Hey, doing a clutch swap soon, I thought I consult a bit before doing it, because I've never seen such clutch swapping instructions before. So I bought by the looks of it the same type of clutch you have it's the "sachs xtend type I riveted", however because the clutch is "self adjusting" the instructions call not only for a centering tool, but for a special tensioning/centering tool from sachs 4200080561 to preload and stop it from prematurely failing. So my question would be, is there any downside to not using it, and just centering it with a centering tool? I've seen comments ranging from "it's completely fine to not use it" to others saying "it'll break as soon as you start to drive", so your input/advice would be great help. Thanks in advance!
I've never heard of that tool and I didn't use one when changing my clutch. The clutch has worked and is still working perfectly to this day so in my opinion it's fine to do it without that tool.
@@mike_themechanicSo, situation update in case this helps anyone out in the future. I rented the tool out of my own curiosity 😅, and I do think the clutch tool serves a purpose for an amateur mechanic. It helps you center and tighten the clutch bolts evenly while pushing it onto the flywheel mounting pins for the clutch, basically making any mistakes impossible, especially with setting pins on Sachs clutches. However, it can also be done by just tightening the bolts in order and using a proper centering tool. And @mike_thrmechanic Thanks for responding and keep up the good work!
In the old days I would of only changed the slave cylinder unless the clutch looked to be on its way. Now I'm 64 i just changed the whole clutch assembly swapped dual mass flywheel for solid mass flywheel as its getting harder on the body lol. But just had to drop the box again the new slave cylinder failed a week off 3months, but I'm still glad I replaced the whole clutch assembly.2010 1.6tdci focus. Jepp new bolts fitted. 👍 I really struggled with weather to change everything or not. I'm not tight fisted or anything but it's a lot of money to spend on something I was pretty sure didn't need changing

Mine has done 310 000km original clutch with no problem. Now I have a noise in the gearbox. Ive set it down to eighter A: outgoing bearing on gearbox or B: flywheel. Im taking it out soon. Thx for the video!
Had my clutch and dual mass flywheel replaced 2 years ago by the garage and today the same garage have diagnosed clutch slave cylinder leaking brake fluid but it should of lasted longer than 2 years or am I wrong
I think it will all depend on how much milage you do. If your doing alot of city driving you'll be using the clutch more than if your motorway driving. 2 years dosent sond alot but it will all depend on the type of driving you do.
Since you are a mechanic I think it makes sense for you to change all of it as the impact on the value of the car should be positive. If I as enthusiast were to do it, there would be no real credibility of it being replaced anyway so then it would be a question of how long I am gonna keep the car and how much money I am willing to spend. But my gut tells me that I would do it still.
I agree with you. After looking at the flywheel and clutch it feels a bit wrong to fit new parts knowing the old parts were perfectly fine. If it were for a customer I would have advised them of the situation and let them choose if I fit it or not, but as it's for me I fitted everything and just bit the bullet even though it hurt my wallet 😂
Hi I’ve just started with the same problem on 2017 titanium diesel 16 . Hi, i did my clutch replace just like you for my mazda 3 1.6 hdi 2009, but my clutch pedal got just a tiny litle bit harder to press in, is it a problem or its normal? Will it get better in time? I think at that mileage I would definitely change it if I was intending to keep the car for a few years . I wouldn’t have the ability to do a job like this if I’m honest. I was actually thinking of having a new clutch put in the streetka when I bought it , it’s only done 63k but was gonna have a lot of stick from my learner driver daughter who will use it sometimes but reading the stuff that came with it it had a new one in 2019 at 60k so that was tough 👍
@@memphis_sean8169 it dosent engage the clutch when the car is off. The release bearing engages when you press the clutch and spins due to the engine turning round. So if it whines/growls when you press the clutch pedal and the engine is running then is likely the release bearing

Then support the engine and disconnect everything that is attached to it, gear linkages, earth leads, hydraulic lines and the gearbox mount.
hi, probably a silly question to you as you have the big brain when it comes to cars, my 2010 focus titanium just went off the road as my clutch pedal went slack now now cant get it in gear while the engine is running. recovery mechanic says he'd put money on it being the slave cylinder as its just now started leaking out the clutch fluid. is this likely to be just a slave cylinder replacement or am i looking at a whole clutch/master cylinder/slave cylinder replacement? thanks in advance
If it leaking then you should be able to see where it's leaking. If it went suddenly then i would guess that it's likely the slave cylinder as the master cylinder usually gets gradually worse and then stops working at all. You won't be able to get any gears if the clutch dosent engage.
@DaddyDunva done about the same as mine but slightly older. I'd have the flywheel and clutch ready if needed when you have the gearbox out. If it's not needed then you don't need to change it
Another detail not in the video is the correct amount of new gearbox oil. Its really weird on the manual 6 gear since you have to fill it up until it leaks out and then suck out like 100ml which is effectively wasting good new oil.
