  • This is the first in a series of videos where I'll be talking about various aspects of Season 2! One of my criticisms with the first season was how little we got from Usopp and Sanji, so I've been hoping they get a bit more love in Season 2! Let me know what you'd like to see from these characters and what other topics you'd like me to address!

    As someone who watched live action first. I never realised how important Usopp and Sanji were like you mentioned. I kind of just saw Luffy, Zoro and Nami as the main characters and Usopp and Sanji as side characters that are there but don't do much. Watching the anime changed my mind completely and now Usopp is probably one of my favourite characters, especially after water 7

      @@danielpinatecaballero2612yes about so. season one covered 95 chapters in 8 episodes.
      the alabasta saga is 117 chapters, and they also have the 5 remaining east blue chapters (logue town) to adapt, so they have 122 chapters to adapt.
      two more episodes should be plenty of time. Little Garden can easily be cut down. And even though alabasta needs to be long, a significant portion of the second half especially is just right after fight for like 30 chapters, so the pacing will be quite fast.

    As someone who has only seen the live action, Usopp's "brave warrior of the sea" came out of nowhere. A flashback to his mom? At first I thought he was lying and had a different motive he was trying to hide. It felt like I missed something.

      it’s kinda like that in the original series too. he’s a coward for the whole of the east blue saga and then states he wants to be brave at the barrel scene.

      @cwega2463 This is simply not true...just watching this video alone proves otherwise...his desire to become a brave warrior of the sea is one that was highlighted both overtly and subtly throughout EAST BLUE, he wasn't just " a coward" bro syrup village is ryt there did u miss all that???....hell he even blatantly says what he aspires to be in Arlong Park so by the time the barrel scene shows up it is WELL ESTABLISHED bruv idk what ur talking abt😅

    I couldn't agree more with the insights this video is given. Yet I still think the Water 7 saga is really where Usopp has his moments to shine, especially with the Going Merry being no longer in good use for him nor the Straw Hats. Then it leads to the fight between him and Luffy.
    Those moments were so traumatizing enough for Usopp to grow and move forward as a character. Balancing both his bravery and cowardice. Can't be scared nor grovel all the time when things go sideways nor don't always go your way. Our favorite cowardly, pointy-nosed, knucklehead pirate warrior of the sea-in-training needs to evolve as we all know he has as the series currently progressed.
    Hopefully those moments and the saga be adapted into live-action soon. Want to see how and what the writers and the actor, Jacob Gibson (who plays Usopp in the live-action One Piece) will bring to the table with those iconic scenes from both the anime and manga

      @Natsymir 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Interesting! I just read the manga for the first time, and felt quite disappointed by the resolution to the conflict between Usopp and Luffy in Water 7, because Usopp ends up having to apologise to Luffy, even though Luffy demonstrated a clear contempt for weakness that felt very unsympathetic to my mind. This, to me, undermined Usopp's whole arc, because I felt that Luffy was at fault just as much as Usopp, yet he never apologised or shows any appreciation for Usopp's significant achievements during Enies lobby - only Sanji does. I came off the whole Water 7 saga liking Luffy a bit less than before, and feeling that maybe Usopp shouldn't have rejoined that crew after all, since hardly anyone there seems to actually appreciate his efforts, nor his huge personal investment in Going Merry.

    • @kennydowning6013
      @kennydowning6013 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Natsymir I noticed that. Good eye, man. I've always wondered if Usopp actually wants to move forward with the Straw Hats after what they gone through.
      Well if they fixed the Arlong Park arc with Nami's backstory and motive in the live-action to make it made sense for the general audience then maybe they could do the same for the Water 7 (if the series moves forward to it).
      Example: Like if Jacob Gibson's Usopp got into an HUGE argument with Iñaki Godoy's Luffy, That will be a highlight in the series as it will be very deep and heartfelt compared to the anime and manga. They fought then sometime after the fight with CP9 with Usopp's help (disguised as Soge King), Luffy will then realize what he has done due to his selfishness and greed as captain. That's when Mackenyu's Zoro or maybe Emily Rudd's Nami as well called him out on it, not to be so damn absorbed or arrogant rather than acknowledge the needs and dreams of his friends/crew by dragging them down to his power trip just to achieve his lifetime goal/dream while at the same time telling him to quit being so soft or ignorant when things go rough, especially when travelling over to the Grand Line as a captain of his crew. Bottom line/lesson: Don't be such an selfish, misguided, lousy captain!
      Water 7 was the moment when all the characters actually grow as they need to stop acting more like pirates when certain situations called for it while venturing out in the new world. Of course, at the same time be a family.
      That's my two cents on how it will make sense for the general audience in the live-action series. Since they made the Arlong Park arc and Nami's backstory make sense to fit, then they can do the same to Water 7. We'll see

