In western countries, minijobs, part time jobs are so popular but in eastern countries it is not. So instead of hiring 3-4 different shift part time workers, eastern companies try to hire full time just one worker then push extra work hours to him and not try to not pay salary of extra hours... So eastern or all countries should focus the creating part time jobs for decreasing unemployment rate (i think).
Well the thing is due to large population there is more competition driving the salaries low which in turn leads to someone working for a very low wage and full time due to desperation and job scarcity.

The shortfalls in education can be bridged by re-training people with just the essential skills - it's not going to need much training to be an assembler in a Foxconn or a Tesla factory. Problem is, no corporation is willing to invest in doing this, just as no government has invested in cheap housing for the masses of young people near job centers, who will gladly work if given the opportunity. Not to mention, most employees will not be faithful to the company that gave them industry relevant skills because of the desire for upward mobility. But it can be done if they all three parties come together. Also, agriculture should be made a profession that pays enough to sustain families - this is the real challenge.
Education is not just about training essential skills. Education from an early age conditions the child to be diligent at his work, make less mistakes and be punctual. All these boost the general productivity of any worker. Specific knowledge can be put in when necessary.

Education system needs a rework. I am Canadian and have worked with Indian colleagues in Canada, and now Europe. They were all dedicated and very hardworkers. But, If they were educated in India, their skill level was noticeably lower. This was not their fault. The Indians who went through the North American or European education system were far and wide the best workers I have ever worked with.
It’s actually on the cards. The National Education Policy 2020 is finally commencing in the academic year 2024 (New syllabus, New Textbooks, Subjects and Semester system). It gives a lot of freedom to students to choose between subjects they want to study and exams and also has a hands on approach with internships (engineering, healthcare, vocational in MSMEs) in high school. Now how this pans out at the ground level would be a case study either way, but i hope it solves the problem it’s trying to solve.

Some of the smartest people I know are from India, unfortunately some others I've met had fake degrees and were terrible to work with. One guy I knew had a PhD in computer science yet was coding at a grade school level, yet he insisted he was a genius and got mad whenever anyone found bugs in his work (which was almost his entire code). Sad thing was he was being paid over 400K and they wouldnt fire him and get someone qualified.

In australia it's actually very hard to be fired from white collar roles, especially if you have signed a high rate. I seem to recall they hired two grads to pick up the slack from his bad programming, and he was brought in as an architect but we quickly found out he didn't know how so our dev lead took over that, even though it wasn't his wheelhouse.

@user-pakshibhithi10 I don't know why he was hired. On paper he definitely had a PhD, and probably a lot of other qualifications and was probably very impressive in the interviews. The agent is a recruiter. They would put contractors forward to companies. There's nothing shady about it or bribery, that's how they work. I'm just telling you how things work, once your hired there are lots of workers protections in Australia, so you can't just fire someone if you have it in your contract that says other avenues must be explored first, usually changing roles or probation. If you do get "fired" then you have to buy out the contract and also probably a hefty severence. The only thing we did was not renew his contract but he's probably somewhere else do the same thing. That's why I am very dubious about Indian qualifications. I now do the hiring for my teams, and I'm also a contractor (so I know how much agencies take). Unfortunately a lot of people lie about their qualifications and aren't found out until it's too late. Say what you will about the saying, it's not what you know but who, but anyone who's been recommended to me by my friends and colleagues have always turned out to be solid.

The worthless education is problem not only in India. In Europe too there are tens of millions highly educated people in fields where no one needs them and that's because countries don't have their rational education policy and fund literally everything which has "education" in its name. We are busting so many people from this region (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh) where their graduation is bought and paid for. You incorrectly, or incompletely defined demographic dividend. It's not about having a young population, it's about the period where your dependency ratio drops, because people have stopped having alot of kids, but the population isn't yet old enough to have alot of retirees.
the education system , vocational trainings, ease of doing business needs to be fundamentally changed. I was born and raised in India but then due to lack of opportunities in 2010s era had to move out to survive , given the skillset I had acquired. Another issue is that the existing labor laws that limits actual "high delivery" employees from delivering at their best ( recognition of merit over slogging, hours served etc.). My view is limited to supply chain ( trucking and shipments), technology development and agro based exports. There needs to an element of regular training and non financial support in place for existing workforce to scale up from time to time. I am to understand the current govt is trying for some of the above , but true change only happens when all parties involved ( private sector, policy makers and undergrads ) see the merit in it. the video does a great job in mentioning the mistakes made by china and Japan and there are some great learning lessons there to be noted. Learning may be the only constant if one wishes to thrive in today's market, irrespective of the field.

