk can take his electric car company to India.
    00:00 Tesla Intro
00:55 Why Tesla Hasn't Entered the Indian Market?
    01:41 The Money Problem
06:24 Infrastructure Problems - Crazy Roads and Electric Charging Stations
11:41 Government Policies Favouring Local Manufacturers
13:14 The Solution - Policy Reform, Energy Solutions, Superbikes or Superautos
Tesla Intro: Tesla is the world’s most valuable car company with a market cap of over $382 billion (Rs 28 lakh crore). It is worth more than Fiat Chrysler, Ford, Ferrari, GM, BWM, Honda, and Volkswagen combined. It has a presence all over the world including United States, China, Germany, Netherlands, Canada, Mexico, pretty much everywhere in Europe, Jordan, the UAE, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand.
Why Tesla Hasn't Entered the Indian Market: There are more than a few very good reasons that are keeping Tesla from coming to India but here are some of the important ones - The money problem, wealth distribution, lack of electric vehicle (EV) Infrastructure including crazy roads and EV charging stations, along with protectionist government policies favouring local manufacturers.
The Money Problem: The cheapest electric car Tesla has on the market right now, the Model 3, without any of the bells and whistles that Tesla is known for, costs $37,990 (Rs 28 lakh). For a country, like India, where the average income of a regular person is Rs 1.76 lakh ($2,338) per annum, the cost of buying a Tesla is higher than in most countries. How High? Well, if you ignore expenses like rent, food, their phone bill, and transportation, and the insane import tax, it would take more than 16 years for an average Indian to save up enough to buy a Tesla.
Infrastructure Problems (Crazy Roads and Lack of EV Charging Stations): Firstly, let's talk about India's crazy roads. We know that all Tesla's electric cars now come with Autopilot pre-installed. Considering the unique problem of Indian roads in terms of potholes and speed breakers that kills hundreds every year and crowded roads, Tesla's autopilot could end up killing more people than making life easier.
Then we have the problem of the lack of electric vehicle charging stations. There are approximately 250 charging stations in India. Now, according to Inc42, India has barely sold 8000 electric cars in the last 6 years. That means India not only has a lack of EV charging stations but there aren’t enough electric cars on the road either. Also, when it comes to electric charging stations, distribution is the key. Majority of the charging stations in India are located in metros, while some states don’t even have a single EV charging station. This is another reason why Tesla is not in India yet.
Government Policies favouring Local Manufacturers: Take for example the import tax. For cars that cost more than $40,000 (Rs 30 lakh), import tax is an insane 100% and 60% if the car costs less than $40,000 (Rs 30 lakh). Tesla usually funds the construction of its factories with the money that it makes from Tesla sales in the country that the factory is built in. Of course, the issue here is that Tesla can’t sell its cars in India because they won’t make any money from them because of the import tax. No money means no factory. Which means no Tesla in India.
The Solution (Policy Reform, Energy Solutions, Cyberbikes or Cyberautos ): Firstly, policy reform. What if the Indian government were to make an exception? For example, they could temporarily waive these taxes on a case-by-case basis for EV manufacturers who are willing to commit to building EV factories and charging stations in India. This would be a win-win for India and foreign EV manufacturers.
Second, Elon Musk can take a completely different approach - offering energy solutions to Indians via Tesla Energy. And this could be a huge opportunity for Tesla - in fact, it could be a much more lucrative opportunity than electric vehicles, because the demand for a predictable, consistent supply of electricity is much higher than the demand for luxury electric cars. Then, once they’ve established a foothold in the Indian energy space, they would be in a better position to tackle the EV market.
Thirdly, it’s well-known that India has more two-wheelers than cars. So, what if Elon Musk focused on launching Superbikes in India instead of cars?

*Important:* At 5:15 a map was used which excludes portions of India which are claimed by China, despite the fact that they are obviously owned by India. I, Caleb, was the one who edited this video, and completely missed this detail due to the fact that I am not too familiar with the geography of India - while making this blue map of India, I grabbed a silhouette off of Google maps to use as a template in Photoshop, but failed to realize that the silhouette excluded these Chinese-claimed parts of India. I absolutely should have double-checked this to ensure the map's accuracy, but failed to do so. *We are not in support of China claiming these parts of India* and so in order to rectify this, we have intentionally blurred the map of India in an effort to avoid spreading false information.
Update: On October 2nd, 2020, Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla would be launching in India in 2021, and thanked Tesla fans for waiting for the EV manufacturer! Tesla is
also in discussions with the industries department of the Karnataka government to set up an R&D centre in Bengaluru.
Update: Nitin Gadkari has officially announced that Tesla will be coming to India in 2021.

Indian constitution claims those territories based on outdated map cartography done by Britishers a century ago, but for all practical purposes are owned and operated in by China. So there is the Indian nationalism in me which says it belongs to India, but a practical brain which knows the real world scenario.
You should look up into the territorial dispute of Kashmir and how it is divided up between India, Pakistan and China if you are interested in Geo-Politics.
Apart from that, this was a great video and you summarized the possibility of Tesla coming to India pretty nicely.

