  • I found this odd looking plane at a junk store for $10. I wasn't sure of the maker but the shape of the body and the adjustment mechanism was very interesting. Once I started working on it, I figured out it was a Sargent 718.

I recently picked up a Sargent 714 C at a garage sale for $20. It was in much better condition than the plane you're showing. It cleaned up pretty well in a few hours and I can see that I'm really going to like it. I'm still not quite sure how to tell if the cap lever - chip breaker is adjusted well because I can't see how close it comes to the end of the plane iron. Looking forward to seeing your next episode.

Oh sweet, I have a 710 and I was curious how different it is compared to the longer planes, that knob tilting feature is neat!

How funny! I just literally finished restoring a Sargent 718 Autoset! Careful with that front knob though. Because of how it moves, I accidentally re-cracked my split in the exact same spot yours is already split. Also, you're missing a screw on the lever cap...or cap...not really a "lever" cap. The reason this plane has an adjustable front knob is for working on odd angles. A few companies made adjustable knobs and totes.