Property rates were dirt cheap. Inflation was low. So people between 1990-2005 bred like pigs. Especially poor, lower middle and middle class. Now every day 10,00,000 youths are looking to join the job market. This resulted in, exploitation, low wages, cut-throat competition, and fewer job opportunities. Insane prices of property. The whole issue with demographics is that the effects, good and bad, are based on the current economic models that were created in an environment of rising population. As mentioned, you don't even have to innovate to grow. But this was never going to last. Automation and innovation tend to lower the need for raw human input. Take farming in the US. If India does not solve the poverty problem, all the space missions and nuclear weapons in the world will not matter. The US has been successful in technology, including things like space and military technology because they were already a rich country. A space program, for example, does not make a country rich. For a poor country it is just an expense. The US economy is seven times India's with less than one quarter of the population. India needs to make some serious changes.

There are so many reasons as to why Indians leave india, these are a few: 1) Good quality of life abroad: These include good work life balance, clean spaces, very manageable traffic, etc. 2) Less Corruption: The Indian bureaucracy is highly corrupt at every level and dealing with administrative tasks can be an absolute pain leading to offering bribes everywhere to get things done. 3) A better sense of respect directed towards other people as well as civil rules put in place which ensure the smooth running of society in general. 4) High Trust: People are generally honest and rely on trust to get work done. This is not something that I've seen in India. We can't trust anyone completely and fear that they may stab us in the back when the time comes. This may often lead to micro-management. 5) Equal opportunity: There is no caste/reservation system. Everyone gets equal opportunity to get what they want (no discrimination against your caste/religion/beliefs/etc). 6) Population: Because there is way less population, everything is more manageable (the lesser people you have it becomes easier to manage a nation - lesser infrastructure required, can focus on quality rather than quantity in general in all aspects) 7) Lack of Open & Clean spaces to spend time with friends/family. Being overcrowded means that there are very few green/open spaces. 8) A better focus given towards pursuing your extra curricular activities. (sports/camping/travelling/etc) In India, for most people our only choice is an engineer, doctor Or a Lawyer (I know its a stereotype but it holds true very well from a global, nation-wide perspective. We also work longer hours and can be expected very frequently to work on the weekends depending the type of job you have). This also a good Segway to say that all types of work are respected. People don't look down on you if you don't have a high flying/high paying job. Here, Work is truly Worship.

Foreign investment is a finite quantity. Foreign investors have a range of opportunity to choose from and if India doesn't offer a better investment than the alternative, that investment is going to go somewhere else. Just having a very large potential workforce won't entice foreign investment if the salaries for those workers are higher than salaries in other countries, who also are competing for those investments. Even if India can be cost competitive on salaries, other factors come into play, such as work ethic, worker integrity, and the overall quality of the work done. Not sure India can compete on those factors relative to all the other countries that are also on the market for those jobs.
Indians are overqualified for most jobs in the world , in india you can find someone with a better skill set for lot less. Work ethic is better than all westerners working in MNCs companies as well. The issue is educational system sucks so most of the talent learn on their own using resources available to them. An Indian with 10 years of experience in any field world run circles around anyone else in the same field with comparable experience in the world when it comes to talent , work ethics , integrity.

I have worked with many Indian ex-pat's in the US and they are very smart, ambitious, and trustworthy colleagues. I have also worked with many Indians who are in India and they are mostly just the opposite in all these traits. The Indian people have great potential, but there seems to be something in the local culture that is not going to make their success guaranteed.