I am Techie from India & I have multiple startups in developing few of the complex projects in AI & ML.
And when I got to know about Tesla Autopilot features few years back, no wonder, till today I discuss about *Tesla on Indian Roads* with my colleagues or friends.
In those discussions, one point I always notices is ---- *If TESLA can pull it's AI/ML based fully functional Autopilot feature in India, then ELON will be considered as GOD here*
And it's not exaggeration, that's absolutely TRUE. That technology will really be an engineering marvel of all; which I hope it happens soon, bcoz you know its ELON MUSK over there you humankind & he is kind of an ALIEN who can pull anything if it's Challenging to him.
If that happens, most of Indians start buying Tesla's which is one way a huge market, and rest others car owners also tend to shift to Tesla gradually.
If such happens, the same Jeff Bezos thing repeats like you know where Amazon & Bezos market value stands before & after entering to Indian market right...!?!
Business in India is all about population & number game.
Like it depends on selling one item with a profit of 10$ for 10-people make 100$...
Or else sellling one item with a profit of just 1$ for 100-people makes 100$...
That's the Buss-model what most works in India bcoz imagine running 10-Tesla Cars in a same street bcoz of taking high profits less business -;- And now imagine 100-Tesla Cars in that same street bcoz of less profits high business.
The same thing what Jeff Bezos Amazon did with Prime Subscription Price in India & rest of the world.
And many many more it goes on, if I type more.
So stopping it here for now.😁
*And Thanks for making this Video @Celeb* --- it is very well detailed & the mentioning with Indian conversion Values for better understanding to Indians & all others too. I liked that part very much. Appreciate it & subscribed now.

I have a feeling that the emergency features will actually make driving in India more difficult. For example, automatic swerving to avoid collision will actually cause some accidents, as I know in India people don't mind driving straight towards each other at full speed, and then missing each other by inches at the very last second. Also, squeezing through traffic with your mirrors up is a way of life here - Tesla will be beeping and trying to avoid collisions in such scenarios. In a way, Indian drivers are the most talented in the world - they keep calm in situations where people from countries like the United States or Canada would be panicking. -Caleb

Hi Praniel, while I do hope this happens, I highly doubt it will. This is not something that I have seen happening from other luxury brands - the price remains constant (or increased if factors like import tax are at play) most of the time with luxury products, and the company selling the product pockets the difference. But if you know of some examples of the price decreasing, please let me know, I might just be unaware of such examples. Because you're right, labor costs will be quite low in India. -Caleb

But the recent budget models (SE & XR) which were assembled in India had good price cuts due to local assembly in the Foxcon plant at Chennai. Backstage With Millionaires . Indian EVs like Nexon have a range of around 312 km with a battery size of 30 kWh and still costs ₹14,00,000. I know that Tesla has a luxurious feel , make super charging stations and have to spend on research and development. But 70,00,000 is a huge sum for most Indians. Autopilot won’t work in India. And Indian EVs price will be coming down as lithium batteries can getting cheaper every year. They will have a hard time competing in India among middle and upper middle classes.

Indian people are sensible enough to not let their Tesla drive on "normal" roads, most of us will only use autopilot in highways and I'm sure. This will drastically lower down the accident rates on indian highways, so I think Tesla would dominate indian market. And if the import taxes are lowered by any chance, boom, literally every person with a good income will own a Tesla and guess what, the pollution would get lowered down to such great levels. It would also help if tesla also introduces an affordable renewable energy source, it would impact the climate drastically.
I really hope that in 2021, the price of tesla does not exceed 60Lakhs after taxes, after that, it would be unaffordable for most of us. And if tesla comes without taxes, which is 21 lakhs in the Indian market, you would see a Tesla literally everywhere.

@Neel Javia I have a theory , We Indians doesnt follow Lanes becasue percantage of lanes marked perfectly ( maybe 1-10% ) . Thats because maintaining marker lanes is expensive even on National Highways . Its both people and system like feedback loop . Road System doesnt work properly due to low funds by Govt. -> low Income Tax payments (2-3% pay tax in india ) its less than people bought new cars bought every year . From 60 years we learn as we Indians doesnt want to pay tax , its best to remove it completely and create new system like add 1-15% transaction cost on every product based on type of product and service while paying similarly like GST. I stuided that in Singapore or Malaysia , every 10%tax on transaction cost collected spent on military . So each and every Percantage should be decided like 1% on Roads , 2% on Police and internal Security , 5% on infrastructure development , ect.,

Hi Bhavya, thank you for the comment - please don't take offense at me disagreeing with you and Abhishek, but I honestly feel that the same situation exists everywhere that Teslas are available. For the time being, most high-quality EVs are more expensive than petrol/diesel vehicles in the same price range, even after you factor in cost savings from subsidies and lifetime fuel consumption vs. lifetime electricity consumption.
That being said, I do agree with you about needing a stronger reason to switch. In the United States, a lot of the people who are buying Teslas are doing so because they want to feel good about themselves and they want to feel that they are helping the earth by slowing global warming. But in India, people are much more price-conscious, and I think also here in India people are a bit more desensitized to the whole global warming thing. It can be 45°C in Delhi, the air is unbreathable due to air pollution, but people will still chose the A3 over the Model 3. And I guess the only way to fix this is to make EVs cheaper than petrol/diesel cars. -Caleb

Even I don't want to see Tesla come in and dominate and monopolize India's EV market. At the same time though, as per Elon Musk's tweet, it is this 100% tax that has actually prevented Tesla from setting up a factory here in India - as per their company policy, they don't build factories until they've made enough from selling Teslas in the country where the factory would be located. I guess in a way, if they can sell enough Teslas to pay for a factory, then they know without any doubt that the factory is a worthwhile investment. However, I do hope that either the government or Tesla as a company decides to change their policies so that a factory is built in India soon! -Caleb