    • @symbological
      @symbological 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Natsymir I think you misunderstood the root of their argument. When does Luffy show contempt for Usopp's weakness? If anything, he holds contempt for FRANKY for mugging Usopp. Unfortunately, Luffy destroying Franky's hideout in retaliation isn't what Usopp needed to feel supported in that moment. He connected with the ship and worried that Luffy might abandon him too. Instead of explaining this, Usopp got angry and accused Luffy of being the type of man who abandons his crewmates. Luffy, who values his friends for more than their strength or achievements, took this as an attack on his leadership and character. THAT'S why Luffy reacted harshly
      Luffy not seeing the argument for what it was (a trauma response), was probably the biggest mistake he made. But he's not a mind-reader. He sees Usopp as a dear friend and valued part of the crew. Usopp's accusations were both unexpected and hurtful, but also came from a very raw and vulnerable place for Usopp. For Usopp, it was very much a "I'm leaving Luffy before he leaves me" type situation that's 100% understandable given Usopp's background and insecurities. But of course Luffy would never willingly leave a friend behind. That's the real tragedy of their falling out
      If Usopp hadn't escalated things by challenging Luffy to a duel and quitting, they probably would have resolved the issue on their own. Of course, that's not what happened. But by the end of the saga, Luffy has ALREADY forgiven Usopp. He's ready to have Usopp back on the team, and he's clearly upset when it seems like Usopp might not ask to rejoin them after all
      In the end, the argument isn't what Usopp had to apologize for. It was the duel. Even then, it was only because Zoro reminded everyone that they couldn't ignore the fact that Usopp had challenged the Captain to a duel, and that Usopp no longer wanted to live with the outcome of that duel. At that point, things go far beyond a typical argument between friends, and it needed to be properly acknowledged and addressed before they could all safely sail together again (something that SANJI, of all people, understood and agreed with)

      @Natsymir 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@symbological very good points! You might be right. But what really didn't sit right with me, and felt to me like contempt for weakness, was Luffy's comment like "as if you could ever defeat me" immediately after winning the fuel against Usopp. That, more than anything else, made me strongly side with Usopp in that conflict.

    • @symbological
      @symbological 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Natsymir "You know as well as I do, that you could never win against me," is another way I've seen that line translated. I think that fits the spirit of what Luffy was saying here. Basically, they BOTH knew it was going to end this way. Luffy is fully aware of Usopp's limitations in physical combat. And we know Usopp is aware of them too. Why else would he resort to underhanded tactics like pretending to cough up blood, if not to make Luffy hesitate and hold back in delivering a finishing blow?
      Luffy isn't taunting Usopp or disparaging his weakness. He is frustrated that a close friend would challenge him to a duel, despite knowing it could only end with Luffy hurting Usopp -- which hurts Luffy too. This was not a fight Luffy wanted to have, and this isn't a victory he relishes in. But Usopp's formal challenge left Luffy with little choice. (The previous arc even hinges on this one pirate rule of issuing and accepting duels, which adds more context to what's happening here.)
      In fact, it's clearly *Usopp* who can't accept his own weakness, to the point where he is the one who holds HIMSELF in contempt. Rather than trusting that his friends love him for who he is, he lashes out and leaves on his own terms before Luffy has a chance to discard him like Merry. Interestingly, Robin is in the EXACT SAME headspace for much of the arc! She gives herself over to the WG, because she'd rather die than suffer the pain of being discarded by the SHs for being a liability. It's a thematic parallel Usopp and Robin both share, which ties into the saga's overall thesis: "It's never a crime to exist. No one was born to be alone."
      That's why I don't really see Luffy vs. Usopp as a conflict that the reader needs to "pick sides" for. Instead, it's a tragic byproduct of Usopp's fear of getting ditched like Merry, in the same way Robin's disappearance was a result of her own fear of abandonment. In both situations, Luffy wants to accept them back with open arms
      By the end of the arc, Usopp learns to trust that Luffy won't abandon him and fearlessly puts himself (the weakest!!) in harm's way when it looks like Luffy's lost his fight with Rob Lucci. Usopp knows he'll only survive if Luffy gets back up...and that his wellbeing is all the incentive Luffy needs in that moment to keep fighting
      Just like Luffy chose Usopp to be his cornerman during the Davy Back Fight, Usopp freely steps into that same role to help Luffy defeat Rob Lucci. Usopp is confident there are things only he can do, just like there are things only Luffy can do. He trusts that he can help Luffy be his best self by accepting that Luffy cares about him for who he is, not for what he does -- weaknesses and all. THAT'S how Usopp finally reaches a place where he wants to sail with Luffy again
      The resolution to Luffy and Usopp's conflict tied the whole saga together for me, personally