Shub, It won’t work because India is a democratic country and it can’t impose such a policy. For so long, the West has been criticizing China 1 child policy as “abusing human rights”…as a democratic country India would not be spared. Secondly, because China is a communist country…whoever does not comply with the a child policy will be in trouble whereas India will not be able to punish whoever does not comply. Regardless…we can see that now China population is aging and that becomes a problem for China. India will not have that problem however because India is still a very poor country, under developed…there is not enough jobs for the people thus the people are poors. What most of the researchers miss in macro data is the concentration and rise in population growth in only a specific part of India. India population growth is mainly driven by two most backward states i.e. UP and Bihar and one particular religious group Muslims. That will create a huge problem for india in time to come as these people will migrate to other parts of the country. Rest of indian states particularly southern and eastern have fertility rate below 2.1 from last 10 years.
Tbh it's not India's fault. The Indian subcontinent has all the ingredients for a population boom. Extremely fertile land fed by rivers originating from the largest mountain range on the planet. The issue is the aging population, they will retire and burden the social care systems, which the young ones will have to pay for. But there aren't enough young people in a country with a declining population, so the burden increases.
Population growth per se does not bring wealth, otherwise most of Africa would be an economic super power by now; the quality of the human capital matters and here I am afraid the Indian education system has become increasingly lacking, going from obsolete programmes to actual diploma mills - all of that not encouraging creative. independent thinking, but mostly just compliance to what is written in the book.

It’s because people are living in cities more, people who live in cities tend to have fewer children when compared to those in the suburbs or the countryside, there’s also religious reasons for it, those who are less religious tend to have fewer children then religious populations.

As well, there are studies suggesting to much phone use close to male genitalia can have adverse affects on sperm counts, thus reducing fertility.

The education system is almost like the USSR. Everything theoretical and rote but almost nothing practical. You can ask a geology student in India all about it and they'd be happy and prompt to teach but soon as you take that to test on the field, all that is nearly lost. It's a problem of effective engineering too. Engineers learn everything theoretical and about different concepts and algorithms but have never worked with implementing in a real world setting and feel lost beyond the confines of academic software programs they are made to write to prove skills as an example.
Worrying about growing population is really useless. We should focus on becoming efficient and being resourceful rather. If we focus on population then we will go under the list of low birth rate.

In western countries, minijobs, part time jobs are so popular but in eastern countries it is not. So instead of hiring 3-4 different shift part time workers, eastern companies try to hire full time just one worker then push extra work hours to him and not try to not pay salary of extra hours... So eastern or all countries should focus the creating part time jobs for decreasing unemployment rate (i think).

The shortfalls in education can be bridged by re-training people with just the essential skills - it's not going to need much training to be an assembler in a Foxconn or a Tesla factory. Problem is, no corporation is willing to invest in doing this, just as no government has invested in cheap housing for the masses of young people near job centers, who will gladly work if given the opportunity. Not to mention, most employees will not be faithful to the company that gave them industry relevant skills because of the desire for upward mobility. But it can be done if they all three parties come together. Also, agriculture should be made a profession that pays enough to sustain families - this is the real challenge.
Education is not just about training essential skills. Education from an early age conditions the child to be diligent at his work, make less mistakes and be punctual. All these boost the general productivity of any worker. Specific knowledge can be put in when necessary.

Education system needs a rework. I am Canadian and have worked with Indian colleagues in Canada, and now Europe. They were all dedicated and very hardworkers. But, If they were educated in India, their skill level was noticeably lower. This was not their fault. The Indians who went through the North American or European education system were far and wide the best workers I have ever worked with.
It’s actually on the cards. The National Education Policy 2020 is finally commencing in the academic year 2024 (New syllabus, New Textbooks, Subjects and Semester system). It gives a lot of freedom to students to choose between subjects they want to study and exams and also has a hands on approach with internships (engineering, healthcare, vocational in MSMEs) in high school.
Now how this pans out at the ground level would be a case study either way, but i hope it solves the problem it’s trying to solve.

Some of the smartest people I know are from India, unfortunately some others I've met had fake degrees and were terrible to work with.
One guy I knew had a PhD in computer science yet was coding at a grade school level, yet he insisted he was a genius and got mad whenever anyone found bugs in his work (which was almost his entire code).
Sad thing was he was being paid over 400K and they wouldnt fire him and get someone qualified.

In australia it's actually very hard to be fired from white collar roles, especially if you have signed a high rate. I seem to recall they hired two grads to pick up the slack from his bad programming, and he was brought in as an architect but we quickly found out he didn't know how so our dev lead took over that, even though it wasn't his wheelhouse.

