    It was October 2014 I was in Des Moines, Iowa. I’m 33 years old and I can’t sleep and I’m surfing the web on a public computer in a hotel lobby, just killing time so I get some rest before my cousin’s wedding. And for some reason, this song comes over the loudspeaker and it just sticks with me. It’s inescapably infectious. And how a blues tune managed to breakthrough to the top 40 in a year filled with hair metal and new wave and R&B makes this song extra special to me.

    • @waggsish
      @waggsish 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm in Austin and I used to see SRV for a buck at Hut's Hamburgers. He was always talkative between sets, and after the show. Lou Ann Barton would sing with him many times there. I first saw Robert Cray when he was invited to one of the many outdoor concerts we had here with SRV and the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
      I weep at the thought of those days, times, we all took for granted. Never did we think we'd lose Stevie the way we did. When news of Alpine Valley broke, a stunned city populace of fellow musicians, people from all walks of life, met at the place where many T-Bird Riverfests were held. Thousands of us in tears, all of us. A radio station sent a mobile unit out, and SRV was being played non-stop. It was surreal. I had never witnessed mass mourning like that before.
      The man was loved by many worldwide. Our city loved him long before the rest of the world did. It didn't matter wtf style of music you played, everyone knew SRV and dug him. A statue of SRV graces the area near where thousands used to hear Our Hometown Boy play.

    Robert Cray does everything so very well but his lyrics are particularly exceptional. This is just one of many examples of painting such a picture in your mind with a story, and of course a great performance.

    I've seen him live 4 times I almost made him choke on his water when I said, "Loved you in Animal House."He almost spit out his water and look at me smiling and gave me the thumbs up. I wished I had it on video. I was so close that I didn't even have to yell.

      @spibach 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was offered the job of being the guitarists in that band in the Animal House movie. I turned it down because I didn't want to have to get my hair cut short. That turned out to be one of the stupidest decisions I ever made. My friend Tommy Smith got that job instead. I met DeWayne Jessie who played the singer Otis Day about 10 years ago when he came to see me play at a dive bar in Eugene, Oregon. He told me it was probably one of my stupidest decisions too. He's made a pretty lucrative career playing gigs as Otis Day for the last 40 years, even though that wasn't actually him singing in the movie. I got to jam with Robert a few times way back in the late 70's
      before he got famous.

    I first heard about Robert Cray in 1986 at a bar called the Sand Dollar in Folly Beach, SC. A band called Arhooly was playing and the lead singer Sheila Arhooly that had just walked on top of the bar singing Sweet Home Chicago sat down next to me at the bar and actually talked to me. I was 19. She was in her early 30s I think. Sheila and the band ended up coming back to my place and we all partied . My lecherous boyfriend at the time was also in his 30s and knew her from some time ago, he was a guitar player, but anyhooooo.... Sheila Arhooly told me about Robert Cray and how talented he was, and that she had actually gotten to perform live with him at one point in the recent past and Ive been listening to him ever since!
