Boris Johnson sparks row, calling Scottish devolution a ‘disaster’

  • Was Boris Johnson intending to throw a political thunder flash across the Scottish border by calling devolution a disaster? (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Whether he did or not, his effective disparaging of the Scottish Parliament and twenty years of Scottish rule has achieved just that.
And however casual his remark might have been, the SNP says it will not be forgotten.

@MGazT Last time the referendum came around the good people of Scotland had no idea that England was two years removed from making the biggest and most obvious geopolitical blunder since Hitler tried to start a land war in Russia headed into winter. A lot can change in six years. England has demonstrated to Scotland that it's more trouble than its worth. The union of the EU is more beneficial than that of the UK alone, and if they have to choose they'll choose the latter. They voted hard against Brexit, and once it goes through and the UK becomes the Albania of the North the Scots will likely have no qualms with jumping ship. They knew this was a bad idea from the get go.

Okay, in what way is Boris Johnson as head of the Tory party in any way worse than all the others over the past decade? Is it Covid? Because spoiler alert, he didn’t cause it. Quite frankly I think he did as well as anyone could expect from this country with our mannerisms. People need to start fucking well growing up and stop trying to blame the government for everything when some need to take responsibility for their own mistakes. People were warned about Covid, yet they still went out and acted foolishly and got it anyway. They’ve got no one to blame but themselves. Quite frankly the only thing I can fault of the Tory party for is the lack of pushing forward with EVs and greener energy to help cut the UKs global warming impact.

When you have all the political spectrum, from the left-wing of the Labour Party to the hard-right in UKIP all agreed that this is the worst UK government in history, then something is seriously wrong with the Brexit Tory party, especially the corruption around the Coronavirus contracts, where billions of taxpayers money was given to corrupt Tory donors, for projects that didn’t work, never before seen in UK history.
Also sources close to Boris Johnson say that he was only interested in the title of Prime Minister, and is not that interested in the hard-work involved, and may be leaving in early 2021, as everything in the UK starts to unravel. Also he is interested in wasting £30 billion on unnecessary Navy upgrades, but won’t be investing in the NHS or school meals for poor kids. The incompetence and corruption is staggering... 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💰💰💰

Any basic knowledge of politics or history could tell you that. There is nothing controversial about what he said. t was obvious at the time that Blair was sowing seeds that were likely to cause trouble for the future of the UK at some point down the line.
If you want to argue that Scotalnd neded its own government for whatever reason that is fine and dandy but has no bearing on Johnson's comments. That it has been diastrous for maintaining the UK as a unified state is not debateable.

I can’t speak about Scotland because I don’t live there but down here in England we get Scottish independence thrust down our throats on a pretty regular basis by both the SNP in Westminster and Scots who comment on TH-cam - the English public constantly has to put up with this shite and yet guess what - we have absolutely no say in the matter and quite frankly probably want Scotland to leave the UK more than the Scots do - I also have English friends who live just outside of Edinburgh and they tell me that anti-English sentiment is on the up and more and more Scots are openly rude to them - this is a terrible form of racism and far removed from the Scotland I knew when I lived there - don’t blame us for your predicament - you had a chance for independence and blew it - blame your countrymen who voted to stay in the UK if you are going to blame anyone - furthermore the English is more than aware that when we had a chance to vote for our independence we took it and this despite the deadweight of the Scots who voted against it - instead of whinging at us you should support the English public because we want what you want - just go and take the hundreds of thousands of Scots who live down here in England with you

Scotland can absolutely stand on its own two feet, it has the skills, the resources, the people and an excellent, almost Scandinavian view of how to serve its population. Free higher education and more spent on all tiers of education in general, more per capita on health care, far more sensible laws and legal system, less kowtowing to the financial rulers of the City of London.
What do they have to lose but their chains? If they vote for independence I'll move there like a shot, it would be great to live in a pro EU Denmark Mk 2.0.
EDIT - there are people with something to lose, the Aristocratic land owners originating from Gordonstoun and Eton, along with Shell, BP and Exon. Says it all really.

what boris has to remember during a hung parliament, if the SNP had not been created, there was a hugely majoritive turn out for labour in scotland, essentially removing 5million labor votes (give or take), this has made it possible for ther coalition alliance govenment to slip through by a scandal (public did not get to vote between labour and alliance), but they certainly wouldn't be in power had devolution not happened I believe - stay safe during corona - have a nice day :)

I have witnessed for myself how the SNP are obsessed with feeding on (abusing) devolution to further their political obsession with Scottish separation from the union. The Sottish people are not being given a 'straight' alternative to independence (if people are honest, the SNP would have Scotland leave one union only then to try and join another, the SNP are also in favor over-centralized political gaming yet criticize Westminster for this).

Devolution will remain popular until will fundamentally restructure the economic and political structures that have failed people at the local level in favor of over-centralization. People are tired of being told what they NEED by those running a centrally planned machine designed to filter resources 'upstairs' (we need to start telling the privileged and the super-rich what they NEED)

Towards the end of last week, while the courtiers’ power struggle still raged at Downing Street, I had an exchange of texts with an ex-minister. What did this experienced politician think the increasingly fractious row in No 10 was really about, I asked. Was it personalities? Policies? Power? The instant reply was short and to the point. It consisted of a single word. It said simply: “Boris!” A few minutes later, the ex-minister followed up. The problem, he said, was the ultimately futile attempt of trying to deal with a dysfunctional person by endlessly discussing structural solutions. The same sort of thing had happened to New Labour at times. Now it was happening to the Tories too. A new chief of staff here. A new adviser there. A ministerial reshuffle perhaps. Before long, the ex-minister said dismissively, they will probably move the prime minister into a brand new room in the vain hope that a change of surroundings will solve the problem.

I agree, and that has happened. Scottish people are several times more likely to become leaders of British political parties or British P.M. The Liberals in recent years have usually chosen Scottish leaders: David Steel, Charles Kenedy, Sir Menzies Campbell, Jo Swinson etc. Labour's first P.M. was Scottish as was Gordon Brown. If not Scottish, many are partly Scottish, Blair, Cameron and Theresa May.

WM should let Scotland have their referendum. However I don’t know how would a divided UK look like if Scotland indeed becomes independent. England and Scotland share a long border and since both are not EU members right now it would be a hard border, also many people from Scotland work or live in England and vice versa, it would be strange. And there is the question of Shetland islands, they do not belong to Scotland, they were a gift to the british crown so maybe they should become a crown dependency.