@user-pakshibhithi10 I don't know why he was hired. On paper he definitely had a PhD, and probably a lot of other qualifications and was probably very impressive in the interviews. The agent is a recruiter. They would put contractors forward to companies. There's nothing shady about it or bribery, that's how they work. I'm just telling you how things work, once your hired there are lots of workers protections in Australia, so you can't just fire someone if you have it in your contract that says other avenues must be explored first, usually changing roles or probation. If you do get "fired" then you have to buy out the contract and also probably a hefty severence. The only thing we did was not renew his contract but he's probably somewhere else do the same thing.
That's why I am very dubious about Indian qualifications. I now do the hiring for my teams, and I'm also a contractor (so I know how much agencies take).
Unfortunately a lot of people lie about their qualifications and aren't found out until it's too late. Say what you will about the saying, it's not what you know but who, but anyone who's been recommended to me by my friends and colleagues have always turned out to be solid.

The worthless education is problem not only in India. In Europe too there are tens of millions highly educated people in fields where no one needs them and that's because countries don't have their rational education policy and fund literally everything which has "education" in its name. It produces unemployment and wastes a lot of money which should be put elsewhere.
Difference is that the "worthless education" in Europe is at the very least real. We are busting so many people from this region (India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh) where their graduation is bought and paid for. They know absolutely nothing about the field the claim to have a masters in and eventually end up sneaking off to do some low paid manual labor job illegally once the employer have had enough. Thankfully the loophole is about to close shortly and will mean that once they get fired they'll have to leave the country willingly or forcefully.

You incorrectly, or incompletely defined demographic dividend. It's not about having a young population, it's about the period where your dependency ratio drops, because people have stopped having alot of kids, but the population isn't yet old enough to have alot of retirees.
the education system , vocational trainings, ease of doing business needs to be fundamentally changed. I was born and raised in India but then due to lack of opportunities in 2010s era had to move out to survive , given the skillset I had acquired.
Another issue is that the existing labor laws that limits actual "high delivery" employees from delivering at their best ( recognition of merit over slogging, hours served etc.). My view is limited to supply chain ( trucking and shipments), technology development and agro based exports. There needs to an element of regular training and non financial support in place for existing workforce to scale up from time to time.
I am to understand the current govt is trying for some of the above , but true change only happens when all parties involved ( private sector, policy makers and undergrads ) see the merit in it.

The whole issue with demographics is that the effects, good and bad, are based on the current economic models that were created in an environment of rising population. As mentioned, you don't even have to innovate to grow. But this was never going to last. Automation and innovation tend to lower the need for raw human input. Take farming in the US. There are so many reasons as to why Indians leave india, these are a few:
1) Good quality of life abroad: These include good work life balance, clean spaces, very manageable traffic, etc.
2) Less Corruption: The Indian bureaucracy is highly corrupt at every level and dealing with administrative tasks can be an absolute pain leading to offering bribes everywhere to get things done.
3) A better sense of respect directed towards other people as well as civil rules put in place which ensure the smooth running of society in general.
4) High Trust: People are generally honest and rely on trust to get work done. This is not something that I've seen in India. We can't trust anyone completely and fear that they may stab us in the back when the time comes. This may often lead to micro-management.
5) Equal opportunity: There is no caste/reservation system. Everyone gets equal opportunity to get what they want (no discrimination against your caste/religion/beliefs/etc).
6) Population: Because there is way less population, everything is more manageable (the lesser people you have it becomes easier to manage a nation - lesser infrastructure required, can focus on quality rather than quantity in general in all aspects)
7) Lack of Open & Clean spaces to spend time with friends/family. Being overcrowded means that there are very few green/open spaces.
8) A better focus given towards pursuing your extra curricular activities. (sports/camping/travelling/etc) In India, for most people our only choice is an engineer, doctor Or a Lawyer (I know its a stereotype but it holds true very well from a global, nation-wide perspective. We also work longer hours and can be expected very frequently to work on the weekends depending the type of job you have). This also a good Segway to say that all types of work are respected. People don't look down on you if you don't have a high flying/high paying job. Here, Work is truly Worship.

Foreign investment is a finite quantity. Foreign investors have a range of opportunity to choose from and if India doesn't offer a better investment than the alternative, that investment is going to go somewhere else. Just having a very large potential workforce won't entice foreign investment if the salaries for those workers are higher than salaries in other countries, who also are competing for those investments. Even if India can be cost competitive on salaries, other factors come into play, such as work ethic, worker integrity, and the overall quality of the work done. Not sure India can compete on those factors relative to all the other countries that are also on the market for those jobs.
Indians are overqualified for most jobs in the world , in india you can find someone with a better skill set for lot less. Work ethic is better than all westerners working in MNCs companies as well. The issue is educational system sucks so most of the talent learn on their own using resources available to them. An Indian with 10 years of experience in any field world run circles around anyone else in the same field with comparable experience in the world when it comes to talent , work ethics , integrity.

