  • Hello guys, today i will be showing you how to diagnose a bad cooling fan on a 2010 335d
there are a few things you want to check
    - check all fuses related to fan
    - check for any shorts or ripped wires that go to the cooling fan socket as those can cause the fan to turn on
    - check voltage at the socket (what you get for the signal wire it doesnt matter, as voltage changes on the wire depending at what speed the fan needs to be so dont worry if you low voltage)
    - check the continuity of the cables (this is a better way to check for rips or shorts than simply unwrapping the cables and physically looking for shorts)
    things to consider:
    - you may think you have a bad coolant temperature sensor. if the fan doesnt come on when you turn the A/C on then forget about the coolant temp sensor
    - you cant hot wire the fan to check if its good as the module on the fan has power all the time and providing outside power ( hot wiring it) wont do anything.
    - the last two things to check is the relay and fan, and the relay like i said in the video is $21 from FCP Euro and the fan is around $350 on ebay, so your best bet is to try to replace the relay first and if that doesnt do it then go ahead and replace the fan.

I have a different model, but this video could have saved me $1,500. I replaced every component of my cooling system, but it was an electrical problem. Good news is my car now basically has a new cooling system!

I've just completed this fix on an E61 550i LCI. For anyone looking desperately for a relay - my car didn't have one. All fuses were good and there was voltage and signal at the big connector. In the end I had to replace the fan itself. I decided to break open the defective unit - inside there's a small ECU which isn't repairable. I'm assuming something inside that ECU died. The 550i also has an oil cooler which needs to be disconnected - so have some cardboard and a pan ready under the car to catch the spilled oil.

Hi. My fuses are good too. The fan is not working. There is no voltage in the power supply cube. How did you turn on the voltage to power the fan? Need to turn on the ignition and start the engine?

Any idea why does my transmission doesnt want to shift from 1st gear when my radiator fan doesnt work. 1st i had a hunch but then when i un plug the rad fan the gear wont shift and stuck to 1st, but when i put it all back together every thing goes smooth. Plus, i got intermittently issue with the rad fan not working, i got new coolant temp sensor.

Nice job showing your troubleshooting method, but when you tested for voltage at the connector you got good voltage, which indicates the relay (that you said was bad) is working. I guess maybe you had already replaced the relay when you did that test? It would be nice if you would show what the readings are at the fan socket with a good relay and a bad relay. Assuming it would simply show -0- volts if the relay is bad- right?

So i got the a radiator fan and relay the same day, i was this close 🤏🏽 to replacing the fan first as i did not believe that the relay would fix it. the reason why i thought the relay wouldnt fix it was because even BEFORE replacing the relay i was getting voltage at the fan socket. So to answer your question: with a BAD relay you will still get voltage at the socket. It doesnt makes sense right? Bad relay means current doesn’t go from one end of the red wire to the other, but for some reason you will still get voltage on the positive wire at the socket. I actually tried looking up how this relay works to give you a decent explanation of why this happens but i cant find anything that makes sense. All i can tell you like i said in the video if everything seems to work properly (even good voltage at the socket) you might want to give this relay a try before going for the fan. I know i sound like “trust me bro, its this part” but if you use the precess of elimination to find the problem, it makes a lot some sense (price and time wise) to go for this relay than the fan. Sorry for the late response and hope this helps

Have you tried testing the signal wire with the car on and A/C on? If you still get no signal then you can do a continuity test on on the signal wire. The signal wire goes from the socket fan all the way to the DDE/DME on the passenger side of the engine compartment. You can disconnect the socket from the DME/DDE (small socket, shouldn’t have more than 13 wires) and test it from there. If i can, ill try to upload a diagram in the description to make it visually easier.

@@salgadationjr1677 its a 06 335d. I gave up today because i ran out of time and reinsulated the cables, reassembled everything and the fan came on for the first 5 minutes and then it died, throwing the 0041f2 code again for the fan control. At least i know the fan itself is all good. The problem is now narrowed to the relay which has unknown location or the positive cable which goes underneath the break fuid reservoir

So i looked up the relay you saw in my video (61367661503) and it seems the fitment is only for 335d’s from 2009-2011. So your car doesn’t have it. Idk if you already did this, but check in the glove box for fuse F69 should be a 50 amp. Also check the fuse box under the hood on the passenger side and check the fuses as well as the K9137 relay.

Hi. Does anyone know or have faced such an error? ISTA wrote: DDE: Electric fan, starting. CODE: 0041F2. I did a test, but it doesn't turn. Maybe there's something wrong with the program. I installed the second one, nothing. Does anyone know what the diagram looks like and what elements work with the fan? Does the fan work with a relay? Or just a fuse? Will you help? I will add that the connection at the fan on the pins is clean and functional. The harness looks fine. No. What needs to be done to ensure there is current in the cable that goes to the fan. Maybe then the fan will work.
