👍🐯👍, your video helped me better understand what exactly was going on under the hood of a shaws patent, when buying a plane online almost no one shows the most important part to me which is the adjustment mechanism. I knew something different was there but didn't know what. The video helped me also make a decision on purchasing one.
    Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
    Cheers.

Thanks! The dearth of information about the nuts and bolts of vintage handplanes, and my frustration as a result, was a bit reason that I started the channel.

I have a Sargent 409 made in 1946 (the logo on the iron was changed in that year and it has the older style lettering on the cap iron). Any way, with a little "Fettling", as Paul Sellers calls it, and a proper sharpening it's a great plane; especially for the $10/00 I gave a couple of buddies for it in the mid '90's when they needed a little beer money. The tote is typical for planes of that era right up almost to now in that the sides are flat(ish) and the front and back were rounded with a shaper. Since the horn of the tote had a piece missing, instead of trying to fix it I found a tote & knob on e-bay that must have come off a much earlier one and the tote has a lot more attention to hand shaping. It feels phenomenal. Even better than my mid '90's Record No. 4. I will make use of your paraffin wax tip for the appropriate mating surfaces on all my hand planes. Thank you.

Sargent still exists today in New Haven, CT. Seems they only manufacture door security hardware these days.

The betting surface on the bedrock is much greater then the Sergeant therefore more stability I own both I prefer the bedrock over the Sergeant I do believe that Wood River and Lyle Nelson pattern there planes after the Stanley bedrock due to the fact it is as far superior design

This is certainly the prevailing attitude about the bedrock design. However, I've been unable to conclusively demonstrate that it makes a positive difference. The Bailey vs Bedrock video goes into this in more detail.

@@MarkSLSmith1, The commenter you responded to seems to have had a 180º, vertical rhinoplasty. (That's when they tilt their heads about as far back as possible so they may look down their long & pointy's at the rest of their lesser's and just rag & brag.)

Good review. Seems fair and unbiased. Sure be cool to add in a Union X4 and a Ohio Mark's patent into that head to head.

Thanks, Casey! The Union X4 is in the queue. Unfortunately, I don't own an Ohio Tool Mark's patent plane.
Spread the word. The more people who view and comment, the merrier.