    I think they will cover Logue Town and Laboon at reverse mountain in episode one and have it be anywhere from 1hour 10 mins to 1 hour 20 mins. giving each arc about 40 minutes each. the perfect amount imo. since season one also had a slightly longer opening episode than the rest of the season, I feel like season 2 will as well, especially with the increased length of season 2.
    Both arcs combined are only 10 chapters, it’s incredibly short. that’s easy to be done in that amount of time. and realistically they will cut out the whole part of getting stuck inside laboon and the whole robot aspect since it literally never comes up again.

    I have been campaigning to play Chopper for a while and I often see Usopp and Chopper as the "Shaggy and Scooby" of the group, as in they're both scaredy-cats but they often face their fears together. Chopper is important in Alabasta when most of the crew is captured by Crocodile and Sanji is causing a distraction outside the casino. Not to mention all the injuries everybody gets and Chopper has to face the fact that he's the ship's doctor (he forgets at first) and patch everybody up.

      No need to put the entire Alabasta arc in this season 2. A great cliffhanger would be to end with the first Crocodile/Luffy fight, won by the corsair leaving Luffy to be swallowed up by the sand (before being saved by Robin at start of season 3). While the rest of the crew is stuck in the desert and the rebellion prepares to attack the capital. Maximum climax. And what's more, it would give more room in episodes to deepen the previous arcs (from Loguetown to Drum).😊

My only question about Usopp's activities during these adventures is how are we going to communicate the size difference between our two dueling giants and our intrepid crew. As for Sanji, I expect the same level of disarming smoothness and banger cuisine we saw in the first season... and the moment I'm most looking forward to, Mr Prince saving everyone's butts in the Rain Dinners Casino.

    Live action inner dialog is a difficult thing to accomplish, unlike a thought bubble in the manga. Usopp's existential crisis and decision to change would, I think, be awkward at best in the live action version. The producers aren't using audible inner dialogs (thoughts) in the first season, and I don't see them chasing to use them going forward. Usopp deciding, when it came down to battling the fishmen, to be clever was a moment to cheer him on, and worked just fine. His declaration to become a brave warrior harkens back to his decision to participate in the fight rather than hide.

      Yeah I really liked the adaptation but I think cutting that scene was MASSIVE mistake because it's literally the start of Usopp's character arc for the rest of the series. I doubt Netflix is going to keep his line where he says he's going to "eye-fuck the shit out of the mermaids" (going by the anime translation).

    I don't know if they'll have time to adapt Little Garden unless they up the episode count for Season 2. They may have to skip it like the 4Kids dub did. They may also have to make some significant cuts to Loguetown to fit it into a single episode or spend a full two episodes there. Maybe they even skip Loguetown (aside from the prologue in Season 1), since the previous season ended at Reverse Mountain anyway, so then Smoker, Buggy, and Alvida track the Straw Hats to Whiskey Peak instead, where everyone ends up getting mixed up with Baroque Works.
    Meanwhile, I think Drum Island really needs a full two episodes, and Alabasta itself still needs as much time as it can get.