To me as an outsider, I see India as the biggest opportunity in the world - they speak English, they have stable democracy, they are friendly, 80% of Indians can afford 50 usd per week for a product. What stops me from setting up, if not 1 but several businesses in India. To enjoy the culture and support their growth....., I'm going to India!
I have worked with many Indian ex-pat's in the US and they are very smart, ambitious, and trustworthy colleagues. I have also worked with many Indians who are in India and they are mostly just the opposite in all these traits. The Indian people have great potential, but there seems to be something in the local culture that is not going to make their success guaranteed.

Unlike USA India does not have the law of eminent domain or crown land if you are in UK. Building these infrastructure would mean tearing down existing private infrastructure. The government cannot legally do that. That being said, lethargic government is definitely another factor.

It’s already applied the child policy but for government sectors only, if you have a government job then you must only have 2 children or one child , else your job at government sector will be revoked and you might be removed from the job.

It won’t work because India is a democratic country and it can’t impose such a policy.
For so long, the West has been criticizing China 1 child policy as “abusing human rights”…as a democratic country India would not be spared.
Secondly, because China is a communist country…whoever does not comply with the a child policy will be in trouble whereas India will not be able to punish whoever does not comply.
Regardless…we can see that now China population is aging and that becomes a problem for China.
India will not have that problem however because India is still a very poor country, under developed…there is not enough jobs for the people thus the people are poors.
I believe Indians with a bachelor degree or master degree still have to fight for a janitor job…this should not have to be like this but reality is harsh.

What most of the researchers miss in macro data is the concentration and rise in population growth in only a specific part of India. India population growth is mainly driven by two most backward states i.e. UP and Bihar and one particular religious group Muslims. That will create a huge problem for india in time to come as these people will migrate to other parts of the country. Rest of indian states particularly southern and eastern have fertility rate below 2.1 from last 10 years.

Tbh it's not India's fault. The Indian subcontinent has all the ingredients for a population boom. Extremely fertile land fed by rivers originating from the largest mountain range on the planet. Tons of flat land and the ability to grow food for the entire year. India has traditionally held a larger population relative to other places.

The world wasnt bad in 1000-1200 AD too, if you leave low mortality rates because of tehcnical knowlegde of medicine, medicine was the only thing we lacked, other then that life was extremely good. There was a study done where they found people in North Korea had good social life and very little sucide rates been in a oppresed society while sucide rates, depression and unemployment in South Korea is alarming.
Imagine a world in 1000 AD with modern medical knowlegde, no TV Radio Smartphone and modern gadgets and no wars. Just farm and sell your food in the market, no tension no depression. Life would be great!

Population growth per se does not bring wealth, otherwise most of Africa would be an economic super power by now; the quality of the human capital matters and here I am afraid the Indian education system has become increasingly lacking, going from obsolete programmes to actual diploma mills - all of that not encouraging creative. independent thinking, but mostly just compliance to what is written in the book.
In short India must address the quality of education in the country aside from population control. Population is advantageous when they are productive that's what India lacks, I guess

It's the demographic transition, which would have happened anyway. The One-Child policy barely accelerated the process by a decade at most. Just look at South Korea.

It’s because people are living in cities more, people who live in cities tend to have fewer children when compared to those in the suburbs or the countryside, there’s also religious reasons for it, those who are less religious tend to have fewer children then religious populations.

As well, there are studies suggesting to much phone use close to male genitalia can have adverse affects on sperm counts, thus reducing fertility.

China's GDP per capita, though 5 times higher than India's, is still not high enough to be considered a wealthy nation. China's economy continues to grow with new innovations, coupled with a declining population will increase the GDP per capita.

The education system is almost like the USSR. Everything theoretical and rote but almost nothing practical. You can ask a geology student in India all about it and they'd be happy and prompt to teach but soon as you take that to test on the field, all that is nearly lost. It's a problem of effective engineering too. Engineers learn everything theoretical and about different concepts and algorithms but have never worked with implementing in a real world setting and feel lost beyond the confines of academic software programs they are made to write to prove skills as an example.
Worrying about growing population is really useless. We should focus on becoming efficient and being resourceful rather. If we focus on population then we will go under the list of low birth rate.
