I am 34, got DD for Christmas when I was like 13. Played it for hours and hours throughout my teenage years and even into my 20s.Played rhe beerio kart version of it with the lads for years too. I thought i basically had the game madtered and was unbeatable at it. I had never even heard kf A-Tech. Going to practice it now and try Speedrunning! Thanks for this video!
I'm happy to hear that! Good luck on your journey, and make sure to check out the main general video of this series if you haven't already :d it's quite old but still accurate
Great stuff! Was just coming to a point where I started asking myself these sorts of questions. Been using your zero to hero videos a lot so hoping to see more in the future :] Also awesome glow up in the video quality
I'm not trying to do high level time trials. I've just been replaying Double Dash this last week, and I've been trying to learn this technique. I'm still not amazing at it, and I look stupid a lot of the time, but full A-tech has given me the most fun I've had in Mario Kart in a long time. I just did 50cc flower cup, and I was faster than I was in the 100cc flower cup last week. 50cc seems like a great place to practice A-tech.
I'm asking for a friend here (I've played this game since Childhood) he has this problem when drifting that his inputs won't register having the yellow sparks not transistion to orange to blue. You can see his kart turning but no MT transitions with the sparks, he thinks its my controller, but all the controllers we have I can drift easily on and have no issues with. Is there a limit to the range of motion when flicking ths sticks?
@@Ikronix007short answer: Yes! Long answer: To charge a drift, you'll need to move the control stick only from outside to neutral (the middle). Many people think it's left-right or vice versa, but it's not. So for example, in Luigi Circuit's big left facing turn, you start a drift holding Left + R (assuming R is your drift button). Then in order to charge it, we'll need to hold outside, so RIGHT in this case, then neutral. This charges to orange. Do these steps again (outside -> neutral), and blue sparks appear. Each of these steps require a certain amount of time to register, so you can't quickly keep flinging the control stick -- theres a tiny pause between each movement. Do it slowly until it's consistent, then speed up as you grow more comfortable with it, but never sacrifice consistency. You can release R at any time once the blue spark has been charged, so no worries about that. Hope that helps!
@@GoombaNL Now that I think about it I consistently do this part. I've done this naturally as a kid so I never really thought of it. "you'll need to move the control stick only from outside to neutral (the middle)." My friend (and my brother) both wiggle the stick left AND right like you would in the more recent versions of Mario Kart such as Deluxe. Thanks for the Tip and Explanation!!
Thanks for making this video! I didn't know there are different types of A-Tech. I heard competitors say that A-Tech can be executed to various levels of success but I didn't know there are different types of A-Tech. I didn't know A-Tech had SO MUCH influence on driving technique. I thought it just allowed, straight stretch Mini Turbos or MTing without wobbling, keeping control of the vehicle but it now seems like it is the basic of 'very high' level driving techniques? At least that's how I have interpreted this video after my first viewing of it. I sometimes wondered, "How do competitors at God/Goddess level race around Baby Park with such sideways momentum technique?" If I compete again, I'll be rewatching this video multiple times. It's so awesome! As I say, too many great videogames but if I focus on MKDD!! again, properly focus, I think this video could be great for improving my PRs. In honesty, I don't focus properly and it seems a bit complex so I don't know how I'll go in the future but thanks for making this great video:) Thank you!
Hey Stephen, thanks for the kind words! Yep there's a lot that goes into a-tech at the highest level. If you do return to mkdd I hope you have fun trying them out!
Awesome video. I remember when the first a-tech revolutionised the game, now look at the evolution! I am curious with MT do you just use the right shoulder for everything (or was that for simplicity in the video). Cheers
Maybe I'll actually understand sideways strat for BP now. The MT after you clear the corner trips me up every time. That timing is very weird and unintuitive. I also notice I have this tendency to obtain blue sparks before screwing with A releases, which is the exact opposite of what you need. On many of your fancy A-tech examples, you're releasing A when you're still charging the turbo. I'm not doing that, so I always feel like I "run out of room", or I'm "not quick enough". This is a major adjustment I need to make for fancy a-tech to work for me.
As a noob, I find that releasing A makes the cart lose almost all traction, and I fall off EVERYWHERE on Wario Colosseum. I think A-tech might be abusing that “feature” to remove the forwards traction of the MT boost
Too bad that I don’t have a friend who I can show him my professional techniques in this game. 😞 + Very clear and nice video. Thx for ur beautiful edit too. 😉
Pretty sure it's this! www.ffonts.net/Koopa-Kart-Double-Dash-Regular.font There's also a similar font called Koopa Party 9, which I also use throughout this video
This video is great and has really got me interested in the advanced techniques of this game. However my basic drifting is so inconsistent!!! I’m trying to practice preparing my MT’s faster but it seems like sometimes my inputs don’t even register while other times im good. Any tips? Thanks in advance!
Sorry, only just saw your comment! I recommend making sure your controller functions properly (for example by holding a drift for a while and seeing if it randomly releases it), otherwise, comments like this are fairly common when trying to improve. It's all about timing in the end. Practice really does make perfect :)
Mkdd, mkds and mkwii are perfection in terms of skill expression. Almost always the best player should win no matter what in these games and it should be that way, imo. I also enjoyed mk7. Mk8 has too much bs for me its just not the same.
Damn I wondered why I was so bad at this. I was under the impression you have to sync when to let go of a to the drift (for all case uses) Anything asynchronous I blow at lmao
Bro I don’t even know how to get a tech to work in general I guess because I can’t grasp chapter one lmao. I don’t get how to fix spacing issues. I’m constantly swinging my ass end out, and even after listening to how you said causes it I can’t get it to not I know you said that it’s due to chaining them too slow, yet any faster and I get launched in every direction except straight. I don’t grasp how to control it. Not even happening on turns. I’m trying to go straight :(
Thanks much. Gonna take time but should be useful. Question tho, what is the method called where you hold R and spam A for sharp turns? And is that better or worse than L tech?
L-tech is where you hold R and spam L, which is very easy but way worse than R-tech R-tech is where you have to repress R in a certain rhythm, optimally around 3 frames of release before repressing R again, and holding it for at least 8 frames. You don't release A during these techs Good luck! (also, if you're just starting out learning a-tech, don't bother with r-tech quite yet)
One of the hardest Mario Kart's to master at a top level without a shadow of the doubt. I loved the editing also!

We’ve come a long way from TJazZ’s A tech tutorial. That was all I had for a long long time lol. Awesome work man
Same same, that's part of the reason why I wanted to make this as there just wasn't a "proper" resource

Happy to help! And welcome back to double dash :)
What a video! So well put together dude. Really impressive.
Thanks so much man, I appreciate it! :D
Just realized I've been doing fancy a-tech for every mt this whole time by accident

so do you not hold A throughout the race then? just press A when needed its kind of confusing
I mainly hold A, in my mind it's more about releasing A to "lose grip", rather than the other way around
